CHP Excels at International Academic Competitions!

Once again, Cedar Hill Prep’s students in grades 4 through 8 have been well represented at the Regional Finals of the International Academic Competitions. Twenty-six students from Grades 4 through 8 have become National Finalists in the Geography, History, and Science Bees. These students are qualified to advance to the National Finals of their respective Bees! Some of these students have also qualified to advance to the International Competitions of these Bees!

CHP is thrilled to announce that among these students, Regional Championships (gold, silver, and bronze) were earned in the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 8th grade categories of the Geography, History, and Science Bees.

Congratulations to all the Cedar Hill Prep students who participated in the Regional Finals! Best luck to our National Finalists as they prepare to compete in the IAC National Finals at the end of May!

Re-imagining Science: A Recycled Creations Showcase

Exploring the wonders of science through creativity and sustainability! Our preschool science fair was inspired by our Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Study and Earth Day theme. Children, alongside their parents, embarked on a mission to craft imaginative projects using recycled materials found at home. From adorable robots to intricate microscopes and vibrant volcanoes, their ingenuity knew no bounds. Each child proudly presented their creation, sharing the recycled materials used in their project. A fantastic showcase of eco-conscious learning and boundless imagination!

Spring Scavenger Hunt

Swift Farm Visits CHP

On a picturesque Spring day, the preschoolers of Cedar Hill Prep School seized the chance to embark on a Spring Scavenger Hunt across the expansive school grounds. Following a lively discussion about the defining features of the season, the children were brimming with excitement to spot them firsthand. They delighted in observing the grass transforming into vibrant green, buds unfurling on the trees, worms meandering across the earth, clusters of yellow flowers coming into bloom, and the distant symphony of birdsong filling the air. It was a joyous adventure as everyone reveled in the wonders of Spring!

Excitement buzzed through the air as the children eagerly awaited the arrival of Swift Farms Petting Zoo, who brought a delightful array of farm animals for our preschoolers to meet and pet. Karen, the friendly farmer, introduced us to baby chicks, young goats known as kids, rabbits, and sheep. With gentle guidance, she showed the children how to handle these adorable creatures, shared insights into their dietary needs and care routines, and answered their curious questions. Laughter and joy filled the air as the children interacted with, petted, and cradled the animals, creating unforgettable memories.

Growing Green: Nurturing Grass in Preschool

In our preschool class, cultivating plants from seeds is always a cherished activity. This time, our focus was on nurturing grass. The children carefully filled clamshell containers with soil, sprinkled grass seeds atop the earth, and gave them a gentle watering before placing them by the window to bask in the sunlight. With each passing day, the children excitedly observed their grass sprout and grow taller. Understanding the importance of tender loving care, they diligently ensured their plants received the essential ingredients for growth: water, sunlight, and attention.

Exploring Exercise: A Preschool Journey to Healthy Bodies

Embarking on a new educational journey, our preschoolers delved into the world of exercise. Through engaging activities, they explored the significance of physical activity for maintaining a healthy body. From energetic wiggles to spirited jumps and playful runs, the children discovered the joy of movement. Their investigations led them to identify various types of exercises, explore different exercise venues, and learn about the equipment used in fitness routines.

The highlight of the study was their enthusiastic participation in yoga sessions, showcasing their balancing prowess, and proudly demonstrating their favorite exercises.

Eco-Creations: Inspiring Sustainability at Our Preschool Science Fair

Aligned with our Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Study and Earth Day celebrations, our Preschool Science Fair showcased the creativity and eco-consciousness of our children and their families. Each participant was tasked with crafting a project using recyclable materials found at home.

The results were nothing short of impressive, with a diverse array of creations on display. From recycled robots and jellyfish to homemade bird feeders and miniature volcanoes, each project reflected the children's ingenuity and commitment to environmental stewardship. With enthusiasm, they presented their projects, detailing the materials used and sharing the stories behind their inventive designs.

Sprouting Seeds of Love

The Pre-Kindergarten class had an enriching experience celebrating Earth Day on April 22nd. Delving into the significance of cherishing and preserving our planet, our young learners participated in various activities to commemorate the occasion.

With eager hands and curious minds, they planted cucumber and Zinnia seeds, eagerly nurturing them with care and attention. Witnessing the miracle of life firsthand, they eagerly anticipate the moment when their seeds will sprout, embodying the essence of growth and renewal.

