HEADING INTO SPRING 2025

A NOTE FROM THE EXECUTIVE TEAM

As we approach the arrival of spring, our students are full of energy and anticipation for what is to come. And honestly, after what 2025 has already already shown us, who can blame them?

2025 started with a bang! We kicked off the year with our annual Sneak-a-Peek into Kindergarten event, hosted various elementary project-based learning presentations, celebrated the Year of the Snake for Chinese New Year, and even braved an unexpected snowstorm that gave us a good laugh and reminded us how unpredictable life can be!

Along the way, we hit the milestone of 100 days of school, shared plenty of love and laughter on Valentine’s Day, and participated in so many activities that left us all smiling Our students' hilarious sense of humor and knack for turning everyday moments into unforgettable memories have made the journey even more enjoyable whether it’s their impromptu dance moves out on the playground or their playful jokes.

It’s been a whirlwind of learning, fun, and unexpected surprises, and we are excited for what’s to come as the season continues to unfold. Spring is always a time for growth and new beginnings, and we are ready to embrace every moment of it especially the joyful, funny moments that our students bring with them every step of the way!

The Power of Perseverance: Teaching Resilience at School

Life is full of twists and turns, and challenges are part of the ride! At Cedar Crest Academy, we want to empower students to embrace these challenges and develop perseverance one of our Ten Pillars of Character Education. Teaching kids how to persevere is key to helping them grow, solve problems, and thrive socially, emotionally, and academically, setting them up for long-term success.

For children, it’s all about working hard, staying focused, and refusing to give up even when things get tough. At school, we promote creativity in lesson planning to nurture perseverance. Activities like art projects, sports, games, puzzles, and brain teasers all require persistence and problem-solving skills. Two of our guiding mottos, “Don’t Give Up” and “Just Keep Trying,” inspire students to develop resilience and embrace a growth mindset.

But the journey doesn’t end at school We believe that fostering perseverance is a partnership between school and home. In our Preschool program, we provide a "School to Home Connection" page to help parents stay in sync with what we ’ re teaching in the classroom. This resource offers simple tips for talking about perseverance at home, just like we do at school It also provides ideas for parents to model perseverance through their own actions and words, along with suggestions for practicing the trait together as a family.

At Cedar Crest, we view teaching perseverance as an investment in our students' lifelong success While every child is unique, developing perseverance at a young age prepares them for academic and social challenges and builds resilience all skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.

Empowering Voices: Celebrating Black History

In February, our teachers and families came together to celebrate and educate our students about the important history and contributions of Black Americans during Black History Month The Northup Parent Association members, who helped coordinate the curriculum enhancements, organized a special event inviting parents and caregivers to be a part of honoring this meaningful month. Families were encouraged to read books featuring Black representation, sparking meaningful conversations about culture, identity, and diversity

These books not only highlight the achievements and stories of African Americans but also foster understanding, empathy, and pride. Through these narratives, we hope to inspire our students and broaden their perspectives on the rich diversity of our world.

In our classrooms, teachers led lessons and activities that celebrated the remarkable contributions of influential Black leaders like George Crum, the brilliant inventor of the potato chip; Garrett Morgan, who invented the stoplight; and Alma Thomas, whose vibrant artwork continues to inspire This initiative turned the month into a celebration of learning and inspiration, and we are so proud of the engagement from both students and families!

Bridging Books & Bytes: Library & Technology at Bellewood

“It’s lots of fun,” is how a first-grade student describes the school’s library. With vibrant posters showcasing beloved storybook characters and a giant teddy bear students love to hug, the library is more than just a place for books. It offers an exciting collection of nonfiction and fiction titles, and beyond the neatly organized shelves, you'll find a 3D printer, desktops, computer carts, and coding games. Welcome to the library at the Bellewood campus, where literature and technology come together to enhance students' learning experiences.

