Dear reader,
Spring has arrived on the Central Coast, bringing with it that unmistakable shift - softer light, warmer days and the promise of long afternoons by the water. It’s a season that reminds us to slow down, to savour time with friends and family, and to rediscover the beauty in the place we’re lucky enough to call home.
In this issue, we celebrate the season through our Spring Sessions feature, a showcase of the Coast’s most memorable ways to dine by the water, from long lunches at Peats Bite to sunset sips at Amarilla and ferry-side escapes across Pittwater. We also turn our attention to weddings and celebrations at Meribella, a behindthe-scenes look at 2025 Central Coast Artist of the Year, and a staycation guide that highlights some of the finest places to pause and recharge close to home.
As the pages unfold, you’ll find stories that reflect the rhythm of spring - indulgent yet relaxed, inspiring yet grounded in the Coast’s unique lifestyle. From fashion and food to property and travel, this issue invites you to lean in to the season in all its golden warmth.
We hope it captures the spirit of spring: generous, joyful and full of possibility. May it inspire you to slow down, embrace the season of growth, and make time for the moments that matter most.
With gratitude,
Cathy Baker
Long lunches, sunset sips and waterside escapes to some of the region’s most loved venues
There’s a quiet kind of magic to spring on the Coastthe light turns golden, the air softens, and days stretch just a little longer. It’s a season that stirs appetite and adventure, inviting us to linger: to let lunch roll into the late afternoon, to savour a drink by the water as the sun slips away, to embrace the beauty of time well spent with friends and family.
Whether you arrive by boat, find yourself on a road trip beyond your local or wander in from the sand, these coastal favourites capture the spirit of spring on the Coast - warm, generous and effortlessly indulgent.
Peats Bite belongs firmly in the latter camp, however its loyal long-time clientele know all too well that its privacy is central to this idyllic destination’s charm. Accessible only by boat, seaplane, or helicopter, Peats Bite is a Hawkesbury River retreat that has long been a byword for escape - not just from the city, but from the rush of daily life itself.
ONCE A BELOVED SEASONAL DESTINATION, PEATS BITE HAS HAD A RECENT RENOVATION AND NOW WELCOMES GUESTS ALL YEAR ROUND.
Its pier stretches into the river as a simple promise, inviting visitors to step ashore and surrender to the rhythm of long lunches, the same warm hospitality of over 40 years, and water that glistens playfully on those perfect Australian afternoons. With the addition of a pool, winter no longer closes its doors, as yoga retreats and cool-season escapes have found a home here too - making Peats Bite as much a year-round sanctuary as a summer idyll.
Lunch is the heart of it. One sitting by booking only, Thursday through Sunday, designed to unfold slowly across an afternoon. Plates arrive in sequence, generous and unhurried, a menu built around quality produce and the East Coast art of taking your time. To stay overnight is to extend that rhythm further, with five intimate rooms and a guest house creating the perfect scale for intimate getaways, small gatherings, or simply the luxury of waking to the wilderness.
Everything at Peats Bite is luxury and ease in equal measure. Transfers can be arranged by private boat, plane, or helicopter, with Sydney Seaplanes offering charters that set the tone before you even arrive. Events, too, carry the same spirit. From day meetings and private functions to weddings and small conferences, the setting turns every gathering into something rare - framed by the river, anchored by good food and perfect service. With seating for up to 100 (though 80 feels ideal), the scale is intimate, personal, and entirely its own.
Peats Bite isn’t only a destination or a restaurant - it’s a pause button, a reminder that life can be lived more slowly, more deeply, with the river as your backdrop and time on your side.

A visit to The Joey begins long before you arrive. From Ettalong Beach, a scenic 20-minute ferry ride takes you across Brisbane Water, tracing the coastline past the untouched beauty of Bouddi National Park and the clear shallows of Lobster Beach. Out in deeper waters, you might spot whales during the winter season, and dolphins are a familiar presence year-round. As the ferry rounds into Pittwater, sunbathing seals often greet you from the rocks below the Palm Beach lighthouse, a quiet sign that you’ve almost arrived.
