ABOUT COVER MODEL: ELYSE KNOWLES Our gorgeous cover model is Australian media personality, model and lifestyle guru, Elyse Knowles.

A household name in both fashion and home living, Elyse juggles a career in modelling, with commitments as ambassador to Myer, Aveda, Land Rover, Two Good and TAG Heuer.

Elyse in conjunction with builder husband Josh Barker, appeared on reality TV show, The Block back in 2017, and today they manage J&E projects, a home renovation business.

What’s most exciting, however, is that this inspiring couple are pregnant with their first child, who will be welcomed into the world in 2021.

Elyse met with our Editor-in-chief Cathy Baker for a photoshoot that sees her appear throughout this edition of Central Coast Life & Style, as well as in advertising features for Belle Escapes, the Central Coasts’ best destination for holiday homes.

Welcome to the summer edition of Central Coast Life & Style.

In this edition, we’re showcasing our beautiful region in all its summer splendour and suggesting ways you can re-energise and refocus yourself for the year ahead.

I’m particularly fond of the summer months, and after a challenging 2020 I feel it’s time for all of us to put our feet up and take a respite, don’t you?

For this edition, I was honoured to have model and TV personality Elyse Knowles, and her partner Josh Barker, stay at our newly appointed Belle Escapes holiday home, Waters Edge in Forresters Beach.

It was a blessing for Elyse to take a break and be pampered, especially as she embarks on her first pregnancy. Having had four boys myself, I shared a few of my own secrets to maintaining time for yourself throughout motherhood. It’s a challenge, right!

Whether you live on the Central Coast or are just visiting, we’ve included things to see, places to eat and shop, as well as insights into what inspires us about living or visiting the many beautiful pockets along our coastline.

We’ve filled our pages with heaps of summertime inspiration for you, from health and wellbeing, to summer fashion, as well as food to envy and places to frolic.

We’ve also included a few properties and holiday escapes to inspire visitors to invest more time on the NSW Central Coast.

Cathy Baker from Belle Property sheds light on the performance of holiday homes as an investment. Plus Cathy shares why she believes the NSW Central Coast is a better buy for property investors than places like Byron, Berry or the Blue Mountains.

We’ve seen a significant upswing in buyer interest across all classes of property on the Central Coast in recent months – in particular with rentals, first homebuyers and prestige property.

Our region’s rental vacancy rate is at an extraordinarily low 0.5 per cent and according to Domain data, median house prices rose 3.8 per cent in the past quarter.

Sydneysiders are leaving the city in droves, relocating to regional areas such as the Central Coast in search of a better lifestyle, exercising their freedom provided with flexible work from home arrangements.

The new normal sees people choosing to live and work somewhere scenic and peaceful, for almost half the price than the cost of living in Sydney – and, why wouldn’t they?

But what’s been most interesting is that there’s been a knock on effect to holiday homes, with people now purchasing a second home on the Central Coast which they rent out in between using it themselves.

Of my last 90 property sales, 75 buyers were holiday house investors.

These buyers share a similar tale; having found it difficult to book accommodation in Byron Bay they reconsidered places, such as the NSW Central Coast as excellent alternatives and better still only a stone’s throw from Sydney city enabling them to vacation more frequently.

Plus with overseas travel off the table, government lending criteria lifted and interest rates at an all time low, buyers are finding they can save deposits and secure home loans more easily.

CENTRAL COAST

As an example, an acreage we advertised at 38 Mittara Road, Terrigal received 220 inquiries in the first 24 hours, 40 inspections on the opening

weekend and we issued a couple of contracts almost immediately.

Most interested parties were looking for a weekender investment.

People are starting to recognise that the Central Coast is extremely well located. Gosford is just 1 hour and seven minutes from the Sydney CBD without traffic – that is closer than Leura in the Blue Mountains or Wollongong. The new Northconnex motorway is saving motorists about 15 minutes overall, alleviating pressure on Pennant Hills Road, one of the state’s most congested highways.

Because people can’t travel internationally, they are looking closer to home for their holidays. Most of the holiday homes rented through my business Belle Escapes are booked several months ahead of time. Investors are therefore more comfortable investing in holiday houses whilst there’s this guaranteed return. Top end holiday homes can earn up to $250,000 per year, with entry-level cottages bringing in around $40,000 per annum.

