grow. I encourage you to join us at our annual meeting being held in Ft. Lauderdale, FL from June 23-26. This meeting is always a catalyst for great ideas! Check the website, www.ccaiweb.com for more details. Finally, there will be a new CCAI President installed at our annual meeting. Sam Woehler CCAI National President, of George Koch Sons, LLC will Sherrill Stoenner assume the responsibilities and provide leadership to this great association. I’m sure he will find the role as challenging and satisfying as I have. I look forward to continued success for CCAI!

s we round the final turn on my tenure as CCAI president, I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their enthusiasm in support of the growth and development of this association. CCAI members are clearly passionate about what they do for the finishing industry. The CCAI Board of Directors, Corporate and Custom Coater members, along with active chapter members and staff continue to maximize membership potential, and have us all recognize how much we can learn from our finishing community of experts. We need to continue on this path as the future of the finishing industry warrants our attention. We have experienced a LOT of growth and change during my two years as president including our participation in the FABTECH Expo and Conference, the addition of new CCAI chapters, the editing and re-writing of the technical manuals which have been selling more than ever. But one thing remains constant, the mission of the Chemical Coaters Association International -- to continue to provide outstanding educational and networking opportunities to the entire industrial finishing community. As my final message to you, I challenge each of you to get involved with CCAI on some level and help us continue to

Letter from the Executive Director Where Do We Go From Here: Building a Better Finishing Industry Anne Goyer, CCAI Executive Director Over the past two years, CCAI has seen a tremendous amount of activity. We’ve launched new chapters, we joined FABTECH as a partner to bring finishing to one of the largest shows in North America and our FINISHING Pavilion is now one of the largest FINISHING show in North America, we have re-written (and are still in the process of doing so) our popular training manuals, we’ve seen our membership steadily grow through tough times, and we are launching a statistics program. But that’s not enough. We can and need to do more. We need to work together to build a “better finishing industry” for our members, for their companies and for the long-term health of American manufacturing. We need to do more to encourage young talent to think of our industry as a place where they can develop a rewarding career. A recent CCAI Salary and Demographics survey of our members tells us that people make a good living as a part of our industry. But are we spreading that word? Are we talking to our kids about careers in finishing and manufacturing? Are high schools and colleges aware that careers in finishing even exist? In doing research for a presentation at the Minnesota Paint & Powder Expo, I’ve quickly learned our workforce is aging (I think we already knew that) and we do not have enough skilled people to take their place as they are getting ready to retire. The lack of skilled labor is something we need to face and address now. The education and training our members get through CCAI is so important but I’m afraid that’s not enough. We need to “step it up” and develop programs that

train and educate the next generation of finishing professionals. And we need to do it together, starting now. CCAI is working to develop promotion and programs that will drive awareness that there are many viable career options in the finishing world. We may call on you to tell us about your experiences in finishing. We may ask for your advice that we can share with students who are searching for a career path. In the coming months, if someone from CCAI asks you for information that will help us build a better finishing industry, we ask that you take some time to participate. We won’t ask for much time, there is no financial investment involved. Thanks to everyone who recently responded to the CCAI Demographic and Salary Survey. Thirty percent of our membership responded giving us some great data to lay the foundation of our Building a Better Finishing Industry initiative. You’ll be hearing a lot about this in the coming year. At our upcoming CCAI Annual Meeting this June, I’ll be presenting the results of our recent survey together with other initiatives that we can combine with our own to help create the skilled labor force manufacturing needs to continue to produce high quality finished products. From your entire CCAI Board of Directors and Staff, we sincerely thank you for your support and efforts to help CCAI continue to deliver the education and training our industry needs. We can’t do it without you. I look forward to seeing many of you in Ft. Lauderdale for our Annual Meeting from June 23 – 26. If you haven’t been to a CCAI Annual Meeting, this would be perfect one to attend! RENEW ONLINE…www.ccaiweb.com OR click the QR Code here to access the renewal form!

FABTECH 2012 CCAI’s FINISHING Pavilion at FABTECH Expected to be Largest Yet While FABTECH isn’t until November 12 - 14, much of the planning is well underway. With a show floor that will feature more than 1,000 exhibitors and a conference program that will offer more than 100 technical sessions, planning never really stops. For CCAI, the presence of finishing on the show floor is becoming more prominent with each FABTECH show. 2012 is shaping up to be our largest FINISHING Pavilion to date. CCAI’s FINISHING Pavilion is closing in on 20,000 net square feet of exhibit space sold and it’s only March. We anticipate that we will sell out our floor space by the time CCAI’s Annual Meeting rolls around in June. What’s even more exciting is that many of our exhibitors have increased their booth space significantly, allowing them to bring and demonstrate more equipment and products than in the past. CCAI’s FINISHING Pavilion is fast becoming “the destination” for the entire finishing industryto find and experience at new technologies, compare products and services and take advantage of the vast array of educational opportunities available. Conference programming for CCAI’s FINISHING Conference

is currently in development, promising to deliver timely and important educational information for all finishers, as always! For anyone concerned about attendance at FABTECH 2012, the last time FABTECH was in Las Vegas, (in 2008) it drew more than 22,000 attendees, nearly half from east of the Mississippi. This year’s FABTECH in Las Vegas is expected to draw more than 25,000 attendees. During a recent FABTECH Exhibitor Council meeting, FABTECH exhibitor Nick Ostrowski, General Manager of Amada America, one of the largest exhibitors in the show, told the Council that business on the West Coast is the strongest they’ve seen in years. Combined with the strong draw of attendees from the Midwest, East Coast and Southeast, Mr. Ostrowski said he is confident that FABTECH 2012 in Las Vegas will be a fantastic show. If you haven’t had a chance to check out CCAI’s FINISHING Pavilion and list of exhibitors lately, go to www.ccaiweb.com and click on the FABTECH logo. You can bring up the current floor plan and list of exhibitors. Start planning now! Check airfares and book your flights when you find a reasonable fare. CCAI has designated Treasure Island as its headquarters hotel. Room rates are very reasonable - $105 from Sunday, Nov. 11 through Thursday, Nov. 15 and $145 the weekend before the show. Go to www.fabtechexpo.com and click on HOTEL AND TRAVEL to book now. FABTECH will provide shuttle bus service from Treasure Island to the Las Vegas Convention Center on show days. We look forward to seeing many of you in Las Vegas this November!

IntelliFinishing Ingenuity

Courtesy of Salina Journal, February 26, 2012 It takes less space. It runs on less energy. It’s low-maintenance, and it offers flexibility that is changing the way things are made. An ability to innovate in hard times can help bring back good times, and Kasa is among several of Salina’s longtime industries that have survived and thrived because of their ability to respond to a changing market. Kasa created IntelliFinishing, a modular industrial painting system. They are facing the challenge of introducing change to a manufacturing process that has stayed essentially the same for 40 years, said Doug Oliphant, vice president of IntelliFinishing. “The more installs we get, the more references and the more believers there are,” Oliphant said. “Success breeds success.” IntelliFinishing is redefining business as usual for its parent corporation, and Oliphant said the timing for its launch may turn out to be “really good.” “Economic indicators are that things are coming back, and we’re ready to go,” he said. “Our company’s philosophy is that we always have to be growing. If you’re just steady, you’re dying.” To read the complete article, contact Kelly LeCount at kelly@goyermgt.com.
