The Hunter Shaw Clock
The 92 year old clock on top of the Hunter Shaw Building is getting some much needed maintenance from two clever clock men from Opunake - Andrew Hornblow and Len Pentelow, with help from some dedicated Patea people. Our Patea maintenance Officer Darryl Wereta, has been looking after the clock since Brian Headley died in June 2020. Terry Tamakehu has also worked on the clock with Brian Headley in the past and is continuing to be the local maintenance man when it needs attention.
There are a couple of things that still need to be done to ensure the clock is running as it should as it approaches its 100th birthday. It has four clock faces in the clock tower, which all tell the same time, although for many years only 3 faces are intact and working. The clock that faces the back of the building has laid on the floor of the clock tower in pieces, and the white glass on the front face was replaced with grey frosted glass a long time ago. All going to plan these will soon be repaired with the help of the Patea Community Board. The four clock faces should all have white milky glass in the large circular faces to allow the light to shine through from inside at night. Kelsen's Glass with replace the broken and incorrect clock faces, and a new led light will be installed to illuminate it. Gareth Read has been the electrical advisor for the team, and when needed will setup a system so the clock can be reset from below, rather than having to climb up into the ceiling. This will make it easier for re-setting for daylight saving etc.
The Hunter Shaw clock system is a 'Synchronome', made in England and used extensively in Coal mines, Railway Stations, Factories etc. Its very robust construction means if maintained it will run well for ever. The clock is powered by magnets and gravity. It has a ‘master’ clock on the wall in the main area of the building. The four clock faces in the tower are known as ‘slaves’ to the master clock. Any large earthquakes can affect the clock, basically throwing its magnets off balance, so it is likely to stop or lose time.
Andrew Hornblow gave me a bit of background into his history with clocks: ‘my background is from 'cadet government department' communications technician with the old government railways where we used to look after the station clocks, in my case Palmerston North back in 1970's. We had similar type of clocks a 'Gents' system used in most government departments around New Zealand. One technician had to drive Palmerston North, Woodville, Fielding and back to reset the clocks on our patch in the wee small hours for daylight saving. My father got a 'Synchronome' clock from a Palmerston North Department Store fire way back. This one I still have and look after at home. You have to be a bit tolerant of the 'clunk' that resonates through the house in the wee small hours. So, I’d already had some experience with looking after and 'regulating' when I met Len and the Opunake LibraryPlus installed the old power station Synchronome Master clock there’.
Robert Northcott worked hard to get the weathervane on top of the clock tower installed. When the Hunter Shaw building was constructed in 1930 a steel weathervane was pride of place on top of the clock tower, it perished in the elements over the years, so a replica was made and finishes off the heritage building very well. The Hunter Shaw building was earthquake strengthened in 2019 and is now a well used community facility.

Anticipation building for Free, Waverley Summer Christmas Jam Community Event
There’s nothing better than live music on a summer evening. The Wanganui Insurance Brokers Waverley Summer Christmas Jam will bring you just that and more! This free, community event is hosted by the award winning and talented Frankie Stevens, and includes special guests such as the Pātea Māori Club, Diamond Divas, Paul Saker Norrish, Darren Wallace and Sophie Toyne. Frankie has spot prizes to give away, thanks to our wonderful sponsors and Sport Taranaki have some games for the kids to play.
“It was our dream to bring an event like this to Waverley. We really wanted to bring people together and celebrate our community,” Vicki Koubaridis said. In 2019 Vicki and Maria Ferris organised a successful, smaller scale Christmas event at Gully Park in Waverley. It was well attended and they knew that the event had the potential to be even bigger. “With the support of some amazing sponsors and funding from the South Taranaki District Council, the dream is now a reality. We can’t wait to see everyone come together at the Waverley Summer Christmas Jam, after such a tough few years. It’s going to be awesome!”
The event committee is Vicki Koubaridis , Maria Ferris, Megan Buchanan, Marianne Archibald, Lillie Luff, and Frankie Stevens and they hope to build on this event and create an annual Waverley celebration. The committee is very thankful to the generous local businesses and community organisations that have contributed to the event and encourages everyone to shop local, eat local, spend local, and enjoy supporting our sponsors’ businesses.
