Peace Begins with Me!

On Monday 20 February, a group of runners who are working for Peace visited Patea Area School to share a very simple message – ‘Peace begins with me.’ The 7 runners visited 2 Hawera schools in the morning then ran, carrying a burning Olympic-style torch, from Hawera to Patea. The group met with Year 1 to 6 students and acted out little skits showing peaceful and non-peaceful ways of behaving in simple situations to which children can relate. Tamaiti had great fun doing thumbs up for the peaceful versions, and roared with laughter at the antics in the non-peaceful skits. The children learnt the song and actions for ‘World Harmony Run’, had a little moment feeling the peace in their hearts, and finished with a run with the Peace Torch.

The Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run was founded in 1987 and now in its 16th edition. This year, the New Zealand leg is graced by seven runners representing six different countries. They started in Hamilton on February 13 and running via New Plymouth, Whanganui, and Palmerston North, will finish on Saturday 25 February in Taupo with a closing ceremony involving Taupo mayor David Trewavas. From New Zealand, this year volunteers will take the torch on through Australia and several Asian countries as part of a wider international initiative.

This Peace Torch is passed from country to country and has been held by the late Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, the All Blacks and recently by Pope Francis as well as millions of school children, athletes, Heads of State and Mayors of many cities. The flame symbolises all our hopes and dreams for a happy and more peaceful world for all. The relay has visited over 160 countries in six continents in an effort to encourage friendship and a more peaceful world, believing we can all contribute to peace in the world by creating and sharing peace in our own lives and our communities.

Many people are inspired by the simple message of the Peace Run, and while not everyone is a runner, we have had wonderful support from Hawera Central Motor Lodge, The Park Motel, and another wonderful Hawera motel. Toyota New Zealand has also very kindly leant us an extremely comfortable and economical hybrid Rav 4. People from all walks of life join the Peace Run relay along the way to support its simple purpose.

Over seven million children in more than 140 nations have experienced the Peace Run’s peace education program, which encourages children to build a more peaceful environment in their own community through peace-themed art, music, drama and sports initiatives.

In New Zealand past Peace Run patrons have included Allison Roe, Precious McKenzie, Hall of Fame athlete Rod Dixon, the late and legendary Arthur Lydiard and Olympians John Walker, Ian Ferguson and former All Black coach Graham Henry. Top New Zealand sportspeople such as Valerie Adams and Indy 500 winner Scott Dixon have also expressed their enthusiasm for the relay, joining a long list of national and world leaders inspired by the global event.

Sri Chinmoy comments:

“First we have to establish peace within ourselves, and only then can we try to offer peace to others".

A moment of stillness to feel the peace in their hearts.

A Christian Word

There’s a bit of “gossip” history in the Old Testament, in the book of Samuel. Now, King David was head over Israel & there was peace throughout the land. In the spring the king & his army would march out and have a dust-up with their neighbours over anything. King David did not go out with the troops, he decided he needed a break from all the fighting!

One evening he was on his roof and happened to look over and see a woman bathing, she appealed to his senses and had her bought to him. He slept with her knowing she was married, she became pregnant. In order to try and make the husband believe it was his, he ordered him to go home from the battle and stay with his wife.

Loyal man that he was, he refused to be comforted while the army was sleeping rough. The king ordered the captain to put the husband amongst the fiercest fighting and withdraw from him, they did, he died. But it gets worse, the child dies, the eldest son gets everyone on his side and ousts his dad, the king. The king flees, the son commits more sins, then the commander of the king’s army kills the son. What a shemozzle!!

But, not that different from today, is it? People have been sinning right from Adam and Eve’s Day, but what really astounds me is God’s love, even though they have chosen to go down these dark paths, God still remains faithful! But! There will be consequences for sins, how wonderful to be able to approach Father God knowing you are a sinner! What a wonderful moment for you, if you confess, you’re a sinner & need Jesus to help you onto a new pathway! And He will, and not only that, He will be with you for all time, both now & eternally.

Even though all these things happen today just like they did thousands of years ago, God demonstrates His love to us by giving Jesus as a living sacrifice for your sins. Jesus died for you to have everlasting life with God. Sins can and will be cancelled out, forgotten by God once you repent. That’s the salvation call – repentance!

The Bible is an amazing read, full of reality & truth, as mentioned above, it is not some mystical book that requires special peoples to interpret, it’s so open for you to understand, honest and real, just as God is towards us!!

Thank you

I would like to thank all those people who have supported the paper over the 20 plus years Tony and I have been publishing it. Your adverts, stories and photos have helped keep it a truly local paper, which is a rare thing indeed. I am sure you will provide the same support to Janene Pope; I wish her the best as she takes over as Editor from the April issue.

