Cattlewomen, Cattlemen, and Cattlekids, it is with great pride and excitement that we welcome you to the

2017 edition of The Black Label. This is quite possibly one of the most talented sets of Open and Bred cattle to sell this fall. The offering is represented by some of the best breeding programs in the country backed by some of the most talented and customer service oriented operators in the business.

In writing these opening/ inviting sale letters, most of us try to embellish and tell you how good our cattle are, but I’ve always thought that actions and results speak louder than words. Our actions and results, as a cohesive group of breeders, speaks volumes. In the last 17 years, members of this offering have been responsible for over 50 breed champions or reserves at Texas Majors, not jackpots, Majors like Ft Worth, San Antonio, San Angelo, Austin, and Houston. At the TJSSA Summer Futurity we have had multiple Champions and top ten finishers.

On a national scene, we have made our presence known over the last 6 years with 1 Champion, 2 reserves, and multiple top 20 finishers in both the Purebred and Percentage shows. The thing we are most proud of though is that our customers have been very successful in the Bred and Owned show with 2 Champions and 2 Reserve Bred and Owned. That last statement alone should be explanatory enough about the programs that are represented in this offering.

We are making The Black Label an event to attend this year with a 5 p.m. start time, dinner and the Jeremy Steding band to follow. The preceding paragraph talks a lot about the success of the cattle on the tan bark, but that would not be possible if each breeder wasn’t as skilled or focused on making the right kind of cattle. To go win a State Fair or a Texas Major it comes down to the fundamental evaluation based on phenotype, and while opinions and philosophies may differ from one evaluator to the next, a good one will win most of the time. Each genetic contributor to this sale offering has been successful on the winning side and has the utmost level of understanding what it takes and the kind of cattle it takes to make the end result the shade of purple. The dynamic changes when you go to compete on a national scene like the AJSA Summer Classic, Kansas City, Louisville, and Denver due to the implementation of EPDs. It’s not a new thing but the ASA, specifically, has done their best to impose the ideas of the direction they think, we as breeders, should go. But, the problem is that they have placed nearly their entire emphasis on an index known as API. The ASA has done such a great job of promoting their trademarked All Purpose Index API is all new people to the breed or the hobby breeders concern them selves with, however that there is so much more that matters on that sheet of paper to the industry other than API. We believe in a balanced approach of not chasing the extremes of the statistical unknown but rather stay grounded to the average. ALL EPDs can improve with ONE straw of semen! EPDs are a selection tool, but they have also been used to the hilt in marketing. After going to a recent Angus dispersal loaded with sound, good footed cattle, that were low maintenance, big calf raising kind, that were good looking, but average or less on paper, those cattle averaged over $4200 and were praised for their kind by everyone in attendance. The lesson learned is that there is a demand for good cattle and people of multiple breeds are frustrated with the paper approach.

Not saying that we are against EPDs, we just like them in moderation when we need them and use the basics like calving ease, birth weight, and growth predictors in our selections.

In the midst of focusing on the future, we must not forget successes of the past. This sums up this mating to a tee! In the spring of 2016 The Hunt sale was led off by a pair of full sisters to this talented young lady. Those two Hammer daughters out of the Hoffman Ranch donor, 709T, went on to find a tremendous amount of success when they hit the Texas Major scene. This past spring the Walter Family experienced a horrific Tornado. The storm wiped away each and every piece of infrastructure the ranch had. The cowherd and their home salvaged, but the years of pride and sweat equity were destroyed. So, with a resilient mind and attitude Kyle and his family have spent their summer rebuilding their empire in Western Oklahoma. They have been in our thoughts and prayers throughout this journey.

Hurricane Harvey is no stranger to the news. In fact, this Hurricane season will go down as maybe the most destructive in our nation’s history with projected losses in the hundreds of billions of dollars. Catastrophic may not be grim enough to describe what those people are experiencing in southeast Texas and Florida. Southern Jewell would have experienced nearly a month without power at the ranch and Shannon’s family’s home had significant flood damage, but again these families too will come out on top on the other end. There’s a lot to clean up and rebuild but the most important thing is that through all of this there was no loss of life. Our hearts go out to the families of Southern Jewel during their recovery efforts.

Times and situations such as these makes one think if all this other stuff truly matters at the end of the day. It places more value on family and strengthening that family bond and relationship…
