Tennis & Pickleball

WELCOME LETTER FROM BASIA PHILLIPS

Welcome back to another season of fun and competition at the Incline Village Tennis & Pickleball Center, as we continue to expand our programs to accommodate the traditional and the new; the serious and carefree; and the gregarious and reclusive among us.

It is summer - the time of year we can finally use tennis balls for their actual intended use (perhaps at the expense of our playful dogs, our therapy for foot ailments, and sliders for recuperating skiers’ walkers). Here at the Tennis & Pickleball Center, we’re ready to help anyone get back into shape with drop-in play opportunities as well as with clinics directed by our professional staff.

We’ve made some big improvements to the facility over the past year, including some nice outdoor furniture on our new deck so we may mingle and get reacquainted. If you haven’t been by the Tennis & Pickleball Center in a while, please come check out what’s new!

We are happy to welcome back many of our staff from last year, and also thrilled to introduce a new teaching pro to our staff, Sylvain Malroux, who will teach both tennis and pickleball clinics. Our intentions are to go beyond tennis and pickleball to create

an atmosphere that promotes friendly competition, novice players, junior leagues, ongoing education, social mixers, and simply an environment for locals and newcomers to meet old friends and make new ones.

So I hope you’ll stop by to say hello and register for any programs or clinics that will get you out on the courts this summer.

See you soon, BasiaPhillips

Basia Phillips, Tennis & Pickleball Center Supervisor

Welcome Sylvain Malroux

New this summer is Teaching Pro Sylvain Malroux, who brings expertise in both tennis and pickleball to the staff of the Incline Village Tennis & Pickleball Center.

Sylvain recently wrapped up his seventh season as Head Coach for the UNR men’s tennis program, winning Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year honors while guiding the team to its first Mountain West title and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever. Under Malroux's guidance, the men’s team had four players earn All-Mountain West honors in 2022.

Prior to coaching the men’s team, Sylvain was the Nevada women’s tennis head coach from 2006-11, after which he spent time coaching the San José State Spartan’s women’s team from 2011-15 (taking them to the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever as well), before returning to coach the Wolf Pack men’s tennis team in 2015. Sylvain began his coaching career in the U.S. as an assistant coach at Clemson University (which made two Final Four appearances), and was named the ITA Division I Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2004. He has also been coaching tennis in the French federation, running many different academies and tennis clubs in France and the U.S.

On the pickleball side, Sylvain has taught pickleball lessons for years, has guided pickleball-themed travel excursions to France, competes at the 5/5.5 level, and is finishing his Level 2 certification from the International Pickleball Teaching Professional Association (IPTPA).

Malroux now lives in Reno, but is originally from Aurillac, France, and he and his wife Adrienne have two sons, Lohan and Milo.

TENNIS & PICKLEBALL PICKLEBALL UPDATES

By Beverly Keil

Pickleball may very well be the fastest growing sport in Incline Village. Our 12 pickleball courts attract locals and visitors, many of whom play every day. If you haven’t tried pickleball yet, you are missing out on the fun, exercise and socialization the sport offers. It doesn’t take much to get started - we have paddles you can borrow, and “Introduction to Pickleball” lessons are available.

Pickleball is for everyone: male or female, young or older, competitive or casual athletes. Enjoy the quick pace and learn the playing strategies that make the game addictive.

Mornings at the Incline Pickleball Center are for adult drop-in play – 9am to 12pm daily. Come by yourself or with a friend and rotate into different games with other players. No reservations needed. Attending dropin play is like going to the “Cheers” bar where everyone knows your name. But instead of serving drinks, we offer dinks. (A dink is a pickleball shot that lands just over the net in the opponent’s court.) Afternoons are wide open for practicing drills or playing with family and friends. Bring a foursome and enjoy playing at your own pace. Skills clinics and private coaching are offered, as well as children’s programs. Details are available at the Pro Shop.

Contact 775.832.1235 for more information about lessons and clinics. To receive periodic news about Incline Pickleball schedules and special events, sign up for our email news blasts by sending an email to inclinepickleball@gmail.com.
