A Christian Word The Bible: this book is outstanding in so many ways, first it is the only ‘religious’ book with a history, a lot of archeological evidence is confirmed by the Old Testament time and again, it is a very accurate and detailed book. Not only is it accurate with history but more so with God’s prophecies through His prophets. There are two prophecy worth mentioning beside the 300+ just in the old testament alone and they are first – the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus and the second is His return here upon earth. From the book of Genesis, the Psalms, Isaiah, Zechariah and numerous other old testament prophets, all when combined prophesized exactly this – Jesus, born of a virgin in Bethlehem, shortly after this King Herod would kill all baby boys under two years of age in Bethlehem, Mary & Joseph would flee to Egypt until Herod died, Jesus healed the blind, the lepper, the cripple, He will be betrayed for 30 pieces of silver, He would be crucified, be buried in a tomb and would rise again from the dead 3 days later! All these prophecies came true, there is more, but space for it here is limited. His lineage to be born a man as well as being God is clearly detailed in Mathew chapter 1. The second prophecy is yet to happen, happen it will and very soon! His return here to earth. People may have thought in the old testament days that something that was going to happen in 1000 years’ time may have caused a ‘yea right’ attitude, how wrong they were! Therefor the second prophecy is going to happen; it too was mentioned in the old testament and a lot in the new testament, to warn us to be ready, not to be trying to be good or cleaning up the state of the whole world to resemble something more humane. No! Jesus has already paid in full all your sins, so all that is left is for you to take a step of faith and confess your sins to Jesus and repent, not a big ask at all to guarantee that when Jesus does come back, you need not fear any retribution for all your sins! Prophecies about Jesus are nearly all completed … soon He will return. Then will you run to Him or from Him? Come Lord Jesus Ted Reeves, Patea

Notes from the meeting on Wednesday 27 January 2021 4pm, provided by the Board Members. The first meeting for the year was held at the Waitotara War Memorial Hall. Present were: Pātea Community Board members; Jacq, Dianne, Maria, Jo, Rob Northcott (Pātea Ward Councillor), Phil Nixon (Mayor), Janine Maruera (Community Development Officer), Sara Dymond (PA), Liam Dagg (Group Manager Environmental Services), Brian Rook (Pātea Ward Councillor) and 15 members of the public. Open Forum: - Melva Tucker spoke on behalf of the Pātea Pae Pae committee members, who were also in attendance. She thanked the Council for their support of this important festival over the years and spoke to their application for funding for this year’s event on 6 February. Their funding was granted, and Mayor Phil congratulated them on their hard work to make The Pae Pae in the Park the success it is every year. - David Pearce spoke of the Nukumaru Station Rd extension project, that has still not started. It is a major concern with another winter loaming and the fragility of the current road. Silver Fern Works are relying on this project to secure their access for freight etc. He asked why it hadn’t started considering it was granted money as a shovel ready project in July. Mayor Phil replied with the current status, which is that it is to begin very soon. David also reported that roaming stock continue to be a problem on the roads at Ngamatapouri. - Laurie Mildenhall asked for a reason why it is taking so long for the leaching hole on the base of the Waka to be repaired. The figures have been painted so well, but the hole that was cut in the base to repair the concrete is still there. Liam Dagg will follow up on this. Laurie also wanted to know why holes left in the footpaths at Pātea by Chorus contractors were filled in, but not finished to a standard as they were before the work was done. The footpath on the corner of Hadfield street is uneven and sunken in, and there is also a lot of spray paint marks left on the footpaths by Chorus. Rob urged anyone affected by these holes in footpaths to phone it through to the Council on 0800 111 323. Laurie would also like to see a seat re installed at the Whale Bone Sculpture. And Laurie asked why the showers at the Pātea Pools had no showerhead or mixer – Rob answered that they were continually vandalised so have not been replaced in recent years. Laurie also spoke of the unsafe use of four-wheeler bikes on the Pātea Beach. Members of the public added to this and reported on an incident where a man on a four-wheeler took the Life Buoy from the stand at Mana Bay and tied it to their four-wheeler and towed a child round the sand on it. Rob said this kind of irresponsible behaviour needs to be reported to the Police on *555. Without anyone reporting it, nothing will be done to stop it. Mayor Phil was appalled at this incident and pointed out that that Life Buoy could save a life one day, but not if it is destroyed like this. - Tina Fisher asked for assistance to get more play equipment for the Manchester St playground. Rob advised her to make a plan of what they want and work with Janine to arrange funding for it. - Joan MacBeth and Tom Matiaha spoke on behalf of the Patea RSA in regard to their Centennial celebrations on Saturday 6 March. They are requesting funding from the Community Bd for the cost of the road closure on the day, this was granted. There will be a large public event at the Domain, with Battle re-enactments, military displays, and food stalls. - Maria Ferris spoke of the state of the gardens at each end of Waverley. A year ago Sally Newland spoke about these neglected gardens at a Community Board meeting, and