In addition to gardening, our students engaged in Earth Day crafts, channeling their creativity to express their commitment to environmental stewardship. Through thoughtful reflection, they explored ways to embody the principles of Reduce, Recycle, and Reuse, underscoring the importance of sustainability in their daily lives.

Young Innovators Shine

On April 22nd, the Pre-Kindergarten class lit up with excitement as they showcased their Science Fair Projects to parents and fellow students of CHP. Bursting with creativity, each student selected a topic aligned with classroom learning and embarked on their project journey with zeal.

The atmosphere buzzed with infectious energy as the students shared their discoveries, their passion for science radiating brightly. It was a day where curiosity knew no bounds, and the joy of exploration echoed throughout the halls of our Pre-Kindergarten class.

Exploring Animal Affection

To commemorate Pet Week, our Pre-Kindergarten class embarked on an exciting in-school field trip to the Swift Farm Petting Zoo. Amidst the charming rural backdrop, the children immersed themselves in a world of furry friends and feathered companions.

Excited squeals filled the air as the students tenderly cradled baby chicks and rabbits, marveling at their softness and delicate features. Their joy knew no bounds as they gently stroked the woolly coats of sheep and the curious noses of goats.

Beyond the thrill of interaction, this hands-on experience instilled valuable lessons about farm animals and responsible pet ownership. Through close encounters and engaging activities, our students discovered the essence of compassion and empathy towards our furry and feathered companions.

Kindergarten Marvels

Our CHP kindergarten students showcased incredible theme-based projects centered around ‘Our Earth, Our Home, and Our 5 Senses’. These Science Fair projects were thoughtfully assigned, and our Kindergarten students beamed with pride as they presented their creations during our morning meeting time. Each child eloquently shared important information about their topic, supported by simple and accurate facts. Both the kindergarten children and their teachers were captivated by these presentations. As evening fell, these projects were beautifully displayed in the classroom, drawing families and friends to witness the impressive showcase. The evening was filled with admiration as guests flooded the classrooms to experience the wonder of these amazing projects.

Seed-Sowing Adventures!

Yesterday, our first graders embarked on a delightful excursion to cultivate plants on their socks! Engaging in lively discussions about the telltale signs of spring and the fascinating journey of seeds to new destinations, they eagerly covered their shoes with socks. Venturing outdoors for a nature walk, they joyfully gathered seeds on their socks, each one a tiny promise of new life.

Back in the classroom, we carefully hung the socks by the windows, eager to witness the gradual growth of the plants in the coming weeks. As the day drew to a close, the children enthusiastically shared their most cherished moments from our nature-filled adventure.

First-grade students diligently researched their topics and crafted models or presentations. They enthusiastically shared their work with the class and fielded questions during the Science Fair.

Third Grade Mystery Reader

Third graders were treated to a special visit from Ms. Sunita Paladugu, mom to Nikita and Nikhil, who enchanted them with a captivating reading of ‘The Secret Zoo’ by Bryan Chick. The tale unravels mysteries at Clarksville City Zoo, where peculiar animal behavior sparks an adventure for Noah, Megan, Richie, and Ella. As they embark on a quest to find Megan, the group discovers the zoo holds secrets beyond imagination.

The animated reading by Ms. Paladugu left students enthralled. Thank you for sharing this magical journey with us!

Penelope: A Determined Scholar and Spirited Adventurer

Penelope is always eager to help her friends and involve herself in whole group discussions. She is an incredibly determined member of the class. With a keen interest in reading and writing. Beyond academics, she enjoys doing gymnastics and traveling with her family.

Milan: A Radiant Scholar and Resilient Athlete

Milan illuminates our classroom with her infectious passion for reading and writing. As a diligent student, she efficiently utilizes her time by eagerly tackling assignments and actively participating in class discussions. Milan’s unwavering perseverance in the face of challenges underscores her dedication to learning, setting the stage for continued achievement. Outside of academics, she finds joy in playing tennis and exploring the world of gymnastics.

Third Graders Plant Seeds of Sustainability

Third graders marked Earth Day with a hands-on celebration, diving into the world of gardening by planting vibrant marigold seeds. Amidst the fresh air and sunshine, they eagerly embraced this outdoor endeavor, their fingers dancing in the soil as they carefully nestled the seeds into the earth.

As they worked, their curiosity sparked conversations about the importance of nurturing our planet and the role each of us plays in preserving its beauty.

