The mission of Creative Destruction Lab is to accelerate the commercialization of science and technology for the betterment of humankind. We do this by delivering an objectives-based mentorship program for massively scalable, seed-stage, science- and technology-based companies.
Creative Destruction Lab - Rockies (CDL-Rockies) is housed within the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary. CDL-Rockies operates three programs: CDL, Nurture and Haskayne ScaleUp. Each program is designed to support and accelerate the commercialization of science- and technology-based companies at critical growth stages, locally and globally.
The CDL program is a nine-month objectives-based mentorship program for science- and technology-based ventures looking to accelerate their path to commercialization. With guidance from experienced entrepreneurs, industry leaders, and renowned scientists, founders learn to separate the signal from the noise and prioritize actions that will positively impact their company's trajectory.
Since its inception in 2017, more than 380 ventures have participated in CDL-Rockies with 127 of these ventures successfully completing the program. CDL-Rockies' alumni companies have raised over $2.3 billion in capital, created over 2,100 jobs and generated $6.7 billion in cumulative enterprise value.
We are a part of something massive!
Nurture helps commercialization-curious researchers and very early-stage science and technology founders identify and fill foundational business elements required to progress their innovations toward commercialization. This is done through networking opportunities, coaching, mentorship and workshops with industry experts.
Nurture began in 2021, and has supported more than 240 ventures to date.
The Haskayne ScaleUp program is designed to fortify business foundations to withstand the pressures of growth at scale. It pairs executive teams with mentors to work through curated content delivered by renowned facilitators. Its 12-week cadence enables optimal learning and effective time management.
ScaleUp began in 2022 and has supported 16 companies from Alberta, Saskatchewan and BC.

At CDL-Rockies, our mission is to support early-stage technical founders in accelerating their commercial potential through mentorship. As we’ve grown, we’ve expanded this mission to ensure we support these founders at critical inflection points along their journey.
This year was a prime example of this mission in action and a testament to the calibre of those who make up the CDL-Rockies community: mentors, partners, ventures, alumni, MBA students, moderators, our team, and other community members. Together, we continue to impact the advancement of innovations solving critical industry challenges.
I am delighted to share some of this year’s highlights with you:
● Our CDL program alumni have now surpassed $6.7 billion in equity value created. They’ve raised more than $2.3 billion in capital and created over 2,100 jobs.
● We ran a second successful ScaleUp cohort, empowering eight executive teams to think differently and enable growth and scale.
● Through Nurture, we held workshops and coached nearly 60 very early-stage ventures to better prepare them for the next stage of commercializing their innovation.
● Nearly 140 mentors shared their expertise, insights and time with program participants across our offerings, resulting in over 1500 combined mentorship hours.
● More than 50 MBA students from the Haskayne School of Business and the Alberta School of Business participated in the CDL Course, gaining first-hand experience in entrepreneurship while supporting CDL ventures with their business needs.
Looking ahead, our focus remains the same: to empower the most promising early-stage ventures in deep science and technology by giving them the