Home buyers also like having a dual living option to consider for the future.

COVID has made people more conscious of their lifestyle needs, and they now see home life closer to the coast as an inspiring alternative to Sydney suburbia or Sydney city.

As a long time resident of the Central Coast myself, I can tell you that you will not regret investing in a house here, or moving to the region permanently.

Every day, I am inspired by the beauty of our surrounding landscape, our easy going community and ever evolving entertainment culture.

With the affordability factor (in comparison to Sydney) it is a joy to sell and rent property on the NSW Central Coast. As we witness the start of a property boom across our region it’s great to see that people now recognise that it is truly a great place to invest.

Taking a 7.5 hour road trip from Byron Bay, the couple arrived to be greeted by a striking sunset. A palette of pink, purple and blue framed a remarkable sky above the beach house, which is located adjacent to sand dunes along ruggedly beautiful Forresters Beach.

Elyse Knowles Model Elyse Knowles and her partner Josh Barker spent a weekend relaxing on the Central Coast where they got to experience one of the region’s most phenomenal beach side holiday homes at Forresters beach.

Elyse spoke exclusively with Central Coast Life & Style about her pregnancy, how she unwinds on vacation and what she loves about the region., writes Jess Verrender As a leading Australian model, reality television star, fashion designer, writer, brand ambassador and environmentalist, Elyse Knowles has built a stellar career using old fashioned hard work and her entrepreneurial instinct.

As big brands clamber to work with Elyse, she finds herself as an ambassador for Myer, Land Rover and TAG Heuer, as well as the face of Aveda.

She has now garnered an enviable position where she can pick and choose her partnerships and work with brands that align with her personal ethos.

But the Byron Bay based fashion icon is about to embark on her biggest challenge yet – the birth of her first child. In an adorable Instagram post, 8

Elyse and Josh Barker announced that they are expecting their first baby, due in March 2021.

The busy couple, who won Channel Nine’s The Block back in 2017, recently enjoyed a well-deserved break on the Central Coast, staying at one of Belle Escapes most stunning beach side holiday houses.

For Elyse, having experienced some morning sickness during the first trimester, it was perfect timing to enjoy a bit of relaxation in an idyllic location.

“Josh and I usually camp, so to stay in a beautiful luxury home is a real treat for us, it is very calming,” she told Central Coast Life & Style magazine.

The home, called Waters Edge at Forresters, is a truly phenomenal property offered by Belle Escapes, a premium holiday house brand that specialises in concierge services designed to deliver luxury and a personalised service to guests.

Upon arrival, Elyse and Josh were fervent with excitement. This dream home boasts understated luxury and panoramic ocean views, with floor to ceiling glass and sweeping 180-degree views across one of the coast’s most incredible vistas.

“We had no preconceived ideas about the location or what the house was going to be like, but we were blown away with what we found,” Elyse said.

“We especially loved having private access to the beach, over the rolling grass hills. There’s a beautiful room downstairs for everyone to chill – perfect for visiting friends or family, where you can open up all the glass doors to entertain with a barbecue or a picnic.”

The couple are both architecture and interior design enthusiasts.

Since winning The Block, Elyse and Josh have started a building business of their own, J&E Projects, while simultaneously becoming promising investors in the Australian property market. This creative couple have a keen interest and eye for details when it comes to home renovations and styling.

“We explored the property and had a good look around, looking at the way the house has been designed to capitalise on the natural light, airflow and access to the beach. We like taking into consideration all those elements of a build,” Elyse said.

Designed by prominent architect Darren Tye, the newly built Waters Edge at Forresters was constructed with the view as a focal point.

To stand anywhere in the house feels like being wrapped in the ocean.

Upstairs you’ll find a chic modern kitchen overlooking a spacious and airy lounge, with dining area that opens to a large deck with barbecue.

The blackbutt ceiling and panoramic ocean views are breathtaking.

Downstairs there are four beautifully designed coastal bedrooms (three with ocean views and the fourth with a garden view). In addition, there’s a huge al fresco area with glass bifolds, ocean views and a grassy yard leading to the sand via a private sandstone path.

“To be able to walk along the beach and then straight back up to your home is amazing,” Elyse said.

