KIDZONE OPEN FOR TOURS New Play Exhibit, "Sierra Settlers" Families can again experience the amazing new “play” exhibit Sierra Settlers at the KidZone Children’s Museum in Truckee. KidZone Museum, a local nonprofit children’s museum, reopens for members on Wednesday, September 22, 2021. The current imaginative play exhibit celebrates the 100th anniversary of the transcontinental railroad, a pivotal event in Truckee’s history. A volunteer group of craftsmen, artists, and educators come together yearly to create an imaginative play space for children up to 7 years old that is engaging and fun for adults too. For new parents with exploring infants, three is much to do in the protected baby crawler area. The outside play will also open on the September 22.

Play is Essential To Child Development

You may already be familiar with the importance of play in healthy child development.  Between birth and 5 years old, 80% of a human brain is developed. This statistic speaks to how important early experiences in the form of unstructured play is to a child’s brain development, physical development, and cognitive development. Imaginative play is the basis for creative thinking and problem solving. The freedom to invent games and situations allow children to learn vital social skills that help them be successful in a school setting and in life. Exploring their modality through activity, develops large motor skills while the many smaller tasks available challenge their small motor

skills. Allowing play situations to freely develop give children the opportunity to experiment with success and failure, which supports their emotional development and makes them resilient to the changing world.    There is so much science behind early child development and what it takes to raise healthy children. The families of Truckee are fortunate to have the KidZone Children’s Museum as a community asset.

The Future Is Bright

The dedicated group of volunteers and staff have been working diligently over the last decade to expand this small facility so that no child is ever turned away due to capacity or income. We are proud to announce that the TDRPD has gifted the museum land within Regional Park to build