Patea Waverley Garden Club

Hello Garden Lovers!

Before I mention our February garden visit, I would like to acknowledge the sterling effort put in by Tony and Cath Sheard and more recently Cath on her own in accepting our articles in the Patea Waverley News for many years without any fuss or bother. The newsletter has really been our main source of communicating with members and will be sorely missed when Cath “hangs up her hat” and production ceases shortly. Cath and Tony, all garden lovers in the area say a BIG thank you to you both!

On 16th February a dozen brave people met and travelled to Damian and Jane Ropers property at Alton. For a couple of days prior, the weather had not been friendly for garden wanderers and on the day, the weather app on my phone indicated the southerly wind would blow itself out and the rain would cease by 6pm so with Jane and Damian still being keen to have us visit the decision was made to go ahead with the trip.

After pooling vehicles, our cars pulled up to Damian and Jane’s property at Petch Road and they appeared from the back of their house with such welcoming smiles on their faces. After introductions, Damian took the lead and we followed him into the unknown and walked the board walk with him. Jane followed at the back of the group and answered any queries people may have had whilst Damian gave a great informative commentary as we walked further and further into their native bush area.

At this point, special mention must be made of their son Jack, who mapped out and built most of the boardwalk built to date – it has been such an amazing achievement. Over several months, Jack spent a lot of his spare time working to accomplish the boardwalk so really the whole area is a credit to the Roper family as I am sure Jack’s sisters would also have had an input as well even if in a small way.

Damian and Jane are really passionate about their mission to control predators and in their shed Damian showed us various traps he and Jane and others in the area use to hopefully in the not too distant future, have a predator free environment to enjoy.

Following this, we drove to their Pa site, Ohuarai Pa i te kohu. Jane welcomed us to the site with a karakia (prayer) before we entered. It was the first time I had been in a Pa and the first thing I noticed was even though there were gaps between the upright posts forming the area, it was very sheltered which is ideal conditions for the nursery enclosed within.

Damian took us to vantage points where we overlooked various projects that are underway on this amazing restoration to protect resources so that they can persist for future generations.

Another interesting association with the Pa was the fungi area with mycelium maturing in various stages on a variety of logs between the living walls of the area. It was like entering a florist shop full of fungi! After a hot cuppa and some lovely home cooking for supper, we thanked our awesome hosts and as the sun set, we left the property (sorry for driving down your cow race instead of your tanker track Damian and Jane) and made our way home once more.

If you are keen to join us in March, please meet at Margaret’s place at 5a Fookes Street in Waverley at 6.30 pm. Please bring a plate of finger food to be shared for tea and $2.

If you are interested in being part of our group and can’t make our tea meeting, ring any of the people listed below.

Anyone interested in being part of our garden group are more than welcome. We would like to have a brief meeting to discuss how we will continue without the help of the Patea Waverley Newsletter to advertise our events. It may be that we have a Facebook page or a group email or even a letter box drop for people interested but first of all we need names and details of those people.

Coast tragedy ends in Pātea 71 years ago

On Sunday 27 January 1952 the body of a ‘tall, strongly-built’ man was found at the high tide mark below the cliffs on the north end of the Pātea beach by Mr Ivan Brown as he returned from an afternoon of fishing. Mr Brown notified Constable Claude Smith, Bertram Anderson and Dr Houghton. Dr Houghton estimated the body had been in the ocean between 6 to 8 weeks. There was no DNA testing 71 years ago, the only evidence the police had to deal with were the khaki shorts and hobnail boots the man was wearing. The following day the body was buried in the Anglican section of the Patea Cemetery. The Burial records in St Georges Church have him listed as: ‘unknown man’ and his abode: ‘deceased on the beach’.

Eight weeks earlier on 2nd December 1951 on the West Coast of the South Island a strongly built 40 year old coal miner named John Pratt went deer stalking, he was due back on 6th December. But he didn’t return and was reported missing. Search parties started looking for him on Sunday 10 December. There had been heavy rain in the area, the Mokihinui River was in flood. His gun was found on the side of the river, it is thought he got washed away crossing the river with a deer skin. It was eight weeks before his body was found over 400km away.

John was the eldest of Christopher and Mary Patricia Pratt’s six children. Robert Leeston, Lizzie Jane, Agnes Muriel, Margaret Constance and Christopher Edward were his younger siblings. The first four children were born in Milltown, inland from Hokitika. When John was 4 years old the family moved to Seddonville. They were a coalmining family, Stockton and Denniston mines were nearby. John and Robert followed their father’s footsteps and worked in the mines when they left school. John did go to Teachers Collage for a while, but it wasn’t for him, and he returned home to work at Denniston mine. He was working in a privately owned coal mine with his brother Robert at the time of his death.