“As we walked along the beach, we enjoyed admiring the mix of beautiful old homes and other spectacular architectural builds that stood out.”

Not only did Elyse get to stay in paradise, she was also pampered by a talented group of hosts who work closely with Belle Escapes to provide personalised experiences for holiday guests.

Elyse enjoyed an in-house spa treatment where massage therapist Cate used iKOU organic De-Stress massage oil and hydrating body souffle for a relaxing massage. The experience included a calming iKOU face oil infused with neroli essential oil. iKou owner Naomi Whitfeld said Elyse loved the products, designed to deeply relax and hydrate the skin.

“Everything was organic and safe for Elyse’s pregnancy,” said Naomi.

“Our product development has always stayed true to our personal passion for the protection of animals, the environment and being a business that benefits others. We source and research the impact of our ingredients and methods of production to ensure iKOU is an ethical and sustainable business.”

Sounds perfect for Elyse, who was the face of WaterAid Australia between 2014 and 2018. A passionate environmentalist, she assisted the brand with educating the public and spread much needed awareness about giving back and taking immeasurable care of our shared planet.

“Being able to enjoy your career and your work life as much as possible, plus making the most of our day-to-day – that’s what Josh and I try to do on a daily, weekly, yearly basis.

Making sure we’re actually living and not stressing too much about work. Plus making sure we take time-out to enjoy each other’s company, to have a holiday, and explore our beautiful country,” she shared.

“And just breathe – sometimes we forget to do the simple things it seems. I think living by the coast, in Byron Bay, has helped us change our attitude a lot. We prioritise different things and make time for what makes us happy. Simple things like walking on the beach with our dogs makes us very happy.”

When asked if the Central Coast trip was her ‘Babymoon’, Elyse said that she hadn’t really thought about it or planned anything specific to welcome her baby.

“I don’t think we’ll get another chance to go away with Christmas coming, so maybe you could call it a Babymoon,” she laughed.

“Because we live on the beach at Byron, we always have lots of people wanting to come and stay with us over the summer holidays. The baby could be here as soon as February, so we probably won’t go away again.”

For two of the three evenings in which Elyse and Josh stayed at Forresters Beach, they had dinner provided by the Private Chef Catering team, local cooks who provide special private dining experiences for Central Coast residents and visitors.

Owner chef Dimitris Aronis described Elyse and Josh as ‘down to earth’.

He served them tapas on the first night and a full course meal on the second.

The tapas evening included grazing dishes such as miso and chilli glazed eggplant, torched scampi tail and roasted ricotta filled mushroom.

Dessert was roasted nectarine – a perfect stone fruit for the season – slow roasted in brown sugar with mascarpone cream.

On the second night, dinner started with roasted chestnut, truffle and jerusalem artichoke soup. Entrée was caramelised onion and goat’s cheese tart, and the main was a signature eye fillet with cauliflower cream, crispy

kale and roasted baby vegetables. Dessert included the melt-in-yourmouth textures of Belgium tempered chocolate and blueberry, all broken down to look pretty on the plate.

“Whilst we serve the meal, we talk to our clients about the produce we have on offer as well as how we work closely with local suppliers to utilise fresh, organic foods,” Dimitris said.

“We also provide a special range of salt and oils on the table – in fact, Elyse and her guests were big fans of our charcoal black salt.

We also brought along our own lemon infused verbena oil, which was also popular.”

Dimitris’ fresh and healthy meals suited Elyse down to a tee, as she is well known for being an advocate of a healthy lifestyle. Eating well and exercise are an integral part to Elyse’s daily regime, and what she associates with ‘having balance’.

WATERS EDGE at Forresters

Elyse said that she thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Central Coast, stepping away from her usual stomping ground, Byron Bay. “Leaving early, we were able to arrive at Forresters Beach by the afternoon,” she said.

“We enjoyed spending time in a different environment.

The beaches on the Central Coast are very different from northern NSW – the colour of the sand and the terrain with the rocks and sand dunes was refreshing.

“It has been nice to explore somewhere different. I think that’s what we all need to do this year, explore Australia whether it’s an hour or two from home or a big road trip in the car – go see somewhere we’ve never been before.”