Leading up to the event, there will be announcements about performers, sponsors, and great prizes you can win. These will be made over Facebook and Instagram. Search for ‘Waverley Summer Christmas Jam’, like the pages and be in to win!
The team looks forward to seeing you and your family on Saturday 26th November from 4pm until 8pm at Waverley Dallison Park for a wonderful, festive evening.
If you have any questions, want to be a much loved sponsor, have a food truck and want to join in, or have any other ideas, please contact us at wavsumjam@gmail.com

A Christian Word
Life is a bit like the postie, you need to check the letter box & see what’s been delivered! Sometimes good news, other times a bill!! Sometimes a bit of news that gasps at the contents. That’s life, I guess! We really only want good news or a fat cheque from a rich Aunty! Sadly though, this does not always happen, life does deliver bad news, we're not too well prepared for it most times, especially the ones in from left field. Jesus was always encouraging His disciples to be of good cheer, building them up into the knowledge that He, Jesus, is in complete control, nothing is a surprise to Him, but even though some sad news comes, if we look to Him & not to our circumstances, which, honestly is not easy for a start!
But when we do look to Jesus, these trials are a lot easier to manage, it is such a comfort to know that even through the bad times, Jesus is always there with us, never will He leave us nor forsake us, we will never be abandoned, perhaps some close person may walk away, Jesus never will! That has to be the most comforting assurance anyone can have during trials & tribulation! Some may question why God allows these things to happen to us, why didn’t He stop it? I have thought this as well, purely to help me to better understand God, but note; not His ways! My thinking now as a man of God is that, if all the people on this planet were lovingly & obediently following Jesus as the Christ, I believe there would be very little of the pain & loss etc. we are experiencing today.
Sounds too good to be true! The reality is it can be, you get to choose Jesus Christ as your Savior, this is an indication of how much God loves you, because He will never force, coerce or manipulate you into His desire for you to trust Him. That kinda explains all the pain in the world today, we have chosen to ignore God’s help & go our own ways & we are paying a heavy toll because of it!!
Today is the day of your salvation, don’t keep making life so hard for yourself, get Jesus – get life!! Eternal.
Come Lord Jesus - Ted Reeves, Patea

This month the tamariki have been loving our new mud kitchen and family play corner kitchen. We were granted the money to purchase these from Four Regions Trust. These items have supported lots of social skill learning, use of imagination and acting out real life play. The sandpit has been a busy area of play, not only with the mud kitchen but lots of digging of rivers and making volcanos.
On the 15th of November we will have a stall at Waverley A&P show, come and meet our friendly teaching team and hear more about what we get up to at Kindergarten.

The Whenuakura Hotel
The Whenuakura Hotel was built in 1871 by Elisha James Baynton, on the south side of the Whenuakura River. Elisha was born in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia in 1843 and came to New Zealand in the late 1860’s. As well as running the Hotel, Elisha was the ‘ferryman’ responsible for getting travellers across the Whenuakura river in a punt or canoes. The Pātea river had Alfred Wood as the ferryman for around ten years, until the first Pātea bridge was built in 1874 (the current Pātea Bridge is the 3rd one). The Whenuakura bridge was also completed in 1874 by Captain Low. From 1 October 1873 until 1875 Elisha also operated a Post Office out of the Whenuakura Hotel. Elisha was a single man at this time and returned to Tasmania when he gave up the lease of the Hotel. There he married Mary Ann Lucas, they had three children and remained in Hobart for the rest of their lives.
In September 1875, Mr Thomas Lloyd took over as
proprietor of the Whenuakura Hotel. He had built the Kakaramea Hotel a few months earlier with Arthur Gibson. The new bridge over the Whenuakura River meant there was no need to ferry people across the river, but the Hotel was busier than ever. The stage coach that ran on a regular basis from Whanganui to New Plymouth stopped at the Hotel for refreshments or accommodation. Before the bridge was built, it would leave passengers at the Hotel to be met on the other side of the river by another mode of transport to continue their journey north. Stables and paddocks for horses were also available next to the hotel.
