Our God is an awesome God. He reigns from Heaven above With wisdom, power and love Our God is an awesome God The declaration to mighty God through this song is something every human needs to experience! Personally to know that God exists and is totally in control is truly a beautiful life fulfilling desire that takes away the worries and concerns … like Covid 19! True, it exists, but not to the point of wearing one down through “what if ”, fear and a sense of dread. To know God intimately is a desire that is established within very human being and to finally know the truth will set your heart and mind at rest. Unfortunately, I say unfortunately, because God gives us all sovereignty we can do and choose whatever we think even though our heart troubles us over some decisions that we make, still God has to honour our choices … even if they are detrimental to our wellbeing! That’s why God is awesome, He gives you responsibility for your life choices, He will never coerce you into loving Him in any way whatsoever, he has done so much for you, these blessings make you realise that you don’t need a lot of money or prestige, famous or poor, they all fade away from the glory of knowing God through His Son Jesus Christ. I’m not talking about church attendance or good works, effort to strive and show God how good you are, years of Sunday services without a personal relationship with this awesome God is a waste of effort even if you’re doing good chances are you’re not! Only God is good, but! We too can begin a journey with Him right up to and beyond our death knowing full well that our God is an awesome God and He reigns … hopefully over your life. We need this personal relationship that goes from strength to strength with Jesus … nobody else … nobody else can save you for eternity! Only Jesus can! It really is so easy to discover for yourself that by asking Jesus to be Lord of your life you will experience a new found freedom and joy and peace that surpasses all understanding, it will be truly awesome. True that the things of earth, life and new decisions that are enforced upon us, can create fear or control or doubts about God, but His peace He has given us and just that alone with Jesus will get us through this life till the next eternal one. Why? Because our God is an awesome God and He reigns in power and victory over everything. Come Lord Jesus Ted Reeves, Patea

When will our good summer weather arrive? Our main competitions played in December have been played with 30 to 40 knot westerlies prevailing. Patea Cup: The players involved for the 18 hole nett playoff for the Patea Cup were Nick Williams, Robert Bourke, Ray Finlay, Willie Harris and Cyril Faiers. After nine holes the scores were very even Cyril scoring 41 Robert and Nick 45 and Ray and Willie 47. Ray made a break on the group with pars on the 12th to 14th holes and even though he played the last four holes poorly into the very strong westerly Ray held on by 1.5 shots scoring a nett 74 to win the Patea Cup for the second successive year. Second was Cyril scoring a nett 75.5. Third was Willie scoring a nett 77. Forth was Robert scoring a nett 77.5 and Nicks disaster hole on the 16th left him in 5th place scoring a nett 80. Closed Xmas Hamper: The closed Xmas hamper was played on the 12th December and once again the westerly was brutal and made scoring difficult. We had a 10.30am shotgun start. Results were: 1st Nett Total Field W Harris 72 1st Gross Total Field D Faiers 74 Ladies 1st Stableford W Finlay 34 on countback Ladies 2nd Stableford E Gibbs 34 Ladies 3rd Stableford V Bourke 28 Men div 1 1st Stableford K Cameron 34 Men div 1 2nd Stableford N Edgcombe 33 on countback Men div 1 3rd Stableford D Cole 33 Men div 1 4th Stableford C Whanau 31 Men div 1 5th Stableford P Cassidy 30 Men div 2 1st Stableford W Cole 31 on countback Men div 2 2nd Stableford P Te Ngahue 31 Men div 2 3rd Stableford R Finlay 30 on countback Men div 2 4th Stableford J Newlove 30 Men div 2 5th Stableford J Cole 29 The Accuracy prizes were sponsored by our Patron Janice Huston. Thank you for the large gift packs. 1st Green - K Cameron, 7th Green - V Bourke, 10th Green - C Faiers, 15th Green - J Bright. Twos: E Gibbs, C Faiers, G Gibbs Before prize giving members enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea. Skinners were on the programme next but were abandoned due to poor weather and cards were played instead. The raffles were drawn. A thank you to Jim Fairweather for selling all the raffles. There were 18 draws. We had a delicious barbeque tea and thanks to Clayton Hori for cooking the steaks. The member’s salads and desserts were also delicious. Thank you all. The annual prize giving followed the barbeque tea. Shootout Number Two: The second shootout was played on Saturday 19th December and playing conditions were better than previous weeks. Willie was faulty so we did not play hole number 1. On the second hole a chip off was required and Ray eliminated Verna. On the 3rd hole a putt off was required and Ray eliminated Nick. On the 4th hole a chip off was required and Gerald eliminated Steve. On the 5th hole Cyril was the only player with a nett 5 so he was eliminated. On the 6th hole a long putt off was required and Gerald eliminated Robert. On the 7th hole some really good golf shots were played. Ray chipped from behind the green for a gimmie par. Gerald chipped on from half way down the hill and sunk a 15 foot putt for par and