Wonders Unveiled: Explorations at the Science Fair

Always Question, Always Wonder” was the rallying cry for our annual science fair! As third graders geared up for the event, they grappled with how to distill their vast scientific knowledge into a single project. Some delved into the wonders of life science, while others were captivated by chemical reactions. A handful eagerly tinkered with electricity, crafting circuits, while others explored buoyancy, testing what sank and what floated. The evening buzzed with excitement as the third graders proudly showcased their projects to a captivated audience. Reflecting on the experience, one student shared, “The Science Fair was such a blast! I enjoyed assembling my board, conducting experiments, and most of all, presenting my findings to others. Creating graphs was surprisingly fun too!” Another wise student added, “If at first you don’t succeed, try the experiment again.” A sentiment worth embracing indeed!

Third Graders Thrive at NJIN Farm

On a picturesque day at NJIN Farm, CHP’s third graders eagerly embraced the outdoors with curiosity and enthusiasm. They embarked on a Nature Scavenger Hunt and engaged in team-building activities, surrounded by the tranquil beauty of nature. Immersed in experiential learning, students added their favorite scenes from the nature walk to their farm journals.

In addition to their nature exploration activities, third graders had the unique opportunity to interact with the farm’s horses, fostering a deeper connection with these majestic animals. They also enjoyed a serene moment by the beautiful pond, where they sat and listened to the soothing sounds of nature, further immersing themselves in the peaceful surroundings. These experiences allowed students to appreciate the beauty and tranquility of the natural world while learning firsthand about the importance of environmental stewardship.

Fun Day at NJIN

On Tuesday April 9th, Grade 4 took a trip to the NJIN Farm. The students enjoyed a sensory exploration of signs of winter changing into spring on the farm. That activity then continued as the students searched for fractals and played a game of Fractal Bingo.

After lunch, students enjoyed the mild sunshine as they took their journals, sat by the lake reflecting on the day’s experiences, sights, sounds, and smells. They channeled these thoughts into poems composed of rhyming couplets. Great job fourth graders!

Earth Day

Dressed in various shades of green and blue, Grade 4 commemorated Earth Day by reflecting on how our daily routines, such as composting, help to make a difference in protecting our planet.

Science Fair

Waterwheels spinning... Ferris wheels turning... cars traveling... magnets lifting... catapult launching... marbles and coins dropping... objects lifting ... pencils sharpening... drawbridge closing ... scissors cutting... engine’s pistons moving up and down... mouse trap trapping... bell banging... pulleys pulling... coin flipping... WOW! These were some of the many exciting sights and sounds at this year’s 4th Grade Science Fair! Congratulations to the Grade 4 students, all of whom excelled in designing and building their compound machines... and gave imaginative and informative presentations. It was great to see parents, grandparents, other family members, and classmates watching and participating in the demonstrations. This truly was an unforgettable event!

Singing and Dancing Competitions

Congratulations to the following 4th graders who competed in the Singing and Dancing Competition and were chosen to perform on May 3rd at our school assembly: Indigo James and Tori Rott. Both students were chosen for their singing. We look forward to hearing them perform!!!

Middle School Students Shine Bright on Poetry Day!

In a celebration of creativity and expression, our middle school students recently took center stage on Poetry Day, delivering an awe-inspiring showcase of talent that left the audience moved and inspired.

Each student poured their hearts and minds into crafting poignant poems, tackling a wide array of profound topics ranging from women’s rights and social justice to immigration, social media, child labor, man vs. nature, and racism. Their dedication and passion were evident in every carefully chosen word and evocative phrase.

The audience was captivated as these young poets fearlessly explored the complexities of the world around them, shedding light on pressing issues with insight and empathy. Some performances were so powerful that they moved listeners to tears, resonating deeply with all who had the privilege to witness them.

This Poetry Day not only showcased the immense talent of our students but also served as a reminder of the profound impact that art and expression can have on our lives. We applaud each and every student for their courage, creativity, and commitment to making their voices heard through the power of poetry.

We embarked on a captivating journey through Ancient India and China with our talented 6th graders! Through brilliant skits, complete with brochures and impressive attire, each student delved into a different aspect of the unit.

Mission to Mars

Breaking News! Grade 6 embarks on an extraordinary journey on April 18th. The team commenced with an intriguing design challenge: ensuring the safe landing of an egg from an 8 ft. drop. Initiated by the mission commanders at Beuhler Space, they were inspired by the rigorous demands faced by scientists designing rovers for Mars’ atmosphere. Following the challenge, our budding astronauts from CHP assumed control at Mission Control, piloting the simulated spacecraft and conducting experiments. With resounding success, this pioneering crew represents the generation poised to witness the historic Mars mission firsthand!