For many, part of The Joey’s charm is the journey itself, a scenic escape from the Central Coast that always ends with a warm welcome, great food, and that unmistakable feeling of having arrived somewhere special.
Set on the water’s edge at Palm Beach, The Joey, still known affectionately as the Barrenjoey Boatshed due to the original building being a historic icon, is a venue that has long drawn locals and visitors alike. While its relaxed charm has made it a favourite for casual dining, it’s also become one of the region’s most desirable locations for weddings and special events. There’s a natural ease to the space. The architecture is lighthanded, allowing the setting to speak for itself: timber textures, open-air views, and the sounds of gentle rolling waves. It’s elegant without being over-styled, inviting without pretense.
Inside, a waterfront restaurant, bar, and private dining area offer flexibility for events of all sizes. Whether you’re celebrating a milestone, gathering with family and friends, or planning a wedding that feels intimate and elevated, The Joey lends itself to occasions that are thoughtful and distinctly memorable.
The menu, shaped by a modern Australian approach with a strong seafood focus, is both refined and approachable. Fresh Sydney rock oysters are served with mignonette and lemon, while chilled tiger prawns arrive on ice with classic seafood sauce. The tuna crudo, dressed in ponzu with avocado purée and eshallot oil, is a guest favourite, as is the lemon pepper calamari with chipotle. Grilled baby octopus with chermoula, kalamata olives and almond crème shows off the kitchen’s creativity, while butterflied prawns with jalapeño tomato salsa and garlic-baked scallops make for a perfect start to any meal. Heartier options include the pasta alla vodka with chilli, basil and stracciatella, a generous ribeye on the bone with Café de Paris butter, and a classic beef burger with house-made Joey sauce and chips. It’s a menu that strikes a balance, offering options to share, dishes that feel a little fancy, and relaxed plates perfect for a post-lighthouse walk lunch.
The in-house team of dedicated chefs and experienced event staff, delivers service that’s attentive without being formal. Seasonal menus showcase quality ingredients, and every detail, from enquiry to final toast, is handled with care.
More than a venue, The Joey is a feeling: relaxed, refined, and deeply connected to its coastal setting. It’s a place people return to, not just for the view, but for the experience of celebrating somewhere that feels as special as the moment itself.
The Joey is open daily, with kiosk service from 7am to 11am, and lunch from 11:30am to 3pm. Sunset Happy Hour runs from 3pm to 5pm every day, the perfect time to gather with friends for a drink as the sun sets over Pittwater from the Jetty Bar. Walk-ins are welcome, and bookings are available for those planning ahead.
Located at Governor Philip Park, Palm Beach, The Joey is where the Central Coast meets coastal Sydney; a relaxed, beautiful spot for good food and memorable moments.
Perched by the boat ramp at Terrigal Haven, Amarilla is an understated yet refined invitation to linger, share, and savour. The name, meaning “yellow” in Spanish, is a quiet nod to what came before. For eight years, chef-owner Scott Price led Yellowtail, a hatted Terrigal institution celebrated for its fine dining and attentive service. Earlier this year, Yellowtail closed its doors not as an ending, but as part of a natural evolution as Amarilla opens the next chapter - more relaxed, designed to
welcome people more often, yet still underpinned by the same commitment to quality.
Since Scott opened the Haven Beach kiosk in 2021, he and his team have been working hard to fulfil their vision of a Mediterranean jewel on the waterfront, offering panoramic ocean views that feel tailor-made for sunsets and sangria. You arrive for the food, but stay for the views, the atmosphere and the incredible menu - a celebration of Spanish tapas and Mediterranean generosity.
Cocas (Spanish-style flatbreads), snapper croquetas, kingfish crudo, patatas bravas with just the right hit of spice, duck and mushroom empanadas and a grilled seafood platter that taste like the sea are amongst the current seasonal favourites, perfect to share.
For those who want to linger longer, there are larger dishes, too. ‘Cochinillo’ - rolled roasted pork belly with charred peppers, cauliflower purée, and Pedro Ximenez pears - is one of the standouts, a dish that feels made for conversation stretched over hours and glasses refilled more than once.
