We are inundated with information from push notifications, headline news, newspapers, magazines, social media platforms, the news, work, school, friends, church and family that we forget to take the time to really sit and talk about what we’ve read and seen and find solutions in protecting our families.

Just think about this for a moment, when was the last time your family sat at the dinner table and had a nice meal with a good conversation?

For some it may have been months, days and years, but when family does get together, it makes things brand new. The art of family is important because it’s what glues everything from within family and externally to other communities. We have to make sure that family is together and everything else will follow.

Here are some great things on how we can keep family conversations going around the dinner table: Talk about your day: some people say that we, as a people, should not have to discuss what happened at work to our families at home; instead it’s best to leave it at work.

If you’re reading this magazine you’re obviously a mom and perhaps a business owner, or maybe you’re trying to figure out how to become one. Well, you’re in the right place! As moms, ultimately we want to be able to spend more time with our family, and build a long lasting business that allows us to contribute financially and leave a legacy behind.

Fast forward to 2021, and wedding planning is no longer my focus (and yes Covid amongst other things solidified that decision for me). Currently, I am focused on HBCU Legacy Fashion, a kids clothing boutique that increases the awareness of HBCUs while giving back through scholarships.

Before becoming a mom, I was an entrepreneur. My first official business endeavor happened in 2012 when I became a Certified Wedding Planner. Not long after, I was coordinating my first wedding. By 2014, I grew my team to include an Associate Planner and a Marketing & Event Coordinator. By 2015, I expanded my team once again to two associates planners and to another state. That same year, I started planning my first destination wedding and eventually, I began specializing in destination weddings only. I had the opportunity to plan weddings in Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico.

My mission is to challenge women to punch imposter syndrome in the face and confidently walk into their purpose. But punching imposter syndrome in the face hasn’t always been the easiest fight for me. Nonetheless, here are 5 tips that will ensure your business is set up for success:

1)Business Plan Busines

Do you have one? If not, how can you be clear on your mission and goals? You must take your business seriously FIRST, if you want others to take your business seriously. You can google free business plan templates to get you started. And trust me, once you become clear on what you’re doing, the right doors will begin to open for you.

2) Who are you serving Are you able to clearly communicate to your ideal customer what type of service (s) you offer and EXACTLY what those services DO and DON'T include? Do you even know who your ideal customer is?

Having an ideal customer will allow you to create boundaries for yourself and your business. It will also help you to stay focused on your mission rather than on money. All money ain’t good money. But when you’re working with the right client, the money will be worth it.

3) Be Original No copy catting. That goes for websites, branding, social media. Do the work to figure out your style and what you can offer. Do not fill your social media with other people’s work. And if you do decide to ever repost a lovely picture of someone else’s work, please make sure you give credit where credit is due.

4) Network Business

Networking is key to building a successful business. And yes, we are in a digital age, especially during this pandemic, but that’s no excuse for you to give up on networking. Apps such as clubhouse allows you to leverage your business and network. Facebook groups are another great way to connect with people. Cultivate those relationships by inviting them on a virtual coffee date via Zoom.

5) Social Media are you collecting emails or are you more concerned about becoming Instagram famous? Let me say it again for those of you who are half asleep. EMAILS CONVERT INTO MONEY...COINS...GREEN...CHACHIIIING. You should definitely have a social media presence. However, the purpose of your social media should be to drive traffic to your website in order to collect emails i.e. “coins.”

O-H-I-O, the heart of the State where Crockett was born and raised, is the same heart of her family where she is the daughter of 7 children and the daughter of a pastor and her mother.

Her family’s foundation is God, family, love, and food. Of course, she was labeled, by others, as the “preacher’s or pastor’s kid” but Crockett was grateful that she and her family were grounded in the word of God and didn’t allow anyone to steal her joy. Some of the main dishes were Shrimp fried rice, chicken fried rice, and pepper steaks; however, chicken was always on the menu and her family couldn’t get enough. She learned how to cook in her early years with her grandparents (maternal grandfather and grandmother and paternal grandmother) and that same love in the kitchen of learning how to cook became her centerpiece of her heart. As she sits in her chair looking on our Skype call, hair brushed back in a bun, a yellow sunshine V-neck shirt, and her bright smile she shares how her grandfather was originally from Hong Kong, China and how he acquired cooking skills from his native land bringing it home to his family in Ohio. She enjoyed watching him cook, sharing his knowledge and expertise around his cooking style and she states, “He was a one pot cook,” as she raised her pointed finger and chuckled about this memory. He enjoyed showcasing his passion to her on how food is made with love and with compassion.

When Crockett was younger, she learned that her grandfather was a chef at a restaurant called the Macon, in Mount Vernon, and he had raving fans talking about his favorite cuisine. Those same customers returned and became loyal due to their experience received from that restaurant.

They never forgotten the taste of his meals, and until this day, they can still smell and taste the experience as if it’s lingering in the air. She didn’t realize the impact he made and added that to her inventory. On the other hand, her grandmother planted a garden in their backyard picking dandelions and green vegetables so they could have fresh food to add to their meals. This was her masterclass, and it was grooming her for a time that would soon unveil itself for the right time. She not only had her grandparents and mother instructing and teaching her how to cook, but she had her high school home economics class that taught her how to cook too. She took mental notes of when to drain noodles, when to add spices, how high and low to cook the meals, how to cut vegetables, and the art of presenting food to her tasters. What is amazing about Crockett, is that she was able to write a mini cookbook, for her church’s ministry, to bring families closer together at the dinner table with new recipes. Her steps have been ordered by God, and each step was bringing her closer toward her blessing.

After graduating and assessing the field, she decided nursing wasn’t her passion. She decided to redirect her major, and graduated from the Ohio State University with a full scholarship, and graduated with 2 Bachelor’s degrees: one in English Education and the other in African African American Studies.