Grade 5 Delves into Glass States

Grade 5 embarked on an immersive journey into the captivating realm of glass states during their visit to Hot Sands in Asbury Park. Delving into the transformative nature of glass, students witnessed firsthand the remarkable transition from solid to liquid and back again, reaching temperatures of up to 2200 degrees Fahrenheit within seconds.

Engaged and curious, each student actively participated in crafting glass bubbles, eggs, and ornaments, while posing thoughtful questions that fueled their inquisitiveness. The hands-on experience ignited their curiosity, leaving a lasting impression on their understanding of the subject.

After the exhilarating exploration, students cooled down with a leisurely walk along Asbury Boardwalk, culminating in a delightful picnic lunch. It was a day filled with wonder, discovery, and hands-on learning, epitomizing the essence of CHP’s commitment to educational excellence.

Exploring Microclimates and Grammar Fun: A Day at NJIN Farm with Grade 5 and 6 Students

In April, Grade 5 and 6 students at CHP experienced more than just April showers - they immersed themselves in a day of exploration at NJIN Farm. Engaging in hands-on learning, they delved into Science, Social Studies, and Math through the study of microclimates. Armed with thermometers, they measured air and ground temperatures in various farm locations, documenting their findings in recycled science journals. Reflecting on their observations, they discussed patterns and differences between microclimates, pondering the causes behind these variations.

Following the microclimate study, the day continued with Grammar Bingo, where students applied farm-related vocabulary to different parts of grammar, adding an element of friendly competition to the learning experience. Additionally, two bee apiaries found new homes on the farm, enhancing pollination efforts. Overall, it was a memorable day filled with learning and fun, leaving everyone eagerly anticipating future visits to NJIN Farm.

Harmony with Nature: An Unforgettable Farm Trip

The 7th and 8th-grade farm trip was an unforgettable journey brimming with nature's wonders, moments of introspection, and bonds of friendship. The day commenced with an enchanting encounter with the farm's horses, where students marveled at these magnificent creatures. They absorbed insights into horse behavior, learned about their care, and relished the opportunity to connect with them firsthand. Following the horse encounter, students delved into journaling and reflection sessions, pondering the evolution of their relationship with the natural world throughout the year. As the day drew to a close, spirits soared during an exhilarating game of Capture the Flag by the tranquil lakeside. This spirited outdoor escapade not only encouraged teamwork and strategic thinking but also allowed students to revel in the beauty of their surroundings, infusing joy and vigor into their connection with nature.

In essence, the farm trip offered students a holistic blend of handson learning, self-discovery, and outdoor enjoyment. It etched lasting memories and instilled a profound appreciation for the marvels of the natural world in their hearts and minds.

Cedar Hill Prep School’s debate team proudly wraps up another season with a remarkable display of grit, and determination. The team’s outstanding performance in the recent tournament stands as a testament to their hard work, dedication, and exceptional abilities.

At the heart of their success is a series of impressive achievements. The Cedar Hill Prep School debate team secured the highest number of wins in the tournament, showcasing their mastery of argumentation, critical thinking, and public speaking skills. Their exceptional performance wasn’t just limited to victories; they also boasted the highest percentage of wins among all participating teams, highlighting their consistent excellence throughout the season. Furthermore, the Cedar Hill Prep School debate team clinched a spot among the top 6 teams in the tournament, solidifying their position as one of the most formidable contenders in the competitive debate circuit. This remarkable accomplishment speaks volumes about the team’s collaborative spirit, strategic prowess, and ability to perform under pressure. Individually, members of the Cedar Hill Prep School debate team distinguished themselves as top speakers, earning recognition for their eloquence, persuasion, and ability to articulate compelling arguments. Their impressive communication skills and intellectual acumen set them apart, earning admiration from both peers and judges alike.

“Participating in the debate, I learned research skills, argumentative skills, and how to address opponents. I also was able to understand the true power of mastering public speaking skills,” said 7th grader, Meghana Indupuru.

As the season comes to a close, Cedar Hill Prep School celebrates the achievements of its debate team and looks forward to the bright futures that lie ahead for these talented individuals. Their accomplishments serve as a testament to the school’s commitment to fostering excellence, critical thinking, and effective communication skills among its students.

