PRESCHOOL - KINDERGARTEN NEWS

Spring Nature Hunt

It was a beautiful spring day, and the preschool children at Cedar Hill Prep School took the opportunity to enjoy a Spring Scavenger Hunt on the sprawling grounds of their school. After discussing the characteristics of spring, the children were eager to search for them. We spotted the grass turning green, buds growing on the trees, worms slithering on the ground, yellow flowers blooming, and, in the distance, we heard the chirping of birds. Everyone had a great time searching for signs of spring!

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Study

The preschoolers began a new study called “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.” They learned that we should take care of our Earth every day, not just on Earth Day! We read about different ways to keep our Earth clean, such as planting flowers, turning off the water when brushing teeth, and putting trash in the garbage. These are just a few ways the children can help keep the Earth clean and happy. Each week, we continued our discussions and investigations about recycling, reducing, and reusing. We sorted pictures of glass, aluminum, plastic, and paper. For a craft, the children created their own recycling truck using colored paper shapes and crumpled tissue paper to represent the items in the truck.

Our Earth

Happy Earth Day! Preschoolers at Cedar Hill Prep School learned about reducing, reusing, and recycling. They also learned that we should take care of our Earth every day, not just on Earth Day! We read about different ways to keep our Earth clean, like planting flowers, turning off the water when brushing teeth, and putting trash in the garbage. These are just a few ways the children are helping to keep the Earth clean and happy. Parents were asked to bring in “garbage,” as the children called it. Using these materials, we recycled and reused them to make something that resembled a train. The children were so proud of their creation when they finished.

Easter Egg Hunt

The preschool classes participated in an Easter Egg Hunt. The children were so excited to search for as many eggs as they could find. There were blue, yellow, purple, green, and even striped eggs. Some of the eggs contained an Easter stamp. As the children searched for the eggs, they were concerned that all their friends found some eggs too.

Exploring Animal Affection

To commemorate Pet Week, our Preschool through Kindergarten classes embarked on an exciting in-school field trip to the Swift Farm Petting Zoo. Amidst the charming rural backdrop, the children immersed themselves in a world of furry friends and feathered companions. Excited squeals filled the air as the students tenderly cradled baby chicks and rabbits, marveling at their softness and delicate gestures. Their joy knew no bounds as they gently stroked the woolly coats of sheep and the curious noses of goats. Beyond the thrill of interaction, this hands-on experience instilled valuable lessons about farm animals and responsible pet ownership. Through close encounters and engaging activities, our students discovered the essence of compassion and empathy toward our furry and feathered companions.

Egg-citing Egg Hunt!

Amidst the anticipation of spring break, the PreK students at Cedar Hill Prep School kicked off their holiday with an egg-stravagant egg hunt. Dressed in colorful attire, the little ones eagerly gathered on the school playground, ready for a morning of delightful surprises. With baskets in hand and excitement in their eyes, the PreK students embarked on their egg-citing adventure. Every corner of the playground became a potential treasure trove for these enthusiastic egg hunters.

Sprouting Seeds of Love

In celebration of Earth Day on April 22nd, our Pre-Kindergarten students took part in hands-on activities that helped them connect with the importance of caring for our planet. With wide-eyed wonder and tiny green thumbs, the children planted cucumber and zinnia seeds, learning how to nurture new life and patiently await the beauty of growth. These little gardeners are excited to watch their plants bloom — a powerful lesson in care, responsibility, and renewal. Alongside planting, the students dove into Earth Day crafts, creatively expressing their love for nature. They also reflected on ways to protect the environment by practicing the three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. It was a day full of meaningful moments, setting strong roots for a lifelong commitment to sustainability.

Kindergarten Welcomes Spring with Joy and Surprises!

Our Kindergarten children had a wonderful time during the Welcoming of Spring Celebration! Each child received a basket filled with colorful grass, setting the stage for an exciting outdoor Easter Egg Hunt! With big smiles and eager hands, the children searched for hidden eggs—each one filled with delightful surprises. It was a joyful celebration and a perfect way to welcome the new season. Welcome to spring, everyone!

Adventures at the Farm: Planting, Playing, and Planning!

First grade ventured on yet another successful farm trip, filled with hands-on learning and lots of fresh air! Students gathered under our story tree to enjoy The Couch Potato, then brainstormed and wrote down fun outdoor activities for their April calendar—making sure we all stay active and curious this spring!

They also had a chance to decorate flower pots and choose their own flowers to plant, bringing a touch of spring to their windowsills. During our Earth Day–themed nature walk, students excitedly checked off items on their nature scavenger hunt list. Recess brought teamwork and goal-setting as we played “Keep It Up,” encouraging students to keep the ball in the air—and their ambitions high! Even with the chilly weather, spirits were high and the day was a blast!

Second Grade Wraps Up a Moo-velous Adventure with Adopt a Cow!

Our second-grade students recently concluded an exciting journey through the Adopt a Cow program! The grand finale featured a special virtual chat with Farmer Paige from Kurtland Farms, where the students finally got to meet our adopted calf, Milky Way!

Leading up to the visit, students worked diligently to write thoughtful questions, which were submitted to the farm in advance. During the live session, they were thrilled to see Milky Way on screen and discover fascinating facts about life on a dairy farm. Farmer Paige shared insights on how cows are cared for, what they eat, and how they grow. After the visit, students reflected on the experience and shared their favorite moments. The biggest highlight? Getting to vote for our calf, Milky Way! It was a truly memorable—and moo-velous—way to wrap up the program!