I spoke to John Pratts nephew Bob Pratt (son of Johns brother: Robert Leeson Pratt) recently on the phone, from his home in Westport. Bob was 15 years old when his Uncle John went missing, he is now a spritely 87 year old. He told me John’s favourite place to be was out in the bush, hunting. He had an old army dingy that he hid behind a hut on the Mokihinui River (Specimen’s Hut) so he could cross the river. He would skin the deer he shot and dry the skins out, tacked to the ground, to sell. It was too difficult to get any of the meat out of this remote part of the Westcoast. John never married. Bob remembers his uncle as a kind, cheerful man, who loved being out in the bush and was happy to teach his nephews how to hunt and skin deer. Bob went hunting with him several times, it was always a big adventure, completely cut off from the outside world for the days they were away.

There were articles in Westcoast newspapers about the search for John Pratt in December 1951, and by January the family thought they would never find John’s body. Until that summers afternoon in Pātea, when he came to rest on the sand. It was another week until his clothing was sent to Westport for identification and the mystery of his identity was solved. By that stage he was buried in Pātea. The family was so sad to lose John but relieved to know what had happened and decided to leave him buried in the Pātea Cemetery. Bob remembers his grandparents and some of the uncles and aunts went to Pātea for the unveiling of the headstone they commissioned a while later. The inscription on his headstone reads: ‘In Loving Memory of John, Beloved son of C & M P Pratt, accidently drowned in the Mokihinui River, Westport, 5th December 1951, aged 40, Until we meet’. His grave is at the end of the Cemetery on the

Waverley Croquet Club

After a couple of weeks break over the Christmas period Club days resumed on the 6th January. It was a very disruptive month due to bad weather which always seemed to be on our club days or days we had planned to visit other Clubs or having them join us, therefore we had a quiet month with only one planned visit from Wanganui Club managing to get a visit in. It was a very pleasant day with lots of fun and laughs. Five games were managed to be played between a bountiful morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea which was enjoyed by all. There were only 2 jump shots and 3 hole in ones achieved which reflected lack of play over the month.

February however has been a lot better with play on most days, even Cyclone Gabrielle was kind to us and gave us a couple of lovely days play. The Club Singles are now well underway but will take some time to come to a conclusion as there are many games to play. On the 22nd we visited Wanganui Club. The weather was good and we made the day a bit more pleasurable by going out to lunch first before we were due at their Clubrooms. Four games were played before we were treated to a lovely afternoon tea. A good day was had by all. During February there were 12 jump shots and 7 holes in one achieved.

Upcoming events. There is only one event coming up in March. Inglewood Club is due to visit us on Wednesday 29th. We will be providing them with morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. These days are great so hopefully all goes well weather wise for this visit.

Waverley Primary School

Tena Koutou Katoa,

Things are super exciting at Waverley Primary at the moment with our 150th Jubilee just around the corner. So much work has been put into this event and we are really looking forward to experiencing the fruit of our labour. The event kicks off on Friday 10th March with a Powhiri and a Wine and Cheese evening. On Saturday the 11th we have a Parade, Gala day, Photos followed by a Dinner and Dance at the Community Centre. Sunday concludes the jubilee with a Church service. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone on the committee for all of the work that they have put into the event. This has taken a long time and there have been many hours of meeting and effort put in to ensure that this event is a success.

This term we have added a new staff member to our amazing team at Waverley. Henry Scott joins us as our new caretaker. We are very excited to have Henry on board. We are also interviewing for another teacher’s aide to join our staff. Thanks to everyone who has applied for these positions.

Last weekend we had a working bee at the school. Thanks to everyone who gave up some of their day to come and put in a bit of mahi. The school looks tremendous.

Finally this month I would like to mention the date of our Waverley Primary School Tail Ride. The date for the ride is Sunday 19th March. It is in the same place as last year with some alterations to the amazing track. Thanks again to all of the farmers who have agreed to let us use their farms. A special thanks to Chris Koubaridis and his team of volunteers for all of their hard work organising the event.

Greet, Meet and Eat Parent Evening

Each year we hold a Greet, Meet and Eat evening. This gives everyone in our school community the opportunity to talk to staff about class routines and expectations as well as enjoying a free sausage sizzle and a chance to meet some of the new families and catch up with old friends.

Patea River Catchment Group: Trap Building

The start of the year has been busy for the Patea River Catchment Group – and it’ll have to stay that way if we want to get our next traplines deployed before the end of Autumn.

Our group was fortunate enough to get funding from both the South Taranaki District council through their Natural Environment Fund and the Toi Foundation. This funding has allowed us to purchase the remaining traps that were needed to implement the rest of our trapping plan, and to also engage Taranaki Kiwi Trust to begin drafting a “phase 2” plan. We would like to thank both South Taranaki District Council and Toi Foundation for recognising the worth in our project and allocating funds to help us on our journey.

