Serving a geographical area of nearly 13,000 square kilometers, CBDC Northumberland encourages economic development by strengthening local expertise and improving resource distribution, generating wealth in New Brunswick’s largest county. Its decision-making processes are facilitated by its Board of Directors, comprised of leaders from the business and community sectors.
Creating local jobs: Over the past year, CBDC Northumberland has helped to create and maintain 203 local jobs. Efforts to support and invest in small and medium-sized businesses are designed to stimulate community-level development and to encourage economic growth and diversity. This reinforces one of our primary objectives: to grow the regional workforce.
Supporting rural communities: CBDC Northumberland believes in the power of entrepreneurship as a means to keep young people in rural communities. To that end, we strive to reach out to aspiring young entrepreneurs to help make their dreams a reality. For the very first time, CBDC Northumberland sponsored the Young Entrepreneur Award at the Greater Miramichi Chamber of Commerce Gala this year, with Cole Price Construction receiving the honour.
Leveraging local resources: Schools and colleges play an important role in promoting entrepreneurship Our staff is proud to partner with the New Brunswick Community College Miramichi campus, highlighting opportunities and providing advice to the next generation on how to start their own business. CBDC Northumberland also works closely with neighbouring CBDCs as we continue to support and approve projects across
the county while diversifying the fields in which we operate. Tying in with these efforts, our Executive Director sits on the Economic Development and Labour Force Advisory Committee of the Greater Miramichi Regional Service Commission.
Embracing cooperation and solidarity: Thanks to its Social Enterprise Loans and Consultant Advisory Services, CBDC Northumberland is one of the few places in New Brunswick where notfor-profit organizations can receive financial support and guidance. This fiscal year, we have invested $300,000 in social enterprise projects in Northumberland County.
Forging closer ties with the First Nations: CBDC Northumberland is based in the City of Miramichi, located in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. We recognize the First Nations of Esgenoôpetitj, Natoaganeg and Metepenagiag. In keeping with CBDC’s inclusive services mandate, our Board and Staff remain aware of local cultural and economic needs. CBDC Northumberland is also proud to have Chief George Ginnish of Natoaganeg as the representative of local First Nations on its Board, strengthening its collaboration with all communities within its service area.
