Welcome Everyone to our 25th Annual Production Sale We are truly honoured that you have chosen our program to enhance your own cow herd. We are inspired by those who share our optimism for the future of the cattle industry and continue to make Alberta Beef a world leading choice for beef. It’s been a trying year in our little part of the world to say the least. After such an optimistic spring where we ran some water to the dugouts and sloughs, it got continually harder as the hot, dry days kept running together and things dried up fast. Cows grazed all the hay fields but fortunate for us as not so much for our wonderful neighbours, we were able to bale much of the crops that they were unable to combine making winter diets a challenge again. The bulls on the other hand have come through the summer looking amazing. This is testament to the work our family puts into sourcing genetics, old and new that will exceed expectations in any environment. With the market looking extremely strong and no signs of slowing down for awhile, keeping that extra money in your pocket will be the key. Feed, equipment, fuel and other expenses will all keep us very close to a calculator. Raising cattle that are super efficient while maintaining structural soundness, fertility and taping into carcass quality premiums will be very important. Although we will never lose sight of the wonderful maternal qualities of the Angus and Hereford cow, I feel that the growing demand for the Angus and Angus cross carcass is what needs our attention. After all, and again don’t get me wrong when I say this, but very few consumers get to see our amazing cow herds as our beef goes on display at every grocery store in the world. As my thought process has changed a bit on this the last few years I am always up for conversations on this topic. When you venture into grocery stores and restaurants please take note of the size of cuts of beef offered and please ask which sell out first. I am very interested to know your thoughts. The bulls and females on offer are cattle that will pass these tests with flying colours. They are cattle that are constantly handled both on horseback and on foot, are forced to walk miles a day and are raised for long term health. It is a breeding program that has charted a course to breed profitable cattle to progressive cattlemen who sell quality pounds for a living. We continue to take advantage of embryo transplant of our most superior cow families along with the intense selection of superior sires to make every calf crop stronger than the last. Everything we do is based on how it will affect the production and profitability of the customers we serve. We are excited to have you evaluate our power packed 2023 sale offering as our program is continually restructured requiring our cattle to perform with fewer inputs and still have both the cow herd and bulls respond very admirably. The owners, their employees, sales staff and representatives, and facility owner assume no liability legal or otherwise, for any incidents that occur. HEALTH: All sale cattle are on the Complete Herd Health Program and will be given Ivermectin prior to sale day. DELIVERY ON BULLS: We will deliver free within a 300 mile radius on single purchases over $4000.00. If you bring your own trailer to the sale and pick up cattle we will refund $100.00 on every purchase up to a maximum of $300.00. Every assistance given in the arranging of shipping and delivery of your purchases. Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. All U.S. purchases will be delivered to our closest border crossing unless other arrangements are made with consignors. No delivery on commercial lots. SEMEN: Pahl Livestock reserves the right to collect semen from any bull sold through the sale. Any semen collected will be at Pahl’s expense and buyers convenience. Any semen collected will be for Pahl Livestock use only. WINTERING PROGRAM: Again this year, bulls will be wintered free of charge until March 15, 2024. Bulls stored after that date will be charged $2.00 per day. This wintering fee must be paid upon delivery or pickup. All bulls wintered must be insured and will be delivered after March 15, at Pahl Livestock’s convenience. WHOLE HERD HEALTH THERE ARE 5 KEY COMPONENTS TO THE HEALTH AND MANAGEMENT PROGRAM: · Nutrition · Animal Care and Welfare · Disease Prevention · Breeding Soundness · Tracking Sale Bull Progeny Performance BULL AND HEIFER NUTRITION All pre-weaned calves are raised on mama’s milk and lush green grass. No supplemental creep is needed or provided. After weaning they are introduced to a fibrous total mixed ration comprised of chopped hay, a textured grain ration, and an all-natural vitamin supplement. This diet is more than adequate for maintaining growth and performance and superior for rumen, hoof and reproductive health. ANIMAL CARE AND WELFARE All the animals (not just the cattle) at Pahl Livestock are managed and handled with the utmost of care. The cattle are comingled in small groups in large spacious paddocks that have 360 degree wind protection and a large amount of slope so that there is always a dry area to stand or lay down. Straw bedding is abundant and always fresh. Cattle are always handled with ease, but when necessary (in the event of injury or lameness) an analgesic medication (Meloxican) is administered to help lessen the pain.
BREEDING SOUNDNESS EXAMINATION Every bull for sale will have been evaluated for the following criteria: · Physical Examination · Soundness of structure and movement · Palpate testis, epididymis and internal sex glands · Scrotal Circumference · Minimum requirements must be met or no further evaluation is performed · Examination of the Penis · Verify each bull can protrude and there are no warts or defects of the penis · Sperm Motility and Morphology · Verify sufficient gross and individual motility and sperm morphology
DISEASE PREVENTION Pahl Livestock follows a detailed vaccination program to help ensure that the cattle stay healthy and continue to thirve on the farm and carry this forward onto their new homes. Below is a list of the antigens vaccinated against and the associated product names used.
The bull must pass all the above criteria to be considered a satisfactory breeder. If the bull passes all of the above criteria, but falls just below the minimum threshold for sperm morphology (70%), he is considered to be a “decision deferred” breeder. Approximately 40% of all bulls will fail to produce an adequate semen sample at 11 mo. of age, 30% at 12 mo., 5% at 16 mo. This classification of bulls means that they are either prepubertal or stressed, but are showing sufficient signs of improvement and will likely be satisfactory soon when the days get longer and the grass is greener. Any Decision Deferred bulls offered for sale will be announced at sale time and none of these bulls will be delivered until they achieve satisfactory semen status.

