WILL SHE BE FOUND? RENOWNED EXPLORER VISITS ATCHISON

On Tuesday, September 3rd, high students from Central School joined students from other local schools at Atchison High School to listen to Dr. Robert Ballard and Admiral Tim Gallaudet discuss their plans to locate the remains and wreckage of Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan and their Lockheed 10-E Electra airplane.

The event began with Dr. Renee Scott, new superintendent of Atchison Public Schools, introducing Kansas Senator Jerry Moran. Superintendent Scott praised Senator Moran, of Great Bend, Kansas, for his years of service and his dedication to the state and its business and educational interests. Then Senator Moran introduced our first speaker, U.S. Navy Admiral Timothy Gallaudet.

Admiral Gallaudet is now in charge of NOAA. The NOAA is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The admiral and Dr. Ballard have worked together for many years.

Admiral Gallaudet talked about how Dr. Ballard helped pave the way for his own career as a Navy oceanographer. He also explained that the two are currently working together to find Amelia Earhart.

Mr. Ballard then spoke about how he has been interested in the ocean since he was young kid.

He discussed how he always wondered what the ocean was like and what it had to show him.

He first became interested in the ocean by looking at National Geographic magazines. He also discussed his struggles with dyslexia and how he has worked hard to overcome his challenges in reading. When Dr. Ballard grew up he did just as he had planned as a kid, he explored the ocean for years in the Navy and in the early 1980s he invited a technique called telepresence which helped him find the Titanic in 1985, even though that was only a cover story for a secret mission. Telepresence uses robots to search to bottom of the ocean. Now he’s going to use telepresence to discover Amelia Earhart’s plane.

In conclusion, the big story of the presentation was: What could of happened to Amelia Earhart?

Nobody knows for sure what happened to her really. There are different theories on what happened. Some think that she arrived on an island in the Pacific. Some believe that her body washed out to sea and some or all her bones got eaten by fish in the ocean. Some believe that she was never near an island at all and she went somewhere else. It could be possible that she made it to an island but died because the lack of food and water. A female skull has been located on an island, but it has not yet been tested. Dr. Ballard said that the skull is now in Florida awaiting testing. Dr. Ballard believes that the wreckage of her plane can be found using telepresence off the coast of some small islands in the Pacific. We will just have to wait and see.

Welcome to central!

New Principal LaTisha Downing Joins Central School

by Kayela Craig Central School is excited to have Ms. Downing as our new principal, our third principal in three years. We hope that she is here to stay. Central Chronicles decided to ask her a few questions so that we can get to know her better. Her answers follow below.

Q: What is it like to be the principal of Central School?

Being the principal at Central is busy but a good kind of busy. I am very excited to be in this role to be an encourager, leader, and of service to teachers and students.

Q: What do you like about us students and the teachers?

I like that every person in our building is unique. Everyone has their own personalities and uniqueness and I really like that.

Q: How long have you been teaching?

I have been teaching for 18 years.

Q: What places have you taught at?

I taught at Atchison Middle School, Atchison Elementary School, Aiken Elementary in Dallas, TX, and Truman Middle School in St. Joseph, MO. Q: Do you like in Atchison? What do you like about Atchison?

Yes! I grew up in Atchison. It is my hometown. I like it because my family lives here (mom, sister, and brother).

Q: What are your plans for our school this year?

I plan to make sure Central has all the supports and resources to help students and teachers be successful.

Welcome to Atchison!

New Superintendent Renee Scott Joins Atchison Schools

by Blade Sharp This year the USD 409 family welcomed a new Superintendent to the district.

Renee Scott recently transferred to Atchison Public Schools from Garden City, Kansas. She brings along with her twenty-six years of education. She has served as a junior and senior high school teacher and as an associate principal.

We are very happy to have her in the Atchison Public Schools family. Central Chronicles asked her a few questions about her career experiences and plans for Atchison schools. Here are her responses.

1. How are you enjoying the Superintendent position here at USD 409?

I am enjoying the job as Superintendent of Schools for USD 409. Each day is Photo Courtesy of USD 409 different, which is the type of job situation I like the best. Every day when I wake up, I am excited to go to work, and that to me is a sign that this has been a very good decision!

2. How has the transition from Garden City to here gone so far?

The transition has gone really well! I have been able to get in all of the schools and multiple classrooms every week, so that has been my favorite part so far. Atchison and the district as a whole is quite a bit smaller than Garden City, but that has been another part of the transition that I am enjoying.

3. What do you enjoy most about Atchison?

The people! Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. I also am enjoying getting out to the many water sources and fishing when I can in the evenings.

4. What made you decide to take this job at USD 409?

I had been an assistant superintendent and wanted to eventually lead a school as a superintendent. But I wanted a district that was diverse, as I have only taught in and/or worked in very diverse districts my entire career. When Atchison came open, I thought that the school was the right size, had some challenges as well as some awesome strengths and potential. I decided to apply.

5. What are your future plans for USD 409?

This first year I am wanting to build relationships with staff, students, parents, and community--the stakeholders of the district. During this year, I want to take a close look at the processes in place that are working as well as try to determine which processes might need refined or changed.

6. Is there anything else you'd like our readers to know about you?

I just hope that those who are getting to know me realize that I am approachable and I want to get to know students in the district. After being in Garden City for sixteen years, I feel like I am starting over in terms of meeting people and building relationships, so it is taking me a while to remember names and faces, but keep reminding me of who you are. the return of science Dr. Meyers Joins Central School as Much Needed Science Teacher

by Regan Magee and Osage McCuen We have a new science teacher at Central School, his name is Dr. Jay Meyers. He’s an experienced science teacher. He’s been teaching for thirty one years. He retired from Missouri to come work here in Kansas, also he has a doctorate and has taught at teh college level.

Q: What was your first impression of Central?

It is obviously different than my last 24 years where I lead 30 students per class with NO air conditioning!

Q: What do you do in your free time?

All things outdoors: camping, hiking, hunting, and fishing.

Q: Where are you from?

I grew up in Stanberry and Savannah, MO. I currently live in the countryside of St. Joseph.

Q: What made you come to Central?

I had been wanting to retire from Missouri and teach in Kansas to take advantage of an extra income.

This was the first science position available.

Q: Favorite subject to teach?

academic advancement Central Students Discuss Afternoon Electives Program

by Osage McCuen and Regan Magee We interviewed some of the students at Central School students asking them about elective classes they would like. We also asked them what electives they would like to take again and why. This article has some of their answers.

What is one elective you have taken this semester that would take again and why?

Rock and Roll because it was cool to see how it evolved.

Spree Killers because it was mysterious.

Band because I love playing guitar.

Basketball because I love to hoop.

Central Chronicles and I don’t know if I will take it again, but I will be thinking about it so yea…

Rock Painting because its was so colorful.

Construction class because it is cool.

Creative Writing: Mr. Patterson’s poem class because it made us think how artist’s think.

Games: because it was fun.

What are some new electives you would like to take?
