DIRECTOR Center for World Music
The Center for World Music and Mingei International Museum share the belief that the world's performing and visual arts traditions help us express and understand what it means to be human. We are very excited about this opportunity to join with Mingei to present and support our shared interest in the world's artistic traditions. This new partnership allows us to showcase visual and performing artists from here at home and from abroad in one beautifully designed location in the heart of San Diego.
We welcome you to join us for all six presentations of the curated series exploring the music and dance of Indonesia (Bali), Ghana, Cuba, the Arab world, Korea, and Spain.

THE MUSIC & DANCE OF BALI: I Nyoman Wenten and Gamelan Burat Wangi
THE MUSIC AND DANCE OF BALI
With a career spanning five decades, I Nyoman Wenten is one of Bali’s most versatile master musicians and dancers. Along with his wife, choreographer and dancer Nanik Wenten, and his ensemble Gamelan Burat Wangi, he will lead us through an entrancing evening of gong orchestra and elaborately costumed dance. The gamelan’s shimmering rhythms of drum, metallophones, and gongs accompany a captivating dance drama based on a text from the ancient Hindu Ramayana.

EXPRESSIONS OF JOY: Festival Music and Dance of Korea
SAN DIEGO KOREAN PUNGMUL ENSEMBLE
Join us for an exciting evening of dance and music inspired by the percussion-centered pungmul traditions of the Korean peninsula. Pungmul is a colorful and dynamic Korean tradition of folk performance that features drumming but also includes lively dancing and singing.
Rooted in village culture, pungmul was originally performed as part of farm work, at harvest festivals, and to accompany shamanistic rituals or mask dances. Villagers would come together to play and dance to the rhythms, expressing solidarity and relieving the hardships of their daily lives. Also known as nogak (farmer’s music), pungmul was recognized as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Korea in 1966.