still no progress has been made. Sally had tended the gardens in the past, but Maria would like the Council to do these gardens, as they are the gateway from the south. - Dianne Lance spoke of the problem of speeding traffic at Waverley Beach, on Coleman Ave in particular. It goes from 100km to 30km in a very short space and there are a large number of children along that road. Jo Peacock added to this by telling of the 4 wheelers that are using the walkway between the toilet and the playground and there have been several near misses with children on the walkway. Signage is required stating that bikes are not allowed on the walkway and once again, incidents need to be reported to the Council. - Brian Rook asked who was responsible for the over-grown and dead scrubs at the entrance to Waitotara. Maria found reference to an old enquiry about this and stated that it was a combination of NZTA and the Council. No plans from Council to tidy this area in the near future. David Pearce then offered to provide staff and truck to tidy the area up. Brian will help him with this. - Vicki Koubaridis asked for an update on the ‘Innovative Streets from Waka Kotahi’ project for Waverley is progressing. Mayor Phil reported that the speed humps have put a hold on the start date, they will have to be made of asphalt, as the removable plastic ones were not going to be suitable. End of Open Forum. Minutes from last meeting were discussed and confirmed. Matters arising: - Pātea Beach Lookout directional sign project, Janine reported that hui with Ngapari and Hemi last week went well and there will be a site visit with them next week. Rob has a meeting with Jim Pearson at Tilt on 4 Feb which Janine will also attend to discuss the proposed information sign Tilt want to erect. - Roaming Dogs and dog attacks are continuing to be a problem in all towns. Rob reported a Waverley resident who lost several sheep in a dog attack, the dog then ended up in the Waverley Pool area, all swimmers in the pool had to evacuate the area. Residents are taking matters into their own hands at times as they feel that they are not getting support required from Council, and other residents are feeling like they can’t safely leave their homes on foot. Rob gets a lot of calls about this issue and always advises them to log a call with the Council call centre. Liam reported that there has been an increase of calls logged at the Council about roaming dogs and dog attacks. - Basketball hoop at Aotea Park Waverley. Janine reported that we met with the manufacturer of the new hoop a couple of weeks ago to decide on where it would be placed. The young Waverley resident who requested this hoop - Robert Carrick, was also there and Phil Waite. It will be installed very soon. - Dianne and Jo attended the Waverley Library ‘Summer Blast Reading Programme’ prizegiving on 27 Jan. They congratulated the Library staff for organising such a good holiday programme for over 300 South Taranaki children. As Mayor Phil added, while everyone else is on holiday, our Library staff are working hard. Jacq will attend the Patea one on 29 Jan. Full minutes of this and all Council meetings can be found on the South Taranaki District Council Website, under the heading ‘Our Council’ then go to ‘Mayor & Elected members’ then ‘Community Board - Pātea’ or view them at Pātea or Waverley LibraryPlus. Shop South Taranaki Local South Taranaki businesses have a new place to be discovered and grow their sales with the launch of a Shop South Taranaki website www.shopsouthtaranaki.co.nz The new website, an initiative led by the South Taranaki District Council (STDC) and developed in collaboration with the District’s business associations, is designed to create an online marketplace to help businesses attract new customers and boost their bottom line. South Taranaki Mayor Phil Nixon says it’s a perfect time to support local businesses. “One of the things that really stood out this year is the support our communities have shown towards the shop local movement. This new marketplace is exciting because it showcases our wonderful range of businesses to potential customers anywhere in the world. People will be impressed when they discover how much is happening here,” he says. STDC business development manager Scott Willson is looking forward to growing the online marketplace. “We have 120 businesses on board already and would love to see as many as possible join and benefit from this. It’s free to be involved, easy to create a listing and there is a category to suit every type of business. I’m happy to help anyone who needs a hand getting started,” says Willson. “The aim is to give businesses of all types and sizes a professional online presence, which is increasingly important.” Customers can browse twelve categories and choose to view listings from throughout the District or within each of the seven towns. “With such great variety all in one spot, I’d like Shop South Taranaki to become the place customers visit first when they are looking for local products and services,” Willson added. Craig Dingle, of Dreamtime Surf in Ōpunakē, is one of the business owners excited by the opportunity. “More and more people are researching destinations and making purchases online. We are pleased to have our business showcased on Shop South Taranaki, it’s a great Council initiative” he says. Each participating business receives a fully editable webpage including their logo, an image, information about the business, opening hours and contact details. Businesses can drive traffic to their existing websites and social media pages or upgrade their listings to run a complete online store within the marketplace. Any business or community service based in South Taranaki can join the Shop South Taranaki marketplace by creating a free listing at shopsouthtaranaki.co.nz.

