Dear CBHA Family and Community

What an incredible season of momentum, milestones, and meaning! I’m thrilled to share a moment of well-earned celebration with you, our community. For the sixth year in a row, CBHA has been named one of Modern Healthcare’s Best Places to Work in Healthcare for 2025! This is more than a title, it’s a reflection of the heart and soul our employees bring to this organization every single day. This recognition speaks to the culture we strive to create together - one where voices matter, every role contributes to something bigger, and every team member feels supported, inspired, and empowered to do their best work.

At CBHA, we don’t just talk about employee satisfaction and engagement; we invest in it. From our ED Bucks program and university scholarships to wellness incentives, mentorship, and leadership development, as well as our joyful All Staff Week traditions and Community Volunteer initiatives, we are building a workplace that genuinely nurtures growth, purpose, and pride.

I often say that CBHA is more than a healthcare provider. We are a mission in motion. That mission, to serve everyone with dignity, compassion, and high-quality care regardless of background or ability to pay, continues to expand in remarkable ways.

One of the most exciting examples is the West Pasco Clinic, which is accelerating faster than ever. Construction continues, and I’m delighted to share that we are on track to welcome our first patients before the end of November. This facility represents not just bricks, windows, and mortar—it represents access, equity, and excellence delivered closer to home for more families in the Columbia Basin region.

Our West Pasco expansion builds on the strong momentum we’ve seen with recent clinic launches in Royal City and our original Pasco location. Whether it’s opening dental services in underserved areas or embedding behavioral health counselors directly into local schools, CBHA is committed to meeting people where they are, with the services they need and the care they deserve.

And we’ve continued to ask ourselves, with curiosity and courage: How can we be even better than the year before?

That question isn’t about ambition for ambition’s sake; it’s about our responsibility. To each other. To our patients. To our communities. It’s about creating a place where care is comprehensive, access is equitable, and joy is part of the daily experience, for staff and patients alike. Every CBHA team member plays a part in this story. From our front desk staff and providers to our HR leaders and IT wizards, from our outreach teams to our facilities crew, they make this place what it is.

This is YOUR CBHA!

We will carry this momentum forward into the second half of 2025 with pride, determination, and that unmistakable CBHA spirit. The world needs more organizations like CBHA, rooted in love, driven by service, and powered by people who believe in something bigger than themselves.

Creating a home for

Big things are happening in Pasco, and we’re not just talking about the walls and beams, but the deep commitment to care, connection and community.

Columbia Basin Health Association (CBHA) is making remarkable progress on its upcoming West Pasco Clinic; a state-of-the-art, 35,000 square foot integrated health care facility located at the corner of North Road 68 and Three Rivers Drive. But inside of all that, its building hope, access, and a future filled with possibilities.

Since breaking ground in September 2024, construction has advanced steadily, with doors expected to open to patients by November 2025. This modern, purpose-built clinic is more than just a building, it’s a bold step forward in CBHA’s mission to provide equal access to quality health care for all, regardless of age, income, background, or insurance status.

Franklin County has long faced a shortage of primary care providers. CBHA’s research showed a shortage of approximately 120 providers in the Tri-cities region to meet growing demands and reduce appointment wait times, which can range from three to six months. That’s too long to wait for care.

This new clinic was designed with that urgency in mind. Once complete, it will have the capacity to support up to 15 primary care providers and six dental providers, phased in over

“Our new Healthcare Clinic in Pasco represents a significant step forward in our mission to enhance healthcare access and quality for underserved communities,” said Nieves Gomez, CEO of CBHA. “We are proud to bring our award-winning culture and comprehensive range of services to Pasco, where we will continue to strive for excellence in patient care and community impact. We look forward to welcoming the community to our new facility and providing a range of services that meet the evolving needs of Pasco and its surrounding areas.”

Until the new clinic opens, CBHA continues to provide care at its temporary Pasco location at 6115 Burden Blvd, which opened in November 2023 and currently offers primary care and behavioral health services, including a rotating psychiatric nurse practitioner.

In the words of our CEO, Nieves Gomez “This project is about meeting people where they are and lifting up the whole community. Everyone deserves great care, and this clinic will deliver just that.”

Your Men's

Health Questions with Doug Jahns, ARNP

When it comes to health, many men tend to take a “tough it out” approach, often avoiding the doctor until something feels seriously wrong. But the truth is, many of the most common health concerns for men, like high blood pressure, heart disease, and obesity, often develop silently and gradually. Taking a proactive approach with regular check-ups, screenings, and healthy lifestyle habits can make all the difference in staying ahead of serious issues and living a longer, healthier life.