Ordering 247 traps was now the easy part – we then needed to build them all. We had a build cost in our budget, we just needed to find enough people willing to build them for us. We approached the Kakaramea School events / fundraising committee to see if they would be keen to spend a day building traps for us as a school fundraiser. Damian and Jane Roper offered us their workshop to build the traps in and a hot Saturday in February was spent by 10+ parents and the school principal constructing the traps under the guidance of Don Field while the kids swam and explored the bush walk behind the shed.

The school volunteers managed to smash out 220 Doc200s in 5 hours which is by no means a small task!

The Patea River Catchment Group now has the job of deploying these traps. If you are interested in helping with our trapping network, please get in touch with our group coordinator Tessa on 021 063 7327.

Club Opening Day

Club Opening day was played on Saturday 4th February and a stableford competition was played. Gerald Rutten had a hot round and scored 43 points followed by Roger Edgecombe on 38 points and Steve Honeyfield on 36 points. Twos were scored by Roger Edgecombe, Mike Taikato and Steve Honeyfield but no one drew the correct hole to win the jackpot twos.

Patea Cup

The first round of the Patea Cup was played on Saturday 11th February and some good scores were recorded. First was Phil Cassidy with a net 66 followed by Ray Finlay with a net 67 and Gerald Rutten with a net 69.

Oakes Memorial

The 1st round of the Oakes Memorial was played on the 18th February. Twos were scored by Nick Williams and Mike Taikato but once again the jackpot twos was not struck.

Challenge Ladder

The new challenge ladder has started. You need five net scores to get onto the ladder so come on out and enter those scores.

Business House Golf

This is a good competition played over the summer months and is a teams ambrose competition. Thanks to all the businesses who have sponsored the free nightly prizes. After six nights the competition is very close and a number of teams have a chance to win the aggregate if they play well the last two nights; Chilly Bears, Universal Motors, Honeyfields and Hooper Engineering all have recorded consistent scores. Thanks to the teams who have involved our junior members in their teams.

Summer Matchplay

The Summer match play competition started with sixteen players and the ladies that entered were playing the white tees and were given extra shots. In the final of the main event Jamie Close-Adams was to good and defeated Gerald Rutten 5/4 and in the final of the consolation Phil Cassidy defeated Steve Honeyfield 5/3. Thanks to all the players for participating.

Roger Rei Memorial Open Golf Tournament

The scheduled date for this tournament was a weather disaster and it was an early morning for the match committee ringing around players to say the tournament had been postponed.

The new date for this tournament is now Saturday 11th March 2023 and there are still early and late times to be filled. Contact Ray Finlay for a tee time 027 270 7542.

Men’s Handicap Pennants

Once again we made a poor start and were well beaten by Manukorihi in the first round at Te Ngutu 7.5 to 1.5 but we performed well in the second round to defeat Stratford at Manukorihi winning 6 to 3. Keep up the good form guys.

Taranaki 5000

Come on up to the club house and fill out a nomination form. Clubhouse is open Tuesdays Saturdays and Sundays.

Evening Meal

The next evening meal catered for by the Red Rock will be Friday 17th March 2023. Have a night off cooking and come along for a night out.

Waitotara School Achieving Together

Welcome to the 2023 school year. I hope you all had a restful holiday and enjoyed the sunshine (when it arrived!) Our staff are rested and refreshed and looking forward to another year with your tamariki.

Our school wide topic for Term One is ‘Garden to Table’. We will be exploring our greenhouse, planting vegetables and designing and building planter boxes. This will be ongoing throughout the year and links into our Enviroschool commitment.

Monday Momentum will continue to focus on our DRIVE values of Determination, Respect, Initiative, Virtue and Empathy and awards will be given out weekly for those showing our DRIVE values around the school.

Technology at Whanganui Girls College starts on Monday 13th February for our Year 7 & 8 students; they will be learning Food Tech, Science, Computer Programming and Hard Materials.

Our free school lunches have changed this year. We are delighted to have Tiffany Parkes as our kitchen manager every day. Tiffany has planned a delicious, nutritious menu for our children to enjoy.

Our Professional Development focus this year continues with Structured literacy and Healthy Active Learning; a two year programme facilitated by Sport Whanganui. Our Team are also learning Te reo through Te ahu o te reo Maori on Tuesday afternoons in Whanganui

It’s wonderful to hear that our turf was well utilised during the holidays for tennis. We have booked our Seniors into tennis lessons with Tennis Whanganui that will continue through the term. Swimming will also be our focus this year.