both Roger and Neil were on the green and made regulation pars so a chip off was required and Ray finally made a mistake and was eliminated. On the 8th hole Gerald made a nett six and was eliminated so the final two players were Neil and Roger. Roger’s good chip and putt for a nett four gave him a 1 shot victory over Neil. Well done Roger. All that practice on the good southern golf courses finally paid off. Business House Golf: Business house golf will start on Thursday 28th January 2021 so start organizing your teams. Play will be 6 weeks in succession. Enter your teams on the starting sheet in the clubhouse or contact Ray Finlay 273 8335 or Kath Honeyfield 273 8092. Let’s start 2021 with a good number of team entries. Flying Nine: Flying Nine will re-start on 7th January 2021. Visitors and non-golfers are welcome. Come along and give golf a go. Roger Rei 20th Memorial Open Golf Tournament: This tournament will be played on Saturday 23rd January 2021. Book your annual leave and your sober driver. There will be a live band after prize giving. Just Us from New Plymouth. Last year’s gross winner Sam Jones has confirmed his entry and there will be plenty of low handicap golfers trying to win the $500-00 gross prize. We have once again had a very good response from our sponsors so the total prize table will be over $4000-00. Book early to get your preferred tee time. Taranaki Speedgolf Challenge: Bernie Smith, Reeve Barnett, Mick McBeth and world No1 speedgolfer Jamie Reid will be playing speed golf over 18 holes at Patea on Friday 29th January 2021. They will be playing 18 courses in Taranaki over 2 days to raise funds for Kidney Kids New Zealand. Visitors are welcome. Come along and support this fundraising event and make a small donation. You may like the concept of speed golf and perhaps get something new happening in Patea. Taranaki Men’s Handicap Pennants: Our club has re-entered this competition for 2021 so members please put your names on the sheet provided in the clubhouse. New Membership Promotion: You can become a member of the Patea Golf Club for only $75. This is all you have to pay for your first year of golf. Conditions apply. Safety concerns as Kiwis flock to water After a difficult year New Zealanders will be keen to hit the beaches, lakes and rivers this holiday season and the predicted numbers have water safety advocates on edge. “While we want everyone to enjoy the summer break we need everyone to take some personal responsibility for their safety this summer,” says Water Safety New Zealand spokesperson Sheridan Bruce. “We want zero drowning fatalities over the Christmas and New Year holiday and everyone to think about water safety, “says Bruce, “people just need to remember some key water safety rules". * Be prepared – check the weather, your gear and the water conditions * Never go into, on or near the water alone – who will help you if something goes wrong? * Look after yourself and others - constant active adult supervision of babies and toddlers at all times around water * Know the risks and know your limits * Check pool gates and latches are in good working order * Empty paddling pools after use * Get local knowledge and check the forecast * If in doubt, don’t go out * Avoid drugs and alcohol around water

• Look after yourself and your whānau this festive season and summer holidays; take any opportunity to rest and enjoy a break. We all need a bit of support from time-to-time, and if you or someone you know is struggling, there is free help available. Free call or text 1737 any time, 24 hours a day. You can also call Lifeline on 0800 543354 or text HELP to 4357. • If you are unwell, stay at home. • Do not travel or take part in events or activities if you are unwell. • If you become unwell while on holiday, contact Healthline (0800 611 116) or your health professional who can advise whether you should be tested. If you are advised to get a test, please do so; do not wait until you get home to get tested. • Testing services will be available throughout the Christmas, New Year and holiday period. If you need to get a test in Taranaki call 027 380 1433. Check here for times and locations. • Remember to scan or sign into places using the NZ COVID Tracer app or keep a record of where you’ve been. This is especially important when on holiday because you may not remember all the locations you have visited. • Consider packing a kit that contains hand sanitiser, a mask, and cleaning products. • Maintain good hygiene practices, including washing and drying your hands, or use hand sanitiser if unable to wash your hands, cough or sneeze into your elbow and regularly clean ‘high touch’ surfaces and objects. • Maintain physical distancing when out and about especially in crowded spaces and places. • Get into the habit of carrying a mask or face covering at all times so that you can use it when needed. • If you’re hosting an event, please don’t pressure friends and whānau to attend if they’re feeling unwell. Instead, encourage them to stay at home and call Healthline or a health professional for advice. • Encouraging everyone on arrival to wash and dry their hands is one of the easiest ways to keep people safe. Soap kills the virus by bursting its protective bubble. • Please keep a note of all of your visitors, especially if you’re hosting a big crowd. If needed later, this will make contact tracing faster and easier and help prevent the further spread of COVID-19.