The drinks list boasts a smart selection of Australian, Spanish and other fine wines plus cocktails inspired by the sun and the sea, while unstaged Sangria sessions run on Sundays from 4pm, where sunsets and live music become reason enough to stay into the evening.
Much of the Yellowtail family remains, too, shaping Amarilla in their own way. Scott has returned to the kitchen alongside Head Chef Alastair, building a collaborative menu that balances tradition with invention. On the floor, Fabiano and Andrew lead with warmth, creating an atmosphere where regulars and newcomers alike are welcomed home.

There’s a new arrival in Ettalong, though to call Tiger Mama a restaurant would be to undersell it. This funky oriental establishment is a story, a tribute, an atmosphere, and a dining experience all at once.
The name an ode to the owner’s mother, a woman remembered for her discipline, her work ethic, and her fierce heart. Every corner of Tiger Mama is uncompromising and immaculate: the food, the cocktails, the interiors, and the way it all comes together.
The menu is built around the joy of sharing. Platters arrive at the table designed not for one, but for many - smoky Beef Rendang, slowbraised and rich with spice, the aptly named Weeping Tiger, duck platters carved to share, bao, dumplings. Each dish is a riot - layered, punchy, and unapologetically vibrant. “The joy is as much in the people around the table as in the food itself,” the team says, and you can taste that ethos in every bite.
Alongside the food is a cocktail list that has already begun to gather a following. At its centre, the Yuzu Spicy Tommy’s Margarita, a drink that is zesty, fiery, and addictive. There are Japaneseinspired sours, strawberry and basil smashes,
elegant gimlets and more, each one crafted to stand up to the boldness of the food, while carrying its own sense of play.
But perhaps the first thing you’ll notice at Tiger Mama is the room itself. Inspired by 1920s Shanghai, the interiors walk a line between colonial charm and dramatic elegance. Terracotta walls, deep forest greens, vintage green glass chandeliers, the palette is warm and moody, but softened with tan leather lounges and intimate corners. It feels like a place where you could stay all afternoon, or well into the night.
In the end, Tiger Mama is less about dining out, and more about the vibe - one of abundance, energy, and connection. A place where food and story entwine, where discipline meets generosity. Where the fierce and the tender sit around the same table, side by side.
Ettalong has a new heartbeat, and it roars.

Perched above Terrigal Beach, Meribella is a destination that feels as though it was perfectly made for long, lingering afternoons meandering effortlessly into golden-hour evenings. A nod to its views, the restaurant takes its name from the Italian for “beautiful sea” - with that spirit running through every detail.
The space itself is a study in understated coastal elegance. Sunlight spills through expansive windows, bouncing off soft, neutral interiors that frame sweeping ocean views. There’s a sense of ease here, as time slows down with the tide. It’s the kind of place that encourages you to savour the moment, whether with a crisp Champagne or a decadent plate shared with friends and family.
Meribella’s menu celebrates the best of land and sea, with a refined yet approachable style. Expect oysters dressed with just the right touch, delicate crudo, and local seafood that speaks for itself. The mains balance indulgence with freshness - think pasta ribbons tangled with seasonal produce, or beautifully cooked cuts paired with vibrant sides. Desserts are worth saving space for, each one as artful as the view.
As the seasons shift, Meribella leans into the flavours of spring - lighter, brighter plates designed to complement balmy days and sea breezes. It’s a reminder that dining here is as much about connection as cuisine: a toast with friends, a celebration with family, or simply an escape from the everyday.
With its blend of effortless style, fine food and that incomparable Terrigal backdrop, dining at Meribella is an experience like few others. A place where the Central Coast’s natural beauty meets world-class hospitality, and where every visit feels like a celebration of coastal living.

UNREASONABLE HOSPITALITY BY WILL GUIDARA
In this inspiring bestseller, former Eleven Madison Park co-owner Will Guidara shares how extraordinary hospitality can transform any business into a place of magic, meaning, and unforgettable experiences.
In this moving novel from the author of Tuesdays with Morrie, a war veteran journeys through the afterlife where five unexpected people reveal how his seemingly ordinary life had extraordinary meaning.
