La Grande Vadrouille From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

La Grande Vadrouille (literally: The Great Stroll. Released in the USA as Don’t Look Now... We’re Being Shot At!) is a 1966 comedy film about how the crew of a Royal Air Force B-17 Flying Fortress shot down over Paris must then make their way through German-occupied France with the main help of two French citizens with very different mindsets. For over forty years (until 2008, when Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis attracted over 20,000,000 cinemagoers), La Grande Vadrouille was the most successful French film in France of all time, topping the box office with over 17,200,000 viewers in cinemas. It remains the third most successful film ever in France, of any nationality, behind the 1997 version of Titanic, and Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis.the title role. As of May 2007, it was announced that actress Erica Durance of the WB’s Smallville was a front-runner for a 2008 remake. However, subsequent reports have identified British actress Sienna Miller as the favorite to take the role, along with Rodriguez’s Grindhouse

star Rose McGowan. According to Elle magazine, McGowan has been cast in the title role. According to the New York Observer, Universal Studios has backed out of funding the movie because of Rodriguez’s insistence to cast McGowan in the title role. Executives reportedly do not think that she can carry a movie with a budget close to $100 million. Once Universal learned of Rodriguez’s decision to cast McGowan they slashed the budget significantly. Rodriguez denies this, saying, “Universal had initially signed on for $60 million, but then when we were done with the script it wound up at closer to $82 million.” The filmmaker is currently shopping the project around to other studios in the hopes of getting more money. He has cited the fact that most of the movie takes place in outer space as the reason for the rise in budget, and that “we don’t want the movie to look like the original.” Rodriguez backed out of the project, and in June 2009, Entertainment Weekly reported that Robert Luketic will be directing the remake with a different studio. Plot Summer 1941. Over German Nazi occupied France, a Royal Air Force B-17 gets lost after a mission and is shot down over Paris by German flak. The crew, Reginald, Peter Cunningham and

Alan MacIntosh, parachute out right over the city. They are hidden by a house painter, Augustin Bouvet, and the grumbling conductor of the Opéra National de Paris, Stanislas Lefort. Involuntarily, Lefort and Bouvet get themselves involved in the manhunt against the aviators led by Wehrmacht Major Aschbach. They have to help the flyboys to go back to England with the help of Resistance fighters and sympathizers. Cast - André Bourvil : Augustin Bouvet - Louis de Funès : Stanislas Lefort - Terry-Thomas : Sir Reginald (“Big Moustache”) - Claudio Brook : Peter Cunningham - Mike Marshall : Alan MacIntosh - Marie Dubois : Juliette - Pierre Bertin : Juliette’s grandfather - Andrea Parisy : Sister Marie-Odile - Mary Marquet : The Upper Sister - Benno Sterzenbach : Major Aschbach - Paul Préboist : The fisherman

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/20/world/ europe/20iht-obits.html Advertise on NYTimes.com Obituary: Gérard Oury, 87, director of classic comedies Published: Thursday, July 20, 2006 SAINT-TROPEZ, France — The French film director Gérard Oury, whose decades-old comedies are part of France’s collective memory and remain hits today, has died, officials said Thursday. He was 87. Oury, whose best known films included “Les Aventures de Rabbi Jacob” (The Adventures of Rabbi Jacob) from 1973, died at his home in Saint-Tropez on Wednesday, the Var municipality said. He was nearly blind in his final years. Oury’s best-known films, often involving the bald, irascible figure of Louis de Funès, exemplified the comic virtues of high tempo and careful construction but were also often grounded in events of the day or in the recent past. In “Les Aventures,” de Funès plays a bigoted French businessman forced to impersonate a rabbi to escape from assassins.

The film, which came out at the time of the 1973 Yom Kippur war, was enormously popular but also earned Oury a string of death threats. In a move that might have come from one of his own films, he responded by carrying a pistol concealed in a Louis Vuitton bag. “It was a risk to deal with religion, racism and xenophobia through comedy,” he said in a 2001 interview with Le Figaro. “We put the three great religions together - Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The mental and religious mix-up shown in the film corresponds to my own deep convictions, my fears and my doubts.” Representing a tradition very different from that of such “New Wave” directors as Jean-Luc Godard or François Truffaut, whose films have tended to dominate the image of French cinema abroad, Oury began his career as an actor. The son of a Jewish violinist, he fled France in 1940 during the Nazi occupation. He returned after World War II and directed his first film in 1959. Besides “Les Aventures,” he is known for the 1966 movie “La Grande Vadrouille,” known in Britain as “Don’t Look Now - We’re Being Shot At,” which is considered his most popular film.

He directed nearly two dozen movies, among them “La Folie des Grandeurs” (The Folly of Grandeur), in 1971, and, in 1999, his last movie, “La Schpountz,” a remake of a 1938 Marcel Pagnol success. Oury’s most recent movies failed to match the popularity and big audiences of his earlier films, now classics. President Jacques Chirac said in a statement that Oury was “the master of laughter and good humor” and called his movies “an integral part of our culture and our imagination.”