mentorship, tools and resources they need to thrive.
We will continue to offer the level and quality of programming that CDL-Rockies is known for while focusing on continued operational efficiency and creating long-term sustainable impact.
I want to express my deepest gratitude to each and every member of our CDL-Rockies community. Whether you're a mentor, partner, alumni, or supporter, your commitment and steadfast support have been instrumental in our journey thus far. We look forward to continuing to collaborate, innovate and have an impact alongside you.
The 2023/24 cohort year welcomed many new faces to the community, including Dr. Gina Grandy, dean of the Haskayne School of Business.
We’ve been fortunate to have Gina’s support over the past year. She’s met many members of our community, attended sessions and shared valuable insights and ideas as a member of our advisory board.
As she approaches her one-year anniversary at Haskayne, we asked her to share some of her thoughts on CDL-Rockies and its connection to the school.
CDL-Rockies: For those in our community who have not yet had the chance to meet you, please tell us a little about yourself.
GG: I come to Haskayne with diverse experience in university settings – the University of Calgary is the eighth university to employ me! Prior to coming to Haskayne, I spent 10 years at the University of Regina, including five years as dean of the Hill and Levene Schools of Business. I’ve also worked in universities in the UK and Ukraine.
entrepreneurs.
I love to learn and live vicariously through the energy of students. I also know that access to higher education changes lives, and to play a small role in this is a gift I don’t take for granted.
CDL-R: You mentioned that you were dean of the Hill and Levene Schools of Business. What excited you about the opportunity to come to Calgary and lead Haskayne?
GG: There are many reasons! Haskayne and the University of Calgary have a strong reputation nationally. There is also a vibrancy in Calgary that drew me in. Both the city and the university have an entrepreneurial spirit that speaks to my values. I was also impressed by the strength of the relationships between Haskayne, the University and the external community, particularly through programs like CDL-Rockies. This synergistic relationship makes it much easier to develop and expand relevant programming to best serve the communities that surround us. I observed all of the amazing things happening here and really, why wouldn’t I want to be part of that?
Are there any initiatives you’re bringing to Haskayne that build on what the school already
This year has been one of learning everything I can about the Haskayne community. I have been asking a lot of questions, observing and listening. We are in the process of developing a new strategic plan and that will set the foundation for a number of exciting initiatives that build on the great work we are already doing at Haskayne. I will highlight three areas where we have made investments this year.
I am particularly pleased to share that with the support of our generous community partners we have created a number of new awards for
[CDL-Rockies] is an example of how business and business schools can collaborate to achieve significant economic and social impact. That's exciting, isn't it?
students this year that will support work-integrated learning through internships, as well as awards for specific student groups such as Indigenous and female students. We even have some new awards that are directed to specific sectors, including real estate.
We have also begun an exploratory relationship with other global energy cities. UCalgary is part of a tri-party agreement with the University of Aberdeen (Scotland) and Curtin University (Australia). Several researchers from Haskayne participated in a conference in Aberdeen in May and part of that involved connecting with industry. It was fascinating to learn of the similarities and differences across Perth, Aberdeen and Calgary. We will see where that might take us next year.
In June we launched the Haskayne Business Exchange. As the name implies, the goal is to offer an engaging forum to exchange ideas between our researchers and industry. This is a space and place where UCalgary researchers share how their work is relevant to practice, and industry engages in a way that will provoke new research questions. We will expand on this concept in the coming year. The CDL-Rockies’ community is going to want to be part of this!
It’s a privilege to step into this role. Fundamentally, rather than change who we are, we are working to find more ways to proudly showcase our strengths.
CDL-R: You’ve experienced a full cohort year of CDL-Rockies. What stood out to you the most about the program?
GG: I was struck immediately by the remarkable community support and spirit, as well as the energy in the room. It’s incredible that CDL-Rockies can bring the group of people it does into the same room. It speaks to the support from the business community of CDL-Rockies and Haskayne, as well as the quality of the programming that CDL-Rockies has developed.
CDL-R: What about the partnership between CDL-Rockies and Haskayne are you most excited about?
GG: There is so much to be excited about! CDL-Rockies exemplifies how business schools can facilitate economic growth in partnership with the business community. It is an example of how business and business schools can collaborate to achieve significant economic and social impact. That's exciting, isn't it?
CDL-R: Do you have any final thoughts you’d like to share with our community?
GG: CDL-Rockies is a winning formula, made possible by the community’s support, belief and faith in the program, Haskayne and the University of Calgary. So a huge thank you to the entire CDL-Rockies community – the mentors, the partners, the investors – everyone involved.
We are grateful for Gina’s involvement in CDL-Rockies and our community, and look forward to what’s in store as she continues to lead Haskayne.

Bringing together the right group of people to turn an idea into reality isn’t something that happens often. But for Pablo Sobron and Ariel Torre, co-founders of Impossible Sensing Energy (IS Energy), that’s what happened during their time in CDL-Rockies.
Sobron, who founded Impossible Sensing, the parent company of IS Energy, first experienced CDL in 2019, when he joined the Energy stream. His technology, which features proprietary remote sensing capabilities, had already been used in space by NASA to detect signs of life.
“I started thinking, if the goal on Mars is to measure life-building hydrocarbons precisely, and this technology brings the lab to the field on Mars, why can't it do the same on Earth across industries?” he says.
CDL mentors agreed the technology had