Why mums are moving their mothers groups from WhatsApp to Wombee.
When Central Coast entrepreneur and mum Lauren Perrett created BubbaDesk - Australia’s first coworking space with onsite (close proximity) childcare - she reimagined the way parents balance work and family. But outside of work, she kept hearing the same stories from mums again and again: how clunky it was to find a mothers group, or worse - missing out completely.
In Australia, new mums often have to wait until six or more weeks after birth to be connected into a mothers group through the community. “That’s weeks of navigating early motherhood without the daily support of others who are in the same stage,” Lauren says.
Wombee lets you form a group before your baby arrives, so you’ve already built those strong connections for the early days when you really do need that support.
“Community-led mothers groups are wonderful, but they’re matched only by your baby’s birth date - not by shared interests or personalities,” she adds. “If you miss the first meet-up, you might never get connected. And if you’re a second-time mum, you might not be offered a group at all.”
Even when you do connect, the reality can be messy. Awkward number swaps, endless WhatsApp threads, and 100 back-and-forth messages just to plan a coffee. Details get lost, catch-ups fizzle, and that much-needed support slips away.
Lauren’s answer is Wombee - a purpose-built app that helps mums find, connect, and grow together.
Whether you’re in pregnancy, navigating newborn days, chasing toddlers, or weathering tantrums, Wombee makes it simple to join the right group for your stage of motherhood - and be part of as many as you like.
Already have a group? Bring it into Wombee and never lose meet-up details again. Wombee is purpose-built for mothers groupswith one simple hub to plan catch-ups without the 100-message chaos, keep all the details in one place, and access upcoming expert-led community channels offering advice that actually helps. No noisy feeds. No endless opinions you didn’t ask for.
Just genuine connection, organisation, and support designed for mums.

In a quiet studio tucked away in Umina, Michaela James is at work - not chasing spectacle, but exploring the beauty of the everyday. A bowl of apples, a tilted glass, the soft gleam of morning light on a stovetop coffee maker. Her subjects are simple, but by her hand, they become something more. Contemplations, if you will. Moments of quiet that keep unfolding, well after the paint has dried.
Named the inaugural Central Coast Artist of the Year - founded by Karen Bloomfield of Bloomfield Fine Art Gallery - Michaela’s recent recognition is both a celebration of an exceptional local talent and a reflection of a wider creative groundswell in the region. “There’s such a healthy mix of established and emerging artists here now,” she says. “It feels like a kind of renaissance. People want the ‘real stuff’ again.”
A Central Coast local, Michaela’s work is represented by Bloomfield Fine Art Gallery in Terrigal, where she’s preparing for a solo show in June 2026. “There’s been a noticeable shift, even in the past couple of years,” she says. “People want to live with good art. They want to build their homes around it.”
It’s a mindset that suits her practice. Michaela’s process is formalist - thoughtful, observant, intellectual. She works slowly, intuitively, and her paintings evolve over weeks, sometimes months, moving from observation to abstraction and back again. “I don’t arrange anything,” she says. “I paint what’s already there, then let the work take over.”
Originally born and raised in Sydney, Michaela grew up in a household where culture was the norm. Her father was an academic, and regular outings to galleries, plays, music events were a family affair.
But it was a year abroad that changed everything, when her father’s sabbatical took her to Oslo and Paris. It was, she says, an awakening. “Suddenly I was in galleries in Norway, in museums in France, on trains with books I didn’t understand yet. It lit something up in me.” This immersion in art, music, literature - in thought - heavily influenced Michaela as she returned to Australia with the singular goal of becoming an artist.
Michaela came home and studied Fine Arts at UNSW, where her graduating work caught the attention of critic John McDonald. Later, she returned to philosophy, seeking a deeper understanding of the ideas that underpin her work, however painting always remained her anchor.
Still life became her chosen form - not because it was trending, but because it was honest. “There’s something incredibly rich in the domestic,” she says. “It’s not just what we see, but how we live. Grounded in the material world, without relying on fixed interpretations.”
