Communication Briefs Exciting things happen all the time at MDUMC, but this month a few of those items actually relate to how we communicate with one another. We are delighted to announce:

Communication

• Full color Messenger: the in-house printing machines now include one that will bring the Messenger in living color. (You might have noticed this issue is, in fact, in color. ) This capability extends to the Sunday Bulletin, Highlights, and many other applications. • Connection Center electronic sign: the Connection Center will now welcome our friends and neighbors with electronic messages from MDUMC. The new sign will allow us to share a little of who we are with those driving down Memorial Dr., announce events and greeting, and provide important information during times of emergency and need. • The Journey Worship Community: Go to http://get.thechurchapp.org/share/the-journey-worship-community and download The Journey’s new app. It is available for Apple or Droid driven devices.

October Fun The month of October is full of great events. Visit our pumpkin patch in support of our youth workcamps, and of course don’t forget Trunk Treats, our annual Halloween celebration on October 28 from 5:30 -7 PM. See inside for more details.

WELCOME RANDY LEE Most of you know me as a preacher and worship leader. In the chancel on Sunday mornings is where and when you see me at work. That’s okay, since delivering sermons, performing baptisms, celebrating Holy Communion, and helping you praise God and develop as disciples are my passions. However, my professional calling also requires other roles. Along with all clergy, I make hospital visits and counsel persons in need. Plus, as Senior Minister, much of my time is spent directing the overall mission of our church. I cast the vision, enlist teams to fulfill it, raise money, solve problems, coach leaders, and represent MDUMC in the community. And, this column stems from another responsibility. In our large church, staff administration and recruitment are constant duties. We enjoy tremendous tenure with our employees, but there is always someone in transition or the need to add a new position to strengthen an area. Regularly I meet with the Staff Parish Relations Committee on personnel matters and, by God’s grace, often I am confident that my proposal for a specific hire is heaven-sent. One example is when God raised up Stephen Distad to be the new organist. And, I am thrilled to announce God is blessing us again! Mr. Randy Lee is MDUMC’s New Director of Outreach and Technology. Our ever-expanding effort to extend God’s love to others in Houston and across the globe now demands a leader with proven management and people skills to move us toward still greater involvement and effectiveness. For years we have also been searching for a qualified person to maintain our campus technology (computers/electronics) and develop a forward-looking program to equip us with new tools for today’s ministry. Of course, we assumed it would take two people to fulfill these distinct roles. But, in Randy, we found a man with the professional skills and personal passion to combine them into one portfolio. Randy has spent forty years managing technology departments in the banking industry. He comes to us from Encore Bank where he was the Vice President in charge of their entire IT program. In addition, Randy is a respected lay leader in our congregation, having chaired our Board of Stewards and Church Council. Still, he’s best known for helping us “love our neighbors.” He led our Mission Council, participated in many hands-on service projects and was the force behind “1000 Boots.” Thus, one day it struck me that God may have fashioned Mr. Lee to be the one person on earth who could fill very well both the jobs we had open at MDUMC. I shared the idea with Randy, and he prayerfully agreed! So, please gladly welcome Randy Lee to lead our Outreach and Technology ministries. Pray for him as he creates this new dual-role staff position for our church and transitions to become a colleague with his wife, Ellen, our Director of Program. Be quick to assist him when he calls for partners and new ideas to strengthen these areas. And, above all, Worship at join your pastor in joyful praise for heaven’s blessings. God’s done Memorial it again!

Outreach MAM Back to School Thanks to your generosity, MDUMC raised over $5000 to help neighborhood school-aged kids with the supplies and uniforms needed to go back to school this year! MAM has seen an increased need for basics for “back to school” over the years, and this year, they helped over 5,000 students. We celebrate the work that MAM does to transform the lives of Spring Branch families, and we are so grateful for your support!

Grant Council 2012-2013

Hollibrook Mentoring

Please keep our MDUMC Grant Council members in your prayers this Fall! Grant members are busy visiting our non-profit, community partners and they have some hard decisions to make in the months ahead. This year’s council members include Preston Meeks, Chair; Elaine Brill, Vice Chair; Darrell Westcott, Mark Westcott, Frank Moler, Bill Hopkins, Ann Kirby, Viva Pennington, Pam Ramsey, David MacLean, Pat McCutcheon and Marc Shellum. We are so thankful for their leadership and their passion to love God and love our neighbors.

It’s not too late to join the fun and be a meaningful part of a child’s “story” through mentoring! Mentors from MDUMC work with elementary aged children who attend Hollibrook Elementary School in Spring Branch. Just one hour per week makes a life-long impression on a child’s future! No teaching experience is needed – just a heart to love a child! For more information, please contact Julie Eisenhauer at jeisen777@aol.com or Randy Lee at randylee@mdumc.org or 713-468-8356.

MDUMC will hold its next blood drive on November 10 and 11. Please look for the blood drive sign-up table in Friendship Court on Sundays later this month. Just step right up and make that appointment, or call Catherine Brookhart at 713-465-0329 or George and Peggy Pendleton at 713-465-9257. We are looking forward to our usual loyal and cheerful group of donors coming in once again to do their bit to fight the ever present shortage of blood. But, we would be thrilled to see more first-time donors, or those who have not given the gift of life in a long time. Young people can donate blood at the age of 17 as long as they weigh at least 110 lbs. Donating bloood regularly is a great hero-forming habit to start early in life. A few families in our church attend blood drives as a regular family event, with everyone who is able and of age, donating! Please, prayerfully consider donating this one-of-akind life sustaining gift. Your gift may actually save up to 3 lives!

Mark Your Calendars November Blood Drive

Dated Material

As we head into the last few months of the year, please keep your financial covenant current. This month, your giving has furthered Christ’s reign in the world through the sending of a mission team to Guatemala, a retreat for our fourth, fifth and sixth graders, Bible studies, the giving of Bibles to our Third Graders, and flood buckets for those affected by storms. These are only a few of the many ways we love God and love neighbor at MDUMC. Your giving makes a difference in the world. Thank you!