Elyse on RENOVATING A HOLIDAY HOUSE “For me, my favourite renovation is a mix between an old heritage home or weatherboard cottage, maybe a queenslander that I can mix with a new contemporary build. I really love homes that have character and soul and I think the exterior needs to have that included also, but the interior also can’t be too cold or sparse.

“You also want to design with durability in mind, you don’t want someone to come along and wreck it.

You need to balance the luxury of a new build with the character of the original home, especially if the home is to accomodate a family, who want something warm, welcoming and homely.

“It’s about creating character where people want to come back and enjoy and experience the home, year after year. A place to create memories and get excited to book into again.”

It is everyone’s favourite time of the year to get outside, but too much sun can wreak havoc on your skin. Local ‘skin whisperer’ Vita Catanzariti shares her expertise on caring for skin during the hotter months.

The Central Coast is one of the most amazing places to be over the summer months.

With incredible beaches, divine al fresco eateries and scenic spots for outdoor activities, there is no doubt that December to February is the most popular time to get outside and enjoy all that the area has to offer.

Sunshine is good for the soul, and getting the right amount can have lots of mood lifting benefits.

“Around 80 per cent of the guests we see have skin pigmentation issues like sunspots and sun damage. We have a beautiful lifestyle here on the Central Coast, but along with that comes irregularity when it comes to skin,” she said.

When the pandemic hit, we pivoted from tailored pants to trackies and swapped stilettos for socks.

Now that life is starting to return to normal, it’s time to take the lounge out of loungewear and put fashion back on the agenda.

NSW’s Central Coast is rapidly turning into a fashionable and popular destination. While locals have known about the many hidden gems on the Central Coast for years, visitors to the area may be pleasantly surprised. Located within easy reach for day trips from Sydney, the Central Coast offers some beautiful country and coastal day trip options.

Here Megan and Andrew Atkins, long-time Central Coast locals and owners of Audi Alto in Gosford, share some of their favourite scenic drives in the Central Coast, NSW, taking in the countryside and the coastline in the best possible way.

A COUNTRY DRIVE If beautiful scenery is something you appreciate, you’ll love this stunning route. This scenic journey takes in a 66km stretch of road, with about an hour’s drive time – but it makes an ideal day trip, as there are plenty of experiences to be had along the way.

FIRST STOP: SOMERSBY Starting on Wisemans Ferry Road, head towards Somersby Falls, a beautiful National Park area where you will find yourself surrounded by lush rainforest and waterfalls. This is the ideal spot for a picnic – we recommend stopping next to Floods Creek for some truly stunning scenery.

A visit to Somersby would not be complete without calling in at the Australian Reptile Park. This is one of the Central Coast’s best-known attractions and a firm favourite with families and animal lovers of all ages! Located on the Pacific Highway, the park is home to Australian animals and reptiles from around the world. You can enjoy behindthe-scenes tours and exhibitions, and learn about the important conservation work being carried out here.

If by this time you’re thinking about food, there are a number of options here to suit your tastes. Or, if you prefer a more rustic ambience, call into The Harvest Kitchen for a coffee and a delicious slice of cake.

A COASTAL DRIVE 28km might not sound like a long or satisfying drive, but it can be when you’re on the Central Coast! This beautiful coastal route is packed with attractions to visit and things to do.

FIRST STOP: PATONGA Set out early and head to the south end of Patonga Drive, where you can enjoy a wonderful drive through bushland to reach The Patonga Boathouse. Overlooking the beach, this restaurant does a delicious breakfast, ideal to set yourself up for a day’s exploring.

This also puts you in the perfect location for a section of the Great North Walk that runs for 3km from Patonga Beach to Pearl Beach. Even if you don’t complete the whole route, you can enjoy some stunning views along the way.

SECOND STOP: UMINA BEACH If you’re feeling in the mood for some water-based activity, head back along Patonga Drive in the direction you came. This will take you onto Mount Ettalong Road, leading to lovely Umina Beach, where you can enjoy some first-rate surfing and paddleboarding with Mana SUP.

If you follow the old Pacific Highway south, this will eventually lead you to Saddles at Mt White. Recently voted one of the most beautiful restaurants in the world by Conde Nast, the afternoon tea here is rapidly becoming legendary.

On the way here, you can also pay a visit to Walkabout Wildlife Park at Calga, a quintessentially Australian experience where you can come face to face with a wide variety of native animals in a bush setting. This is a great day out for families, and the park also offers overnight stays. A great place to end a rewarding day.