Exploring Ecosystems: Hands-on Learning with Trout in the Classroom

The rain garden and riparian buffer zone plantings serve as hands-on learning initiatives tied to the Trout in the Classroom project and the 7th-grade life science curriculum. Students released rainbow trout they nurtured throughout the year into the Musconetcong River, ensuring a suitable habitat by testing aquatic chemistry and stream temperature.

As part of their exploration, they visited the Pequest Trout Hatchery, enriching their understanding of ecosystems and conservation efforts.

The 4th graders are delving into the world of French cuisine as they explore food and meals in their language studies. Collaborating in groups, they enthusiastically crafted menus for their imaginary café, immersing themselves in French language and culture while enjoying the creative process.

Capturing Autumn’s Dance: 7th Grade Artistry in Motion

The showcased artwork, crafted by our talented 7th graders, employed a mix of black tempera paint and liquid green and blue watercolors. Their masterpiece depicts a forest where bare trees appear to dance in the wind, while their dried leaves take flight. To capture the essence of fall, the trunks were deliberately left white, enhancing the seasonal ambiance. The skilled use of aerial and atmospheric perspective imbues the scene with depth, while rich textures and dynamic brushwork infuse the piece with movement and vitality.

CHP Spring Pep Rally: Cheers for New Leadership

CHP’s Spring Pep Rally buzzed with excitement as students united to support tennis, track/cross country, and volleyball teams. Amidst the fervor, fifth-grader Zinnia Shirley made history, becoming the cross-country team’s captain, a first for her grade. Her leadership embodies the inclusive spirit of CHP. The rally radiated with encouragement and belief in every student’s potential. With Zinnia at the helm and the whole community rallying behind, CHP teams are set for an unforgettable spring season. Let’s continue to cheer loud, support strong, and make this season one to remember.

Running Towards Success: Cedar Hill Prep’s Track Team Triumphs

Cedar Hill Prep’s Wildcat track team debuted at the Greenbrook Middle School meet on April 15, showcasing talent in the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m races. Our girls dominated the 200m, securing first and second place for CHP, and took third in the 4x100 relay.

Nico Garofalo set campus records with 14.6s (100m) and 33.8s (200m), while Valentina Garcia clocked 13.9s and 32.5s. At the Big Blue Relays hosted at Pingry on April 25, we expanded to new events, including high jump and shot put for the first time, joining sprint medley, mile, and long jump. Among 10 schools, CHP claimed first in girls’ 4x100m, third in sprint medley, and secured a default first for boys in 4x100m. Looking ahead, we anticipate continued success in track and field at Cedar Hill Prep as we foster the growth of the next generation of athletes.

CHP Volleyball Team Shows Resilience

On April 19th, the CHP Volleyball team faced a tough match against Metuchen Christian Academy, resulting in their first loss of the season. Despite their best efforts, they narrowly fell short in two closely contested games, with scores of 23-25 and 2426. The team displayed commendable skill and determination throughout the match. Looking ahead, they have three more exciting matches scheduled for May.

Spring Swing: Cedar Hill Prep Boys Tennis Team Shows Promise

The Cedar Hill Prep Boys Tennis Team has been preparing diligently since March for their Spring season. They secured a victory against Princeton Day School but faced a setback against Pingry in their following match. With promising new talent like sixth-grader Afzaal Mohamed at first singles, alongside fifth graders Vihaan Patel and Agasthya Mabbu, the team’s potential continues to blossom. Guided by our experienced eighth graders and supported by returning players from sixth and seventh grade, Coach Frankie anticipates a strong finish to the season. Go Wildcats!

House Leaders Lead Food Drive for Underprivileged Families

The House Leaders took the initiative to organize an impactful food donation drive, in partnership with a non-profit service-based organization, aimed at supporting underprivileged families in Plainfield and its neighboring communities. Their goal was ambitious: to gather 225 bags brimming with essential groceries such as canned food, pasta, cooking oil, and water bottles. Spearheading this endeavor, they galvanized the community into action, rallying support and spreading awareness about the pressing need for assistance. Through their dedication and collaborative efforts, they aimed not only to provide sustenance but also to foster a sense of solidarity and compassion within the community, ensuring that no family goes without during challenging times.

Last week’s Pizza with the Principal event was a blast! Students had the opportunity to sit down with Mr. Seeley and chat about exciting summer plans and other school-related topics.
