Christian Brothers High School • Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Welcome to all our new families and welcome back to all of our returning families! 2015-16 has begun and it has been a fabulous start to the school year. The excitement, the energy, the terrific positive momentum around campus is palpable. Walking around campus, one can feel the wonder of relationships renewed and newly formed, and the presence of a delightful atmosphere spreading contagiously. Whether at Freshman Lock-in or the opening day prayer service; whether in the classroom or on the lawn at lunch; with parents at Back-to-School night or peering into the almost finished Chapel; watching action on the practice fields and courts or listening to the laughter in the faculty lounge, this new school year brings a magical dynamism that delights. As we are with our students, the enjoyment of overhearing hallway chatter sharing celebratory moments such as, “I got my license,” and “I love my classes,” warms the hearts of faculty and staff and gives meaning to our days, as we partner with you in this Lasallian mission of a “human and Christian education.” On a personal level, all of this feels even sweeter as my husband and I mark a new milestone in our lives – not only are we “empty-nesters,” something we’ve been experiencing since our youngest left for college in fall 2006, but by this time next month we will be, in some ways, officially “done” with the parenting journey. Our children, CBHS classes of ’99, ’02, and ’06, will all be well and truly adults – finished with college, both undergraduate and graduate, gainfully employed, and married. Our son was married in June and our youngest daughter will be wed at the end of this month (the middle daughter has been married for 8 years now, and given us three beautiful

grandchildren). So I can honestly share it is a bittersweet feeling to know that our job is done – not that any of us ever stop being parents, but the roles have shifted and left us wondering “What next?” Coming into this season of my life causes me to remember the significant responsibility each of you is experiencing as the parent of a teenager – probably one of the most difficult jobs in the world! The good news I can share with you is that it is all worth it – the time, effort, resources, and great love you invest in your children now, in spite of the challenges and sometimes heartache of navigating with them the choppy waters of adolescence, will result in tremendous dividends as you observe them mature and grow into capable, successful adults. We here at Christian Brothers view it a privilege to walk with you on this journey. We hope that this year gives you time to savor the high school years with your child. As the late comedian George Carlin wrote, “Give time to love. . . And always remember, life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by those moments that take our breath away.” Knowing we are all in God’s holy presence, we look to Him to guide us in developing strong values and character in our students – your children – united with you in our desire to serve them and prepare them well for the future. But we know that, as Mother Teresa said, “Yesterday is gone, tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.” Here’s to a great beginning!

Live Jesus in our hearts,