This position gave her fuel and with every preparation, she left a mark similar to how her grandfather did when working at the restaurant. Working at Aramark opened new doors and Crockett enrolled into free courses Since college was over and a new chapter was provided by The Columbus Urban League. There beginning, she had an opportunity to work with were a vast of information on how to run and opvarious for-profit and non-for-profit organizations erate a business, and she wanted to learn as as a director. She raised money, helped families, much as possible so she can do her business and cared for children. When she had worked as right. a Director at a day care center facility, she handled many responsibilities from administrative work, to caring for children, and finding her way back to the kitchen: cooking. Eventually the day care center was under new management as well as preparing to be sold.

Sometimes when new management is new, management will bring in former employees they worked with to their new company to work with them or they may hire new people to start fresh.

In this case, management decided to bring his colleagues, from his former employer, to the daycare center where Crockett was working. Crockett resigned she had taken a break from day care facilities and reflected on creating new paths for her life. Her meditation with God continued, and He started guiding and preparing her on His new story for her. During this time, she re-evaluated her life, continued to take good care of her son, and temporarily worked as a bar tender. It was a lucrative position, and it helped her with other opportunities in the catering business. She received orders on the weekends from customers, so she started preparing meals for special occasions. More catering requests came and Crockett was ready. Although she was perfecting her business, she knew that she needed more training and development in her craft. What she also discovered is all of the knowledge she acquired from her former employees regarding administrative work, was usable as transferable skills for her business. She invoices her customers, contact them for consultation, and follow-up to see if they have any feedback about their catering experience.

On the weekends when she is preparing orders, she finds quality time with her son by having him cook with her; however, if time is pressing and there is an important order she would either have her mother come to assist with her or assist with her son, and some times she may have her son do activities to keep him productive until she has completed her work. Her son is very important to her; however, she had taken her hand and placed it on her face and says, “I haven’t figured everything out yet.” In life, she understands that we as women try to find work and life balance, but it becomes challenging some times, and she admitted how sometimes she may not have all the answers or the know-hows, but what she One day she received an email regarding an open does know for sure, she has support and love position where a catering company was looking from her family that can help. Her words of advice is “What ever energy you put in to something, you’ll get it back and you have to grind.” She also shared that if there are moments where you feel as though it’s too much and have to stop, don’t give up; instead, take a break. You answered the phone with a slow but nervous hello, and the recruiter asks for you and you acknowledge that you’re that person, your palms are sweating and your heart is beating fast, and the recruiter asks, “We received your application and would like to set up an interview with you.” You wanted to scream but kept your professional composure, even though you wanted to do the hallelujah dance around your house while holding the phone, in your hand, and replied, “Thank you so much for the opportunity and look forward to my interview.” After hanging up the phone, you had taken a deep breath and then said to yourself, “what do I need to do next?” Here are some great ways to make sure you are fully prepared for on your next interview so you can ace the opportunity to receive your position you want.

Take this time to read about the company’s history, mission statement, purpose, and goal. When you’re knowledgeable about the company and its history, you receive a deeper understanding of the reason you want to work there and a better since of being a strong attribute to the company to help fulfill its purpose.

Research about the position you want: Although you’ve applied for the position, you may want to revisit the roles and responsibilities of what you will be fulfilling each day. When you’re in your interview, your interview may ask what you know about the position, and what you may be able to add to the team or position. Also you’ll know what systems, applications, and process that you may be using daily. It’s important to know what company’s value and culture is within the organization and outside the organization because that is how you learn about its mission.

Those questions could be about the job, the department, what are some of the challenges and concerns that the position holds, how did the position become available, and what are some of the company’s resources to help perform the job effectively. When asking questions, it shows that you are more interested of learning more about the organization and the specific line-ofbusiness.

Also if you have not heard from them within two weeks, feel free to contact the recruiter to check the status to know if the position is still available and to know if a candidate has been selected for the position.

It’s encouraged to be optimistic throughout the process, be confident, and know if the job is for you, you will receive it. If you don’t get the position, keep moving forward. You are not alone. There are many stories on the social media platform, LinkedIn, about how candidates have applied for more than 100 jobs, and may be on their 110th job, they received it and celebrated. Always remember that when every door closes, one will eventually open, and that’ll be yours to walk through it.

Soraya Nadia McDonald , a former employee of the Washington’s Post, wrote a profound article about a woman by the name of Shanesha Taylor, who left her children in the car because she did not have anyone to care for her children while she was interviewing for a new job. What’s disappointing is that Taylor had a babysitter who was going to care for her two small children and when she went to drop-off her children, nobody answered the door. She was devastated having to choose either between going to an interview or leaving her children in a car.

She chose the latter, and went to her interview. After her interview, she felt successful that it went well; however, when she walked out of the door of the building she interviewed from, police officers were waiting and arrested her.

These are not the only stories that we hear and read, there are stories about children being left alone at home while their parents work; leaving children at home because parents are stressed and need an outlet to relax and don’t have anyone to call; women cannot afford childcare or after school care; and women don’t receive child support or enough income so sometimes they have to bring their children to work. Some of us may have seen the movie, Set It Off, when Kimberly Elise, played the role as a single-mother, Tisean “T.T” Williams (1996), with a son, and had to bring him to work because she did not have anyone to watch him. During this time, he was injured and she loss her rights to having her son due to negligence.

Sadly to say, many women are facing hard times because they are stuck in a position of choosing either to work, leave their children with unpleasant people or in a vehicle while they have to work or do other errands. On the other hand, outsiders who are looking in, may pre-judge the situation because they don’t understand the reason they would make such a negligent decision. Only if they had conversation with those women and understood their stories, could eliminate cameras, the news articles, and the negative remarks and see that women need support.