Abbotsford Waverley We have had another great year at Abbotsford, thanks for everyone’s support to make this possible. We have been extremely lucky to receive grants from McBroom Estate for a new wheel chair and TSB for operational costs to run the home. Thanks to Letitia and Karley for your help in making this happen. We have Leo Brown the Podiatrist coming every month, community patrol using a room as their base and standby running daily from 9.30-11.30. The district nurses use the rooms when needed. In December we were lucky enough to have Aleasha Agar start a weekly clinic of sport/therapeutical body Massage and this continues this year. Easy living had a successful visit in September and are due back in March along with St. John’s medical alarms, please feel free to come along and see the wonderful products they have to help assist you around the home. Great to see word getting out about our equipment to hire such as wheelchairs, crutches and shower stools to name a few. Beaver Trees came in August and cleaned up the Smith Street side trees, which has been long over due. Special mention to John Wilson for cleaning up the side garden & Chris Amon and Chris koubaridis for taking the rubbish away. Thanks to Cath Koubaridis and her team of helpers for keeping the gardens up to scratch and for spending endless hours at Abbotsford making sure the spraying is done and things are looking wonderful. We appreciate all the hours our volunteers put in. A huge thank you to the Catholic Church for coming to our rescue and donating a fridge for use in the kitchen. It’s great to be able to work in with other community groups. Please remember these rooms are available for anyone to hire, they are great for meetings, mini conferences & various clinics. Here’s to another great year with more events and gatherings. We are always on the lookout for new committe members and ideas to utilise the building are always welcome.

Happy New Year and welcome back to our children and whanau at Maxwell and Districts Kindergarten, we return from our relaxing Christmas break with family and friends ready for an exciting year ahead! We continue to be thankful for our small place in the world and our community here at Maxwell, Kai Iwi, Waitotara, Waverley and surrounding districts as we continue to see many of our friends and family around the world in various states of lockdown and restricted living. Let’s hope this year is full of solutions and movement forward for us all. The children have been enjoying the warm weather getting amongst the water play, slip ‘n’ slide and sprinkler on our new grass area of our outdoor playground. As well as seeing friends again, meeting new ones and enjoying many construction and art projects together. Toward the end of last year we had an Art Auction at Kindergarten, raising money for a large mural on our outdoor fence and shed and fence cut outs to see and pat Rainey, our neighbouring miniature pony, as well construction of a ‘bug hotel’. Thank you to all our families that donated items to Auction, bid on their child’s art creations and brought our raffles around that time. We managed to raise a great amount for these projects to be completed! Final tally to come. Your ongoing support and generosity for our projects greatly benefit the children and our environment upgrade. This month we look forward to welcoming new our children and their whanau to our community and we farewell many of our older children as they start different schools around the area. There are also spaces available still on most days here at Maxwell Kindergarten, we would love to hear from you or show you round if you are thinking of enrolling your child, we would love to hear from you. Whanganui Summer Programme Bus trip to Patea We had the fifth annual Whanganui Summer Programme bus trip on Monday 18 January. Patea Historical Society hosted a full bus of 50 people (led by David Scoullar) to some of the sites in our area. We started the day at Aotea Utanganui (big thanks to Luana and Amber for opening early) Then we went to the old Powerhouse circ 1902 on the coast off Powerhouse Road. Then up to the Patea Dam/Lake Rotorangi for lunch, a walk and a fun and informative talk from Suz Cowley, (caretaker). Then headed back to Alton Coronation Hall for afternoon tea and a cuppa served up by Molly Cole. Last stop was to Jim Baker's farm to have a look at the 32 new ‘Tilt Energy’ Windmills. A very big thank you to Karen Pratt for being the photographer on the day. Here’s a bit of information about the Patea Power Station: The Patea Power Station was the first Council owned electrical plant in New Zealand when it opened on Saturday 19 April 1902. Other towns around New Zealand had started privately owned schemes, although Kakaramea farmer James Ball offered a ten-year term loan of the whole amount of the project of £2500 at 4.5%, which was gratefully accepted by the Patea Borough Council. Lighting Patea by electricity was first minuted at a Council meeting in July 1882, but the idea didn’t take momentum until 6 November 1899. The Power Station is situated north of the town, on the cliff at the end of Powerhouse Road. Water was derived from the Kaikura Stream on the Honeyfield farm, and a dam was constructed to conserve the supply. It was connected to Payne’s Flour Mill Dam, behind the Kakaramea Dairy Factory, which the Council bought for extra water storage at the time the scheme was being constructed. The Mill was leased to Mr Buckthought, a Foxton flax miller, until the end of 1905 after which it was used to control the flow of water to the hydro. The architect for the building was Climie and Fairhall, Hawera. Builder William M Aitchison of Patea, with Turnbull and Jones supplying