Following this, you will probably have worked up an appetite!

We recommend following the coastline north until you join The Esplanade at Ettalong Beach. Here you will find The Box On The Water, the ideal place to stop for a drink and a bite to eat.

THIRD STOP: KILLCARE AND BOUDDI NATIONAL PARK If you drive over Rip Bridge, this will bring you to Killcare and into Bouddi National Park. If you haven’t already eaten, take advantage of a long lunch at Bells, Killcare. This famous restaurant is run by celebrity chef Sean Connolly, and the Sunday feast here is legendary!

Bouddi National Park coastal walk offers a wealth of natural beauty to enjoy. Start at Putty Beach and follow the Bouddi Coastal Walk if you want to see the ocean views to best advantage. Even if you don’t complete the walk, you will be met by stunning seascapes at every turn.

To complete the day, what could be better than enjoying a few cocktails as the sun goes down? The Lucky Bee is the ideal spot for dinner and drinks as you watch the setting sun. The perfect ending to a perfect day on the Central Coast.

TOP TALENT IN TERRIGAL

JOHNNY MANUEL

With incredible vocals, showcased on the 2020 season of The Voice, Terrigal talent Johnny Manuel talks to us about what’s next for him.

It is not often that an international superstar decides to put down roots on the Central Coast, so when American singer and Terrigal resident Johnny Manuel made his debut on The Voice earlier this year, locals got quite excited.

Tipped to take out the top rating talent show thanks to his amazing performance of Celine Dion’s famous track ‘My Heart Will Go On’, Johnny’s runner up placing behind Guy Sebastian’s brother Chris left many viewers shocked and disappointed. But the incredible crooner is still managing to live his dream, right here in our beautiful coastal region.

Since filming, Johnny has been busy writing original songs, performing around the Central Coast and Sydney, and he even got to enjoy COVID-19 lockdown as a permanent Terrigal resident.

Central Coast Life & Style were lucky enough to receive a private performance from Johnny at our launch event in October and the team were blown away by the sheer depth of Johnny’s range. His talent is everything that you saw on The Voice, and more.

“Through David, I continued to meet people and travelled all over the world for music. I eventually did America’s Got Talent in 2017 and my audition video went viral, so after that things really started to pick up.

“One of the people I met living in LA was Hugh Sheridan, an actor here in Australia. We became really good friends and he has a band called the California Crooners Club. He would invite me every year to come to Australia and tour with him – we’d go to Perth, Melbourne, Sydney.

So I was here two and a half years ago and went to a restaurant in Coogee, started a conversation with someone, and now we’re in a long term relationship and living together.”

Johnny’s partner grew up on the Central Coast, hence after living in Sydney together, then London, they decided to move back to the Central Coast at the start of 2020. And what a smart move and bonus for us locals.

“I’ve had so much support from local residents. I’ll go to Erina Fair or the gym and people say that they thought I should have won The Voice,” he laughs

Performing three songs, including ‘Say It’ (his original single recorded during his time on The Voice) and an original track written from his Terrigal apartment, Johnny demonstrated he has a true gift and passion for music, which comes across in his emotional performances.

“The show kept me really busy at the start of the year but now I’m getting to explore more of the coast, which is great. I love walking down to Terrigal, going to the beach and grabbing brekky. I think it’s one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.”

Born and raised in Flint, Michigan, a small city just outside Detroit in the USA, as a kid Johnny couldn’t be pulled away from the radio, obsessed with mimicking every note he heard. His parents soon realised that Johnny had a very special gift, so to further the development of his voice they encouraged him to join the church choir. By the age of ten he had recorded his first demo; a cover of Run DMC’s ‘It’s Like That’ and by the age of 14 he had a recording contract with Warner Records.

“It is such a great location because you’re close enough to travel to Sydney and then retreat home to the peacefulness of the coast at the end of the day,” he said.

“I toured at the time with big ‘back in the day’ pop acts like NSync and Jessica Simpson,” Johnny told Central Coast Life & Style.

“After that I continued singing, went to New York for a few years. Then at 17, I was introduced to David Foster who produced some big hits like ‘My Heart Will Go On’ and a bunch of songs by Whitney Houston.

