SLIPS, TRIPS AND FALLS

According to information available from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, slips, trips, and falls cause 15 percent of all accidental fatalities and are a major cause of lost-time accidents.

By taking several simple precautions and being aware of their work area(s), employees can control and/or reduce exposure to hazardous conditions that may cause workplace injuries. California Code of Regulations Title 8, Section 3203 requires employees be informed and trained about workplace hazards in order to reduce the potential for slip, trip, and fall injuries.

COMMON CAUSES OF WORKPLACE SLIPS, TRIPS & FALLS

• Slippery walking surfaces due to the presence of water, oil, animal waste, loose carpet, broken tile, loose gravel, or other slick materials and liquids.

• Uneven walking surfaces in outdoor areas such as fields or broken sidewalk pavement.

• Obstructed offices, work areas, hallways, aisles, or outdoor pathways due to obstacles such as extension cords, tools, chairs, open file drawers, brush, and tree limbs/roots.

• Improper ladder use, standing on furniture, and unsafe traverses of steps and stairs.

• Jumping off equipment, from one level to another, or across ditches.

3 SAFETY UPDATE:

SLIP, TRIP & FALL PRECAUTIONS

• Always promptly clean up spills and place warning signs for wet or slippery walking surfaces.

• Walk at speeds that the surface conditions permit.

• When possible, detour around wet or slippery walking surfaces.

• Practice good housekeeping by keeping offices, work areas, hallways, aisles, and outdoor pathways free of obstacles and clutter. Always close file drawers after use.

• Never stand on furniture to reach for elevated objects. Always use a ladder or step stool.

• Repair loose or damaged carpeting, floor tile, and sidewalk pavement.

• Cover extension cords when they temporarily cross walkways.

• When dismounting equipment, use manufacturer-installed handrails and ladder rungs.

• Never jump across ditches or from one level to another (i.e., from a loading dock to the ground).

• Wear appropriate slip-resistant footwear for the type of task to be performed.

• Be alert of your surrounding when climbing or descending steps or stairs. Use handrails where present.

• Always provide adequate lighting in work areas, including all walkways.

JANNINE KRAUS

RAILROAD ADMINISTRATOR

Hey CDL! I was born and raised in New Jersey and now live in Missouri with my loyal dog. I’ve lived in California, Texas, Massachusetts and Kentucky . I have three successful daughters and one grandson who I love to see in my free time.

I was led to CDL by an appealing ad on indeed. I started with Joplin Plumbing, HVAC, & Electric Service then recently moved into a great opportunity with Railroad Division. I have been with CDL for 2 years so far; however it feels like I have been here forever, in a good way.

Our Railroad Division has great leadership and a team-work atmosphere, as well as pride in our division. I truly enjoy that every day offers a new challenge, opportunity to learn, and ability to contribute to the success of our division and company. I look forward to coming to work. The hardest part for me would be getting out of work-mode, I have a piece of my brain in work-mode outside of the office and on the weekends, but this can be attributed to being part of a team. I want our crews to always feel supported; its hard to fully reach weekend-mode when some of my team is out on the weekends working and I’m at the winery relaxing. I have gained a great amount of knowledge working for CDL. I was amazed to learn how widespread our Railroad customer base is and continues to grow. The process from capturing a customer’s interest, submitting a proposal, receiving a customer PO, and all the in-between logistics to the completion of a project was eye-opening to me. As well as learning that several CDL companies have a hand in it all. I have witnessed how devoted CDL RR construction & maintenance crews are

I think our company projects a team driven atmosphere. Each division seems to have pride in their work, as they should. CDL is diverse, from its employees to its group of companies.

Outside of work, I spend time with my family, friends, and long walks and hikes with my dog. I am beginning to get out more and discover what the Four States area has to offer.

“ENJOY
THE
RIDE WHILE SEIZING THE MOMENTS & TREASURE THE MEMORIES.”

Jannine goes above and beyond to ensure everyone and everything is taken care of. There are very few people I can give a complicated task to and depend on them to take care of it, without worrying or checking back in on it. She gets a ton of work piled on her every day, but she is always smiling and asking for more. I couldn’t ask for a more perfect contributor to our team, she’s the glue that holds the office together. I can’t say thank you enough for the job she does, day in and day out.

HVAC PROJECT HIGHLIGHT: GIRARD HIGH SCHOOL

CDL Group of Companies hires skilled and dedicated workers to represent our growing company. HVAC is one of many departments where skilled craftsmanship is required. Our HVAC team handles anywhere from 10-15 large jobs a year. One that has stayed continuous is changing out Lennox heating and cooling units in Girard high school, this being the largest and longest job done for a school district.

Starting the summer of 2018, in order to earn this project, CDL had to out-bid other companies every year before being allowed to start. CDL’s HVAC department has won bids and replaced units for the past 4 summers for a total of about 12 months. Along with the demolition of old units, and installation of new heating and cooling units, they replaced everything along with it including the duct work, piping, nuts, bolts, etc. Everything is precisely measured to size before the final install. Since CDL is an all-in-one company, all ductwork is fabricated in house, making it a quicker and cheaper install for Girard High.

This specific job takes about the entire summer to ensure precise and accurate installation of each of the 20 units and additional pieces. It is a tedious process before even getting to the final install, starting with the call of opportunity from Girard. Next an estimation is given. If estimation gets approved, they measure and (if needed) would build new

duct works for each Lennox heating and cooling units. A final price is given and thats when the fun stuff starts. The old stuff goes out and brand new units are installed. They did exactly that process for Girard High for 4 summers in a row.

Being a Lennox dealer, we put our utmost trust in the company to provide the best product possible, the same way we do with our clients.

These heating and cooling units were installed by skilled team of about 6 skilled technicians ranging from apprentice technicians to master HVAC technicians. It takes many years to be able to understand everything there is about the HVAC processes and units. However, there will always be something new to learn with CDL as we strive to help our technicians grow to the best of everyone’s ability.
