MARINERS HAVE THE WOOD

OVER MELBOURNE CITY

This season has proven no different, with both clashes ending in memorable results for the Central Coast. Their first meeting saw Phil Moss’ men complete a memorable come-from-behind draw in the dying embers of their round six clash in Melbourne.

If the Mariners could have handpicked their next opponent - considering the stage of the season, where they sit on the table, and their playing history - they couldn’t do much better than Melbourne City. Since the club's inception the rebranded Melbourne City has struggled to break down our Central Coast Mariners. A 1-0 defeat as Melbourne Heart, courtesy of Alex Wilkinson in their first ever Hyundai A-League fixture in 2010 laid the foundation for eight further losses, four draws and a lone win against the men in yellow through a dour 1-0 victory in February 2012. You would stop short of calling it domination, but it’s about as close as it comes in terms of Hyundai A-League match ups.

The Mariners found themselves two behind after Mate Dugandzic and Eric Paartalu struck either side of the interval at AAMI Park, Glen Trifiro struck a perfect freekick past Andrew Redmayne to breathe life into the side with 10 minutes remaining. Then, with almost the last kick of the game, club captain John Hutchinson drove home from all of 30 yards with a low, piercing strike to grab a share of the spoils, sparking delirium amongst the players and coaching staff. Most recently, in their first match of the New Year and their last before the Asian Cup, a first-half double from departed striker Mitchell Duke saw the Mariners once again reach triumph against Melbourne City. - by Patrick Boddan

PLAYER TO PRAISE: #26 FABIO FERREIRA A genuine match-winner on his day, and capable of finding Ferreira file the back of the net as well as putting the ball on a plate for his striking partners, Fabio Ferreira has already established Position Winger himself as one of the most important players in the Central Date of Birth 3 May 1989 (25) Coast Mariners front third. Place of Birth Barreiro, Portugal In what may prove to be the Mariners most effective acquisition Height 178cm in recent memory, the Portuguese winger linked up with Phil Weight 72kg Moss’ men after a largely successful stint under Josep Gombau Former Clubs Adelaide United, Sertanense F.C. (Portugal), Chelsea FC Youth (England), at Adelaide United, where he bagged 13 goals at a rate better Sporting Clube de Portugal Youth (Portugal) than once every five games. A product of the Chelsea and Sporting Lisbon youth systems, Ferreira plays a direct brand of football that sees him often break into space and charge down the touchline rather than pass his way into the box. Possessing incredible power, the 25-year out-muscles the opposition when the play is slowed down, and would trouble Usain Bolt in a 50-metre sprint. Ferreira slipped seamlessly into the yellow and navy starting XI, and is developing a healthy partnership with right back Storm Roux. The right touchline has been the focal point of the Mariners most potent attacking opportunities in recent weeks, with the pair creating numerous chances and causing havoc for opposition defences. Having already bagged a double against Sydney FC and going within Ben Kennedy’s fingertips of a third against the Jets last weekend, Ferreira has proven he will be crucial to the Mariners and their charge to the Hyundai A-League finals. - by Patrick Boddan

#16 JOSH KENNEDY

“Bresciano to curl it… KENNEDY! Is that the goal that takes Australia to Brazil?” Like Aloisi’s famous penalty in mid 2005, Kennedy will always be remembered for the header that sent the Socceroos to Rio in 2014. Now decked out in the white and blue of Melbourne City, and back on home soil for the first time in 15 years, the 32-year old has the chance to make Australia - at least for the moment - remember him for a little while longer.

Kennedy Stats Position Striker Date of Birth 20 August 1982 (age 32) Place of Birth Wodonga, Victoria, Australia Height 194cm Weight 84kg Former Clubs Nagoya Grampus (Japan), FC Nürnberg (Germany), Dynamo Dresden (Germany) and many more FCs

With a footballing career spanning nine teams, three continents and 16 years, it could be argued Kennedy is one of Australia’s most successful exports. It was his time at Dynamo Dresden that proved most rewarding for the Victorian’s career, where 16 goals and numerous assists across two seasons for the 2. Bundesliga side saw him earn his first Socceroos call-up under Guus Hiddink for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

From 2:30pm make sure you turn your attention to the field of play where representatives from Central Coast Football Federation local clubs will be participating in a march past in the lead up to their winter competitions. To find your local club visit www.ccfootball.com.au, today the Toukley Gorokan Gunners will receive a guaranteed $1000 from Hyundai through their ‘Hyundai Help for Kids’ promotion and an additional $1000 for every goal scored by the Central Coast Mariners.

20 goals in his subsequent 36 appearances for the national side, and an incredible 63 goals in 128 matches for J. League side Nagoya Grampus, who he joined in 2009, have seen Kennedy establish himself as a dynamic and talented target man. Standing almost 2 metres tall, it is difficult not to be. With marquee man Robert Koren feeding him, Kennedy buried his first Hyundai A-League goal against Adelaide last start with a smart headed effort, and the Central Coast back four will have to be on high alert if they wish to avoid a repeat dose. - by Patrick Boddan

MARINERS CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY are celebrating the unwavering involvement of Sharon Baxter, the Central Coast Mariners Football Business Manager. Sharon has pledged her heart and soul to the Mariners for almost nine years, making her one of the longest serving staff members in the Hyundai A-League. Add that to her 14 years of committee member service with Terrigal Football Club and you can understand why she is a huge part of football on the Central Coast and the Mariners. A mother to three children: Emily, Ryan & Luke – Sharon International Women’s Day is a worldwide also acts as a mum to the playing squad; she is a prime tradition that sees men honouring their mothers, example of how valuable women are to our game and wives, girlfriends, and colleagues – today we goes above and beyond her job title on a day to day basis,

which goes as far as housing newly arriving players in the spare room of her own home when need be. Baxter’s football journey started well before the existence of the Mariners where she managed her little sister’s team and helped raise funds for her to travel to Portugal, Japan and the United States after being selected in the Australian Futsal team. Ask any Mariners player past or present and they will all tell you that ‘Shaz’ will do anything for her players who are more than just ‘players’ to her. “When a player comes along to the club at first they are just a name on a piece of paper. Then they arrive and

you watch these players grow into a part of the Mariners family and that’s what I love most about working in football – we are all one big family even though we have players coming and going. Saying goodbye is the saddest part,” Baxter said. On behalf of the Central Coast Mariners #ThanksShaz – you are truly one of a kind and we couldn’t do it without you.