“My understanding is when [Pablo] was in CDL-Rockies, he was told ‘You are a man with solutions, but no problem to solve, so you need to find someone in the energy sector to help you with that.’ I guess that someone was me,” Torre says.
Together, the duo began working towards finishing what Sobron started in the program. In 2023, led by Torre, IS Energy was accepted into the CDL-Rockies Energy stream.
For the co-founders, CDL has been an invaluable contributor to their success.
“[CDL] is extremely valuable because you receive feedback from a group of people that has either done it before or will be buying your product, or both,” Torre says.
“It's a no-brainer,” Sobron says. “You're going to be in a room full of mentors who are ready to support you through your challenges. And this room will give you more help than you could ever hire.” Ariel
Torre, Co-Founder & CEO, IS Energy.

CDL is a highly sought-after business mentorship program for deep science- and technology-based ventures.
On average, 40-50% of ventures admitted into the program will graduate from CDL. This is an important part of the program design.
Ventures that graduated from the program did so having accomplished aggressive, accelerated business and technical milestones increasing their commercial potential and probability of success.
CDL-Rockies Nurture was created to address a gap that pre-CDL ventures face. These ventures require support in assessing areas of weakness within their team, product, market and legal/regulatory needs. Nurture provides resources and programming – including coaching, workshops and mentorship – to support these very early-stage science and technology founders in making meaningful progress in commercializing their innovations.
Since we launched Nurture in 2021, nearly 240 ventures have joined, with 36 being accepted into a CDL cohort. 78 percent of these participants are Canadian, with 56 percent based in Alberta.
This year, 22 Nurture participants who applied to CDL programs were accepted. 20 of those entered one of the three streams at CDL-Rockies.
The Haskayne ScaleUp program was created to address the unique challenges associated with scaling a high-growth company. Whether scaling for the first time or a seasoned veteran bringing along a relatively new team, these leaders are used to the day-to-day business execution and rarely have the space or time to test their critical assumptions and work “on” the business.
ScaleUp is designed to fortify business foundations to withstand the pressures of growth at scale. The program supports high-growth companies needing to scale their revenue, capital and/or team to expand into global markets. It does this by pairing executive teams with experienced mentors to work through curated content delivered by renowned facilitators. Its 12-week cadence enables optimal learning and effective time management.
Each company will exit the program having reviewed its growth strategies and a plan to achieve organizational capacity. The program experience will empower leaders to challenge their assumptions, engage in frank and constructive conversations, and enhance their personal accountability toward the team and business.
Since it began in 2022, ScaleUp has supported 16 companies over two cohort years.

Two CDL course graduates share their experience in the CDL course and how it helped them with their careers
Jun Yang (Jamie) Liu and Prateek Sodhi, both graduates of MBA programs in Alberta, agree that the CDL course provided them with invaluable experience they would not have received elsewhere.
The CDL course runs in partnership with CDL-Rockies and is available to graduate students at both the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business and the University of Alberta’s Alberta School of Business. As part of the course, MBA and Executive MBA students are paired with early-stage science- and technology-based startups.
Sodhi worked with two different ventures during the course and found it to be a reciprocal relationship. He supported them with various business needs, and in return, he was able to be part of a founder’s journey towards scaling.
In early 2023, Sodhi, who was inspired in part by his CDL experience, launched his own company called Finofo. Since launching, Finofo has raised $1.25 million in pre-seed funding and received backing from major financial organizations, including Desjardins.
After working in sales and business development, Lui decided to pivot his career. This decision led him to Haskayne, where he soon learned about

the CDL course.
Liu was paired with Cashew, who graduated from the 2023/24 Prime stream. Liu built a strong rapport with Cashew’s co-founders, and after experiencing their progress first-hand, he decided to invest in the company.
After getting a taste of supporting a venture –both with his skills and financially – Liu is ready to help many more ventures in the future.
When asked to share advice to students who are thinking about enrolling in the CDL course, both are on the same page.
“This is the kind of experience that you would not be able to replicate in a classroom," Sohdi says.
“It's definitely an opportunity you don't want to miss,” Liu says. ReadthefullstoryonLinkedIn.