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWS

Third Graders Put Math into Action with Diner Experience!

Mrs. Kotasthane’s third graders brought math to life through their Math Menu unit. They set up a diner, took orders from fellow students, and used the menu to calculate totals—including sales tax from a provided chart. At the register, they determined the correct change and handed customers their “food” along with their change.

After the activity, students reflected on their experience, noting that calculating sales tax and making change were the biggest challenges. What a fun and engaging way to wrap up the money unit!

Mystery Reader Niralee Shares an Inspiring Story of Triumph

M. Modh’s mom, Niralee Modh was warmly welcomed by our third graders as our mystery reader. She shared an inspiring book, After the Fall (How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again), a powerful story of triumph and overcoming fears. In this clever twist on the beloved classic Humpty Dumpty, Caldecott Medalist Dan Santat tells the story of Humpty Dumpty, an avid birdwatcher who loved being high up on a city wall—until his famous fall. Now terrified of heights, Humpty struggles to do the things he once loved. Will he find the courage to face his fear? This beautifully written picture book reminds readers of all ages that life begins when you get back up. Thank you, Niralee, for sharing such an inspirational story with us!

Double the Fun: Mystery Readers Stanley & Hulya Share Two Fantastic Books!

Our third graders were treated to not one, but two mystery readers—Stanley Toulouse and Hulya Sahin, G. Toulouse’s parents! They read two delightful stories, each filled with fun and heart. First, Hulya read Chimpanzees for Tea by Jo Empson, a silly and playful twist on the game "telephone." Vincent’s trip to the grocery store quickly turns into a chaotic adventure as his memory gets mixed up, turning a simple list into a series of amusing surprises. The students couldn’t help but laugh along with this hilarious tale! Next, Stanley read Dragon for Hanukkah by Sarah Mlynowski, a heartwarming, magical story thatcelebrates Hanukkah and the power of a child’s imagination. With a playful dragon, a treasure chest, and rowdy unicorns, this fun and inventive tale shows how the true magic of Hanukkah is discovered when we least expect it. Thank you, Stanley and Hulya, for sharing these two wonderful books with us!

April Happenings in Grade 4

Science Fair

Before Spring Break, Grade 4 students were busy developing their “Big Questions” and Hypotheses for their Science Fair projects. Choosing from a list of broad topics related to their Science Curriculum, each student came up with a very thoughtful question that they were interested in researching, one that would guide their experiment. Upon our return from vacation, they developed the procedures they thought they would follow as they conducted their experiments at home. As true scientists, the students are realizing the essence of trial and error, flexibility, and creativity as they proceed with their experiments. We cannot wait for their presentations at our CHP annual Science Fair on May 14!

Middle School Poetry Day 2025: A Moving Tribute to the Human Experience

The 2025 Middle School Poetry Day theme was “Poetry: A Reflection of the Human Condition.” Our middle school students bared their souls on topics such as family, nature, sorrow, joy, adversity, intolerance, empathy, mental health, women’s rights, and the effects of war. Their poems revealed the truth about our shared human experiences—those that bind us together, and sadly, at times, those that keep us apart.

Each year, our middle school students are challenged to reach new heights, and they never fail to rise to the occasion. This year was no exception. In addition to their powerful poems, students incorporated skits, props, beautiful artwork, and banners to further enhance their presentations. The growth they demonstrated in preparation for this day has been truly remarkable. We are so proud of all their hard work and creativity!

Every student on stage and behind the scenes poured their entire heart into this production, and it showed. The show was grounded in deep respect for the Polynesian culture from which it draws its roots. News from the Nurse

Hello CHP Families!

Spring has officially sprung—and so have the sneezes, scraped knees, and sunburns! As we head into this beautiful season of growth and sunshine, here are a few friendly reminders from your favorite school nurse to help keep our kiddos happy and healthy:

Allergy Alert!

Pollen is in the air—and so are the sniffles! If your child has seasonal allergies, please make sure we have updated medication on file. Tissues and water bottles are their best buds this time of year!

Sunscreen = Superpower

Those UV rays don’t mess around! Please apply sunscreen at home before school—it's the best way to keep your child protected throughout the day. Hats and sunglasses? Bonus style points and sun safety!

If You're Sick, Rest is Best

Spring bugs still like to make the rounds. If your child has a fever, upset tummy, or any “uh-oh” symptoms, let them rest at home and return only when they’re feeling 100% superhero again.

Outdoor Play = Boo-Boo Season

More time outside means more scraped knees and elbows! We’ve got plenty of Band-Aids, hugs, and ice packs, but please remind your child to wear proper shoes and play safely.

Let’s all bloom into the best version of ourselves this spring—healthy, hydrated, and ready for fun!

With care and sunshine, Nurse Loretta CHP Health Office

Academic Leaders Gather at the Harvard Club to Discuss the Future of Education

This month, Cedar Hill Prep participated in the Academic Leaders Group meeting at the prestigious Harvard Club. The gathering brought together educators and administrators committed to shaping the future of academic excellence. Discussions centered around aligning school missions with studentcentered outcomes, emphasizing the importance of nurturing deeper, more transferable learning experiences. One of the key challenges addressed was the growing pressure from the educational market to prioritize quick results, such as test scores and grades, over meaningful, long-term learning. The meeting reinforced a shared commitment to transformative education that goes beyond the surface and empowers students to think critically, solve real-world problems, and become lifelong learners.