You may have questions about men’s health, like when to schedule appointments, what screenings you really need, or what to expect during a visit. Doug Jahns, ARNP at CBHA, is here to answer all of those questions and help guide you toward better long-term health.

What are some common health concerns men should be aware of?

There are many health problems that men face. They often get ignored until the damage becomes permanent. This includes high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, mental health issues, obesity and diabetes.

Many of these conditions are preventable or manageable with regular check-ups, healthy lifestyle habits, and early intervention. Taking the time to prioritize your health can make all the difference.

Why is it important for men to have yearly check-ups, even if they feel fine?

Some of the biggest medical problems that plague men have no symptoms or can be considered normal. For example, elevated blood pressure has no symptoms but slowly does damage to key body systems. An annual check-up can quickly and painlessly detect this condition and we can start to correct it before damage is done.

Additionally, while strength is often associated with size, carrying extra weight can quietly strain your joints, back, and overall health. Regular checkups offer an opportunity to monitor weight, assess overall wellness, and make small adjustments that protect long-term strength, mobility, and quality of life. Prevention today supports a healthier tomorrow.

Are there any key screenings or tests you recommend for men?

Some key screenings for men start at age 45, and it's most likely for colon cancer. A lot of men shy away from this test due to embarrassment and fear of a colonoscopy. But there are less invasive ways to test for colon cancer that you can ask your provider about.

Prevention isn’t about fear; it’s about catching problems early and supporting your long-term well-being.

Doug Jahns, ARNP Family Practice

Other regular screenings include, blood pressure check, cholesterol test, diabetes screening and Prostate Cancer Screening. These screenings are important tools to stay ahead of potential health issues.

How can regular visits to a provider help prevent serious health issues?

Most serious health problems like diabetes, heart disease, kidney failure, hypertension or cancer develop slowly and can be caught early, often before symptoms appear. Regular checkups help providers track changes over time, offer screenings, update vaccinations, and give personalized advice. What feels like normal aging could be an early warning sign. Catching issues early makes treatment easier and more effective.

What are a few simple things men can do to take better care of their health?

Your body is a brilliant creation that adapts to keep you alive. I tell all my patients the greatest thing they can do for their health is:

1. Eat a balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, and meat while avoiding processed foods.

2. Get exercise. The body is made to move and when you stop, it begins to break down.

3. Get adequate sleep. Sleep is when your body repairs damage and your mind processes stress. Without it, stress builds up, raising the risk of anxiety and depression.

How do you encourage men to talk openly about their health, especially when it comes to topics like mental health?

I keep it real and talk to them person-to-person. I let them know I’m here to support their health, both physical and mental. I’m direct when bringing up issues like anxiety or depression, because they’re common and nothing to be ashamed of. A lot of men see these struggles as weakness, so I make it clear there’s no judgment. Creating a safe, open space often helps them feel comfortable sharing what’s really going on.

What advice would you give to someone who hasn’t seen a provider in a long time?

Get in to be seen. Most of us are really nice and just want to help you stay healthy.

Any final message you’d like to share with men in our community?

Many men delay medical visits out of concern that something might be wrong. There's often a belief that focusing on our own health takes a back seat to providing for our families. However, neglecting health can lead to problems that ultimately prevent us from fulfilling that role. The truth is that many conditions are easily treatable when detected early. Prioritizing your health is one of the most important ways you can care for those who depend on you. Make the appointment, it matters.

Your health is too important to ignore. Whether it’s been a while since your last check-up or you’re just not sure where to start, Doug is here to help. Preventive care isn’t about fear; it’s about catching problems early and supporting your long-term well-being.

Ready to take control of your health? Schedule an appointment with Doug Jahns, ARNP, and take the first step toward a healthier, stronger you.

Eileen Kelley didn’t originally plan to go into dentistry; she was on track to become a nurse! But after a life-changing family tragedy, her path shifted, leading her to discover her true passion in dental hygiene.

Eileen earned her dental hygiene degree from Columbia Basin College in 2018, and since then, she’s been dedicated to helping people improve their oral health and feel more confident in their smiles.

What drew her to CBHA was our commitment to treating the whole person, where every department works together as one care team. Eileen is excited to be part of an organization that values patient education, family support, and overall wellness just as much as she does.

Elevating to Excellence: Employee Spotlight Christina Toro

“At CBHA, we believe in developing strong leaders who make a real difference in the lives of our patients and communities," says CEO Nieves Gomez. "Christina Toro is a shining example of that leadership in action.”

