Chapter Happenings Northern Illinois

Central States By Ron Cudzilo

By Kevin Coursin

The Central States Chapter held their April meeting at Chappell’s in North Kansas City, Missouri. There were eighteen attendees, split down the middle (members and non members). They participated in a presentation by Jeff Watson currently with Custom Chemical of Texas on “The Ins and Outs of Water for your Finishing Process”. Jeff has over twenty years experience including positions ranging from lab tech to blending product to field technician and sales. In 2001 he started R3 Technologies, an industrial water systems company devoted to water purification and recycling applications in the U.S., along with a mirror company in Mexico, which he owned and operated until 2006 when he sold them, continuing with the companies for two more years before moving on. Since 2009 he’s been active as a consultant in industrial and municipal water applications and metal finishing troubleshooting in the U.S., Mexico, and South America. His interactive presentation was well received. A good time was had by all.

Corporate Member Night The CCAI Northern Illinois Chapter held a Corporate Member dinner meeting on April 20th in which corporate members are given an opportunity to present to the chapter about their company and what they do. Marty Powell presented Global Finishing Solutions, LLC to the group. They learned about the history of the company and how it emerged from the combination of several other companies. In addition, Marty had many photos of different systems GFS has installed from small batch systems to large paint rooms for aircraft. Next, Scott Rempala presented Mighty Hook to the chapter with an informative description on the history of the company. It was surprising to find out how many different products they provide and the quantity of hangers they produce. Overall, they learned more about the companies and individuals they see on a regular basis.

Texas By Trena Benson, DuPont CoatingSolutions

The Texas chapter met in Grand Prairie on May 6. The meeting of 19 people included those from all over the Dallas-Ft. Worth area and from as far away as Tyler. Following a luncheon and CCAI presentation, the group visited the Sherwin Williams powder plant. The plant tour, received well by the attendees, was conducted by Joe Higdon plant manager for the Sherwin Williams Arlington, Texas powder plant. The tour went through the various areas of the plant, raw material storage, manufacturing, bonded aluminum department, quality assurance, and last but not least the actual lab where the formulations are created. The attendees showed interest in how powder was actually taken from raw goods to a solid back to a powder and shipped out. Thanks to all who attended!

Twin Cities Nordic Ware Tour – “Home of the Bundt Pan” By Pat Cullen

Ron Jansen of Nordic Ware receives tour appreciation plaque from TC Chapter President Mark Walsworth

On April 15th, the Twin Cities CCAI Chapter sponsored a tour of Nordic Ware (Northland Aluminum Products) in St. Louis Park, MN. About 40 members and non-members attended the tour. Nordic Ware was founded in 1946 and has marketed an extensive line of quality cookware, bake ware, microwave and barbecue products for the last 60-plus years. Actually, Nordic Ware is the home of the Bundt pan which they invented back in 1950. Nearly 60 million Bundt pans have been provided to kitchens across the United States. Attendees were able to view many of the metal fabrication, coating, assembly and packaging stations in the Nordic Ware factory facility. Of particular interest to the tour attendees were the coating applications at Nordic Ware. Nordic daily applies Teflon, paint and powder. There are multiple automatic spray stations in the plant finishing department. Parts to be coated are placed onto conveyor line spindles and moved into spray booths for automatic coating with the spindle line continuing into cure ovens and then to packaging. The tour group broke into four groups led by a Nordic Ware management person. Of local and National CCAI interest; Bruce Reinhardt was one of the tour guides for Nordic Ware. Bruce has been a long time member and supporter of CCAI serving as President of the TC Chapter as well as President of the National CCAI in 1986-87. –8–