Johnny mentioned that he has been visiting the area on and off for six years and was happy to now call it home.

Johnny has now written six songs from his apartment in Terrigal and has several shows on the agenda. He also hopes to work on a show at Laycock Theatre in Gosford.

“I really want to see something big musically happen here on the Central Coast. I’ve got lots of new music lined up to launch throughout 2021 too.” he said.

Central Coast & Style’s team boarded the charter boat on the Central Coast side of the Hawkesbury River. They enjoyed the sights and sounds of the river while indulging in some canapes. The team sailed around to the Cottage Point Inn for lunch, where they had the option of an a la carte meal or a seven-course tasting menu with vegetarian options available.

The event was a huge hit. GET SUMMER-READY Looking and feeling like a beach babe doesn’t need a lot of styling and planning. Just check out these tips as you prep your hair and yourself for a fun Central Coast summer.

Appearing on the scene in 2020, Arc. Est Terrigal started as a homewares and coffee shop that offered home meals to locals in lockdown.

But as restrictions lifted, the ‘Byron meets Bali’ bistro style restaurant has flourished, becoming a household name due to its unique style and service that sets it apart as something totally different for Terrigal.

Owned by hospitality veterans Ruth and Scott Macfadyen, who also run Terrigal’s beloved Chop n Grind burger joint up the street, the couple update the Arc menu in a subtle way every few weeks. With changes generally reflecting market availability for produce, as well as quality, that is coming in.

Fresh seafood is a highlight, for example a new cold plate that features a vibrantly fresh beetroot cured salmon, potted smoked trout, king prawns, marinated octopus, seared tuna and natural oysters.

Ruth and Scott’s aim was to create bistro style dining – not quite fine dining, but high quality food, and they have certainly hit the nail on the head.

It comes as no surprise considering that the pair have run a range of restaurants and cafés on the NSW Central Coast and in Sydney, with Scott working as head chef at multiple chef hatted restaurants throughout his career.

When Harrison’s closed down last year, the couple jumped at the opportunity to buy on the corner of Church and Campbell, a location they had always been interested in.

“The venue needed a renovation – we wanted something simple, not too fussy and laid back,” Ruth said.

Some of their most popular menu items at Arc include a 100 day grain fed sirloin or prawns wrapped in crispy noodles. Both have stayed on the menu, with some subtle changes.

On the dinner menu, there are two and three courses available. Carpaccio was recently added as an alternative to the very popular beetroot carpaccio and a yellowfin tataki tuna with gazpacho salsa (to the entrée) along with the option to add the cold seafood plate (to the mains).

The zucchini flowers are popular, as well as the slow roasted pork belly and the oysters are a must for any seating.

Desserts are fabulous and made in house. It is too difficult to pick a favourite, but the Chocolate mousse with salted caramel meringue is a decadence that should not be missed.

Ruth is very much involved with the wine list, ensuring there is a large selection of varieties. She pursues labels that are not widely stocked such as their Epsilon Shiraz (also pouring by the glass) as a value drop.

Another popular red is the Salomon Finniss Cabernet Sauvignon which is by the bottle.

The popular white at the moment is the Jim Barry Assyrtiko, which is available by the glass and the Kooyong Estate Chardonnay which is by the bottle.

They also have a wonderful Trial Batch Nebbiolo Rose from Pyrenees, which is available by the glass and very popular.

At the Copa,

Copacabana...

It is almost impossible to mention Copacabana Beach on the Central Coast without the Barry Manilow song of the same name popping into your head.

After all, it is a catchy tune.

Although the two share a name, that is where the similarity ends.

Manilow’s song was not inspired by the famous NSW beach, but rather a popular beachside hotel in Rio de Janeiro.

There is far more to this fantastic little beach town than the words of that famous song. With everything centred around the seafront, there are plenty of things to do in Copacabana on the NSW Central Coast.

CATCHING SOME WAVES We would be remiss if we did not recommend catching a wave or two whilst visiting the sandy beaches and crystal blue waters of Copacabana Beach.

Pro surfer Matt Wilkinson grew up surfing here, and the beach is popular for good reason. Located away from the noise and traffic of populated towns, it is considered one of the most relaxing holiday spots on the Central Coast. Some of the best swells are found at the northern point of the bay.