CBHA has long been committed to fostering growth and excellence among its team members, and Christina Toro’s recent recognition with a national award is proof of that dedication. Her passion for patient engagement and innovative healthcare solutions has not only transformed CBHA but has now earned her the prestigious Geiger Gibson Emerging Leader Award.

The Geiger Gibson Emerging Leader Award

Christina Toro received the Geiger Gibson Emerging Leader Award, presented by the Geiger Gibson Program in Community Health Policy at George Washington University's Milken Institute School of Public Health. This prestigious award, given in collaboration with the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC), recognizes young professionals who have significantly advanced the mission of community health centers by ensuring accessible and quality healthcare for underserved populations.

"Christina has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to improving patient experiences and access to care for underserved populations, including the migrant and seasonal farm-working families who form the heart of our community," said CBHA CEO, Nieves Gomez.

A Steady Climb to Leadership

A Royal City High School graduate, Christina pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration from the University of Phoenix. Her journey at CBHA began in 2015 as a Management Trainee, and from there, she rapidly advanced through various leadership roles.

In just a few years, she transitioned from Clinic Manager to Call Center Supervisor, Director of Patient Connections, Site Director, and Director of Patient Engagement in 2020—a position she continues to thrive in today. Over the years, she has supervised departments ranging from patient services and referrals to quality control and even the Othello Clinic café.

Passion for Innovation and Patient Experience

Christina’s passion for enhancing the patient experience is evident in the impactful projects she has led. One of her most significant initiatives was developing CBHA’s pre-registration process in 2016, which drastically reduced patient registration

time from an average of five minutes to under two.

Growth comes from challenges, and true leadership is about making a difference, not just for your team, but for those you serve.

Another milestone was the implementation of an advanced appointment reminder system, transitioning from traditional phone calls to automated text messages. These initiatives, along with her involvement in our self–scheduling program and patient portal advancements, have transformed the way CBHA interacts with its patients.

One of Christina's most impactful projects has been CBHA's mobile and digital transformation initiative. "Thanks to her efforts, patients—many of whom are migrant and seasonal farm-working families facing barriers to care, language limitations, and low literacy—now have the ability to schedule appointments through multiple channels tailored to their needs, including text, QR code campaigns, chatbots, IVR, the patient portal, and over-the-phone scheduling in dual-language services," said Gomez.

Under her leadership, 10% of CBHA’s total visits are now scheduled through mobile devices, increasing accessibility for patients, reducing no-show visits, and improving patient satisfaction scores.

Leading with Purpose

Currently, Christina oversees multiple key areas at CBHA, including patient engagement, patient experience, performance improvement, referrals, quality management, the contact center, and provider scheduling across all service lines.

"Leadership isn’t about being afraid to make mistakes—it’s about learning, supporting, and guiding others. Growth comes from challenges, and true leadership is about making a difference, not just for your team, but for those you serve," says Christina Toro.

Her remarkable journey at CBHA and her well-deserved recognition highlight her dedication to both leadership and patient care. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance, innovation, and the unwavering support of a strong organizational culture.

Dr. Rebecca Pfaff welcome

FAMILY PRACTICE OTHELLO CLINIC

“I’ve been fortunate to work with a wide range of communities, including Amish families, and each experience has deepened my commitment to providing care. I have a passion for maternal health, and helping bring new life into the world is one of the greatest joys of work.”

Before becoming a doctor, Dr. Rebecca Pfaff studied anthropology at Wellesley College, an experience that sparked her interest in people, cultures, and the social roots of health. Now a family practice provider at CBHA, Dr. Pfaff brings curiosity and compassion into every patient interaction.

Originally from the Olympic Peninsula, she always knew she wanted to care for families through every stage of life. Her path led her to Meharry Medical College, where she focused on social justice in healthcare, and later to rural Wisconsin, where she trained in family medicine.

For Dr. Pfaff, healthcare is more than treating illness; it's about building relationships, earning trust, and creating a healthier future together.

Albert Ngugi welcome

PHARMACIST

OTHELLO CLINIC

“My love for healthcare comes from a genuine desire to support people, whether it’s through medication counseling, nutrition advice, or just being someone who listens. I understand how important it is to be accessible and approachable for every patient.”

Albert Ngugi is originally from Nairobi, Kenya, and made his way to the U.S. by way of California’s Bay Area in search of new opportunities with his family.