The location of the Hotel was practical in regard to the river, but it was also imposing, being so close to Whenuakura Marae and urupa. Considering that three years before the Hotel was built the Land Wars were raging in the area. Oika redoubt had been constructed on the hill directly above the Hotel (first position) in 1868, and the zig zag trenches are still there today. Kereopa spent years trying to retain Ngarauru land in the area and is mentioned in several newspaper articles involved in an incident where all the Hotel windows were broken. Census details from 1881 show there were 45 people living at Whenuakura Marae, 23 male and 22 female.
In 1876 the Hotel was moved across the bridge to the north side of the river and placed on the lefthand side of the road heading north. An amazing feat for those times. The Patea Mail 23 August 1876 reports: ‘At the present time, it is considered no great feat to move a house in its entirety any distance on solid ground, even if the route to be transversed is somewhat hilly, but it is not every day that we hear of a building, all standing, crossing a bridge on its way to a future site. Such was, however, the case at Whenuakura on Monday last, when the hotel there, occupied by Mr Lloyd bodily li ed it from its late location to this side of the river, and was safely placed in its intended position there. e removal was e ected not only cleverly and ingeniously, but most expeditiously, and the bridge was got over in an admirable manner, tra c being but a very short time interrupted by its passage. e bridge itself must be a well-built structure to carry such an unlooked for weight, without sustaining the slightest injury. Travellers who passed up and had their glass of ale in the hotel on one side of the river on Sunday, could have called there on Monday at the other side of the stream and similarly refreshed themselves. e building is a good size and the task to so move it was not easy. Great credit is due to Mr Strachan for the manner in which he executed it'.
By December 1876 W R Prosser took over as proprietor. Charles Dixon Hawkins and his wife Elizabeth were running the Hotel in May 1878. Mr Hopeful Gibbons bought the Whenuakura Hotel in the early 1880's and owned it until the late 1890's - leasing it out throughout that time. Mr John Hunter was proprietor from March 1881. William Gadsby and Jane Gadsby settled in Whenuakura on a farm called ‘Elslea’, in partnership with William Wilson in the early 1880’s. In mid 1885 William and Jane took over the lease of the Whenuakura Hotel. William was a skilled blade shearer and travelled the district doing this, while Jane ran the Hotel. On 27 December 1891 Jane was killed aged 38 when her gig over-turned on the Whenuakura hill, on her return from Pātea, leaving behind seven children. William moved to a farm at Kakaramea after his wife’s death and the lease of the Hotel was taken over by Charles and Mary Ann Hilliar.
The Hilliar family in front of the Whenuakura Hotel in the 1890’s.
It is during the time the Hilliar’s were proprietors that the photo printed here was taken of them in front of the Hotel. To date this is the only photo in existence of this fantastic piece of our local history. It was given to Aotea Utanganui Museum after being saved from a skip bin. Charles and Mary Ann had emigrated with their three children from Somerset England on 30 November 1878 aboard the ship 'Warwick' arriving in Wellington on 26 February 1879. They had five more children in New Zealand. Mary Ann Hilliar ran the Hotel on her own

Charles worked on a neighbouring farm. Mary Ann would have been about 45 yrs old when this photo was taken in the mid 1890’s. I think she is the woman in the black
with her hands on the shoulders of her two youngest daughters; Annie and Lily. The younger woman holding the baby may be a friend of the family or one of the older Hilliar
with her child. The young boy standing next to them could be Edward Hilliar. The other smaller boy could be Master Stretch (he was cared for by the Hilliar’s). I’m unsure which one is Charles Hilliar. Their youngest daughter Lily Hilliar married Daniel MacDonald, their daughter Elizabeth married James Kiihfuss, whose descendants still live in the Whenuakura district.
