FALCON FAMILY NEWS CB IS THE PLACE TO BE AN ARTIST DEAR FAMILIES: “Things are unpredictable, and we don’t know what the future holds. But every day that we get to be together doing what we love is a gift. So, we’re going to take it one day at a time.” This was the message of director Michael D. Jackson to the cast of our fall musical, “Call Me Madam,” on the first day of rehearsal. After three semesters without a live production, we were hoping to be in front of audiences once again, but even that was uncertain. The pandemic and hybrid learning tested the resolve and creativity of all our teachers and student artists. Ceramics teacher Rob Boriskin sent loads of clay home with kids to roll and shape on kitchen counters, choral students recorded their voices individually so director Christian Bohm could edit them together for a virtual concert, and theatre went old school with radio productions. And though I couldn’t be prouder of how our entire CB Arts community rose to the challenge, the thrill of making art together on campus again has been euphoric. I walk into my office in the George Cunningham ’40 Performing Arts Center to the sound of songs from the Star Wars films emanating from the band room. I cross the Main Lawn where KBFT students are filming video segments for broadcast. The work of the visual arts students is on display in a brand-new case by the Learning Commons. And I will never forget the whoop of joy from the cast when we were informed that, thanks to CB’s phenomenal weekly COVID-19 testing efforts, we would be able to perform without face masks. The heart of a Lasallian school is shared community experience. De La Salle and the Brothers made an intentional choice to do their work “together and by association.” And though I’ve spent 12 years of my life at CB, I’ve never felt the profound gift of togetherness in quite the way I feel it this year. From the administrators who have worked so hard to provide the testing, equipment, and procedures that keep us healthy, to the parent volunteers who graciously give their time in service to the school, to my colleagues who attend shows and concerts after a long day of teaching in support of their beloved students,
and the broader community who put up with the discomfort of face masks while on campus so that we can safely be together, everyone has pitched in to keep us doing what we love. Words can’t express my gratitude. Thank you for supporting our school, our students, and the Arts, one day at a time. With heartfelt thanks,
Heather Christianson ‘01 Technical Director, George Cunningham ‘40 Performing Arts Center Performing Arts Teacher