Albert brings a global perspective and a deep passion for helping others to his role as a pharmacist at CBHA. After earning his undergraduate degree from UC Santa Cruz, he went on to receive his Doctor of Pharmacy from Washington State University. What drew him to CBHA was our strong community focus. From events like the 5K Color Run to the way we care for both employees and residents, Albert knew this was a place where he could make a real impact, not just as a pharmacist, but as a trusted community partner.

The Harvey Family Story

For Michael Harvey, the bond with his adopted brother, Jimmy “James” Taylor, who had Down syndrome shaped his life in profound ways. Growing up, Michael had promised his parents he would always care for James if anything happened to them. When his James passed away unexpectedly, Michael felt the weight of what he describes as "an unbroken promise."

Little did he know that life would offer him another chance to fulfill that promise—one that would come in the most beautiful and unexpected way.

A Promise Renewed

When Michael and his wife, Fern, learned they were expecting a child, they eagerly embraced the journey ahead, filled with excitement and routine checkups. Initial genetic blood tests came back normal, giving them no reason for concern.

However, during their 20-week ultrasound, doctors discovered a cyst in the baby's armpit, leading to further testing.

"When we went in for the 20-week ultrasound, they found that cyst in his armpit, and right away, my OB referred me to a specialist," Fern recalls. An amniocentesis later confirmed that their unborn baby boy, Kingston “King” James Harvey, had Down syndrome, despite earlier blood work indicating otherwise.

For many parents, this news might bring uncertainty or fear, but for Michael, it was something else entirely.

"When we found out that King was going to have Down syndrome, I was actually super excited," Michael shares. "I felt like I was able to fulfill that promise of taking care of my brother with Down syndrome."

For Michael, King's diagnosis wasn't a setback but a blessing—a chance to honor his brother and embrace a purpose he had long held in his heart.

A Journey of Strength

The path forward wasn't always smooth.

During a detailed follow-up ultrasound, doctors discovered King had hydrops fetalis—a condition where fluid builds up in a baby's body. Fern began developing Mirror syndrome, where the mother experiences the same symptoms as the baby.

With serious concerns for both Fern and King’s health, doctors presented them with difficult options. They decided to give King a fighting chance, knowing there was a 1-5% chance that he would survive delivery at 30 weeks.

"The day before, I just prayed,” Michael remembers. “I knew I had to enjoy him, whether it was for either five minutes or for life.”

King surprised everyone with his resilience. His tiny body drained nearly 900 milliliters of fluid daily through chest tubes, and though he had moments where his body began going into shock, he continued to improve.

"Our heavenly Father was on our side," Fern says softly. "Just from one day to another, his body started absorbing all that water, and he started thriving from there."

A Life Filled with Love

Today, King is a source of immeasurable joy to his family. The Harveys share that while raising a child with Down syndrome requires patience and dedication, the rewards are beyond measurable.

"Kids with Down syndrome give the most genuine love," Fern explains with a smile. "It's not always easy, but every single day there's something beautiful to celebrate."

"The only disability is a bad attitude,” Michael adds. “You have to have a positive attitude because that little hug or that little 'I love you' is so worth it, so rewarding."

“The only disability is a bad attitude. You have to have a positive attitude because that little hug or that little ‘I love you’ is so worth it, so rewarding.”

What makes the Harveys story even more remarkable is a spiritual experience Michael had weeks before King was born. In a dream, Michael's late brother appeared to him with a message:

“Michael you’re going to have a son with Down syndrome, and you’re going to name him Kingston James Harvey.

This special connection between Michael's past—caring for his brother—and his future as a father to King added another layer of meaning to their journey, confirming for Michael that this path was meant to be.

How CBHA's 5K Color Run Makes a Difference

Stories like the Harvey family’s remind us why CBHA's 5K Color Run is so important. By recognizing various childhood conditions, including Down syndrome, the Color Run creates awareness and builds community support for families on similar journeys.

Funds raised from the 5K Color Run help provide essential resources, education, and specialized medical care—lifelines for families like the Harveys.

When you participate in CBHA's 5K Color Run, you're not just running for awareness—you're running alongside families (like the Harveys), supporting their journey every step of the way.

For parents new to the Down syndrome journey, Fern offers a simple but powerful recommendation:

“Read the ‘Welcome to Holland’ poem. It’s something that only truly resonates when you’ve experienced it. The road may be long, but it is so, so worth it.”

Thank you to everyone who joined us at this year’s 5K Color Run on August 23rd. Together, we supported families like the Harvey’s and helped share their heartfelt message. As Michael reminded us, “There’s nothing ‘down’ about it.”