This article is from the Wanganui Chronicle 4 Aug 1894 describes the scene at Whenuakura Hotel when the Hilliar’s owned it: 'Some three years ago, having by dint of hard work, put away su cient for the purpose, they acquired the lease of the hotel in question which boasts of seven or eight thoroughly clean and airy bedrooms, with sitting rooms etc. to match. A very large paddock some acre in extent is always available for the accommodation of stock. Mr Hilliar troubles himself very little with the management of the hotel and has for years past e ectively helped Mr John Hair on his run. Born in the same village, (Carlton Makerill) in Somersetshire, Mr and Mrs Hilliar have been married for 22 years and have a family of ve girls and two boys. As a house of call the Whenuakura Hotel is an exceptionally pleasant one and one where cleanliness and comfort hold sway’.
When the Hilliar’s gave up the lease in June 1896, (John O’Brien took it over) they took over the Whangaehu Hotel under Mary Ann's name. In 1903 business ceased in this quaint Hotel and the license was transfered to the Whangamomonga Hotel under the ownership of Frederick Calgher. The building was sold at auction to Mr A Dickie and used as a house. It contained 12 rooms, stables and outbuildings. Unsure when the Whenuakura Hotel was demolished, but it served its purpose well in the 32 years it was in existence.

By–Elections Needed for Two Wards
Two by-elections are now required for South Taranaki District Council positions following the withdrawal of Joanne Peacock from the Pātea Community Board.
Joanne, who was the third highest polling candidate for the Pātea Community Board says she was extremely disappointed to have to withdraw, but due to unforeseen circumstances and work commitments meant she would no longer be able to give the role the time and dedication it warrants, which is not fair on the other board members or the community in general.
Under the Local Electoral Act a by-election must be held to fill the vacant position, rather than simply moving to the next highest polling candidate.
The other by-election is for a Te Hāwera general ward Councillor position.
Nominations for both positions will open on Thursday 24 November and close on 22 December. Voting will begin on 26 January 2023 and close on Friday noon 17 February 2023.
Organist David Dobson
David is currently one of the musicians regularly providing liturgical music in the Catholic Parish of St Francis of Assisi, Ohariu. He also plays for Mass (1st and 5th Sundays) at St Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Island Bay, and for services at the First Church of Christ Scientist, Wellington. The opportunity for ecumenical and musical partnerships is significant for David, as church music has always played an important part in his life.
David did not present his first solo recital until 2010, after his retirement from full time work. Since then, David has presented numerous organ recitals throughout the lower North Island. Wanganui and Waverley are two of his favourite venues. He is delighted and grateful to be invited back for these 2022 concerts. He says “I try to select programmes of music which draw my audiences to the sounds available through the instrument and which may appeal through their beauty.”
David’s lunch-time concert in Christ Church on Wednesday, Nov 2nd will feature SaintSaens’ delightful 3rd Fantasia for organ and shorter works by the blind French composer, Jean Langlais. In Waverley, next day, David’s programme will include several 17th and 18th Century chorale preludes and more works by Jean Langlais.
Davis is the Immediate Past President of the Wellington Organists’ Association, a Councillor on the N.Z. Organ Preservation Trust and a performer, composer and arranger.
Whenuakura School ‘Growing Personal Excellence’
Welcome to term four! We had a fantastic end to term three with visits from Chris Linders, our Firewise educator, and Taiaroa and Eileen from Patea LibraryPlus who told some magnificent legends about Māori Ātua (gods of phenomena) through the art of oral storytelling.
We recently sat in on an online workshop with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. In this online workshop students got to meet a String Player, Woodwind Player, Brass Player and Timpani/Percussion Player. Each musician gave a demonstration and then answered questions. This online classroom session was a great opportunity to learn about different instruments and expose our learners to this aspect of the arts.
Cricket training has begun and we look forward to competing at the annual cricket tournament hosted by Waverley Primary School. Special thanks to Scott, Matt and Craig who have volunteered to coach our teams.