Divya Nair, the Library Specialist & Technology teacher, plans monthly themes for instruction that complement grade-level focuses and seamlessly incorporate technology. For instance, students recently explored the impact of Artificial Intelligence on the world. Through Hour of Code, they brainstormed creative ways AI could be used to clean oceans by removing trash. Meanwhile, fourth graders designed Mars rovers using Lego Mindstorm as part of their space exploration unit. With lessons like these, it’s no wonder students are captivated by the magic that unfolds in the library!

Divya’s passion for learning began in childhood, inspired by her father, who led one of South Asia's largest thermal power plants She was fascinated by how boilers, control systems, and power grids could turn coal into electricity for millions. As she grew older, she saw how IT evolved, realizing that software and virtualization could simplify and revolutionize complex systems. The idea that a few lines of code could make systems smarter and more efficient drew her into the world of technology and application development.

We’re grateful for Ms. Divya and the books, tools, and knowledge she provides to foster student growth. With National School Librarian Day approaching on April 4th, let’s take a moment to appreciate all librarians like Ms Divya, who make learning fun and impactful!

How Spirit Days Strengthen School Community

Spirit Days are more than just a time for students and staff to get silly and have fun! These days take school spirit, community, and team connection to a whole new level.

Spirit Days were first introduced around the early to mid-1900s, evolving from school traditions tied to homecoming celebrations and sports events. These dedicated days came about organically to create unity and foster a shared sense of community and identity. The goal was to build school pride, get students and staff engaged, and boost a fun and positive school culture

This tradition has only flourished since its inception. At Cedar Crest Academy, we dedicate one day each month to a Spirit Day, each with a different theme. Whether it’s Twin Day, Backwards Day, or Dress As Your Favorite Character Day, there’s always something fun and new to look forward to! We also host two week-long celebrations around the winter holidays and for Read Across America, dedicating each day to a different theme. These celebrations are meant to get students and staff excited and involved in a shared experience that strengthens our community spirit

So, the next time you see an email communication or flyer promoting an upcoming Spirit Day, we encourage you to mark your calendar and carve out some time to plan and get creative with your child! There is an amazing spark of excitement and shared pride that our students and staff experience when everyone in their class is committed to a Spirit Day! It’s even better when they see friends in different classes dressed up as well.

Next time you see more than five Elsas running around the playground, don’t worry – you are not hallucinating and you definitely do not need more coffee We guarantee it’s a Spirit Day! Either way, those five kids are living their best lives, building ice castles and belting "Let It Go" at the top of their lungs.

Ready, Set, Kindergarten: Helping Your Child Transition with Confidence

Kindergarten is just around the corner! Whether your child is moving up from Pre-K at Cedar Crest Academy or joining us for the first time, this is an exciting milestone. With a little preparation, you can help make the transition smooth and fun.

Start by checking in on your child’s academic progress Review their progress report goals, stay in touch with teachers, and if you are new, ask the Director for a Kindergarten Readiness document to see which skills to focus on.

Beyond academics, independence is key! Kindergarteners are expected to manage their belongings, supplies, and routines. While it’s tempting to jump in and help, encouraging your child to hang their own coat, carry their backpack, and keep track of homework builds confidence and responsibility.

Fine motor skills also play a crucial role in Kindergarten. Strengthen little hands with fun activities like Lego building, playdough, lacing, and cutting to prepare them for plenty of writing. Start a summer journal to practice creative writing, sentence structure, and spelling!

Finally, set the stage for success by ensuring your child arrives on time and ready to learn. School starts at 9 AM sharp, and consistent attendance helps them thrive.

With your support, your child will step into Kindergarten feeling confident and excited for this next big adventure.

NOW IS THE TIME: PARENT VOLUNTEER HOURS!

Now’s the perfect time to start working on your 10 parent volunteer hours before the deadline on Friday, June 6, 2025! We would love for you to avoid the volunteer fee (who wants that?) and, let’s be honest, the students love seeing their parents around school. Whether you are helping out in the classroom or at events, your time makes school even more awesome for everyone!
