We also know that we encounter people every day who are isolated, alone or have no direction. We are called to reach out to them and tell our story. This four-week series considers the following: How do we tell our story? How do we identify those who need to hear it and invite them into the fellowship? And how do we create a relational community? What would one look like? The Prodigal God: Finding Your Place at the Table We’ll look at a great DVD and book study as pastor and bestselling author Timothy Keller uses one of Jesus’ best-loved parables – the Prodigal Son – to illustrate the depth of God’s love and how his grace extends into some very unexpected places. Taking you beyond the traditional focus on the wayward younger son, Keller helps you glean insights from each of the characters in Jesus’ parable: the irreligious younger son, the moralistic elder son and the Father who lavishes his love on both. Aug 25: The Parable Sept. 1: The People Around Jesus Sept. 8: The Two Lost Sons Sept. 15: The Elder Brother Sept. 22: The True Elder Brother Sept. 29: The Feast of the Father First: Putting God First in Living and Giving We’ll ask the question: What happens when we truly put God first in all aspects of our lives? In First: Putting God First in Living and Giving, pastor and author Mike Slaughter helps participants reassess priorities and create a culture and lifestyle of faithful living and giving – and make a meaningful contribution to the world. Oct. 20: First: Be Faithful, Save and Give Oct. 27: First: Heart Giving The Circle Maker: Praying Circles Around Your Biggest Dreams and Greatest Fears We’ll look at the ancient story of Honi the Circle Maker, who prayerwalked until the rains came during a devastating first-century drought, to help you begin to identify dreams and future miracles you can draw prayer circles around. Throughout the DVD series, Mark Batterson not only teaches about big dreams and bold prayers, he lives them. With stories of Honi, as well as reflections on modern-day miracles as a result of prayer, you will learn to identify, discuss and put into practice the dreams and future miracles you need to draw circles around. The Metropolitan Organization works with other churches and schools in Harris and Fort Bend counties to develop a relational community while addressing community issues. MDUMC is primarily addressing needs in the Alief community, with an emphasis on Alief ISD. Our main goal is to engage parents in their children’s education and the governance of their local school. Spanish speakers are always in demand. We have needs in the following projects, all of which have flexible time commitments: Engineering program at Alief Middle School Alief MS program introduces sixth- through eighth-graders to the world of engineering. With the help of volunteers, we will work with staff to further this experience in the fall through assisting students with simple projects for science and engineering contests. Another possibility would be field trips. Being an engineer a plus.

Visit area pastors One of the keys to our work in Alief is to develop relationships with area churches, linking them with each other and the schools. Accompany an organizer or seasoned TMO/MDUMC member to visit pastors. Train as a relational leader TMO uses a relational organization model. It involves learning how to have one-on-one meetings and small group meetings that help identify possible community leaders and issues. Training geared for beginners and can be used in other venues. Neighborhood walks One method of engaging parents is to have neighborhood walks and talk to them about their hopes and dreams for their children. This requires a minimum of training and supervision is provided. Time commitments would be flexible. Attend Alief ISD/TMO events Begin learning about the work of TMO. Attend events including school open houses, community town-hall meetings and others. FranklinOlson@sbcglobal.net