VIP APPEAL Barry Manilow may not have had our Copacabana in mind when he penned his famous song, but that does not mean we are without VIP appeal. Country music fans will recognise Kasey Chambers who has been one of our local residents since 2018.

Shady Palms CENTRAL COAST DINING SCENE GOES TROPPO

An Avoca restaurant that has housed two of the Coast’s most legendary dining experiences is embarking on its next exciting chapter as Shady Palms.

The bar and restaurant occupying the leafy two-acre homestead at 366 Avoca Drive was a riot of colour as Rojo Rocket and then offered a contemporary slice of Italy as Bombini. Now, it’s been reimagined as Shady Palms.

The restaurant is the latest Central Coast business from the team behind Mumbo Jumbos, and while there are still plenty of colourful cocktails inducing laidback island feels, Shady Palms emanates more of a vintage surf vibe than the Jamaican shack setting of its beachfront brother.

As a born-and-bred Coastie, Shady Palms co-owner Justin Hyland said the site has been home to some of the Coast’s most memorable drinking and dining, and they weren’t going to let a pandemic get in the way of securing their turn at the property.

“I grew up on the Coast and I’ve loved this location from Rojo through to Bombini. It’s such a great space and we really believed it was perfect for our next venture, regardless of the situation with COVID,” he said.

The menu has been designed to transport diners to an island paradise with fun and fresh flavours inspired by the Pacific.

While the tacos, burgers and seafood might seem familiar to fans of Mumbos, there are also juicy steaks and woodfired pizzas on offer at Shady Palms.

The tropical drinks couldn’t be more befitting of the tropical setting and, like the food, are designed to trigger relaxing holiday vibes the moment a cocktail arrives.

EXPLORE: Crackneck Lookout coastal walk Stretching north for about 1.5km, The Coast walking track offers some of the most breathtaking ocean views that the Central Coast has to offer.

Arrive at Crackneck Lookout for a photo opportunity and spread out a rug on the grass or set up at one of the picnic tables. You’ll be surrounded by panoramic views of Shelly Beach, views that continue along the Central Coast past Norah Head, Tuggerah Lake and The Entrance.

EAT: di Matteos café This Modern Australian restaurant and café has some strong Italian leanings, which means one thing – great coffee.

AVOCA AND TERRIGAL Five minutes apart and located right in the mid-section of the Central Coast, these two tourist hubs are popular for a reason.

While Terrigal is famous for its great surfing, swimming and snorkelling conditions and stunning beach, it is the Esplanade that commands centre stage. With shops, bars and a lively café culture, there are many dining options, and the various pubs and cocktail bars buzz on evenings and weekends. Just behind the beach, Terrigal Lagoon is a peaceful spot to swim and relax and the popular Skillion Lookout is a steep cliff that faces the ocean, offering panoramic views across the Central Coast.

A coastal village known for its sparkling sea and laid-back lifestyle, Avoca Beach is a family-friendly haven brimming with charm and character.

BOUDDI PENINSULA Where native wilderness meets sparkling waterways, the Bouddi Peninsula is one of the Central Coast’s prized hidden gems.

Nestled between Bouddi National Park and Box Head, it delivers some of the coast’s best attractions (on and off the beaten track) and is home to some delightful village suburbs like Killcare, Hardys Bay and Wagstaffe.

Delight your cultural fancies with exquisite art galleries, boutique shopping and fine dining along Killcare’s main shopping strip. You can also enjoy a five-star experience at the famed Bells at Killcare, one of the coast’s premier boutique hotels. Wander along sandstone cliffs and coastal heaths while taking in the outstanding beauty of the Bouddi Coastal Walk. Serving freshly made Banh Mi with house-made roast pork belly as well as local coffee by Glee Roasters, The Lucky Bee menu favourite is the grilled cheese melt with three cheeses, pickles and dusted with curry powder.

EXPLORE: Boardwalk – The Skillion walk Walk all along the Terrigal beachfront Esplanade and then up along paths and boardwalks to arrive at The Haven and The Skillion.

The Skillion might be a bit of challenge for some, as it is steep with steps, but it is worth it for the panoramic ocean views. There are also several restaurants and cafés in The Haven area with ocean views.

EAT: Yellowtail This small modern Australian restaurant is known to be one of the best local spots for quality food and wine.
