A Child Is Born for Us God’s Revelation: For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isa. 9:6-7)

Joy to the world! The Lord is come!

Our Response: When the world is looking for answers… Who would send a baby? When the world is yearning for peace… Who would send a baby? When the world is hungry for hope… Who would send a baby? When the world is waiting for the Promised One… Who would send a baby?

Who would send His only begotten Son?

The Church as Community

God’s Revelation: Lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. Speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knitted together, promotes the body’s growth in building itself up in love. (adapt. from Eph. 4:1-6, 15-16)

Our Response: Sing each other’s songs. The psalmist called them new songs. The journey will be long; we will need many songs. Lift each other’s loads. Jesus called them daily crosses. Witness His journey up Golgotha; we will need others to help us. Embrace each other’s weaknesses. The Savior will count them as strength. The journey will reveal the truth. We will converse in confession and forgiveness. Share each other’s bread. The hungry will call it a miracle. We will journey within each day and consider each meal sacred. Community will see us through. In community we see Christ, our hope of salvation. Amen.

GATHERING

Let Us Sing to the Lord

294

God’s Revelation: Let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! Let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture. Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day. For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; he is to be revered above all gods. The God who made the world and everything in it does not live in shrines made by human hands, since he himself gives to all mortals life and breath and all things. (Ps. 95:1-2, 6-7; 96:1-2, 4; Acts 17:24-25)

Our Response: Brothers and sisters in Christ, what has drawn you to this place? We have come to worship the Rock of our salvation. God is not confined to this place; God is always with you. God came with you. We have come to worship with each other. How do you propose to worship so great a God? Through praise and prayer, with tears of confession and joy, we will bow at God’s feet. God owns the cattle on a thousand hills, the earth, the sea, and sky. What do you have to offer so great a God? We offer our lives and our livelihood to God, to each other, to all who seek. We bring offerings of mercy, justice, and peace. When you leave this place, God will go with you. We shall live as we worship, aware of God’s presence.

Jesus Christ Is Lord

Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels surrounding the throne and the living creatures and the elders; they numbered myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, singing with full voice, ‘Worthy is the Lamb that was slaughtered to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honour and glory and blessing!’ Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, singing, ‘To the one seated on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honour and glory and might for ever and ever!’ And the four living creatures said, ‘Amen!’ And the elders fell down and worshipped. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