Waverley Primary School
Principal’s message:
Dear Parents, Caregivers, Whanau and Community Members, The term break went so quickly, it was really nice to get some good weather and have a bit of a recharge after a very busy Term 3 at Waverley Primary School.
On the last day of Term 3 the Waverley Primary School and District Schools Jubilee committee held a Golf tournament Fundraiser. It was a special event to be a part of. I want to thank everyone in the organizing committee for their efforts leading up to the tournament and also on the day. I also want to thank those people that braved the wind and cold and played golf on the day. A special thanks needs to go to everyone who donated prizes and also bid on them at the auction. The committee managed to raise just over $21,000 on the day which is an amazing result.
If you haven’t yet registered for the jubilee please do so. 150 years of schooling in the Waverley district is a very special achievement and is something that should be celebrated by everyone who attended one of the schools.
Term 4 for Waverley Primary School is a very busy one. We have a large number of events to fit into the eight week school term. Events such as School Athletics, Grandparents Day, Pet Day, A&P Show, Senior School Camp, Cluster Cricket Tournament, A Marae Visit, Year 8 School Leavers Dinner, Monday Fun Day and the 2022 final Assembly and Prize Giving. Like I said, a very busy term.
Some of you will already be aware that we are adding an additional classroom to our school in 2023 due to our roll growth. We are currently in the process of filling this staffing vacancy. We are looking forward to next month’s Patea Mail when we can announce to the community who will be joining our staff in our new classroom. We will also at that time announce who will be joining us in a Maternity Leave Position for the 2023 school year. Waverley Primary School is holding their school athletics on Friday 11th November. We are looking forward to seeing some of you there.
Nga mihi,
Tim Marriott - Principal, Waverley Primary School
The students in Matai Hub have been learning to grow vegetables. They have faced many challenges and not everything has been successful. As part of their work, they have discovered how great it feels to share what they have grown with others and how much this has been appreciated by members of our community. The current challenge for the Matai Hub students is ‘A potato in a bucket.’ In pairs the children planted a potato in a bucket and need to care for their plant. At the end of the term they will weigh their yield. Fingers crossed for a great result.
Following last term's lessons with Tennis Whanganui, our senior leaders are now running a round robin tournament with 20 senior students at lunch times. They are in full swing this term! Special thanks to Zach, Thomas, Lily and Theo for their expert organisation and

Patea River Catchment Group
The Patea River Catchment Group was formed 2 years ago under the umbrella of the newly formed Taranaki Catchment Communities. Over this time the foundation has been laid and ideas have been discussed on what this group would focus on in our community. The first project now underway is the ‘Tarere Trapping Project’ – setting up a pest trapping network so we can one day bring the Kiwi back to the Tarere Extension Conservation area above Patea Dam.
The catchment group is working in partnership with Taranaki Kiwi Trust who have helped create a trapping network plan, covering both farmland and bush for below the conservation area. There is already a large amount of work being done by people in our area to trap pests and we aim to complement their work and to fill in the gaps with our trap lines.
When our first trap line was laid in September this was a real milestone as talk and planning had finally become a reality. Our second trap line was laid in the last week of October, with a third hopefully being laid by the time this article goes to print.
We are currently waiting on news of funding applications so we can purchase trap hardware to set the further 8 trap lines that we have planned.
For the month and a half that our first trap line has been in action it has resulted in the following kill tally:
Hedgehog 9 Rat 6
Mustelid (Ferret, Stoat) 4
The Patea River Catchment group is also partnering with Rural Support Trust to run an event focussing on managing compliance while maintain wellbeing. This evening is aimed towards our farming community as they are currently under a lot of pressure with a raft of regulations both coming in and being proposed. This will be held on Tuesday the 15th of November, with a light meal being provided from 6.30pm with speakers starting at 7pm. October was a typical spring month, everything looked good. The greens are lovely and green, the garden looks good, the club house had a clean and everything except the weather was rosy. Rain interrupted a couple of days and at time there was a bitterly cold wind. Nevertheless, we did have a few glorious days which were enjoyed by all. It is nice to see a couple of new faces, welcome to the club. We had our first away visit to Hawera on the 19th. It was a great day, we were treated to a lovely morning tea, lunch afternoon tea and great company. The competition was good, it is always good play other clubs, we had a lot of laughs and look forward to their return visit in February. On Saturday 29th we had our first club competition. More on this in the next newsletter.