Norway, too, left its mark. Michaela later returned there with her own family, drawn to the country’s simplicity, egalitarianism, and reverence for art and nature - what the Norwegians call friluftsliv, a life lived simply, in the ‘free air’. That philosophy threads its way through her practice today; modest materials, an authentic process, quiet patience.
To live with one of Michaela’s works is to notice more. “Every time you see it, you’ll see something different,” she says. “It gives forever, not loudly, but in a deeper way.”
As she prepared for the Bloomfield anniversary exhibition in September and began laying the groundwork for her 2026 solo show, Michaela was quietly excited. “I felt like I was in the process of beginning again,” she said. “There was a lot more I wanted to say, and to see.”
And perhaps that’s the heart of it. In Michaela’s hands, even the most unassuming object - a coffee cup, a peach, a beam of afternoon light - becomes a whole story. Not flashy, or loud, but honest - and worth waiting for.

Some homes are built for shelter. Others, for escape. And then there are homes like LouLou Beach Housea place designed to hold light, sea air, and endless calm in equal measure.
Set high above the tide line at Forresters Beach, Loulou is the kind of beachfront sanctuary that feels both impossibly luxurious and entirely grounded. From every room, the view is uninterrupted. From every angle, the ocean beckons. But as owner Martin Green recalls, it wasn’t always this way.
When Martin first stepped inside the home in 2018, it was heavy with shadow - dated, dark, and slightly worn. And yet, he saw great potential. “I was overwhelmed by the position,” he explains. “The views were breathtaking from every room, with direct access to the beach only steps away. I’d never seen anything like it. My intent was never to demolish the existing house, but rather to bring it back to life.”
A former KPMG Partner and long-time art collector, Martin was inspired by years travelling through the French and Italian Riviera. He had a vision of a beautiful Mediterranean coastal home that was connected to its natural environment, with good use of natural light and a focus on luxurious, natural materials that would evoke a sense of timelessness.
And so, Martin set out to create a home that felt timeless, light-filled, and entirely connected to the sea.
Working with the existing floor plan, the renovation focused on amplifying natural light and revealing the home’s full potential. “A new interior design didn’t mean ripping everything out,” Martin explains. “We embraced the chance to build upon its existing strengths.”
Skylights now punctuate the ceiling, ushering in soft northern sun. Walls, once solid and sombre, are reimagined in splitsurface Callala sandstone - an earthy, textural gesture that blurs the line between inside and out. Underfoot, a pale limed ash flooring from Mafi grounds the home in calm. The home feels coastal and relaxed, yet elevated - a space that really lets you exhale.
And exhale you will. Loulou is a house designed for stillness, indulgence and joy all at once. In the French-inspired family kitchen, a generous marble island is the heart of the home - shared meals, late-night wines, and early-morning coffee all play out across its cool surface. The Statuarietto marble extends into the bathrooms too, not only bringing colour, texture and movement to the home but its own natural beauty that will change and patina over time. These stunning accents are further complemented by travertine flooring and a sculptural stone bath imported from Indonesia, perfectly placed to soak up the sea views (and whales breaching offshore in the off-season).
No two bedrooms are the same, but each carries a common thread: books. “I’m a big reader,” Martin says, smiling. “So I had libraries built into every room. The joinery and wardrobes
in each bedroom are custom designed in a coastal lime timber finish that contributes to an Australian vernacular that is very particular to Loulou Beachouse.”
It’s this sense of narrative, of care, intention, and memory, that sets Loulou apart. And while the exterior remains largely untouched, subtle interventions - sandstone cladding, warm woodgrain battens from Knotwood - soften and modernise the structure, lending it a kind of coastal quietude that feels entirely in sync with its setting.
Today, Loulou Beach House is available for stays for those looking to press pause and reconnect to the coast and to themselves. Whether it’s a long weekend, a family gathering, or a solo sabbatical, there’s a sense here that time slows down.
And maybe that’s what Martin envisioned all along.
“This was my dream,” he shares. “To wake up, see the ocean, and feel at peace. I wanted others to have the chance to experience that, too.”
