Wilko, Maty, Mile & Sains celebrate the Socceroos win over South Korea in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup final (image posted on Twitter by @alexwilkinson84) This time last week, our former Mariners in Alex Wilkinson, Mathew Ryan, Trent Sainsbury and Socceroos Captain Mile Jedinak were gearing up for one of the biggest matches in the history of Australian football. Forming the spine of our national team with one starting centre back, starting goalkeeper, starting central midfielder (captain) as well as a substitute central defender – our boys were a major part of Socceroo history that saw them defeat South Korea in the final of the 2015 AFC Asian Cup. The Socceroos looked as though they were home and hosed but their celebrations were brought to a halt when South Korea scored in the 91st minute taking the final into extra time. The resilience of Tomi Juric and a close range finish from James Troisi won the Socceroos an AFC Asian Cup title on home soil but it were our Mariners who took home most of the individual silverware. Trent Sainsbury in the centre of defence played out of his skin and above his age in front of over 75 000 people to earn man of the match honours whilst Maty Ryan’s incredible efforts over the campaign earnt him the award for AFC goalkeeper of the tournament. The 35-year-old made it clear that the friendships he has accrued since joining the Mariners ahead of the inaugural Hyundai A-League season have been a real highlight. “I’ve had a wonderful chance to meet some fantastic people here and that’s the main thing that I’ll take away from all of it. We’ve won things, but it’s more the mateship from the game and I’ve got friends for life.”

#CCMFC LINK WITH EVERTON In an exciting time for the club, the Central Coast Mariners have established an official partnership with The English Premier League’s Everton Football Club which will centre around youth development.

Mariners during the summer months if Development Co-ordinator Royle and manager Roberto Martinez believe it could assist in their path to the Everton first team.

Everton is exploring loan opportunities for young players in its Under-21 Development squad with the Central Coast based side that could help The Mariners in the fast-emerging football landscape in Australia. The partnership is being progressed by Joe Royle in his role assisting in the final phase of player development at the Premier League club and by Mariners newly appointed associate director Peter Storrie.

The Hyundai A-League has grown significantly since its formation 10 years ago and Mariners owner Mike Charlesworth’s vision is to further grow the club and develop their young players in particular.

Everton boasts an academy and development programme which is renowned as one of the most successful in England and this initiative, which will also allow for an exchange of best practises, may benefit While non-exclusive and exploratory, this could allow young Everton players in coming years. Our Central Coast Mariners backline will have to be on full alert this weekend as the boys from Adelaide arrive off the back of a 7-0 win over Newcastle – Marcelo Carrusca was instrumental. Since joining Adelaide United in 2012 ‘Celo’ Carrusca as he is affectionately known, has been one of the best attacking players in the Hyundai A-League. The Argentinian has a colourful footballing pedigree having played for: Galatasaray who are regular competitors in the UEFA Champions League and Cruz Azul who knocked the Western Sydney Wanderers out of the 2014 FIFA Club World Cup. Carrusca is a crafty midfielder and has been responsible for plenty of Adelaide’s creativity, go forward and a handful of goals.

This weekend when Adelaide return to Central Coast Stadium for the second time this campaign, Carrusca will be in red-hot form, having picked up two goals in the Reds’ 7-0 drubbing of the Jets in their last hit out. Carrusca links up well with his Spanish attacking counterpart in Isaías and will be out to repeat another red-hot performance at Gosford’s idyllic bayside arena.

PLAYER TO PRAISE: #7 JOHN HUTCHINSON John Hutchinson has been the lynchpin of the Central Coast Mariners since day one and other than Archie Thompson (Melbourne Victory) he is the only foundation player in the Hyundai A-League to remain at their original club. Hutch bleeds yellow and this week announced that he would hang up his boots at the completion of the Hyundai A-League 2014/15 season.

Words of support have poured in from the football community and there is no doubt that Hutch will be raring to go for today’s clash against Adelaide. On the football pitch, Hutch has achieved almost everything possible in the Hyundai A-League with a Championship, two Hyundai A-League Premierships and four AFC Champions League campaigns etched in his record.

The progression of our former Mariners stars is further testament to the development of our football staff and on behalf of the Central Coast I would like to congratulate Wilko, Maty, Sains & Mile on their outstanding achievement in winning the premier trophy in Asian national team football.

Like many professionals before him, Hutchinson is making the decision to retire whilst still at the height of his game and today against Adelaide he will be presented with the opportunity to fire up and help the side regather form after the their previous encounter against Sydney FC. Hutch has been formidable in the middle of the park this season, playing a major role in the spine of the Central Coast Mariners line up. Adelaide’s Spanish Flavour will be cancelled out in the heart of the pitch by Hutch’s relentless efforts in the engine room of the Central Coast Mariners whilst still offering enough chances to provide that crucial through ball for a Mariners attacker.