We will be having a show raffle and this year there will actually be a show. Anyone wanting tickets can contact the below contacts or any club member. Hole in Ones achieved, September 5 and October 7 including one from a new player - well done.

Waitotara School
Wow, welcome to Term Four! It has certainly come around quickly after an action packed Term Three. We have a full term ahead with Senior camp, a cricket tournament, Tough Kids, Junior Big day Out and practicing for our End of Year Performance.
The Senior Class are heading to Camp Raukawa for 2 nights this week. They are participatingin many activities including archery, rock climbing, building rafts and the flying Kiwi while Juniors will be having a Big Day Out!!
Hotdogs were a hit on the last day of term and we will continue this for two Fridays in each term. Every little bit of fundraising is put towards our students and enhancing their school experience.
Te Ara Huarau is the evaluation approach that the Education Review Office (ERO) is using in our school. This is a developmental approach to evaluate where ERO and our school work together over time rather than one off reviews that happened previously. Te Ara Huarau is used in most English-medium state and state-integrated schools.
ERO maintains a regular review programme to evaluate and report on the education and care of young people in the schools. Our school worked alongside ERO to write our Profile Report, which reflects our strategic goals and a shared evaluation focus on one or more areas that are important to us as we work together to improve outcomes for all our learners. ERO, like us, has a strong focus on equity and excellence. Future reporting will show our progress and achievement towards meeting the goals, we have a Board Assurance Report that shows how we are meeting regulatory and legislative Requirements this has also been published. Our Profile Report is published on ERO’s website (ero.govt.nz/review-reports)
Polly Devane, PrincipalOur last assembly for term 3. Great to see parents join us this morning. Juniors shared their stuffed fish and our poem. Seniors shared their Cross Country stories. Top effort everyone.
Waitotara School Cross Country certificates were given out. We also congratulated Noklair Milton for her winning the mural competition Jenni Corbett will be painting this on the wall at the Waverley Pools.
A big thanks to Sietske at The Sarjeant Art Gallery for helping the Seniors and Juniors make artworks out of clay and painting landscapes. We enjoyed making bowls and chimes and look forward to receiving them once they have been fired.

Kakaramea School ‘Together We Achieve’
We may have enjoyed two weeks of school holidays but the remainder of our time here at Kakaramea School has been busy. This month we highlight some staples on the Kakaramea School calendar: Pet Day and Grandparents and Whanau Day. We also celebrate connecting with our local community at Pariroa Pa and the beginning of an exciting new sustainability garden project at our school for our Enviro Warriors.
Grandparents and Whanau Day
This term our wee school hit the ground running by inviting our children’s whanau, particularly their grandparents, into our school. The day involved a get together where the children showcased their own selection of dancing and singing. Then whanau was invited to check out the children’s classrooms, meet their teachers and peruse some of the children’s work. Lastly, our grandparents and whanau were treated to a shared lunch with our whole
Pariroa Pa visit
On the first day of the term our school and its community were welcomed onto Pariroa Pa. We learnt about the history of the Pa, the local tikanga as well as what life was like living on a marae in earlier times. “As a school, we relished the opportunity to continue to connect, strengthen and establish new relationships,” Kakaramea School principal Shannon O’Brien says. During the visit the children learnt traditional Māori games, enjoyed rakau stick activities and learnt the poi routine to Poi E from several experts who were in the original Patea Maori Club. This was an absolute privilege for all involved.
Pet Day
Just before last term ended Kakaramea School geared up for its 2022 Pet Day. During the day the children showed off their pets, from domestic animals to farm creatures. It was also a chance for us to prepare and showcase some of our best art work for our Hall of Creations, which ran simultaneously inside the classrooms. In this competition our children tested which lamb knew its name the best when called.