GLOSSARY OF SALE INFORMATION EPD ABBREVIATIONS: EPDS are a powerful tool that is available for making genetic progress. EPDs incorporate the performance of the individual along with the performance of all its relatives. CE: Calving ease. The higher number predicts more calving ease. BW: Birth. A lower EPD predicts more calving ease. WW: Weaning. Higher weaning EPDs predict higher weaning weights. MILK: Milk EPD should be used to predict to the milking ability of the daughters of the bull in question. Higher milk EPDs project more milk. REA: Rib Eye Area in square inches. Describes marbling potential of calves expressed as difference in grade score.
MARB: Marbling. Describes marbling potential of calves expressed as difference in grade score. FOOT EPD: is expressed in units of both Claw and Angle based on a foot that is a 45 degree angle at the pasture joint with appropriate toe length and the claw set has toes that are symmetrical, even and properly spaced. The lower EPD being more favourable. GENOMIC PERCENTAGES: Genomic EPD’s are the best estimate of an animal’s genetic value as a parent combining all available sources of information. Genomics permit higher prediction accuracies for younger animals and characterizes genetics for traits where it’s difficult to measure the phenotype. The top 20% of any trait will be better than the bottom 80%.

RAISING BULLS AT PAHL LIVESTOCK Bulls here are raised strictly with natural growth and longevity in mind. Lots of bulls are fed in large pens, but ours are fed in an approximately 50 acre pen with the feed and the water as far apart as they can be, forcing the bulls to walk miles a day. They are fed a textured grain ration designed for skeletal growth and development, as well as a custom mineral to help with
fertility, and free choice dry hay. The whole sale group is fed in two pens letting the better bulls rise to the top. Bulls are then sorted and the bottom is culled after each weigh date and again in September before the sale for temperament. There are no bulls sold from this pen before the sale. These bulls are raised to be sound and guaranteed breeders.

40K Kingdom has been one of my favourites since he was a calf. He is long, thick, and deep, red right to his toes, and big goggle eyes. He was ranked #4 at weaning and #2 as a yearling. 28C is another one of our top cows with a son at Clint and Daryl Brost’s, a daughter at McKenzie Herefords and she is also the grandma of 26K.
45K Knockdown is a thick, well put together Dakar son with a big teardrop under one eye. Have a look at him on sale day.
COMMERCIAL HEIFERS First and second cross Angus/Hereford heifers. We don’t keep any of these so they are our best. Bred July 4 - July 26 (one cycle) to easy calving Black Angus bulls. Preg checked safe in calf.
