Elezar Roa's Triumph Over Leukemia

Elezar Roa is a vibrant 5-year-old and a living example of resilience and strength. His journey took an unexpected turn when he was diagnosed with leukemia, shaking his family’s world. His story is not just one of illness, but of hope, perseverance, and the power of community support.

At the time, Elezar was only 2 years old when he went in for a regular well-child visit with Vanessa Frank, Pediatric ARNP, who noticed irregularities during a routine well-child visit. Vanessa's attention to detail and commitment to her patients led her to order further tests, and refer Elezar to a specialist, who later confirmed his leukemia diagnosis. This early detection was critical in getting him the treatment he needed as quickly as possible.

During the most difficult times, Elezar’s parents had to navigate an emotional rollercoaster. “We quickly moved into the Ronald McDonald house in Spokane and Elezar started his treatment,” says his mom, Brenda Roa. “It was tough because we had to be away from our other son while he stayed with our family.” The Roa family faced long hospital stays, emotional challenges, and logistical hurdles, all while doing their best to maintain a sense of normalcy for all three of their children.

One of the key lessons Brenda learned was to lean on those around her. “Cry if you need to, let it out, and lean on whoever’s there,” she advises other parents in similar situations. It was this support—both from friends, family, and their community—that helped the Roa family get through the darkest days. The kindness they received ranged from meals dropped off at their home to heartfelt encouragement.

Elezar’s family also had the opportunity to participate in a special parade, organized by a close friend and supported by CBHA, the Othello Police Department, the Othello Fire Department, and the Othello School District. What started as a simple idea snowballed into an event that brought the whole community together to support Elezar. The parade, which included fire trucks, police cars, and school buses, brought joy and a sense of celebration for his bravery during such a tough journey.

Well child exams are so important! At these appointments, we make sure that your child is reaching their milestones and growing healthy.

Vanessa Frank Pediatric ARNP

Thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Elezar’s dream beach getaway came true. He wished to swim and eat shrimp, and Make-A-Wish made it happen by sending him and his family to the Aulani Disney Resort in Hawaii. The resort offered fun activities like character meet-and-greets, a Luau, trickor-treating, and making Mickey ears. Elezar also enjoyed stunning sunsets, spotting sea turtles, and, of course, his favorite food— shrimp. It was the perfect, magical escape for Elezar and his family after a tough journey. Elezar said, “I had sooo much fun!”

“Well child exams are so important!” says Vanessa Frank. “At these appointments, we make sure that your child is reaching their milestones and growing healthy. Because Brenda was consistent in scheduling her child’s exams, we were able to catch his diagnosis early and start treatment earlier, which lead to the success of him becoming Cancer free!”

Elezar’s family hopes to continue spreading awareness about childhood cancer and the importance of regular well-child exams to inspire other families to remain hopeful through tough times. While there are still challenges ahead, Elezar's story serves as a powerful reminder that, with support, hope, and perseverance, the toughest battles can be overcome.

We will always be here to walk you through your health journey and celebrate the big and small milestones in your family’s lives! Wellchild checkups are important! If you haven’t scheduled your child’s exam, now is the time to do so! Visit CBHA.org or call/text

Elevating to Excellence: Daniela Voorhies

At CBHA, we believe in taking care of both our patients and our employees. By investing in the future of our staff, we empower them to better serve our communities. Our programs, like Ed Bucks and 529 College Savings, encourage our team members to pursue further education while receiving guidance from our leadership to achieve their career goals.

Daniela started as a Pharmacy Assistant in May 2016. Over the years, through hard work and continuous learning, she advanced to Pharmacy Services Supervisor in February 2017 and eventually became the Wahluke Clinic Manager in October 2021.

Daniela credits her journey to a combination of personal motivation and the support she received from CBHA. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Central Washington University before working with CBHA and later pursued an MBA in Healthcare Management from Western Governors University, utilizing CBHA’s Ed Bucks program. The decision to go back to school was fueled by a desire for personal development and opening new doors for career advancement.

Throughout her time at CBHA, Daniela took on several projects that helped her grow both professionally and personally. She played an integral role in initiatives such as Pickpoint, school health screenings, Synctimes, our new Royal City Clinic, and community outreach events, and even helped develop the PSR Training Manual. CBHA’s commitment to professional growth made it easier for her to balance work, life, and studies with flexible scheduling and financial support.

Now, as the Wahluke Clinic Manager, Daniela oversees daily operations and is currently planning the first annual PSR training event. Daniela’s journey is a testament to the opportunities available within CBHA for those willing to put in the effort and stay committed to their goals. “Determine your path, chat with your supervisor, and communicate your goals. We are here to help and want you to succeed!" says Daniela.

At CBHA, our employees' success is also our success. We are committed to fostering their growth by encouraging them to expand their knowledge and skills at every opportunity. Our leadership team is always here to provide guidance and support, cheering them on every step of the way as they achieve their goals.

CBHA in Action: Giving Back to Our Community

Through Summer Events

This summer, CBHA was deeply involved in a wide range of community events, demonstrating our commitment to supporting and giving back to those we serve.

From participating in local parades to hosting family nights and dress-up days, our staff showed up in full force to engage with the community. We organized staff lunches to foster team spirit, while also taking part in important community outreach initiatives such as car seat safety Clinics and offering physicals for our farmworkers.

Partnering with local schools and police departments, we worked together to strengthen the bonds of our community.

Every event was an opportunity for our staff to volunteer their time and expertise, reinforcing our mission to not only provide health care but to actively support the well-being of our neighbors.

It was a reminder that being a part of this community means giving back and lifting each other up.

If you’re passionate about making a difference and want to be part of an organization that truly values community, apply today and join us in giving back.

Together, we can create a stronger, healthier future for all.

Being part of this community means giving back and lifting each other up. Every event is an opportunity to connect, support, and make a lasting impact.
