Welcome

Welcome to the Missouri Simmental Association: The Missouri Simmental Association’s primary objectives are the development and promotion of the Simmental breed of cattle in the state of Missouri. It is believed that the Simmental breed can make an important contribution to the improvement of the cattle industry in Missouri. The Association is open to all the cattle breeders who are members of the American Simmental Association and who are engaged in a supervised upgrading program. It is the intention of the Association to maintain high breeding standards with emphasis placed on production and quality. History of the Simmental Breed: Simmental is among the oldest and most widely distributed of all breeds of cattle in the world. Known for its versatility, the Simmental breed of cattle originated in the valleys of the Simme River in the Bernese Oberland of western Switzerland. Historically used for dairy, beef and draught animals, Simmental cattle in the early days were highly sought because of their rapid growth development, outstanding production of milk, butter and cheese in addition to meat. The breed is known as “Fleckvieh” in Germany and many other European Countries. Simmental cattle are “Montbeliard” and “Pie Rouge” in France, and “Pezzata Rossa” in Italy. In 1967, Travers Smith imported the famed bull “Parisien” to Canada from France. Semen from that bull was introduced into the United States that same year, with the first half-blood Simmental calf born in the U.S. in February of 1968. The American Simmental Association was formed in October of that same year. The upgrading of Simmental cattle in the United States has introduced a wide range of colors to the breed. Simmentals were originally red and white or gold and white. Today, all colors and all color patterns are accepted within the American Simmental Association. A polled gene has been established in the breed. Simmental cattle are well known for their docility and fertility. Simmental cows are excellent mothers, exceptionally easy calvers and above average milkers. Simmental beef is tender, high yielding and highly palatable.

Improving Pregnancy Rates in Beef Heifers with Split-time AI DIVISION OF ANIMAL SCIENCES | UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI

Over the past six years research at the University of Missouri tested the hypothesis that pregnancy rates in beef heifers after fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) may be improved by delaying insemination of heifers that have not expressed estrus prior to the standard FTAI time. A series of studies were designed which showed that split-time artificial insemination (STAI) following administration of the 14-day CIDRPG protocol allowed heifers to be managed based on estrous response at the time of insemination and that pregnancy rates were improved as much as 8% compared to FTAI. The observed increase in AI pregnancy rate was attributed to the delayed AI of non-estrous heifers compared to heifers that failed to exhibit estrus and that were inseminated at the standard time. Pregnancy rates to AI for non-estrous heifers were 15% higher among heifers assigned to the split-time versus fixed-time treatment, while AI pregnancy rates of estrous heifers did not differ by treatment. In STAI, insemination is delayed for non-estrous females by 20 to 24 hours, whereas in FTAI, all heifers are inseminated at a single time. Experiments were later conducted to evaluate the optimal timing of GnRH administration when using STAI. Results from these studies clearly demonstrated that administration of GnRH was not required for heifers that exhibit estrus prior to AI, and that administration of GnRH to heifers that fail to exhibit estrus by 66 hours could be delayed to 90 hours, concurrent with insemination. This work confirmed that higher pregnancy rates resulting from STAI compared to FTAI are due primarily to higher estrous response rates prior to insemination. Despite the high overall estrous response that is observed in heifers when split-time AI is practiced, a percentage of heifers fail to exhibit estrus prior to 90 hours after PG. Pregnancy rates resulting from AI are generally reduced among these heifers compared with those that exhibit estrus, despite the fact GnRH is routinely administered concurrent with AI.

Treatment day

Figure 1. The 14-day CIDR-PG protocol for heifers with split-time AI (Bishop et al., 2017; Thomas et al., 2016).

More recently, an experiment was designed to evaluate pregnancy rates resulting from fixed-time or split-time artificial insemination among beef heifers following administration of the 14-day melengestrol acetate (MGA) prostaglandin F2α protocol. Heifers were fed MGA (0.5 mg per animal per day) in a 4 pound grain carrier for 14 days. Prostaglandin F2α was administered 19 days after MGA withdrawal. Estrus detection aids (Estrotect®) were applied at PG administration. Estrous status was recorded at 72 hours after PG for heifers assigned to FTAI, and 72 and 96 hours after PG for heifers assigned to STAI. Heifers assigned to FTAI were inseminated 72 hours after PG and GnRH was administered at AI. Heifers were inseminated in the STAI treatment that exhibited estrus by 72 hours after PG; however AI was postponed until 96 hours for heifers that were non-estrus at 72 hours. Only heifers that failed to exhibit estrus by 96 hours were administered GnRH at AI. Estrous response 72 hours after PG did not differ between treatments; however total estrous response was higher among heifers assigned to STAI (88%, STAI; 72%, FTAI). Pregnancy rates resulting from AI were 9% greater for heifers assigned to STAI compared to FTAI. These data now demonstrate the potential for improved pregnancy rates in beef heifers when STAI is used following administration of the MGA-PG protocol.

Using estrus detection aids to facilitate split-time AI. To identify animals that have not expressed estrus, Estrotect® estrus detection aids can be applied at the time of the final PG administration. Estrotect® patches are designed with a scratch-off coating that is removed progressively as an estrous animal stands to be mounted. Because of this design, producers can have a high degree of confidence about the estrus status of females. When using split-time AI, an animal is considered as having expressed estrus when over 50% of the scratch-off coating has been removed from the Estrotect® patch. Missouri Simmental Directory