the required machinery for the Electric Lighting Works for Patea. Locker & Dickson of Patea commenced the concrete work and building of the dam of about four acres in extent in September 1901. The internationally renowned Captain Alban J. Roberts was the first engineer. He resigned in 1904 and went on to invent remotely operated robots and machines. There is a good fall for the water, which drove a Brown-Bouverie generator and Escher Weiss turbine. The current was led into the town, where it is transformed at various places to 100 volts. In 1906 there were 100 consumers of electricity. The pill box on the cliff side housed the generator plant, and the tower was the surge chamber to allow the flow of water to the turbine to be turned off. In his article in The Daily News, on 19 July 2003, David Bruce gives details of the Power plant; Transmission to Patea, a distance of three miles, was by a single-phase line at a voltage of 3,000 volts, distribution at 110 volts single phase. The station was at first for lighting only from dusk until about midnight and in the winter starting at 6.30am for 2 hours. But later the plant was run on Monday afternoons to enable housewives to do ironing. Consumers had the choice of either being charged by meters or per installed point, with the former option being preferred. In 1918 a 65-horsepower suction gas motor was installed in York Street as part of the town water reticulation scheme. This supplied electricity to operate the pumps but could not be synchronised with the hydro, although the hydropower could be used to operate the pumps. This motor could supply the needs of the town when for any reason the hydro was closed down. The concrete building that housed this machine is still standing on York Street. Disaster struck on Tuesday 26 November 1920, when the dam walls broke. The attendants’ hut, above the powerhouse, was swept into the sea along with its two occupants, Mr Mitchell and Mr McDonald. They were fortunate to miraculously survive. The powerhouse and machinery was largely undamaged, but the Council decided to rebuild it. Around this time water rights had been obtained to the Mangaroa Stream and work was in hand to add this water supply to the system. The idea was dropped when the decision was made to build a new powerhouse and install higher-powered machinery. Charles F Pulley, the contractor who had just finished the sea wall at Patea, was hired to demolish the old plant, cut a new terrace nearly 5m lower on the cliff, construct the new concrete Powerhouse and install the new plant. The tunnel, on an angle through the cliff for the engineers to access the building from the flat paddock above, was also built by Charles Pulley at this time; a big improvement from the ladders down the cliff. A new cottage for the electrical engineer was also constructed. The dam burst could have been disastrous for a town by now dependent on its electric light. Fortunately, the backup power of a suction engine for the town's sewage system, enabled the supply to resume while the dam was rebuilt. The sides of the dam were also built up higher. Power supply was extended to Kakaramea at this time. Alton and other outlying districts didn’t connect to electricity till 1933. In 1923 the Powerplant made a profit of £4. In 1927 a Ruston Hornby Diesel Electric engine was installed, which could be run in parallel with the hydro or separately when required. The Patea Mail reports on 12 Aug 1927 of the Mayor Mr Peter PS Finlayson and several Patea Borough Councillors visiting the Powerhouse. They were very impressed with the cleanliness and order of the buildings and machinery. Mr Roy Kinnaird was the electrical engineer at that time and it is thought he was living on site in the cottage that was rebuilt after the 1920 wash-out. His wife provided afternoon tea for the tour party that day. She was presumably living there too, and I’m sure she provided a neat and cosy atmosphere in that remote cottage for all who visited. By the late 1940s or early 1950s no one lived on the job and the cottage was probably demolished. At the meeting of the Council on 8 July 1952 the engineer reported that the hydro generator had burned out. He recommended that no further repairs be carried out. At the meeting on 13 January 1959 it was reported that the Borough Power enterprise had been sold to the South Taranaki Electric Power Board for £15,000. It ceased generating power, was stripped of most of its machinery and abandoned to the elements. This article from the Hawera Normanby Star on the 30 October 1920 tells of the Accident at the Powerhouse:

PATEA EMPLOYEES' THRILLING EXPERIENCE. The story told by the two young men who had such a narrow escape from death on Tuesday evening when the dam burst at the Borough Council's hydro-

electric works is a thrilling one (reports the Press). It appears that the young fellows had just sat down to tea, when they suddenly became aware of a large volume of water pouring over the roof and sides of the whare in which they were sitting. Mitchell says that he had a plate on his knee at the time, and to his horror and amazement he found the building commencing to rock, and gradually slip towards the edge of the cliff and into the sea. He rushed to the window and endeavoured to escape through it, but at that moment the whare must have been carried over the cliff for the next thing he remembered is that he was lying on the sand with the waves dashing over him. At that time he had on a pair of pants and a shirt. As he was sucked out to sea the pants became entangled around his feet, making swimming impossible. Fortunately, the next wave flashed him ashore, where he lay for some time unconscious. McDonald, his companion, who had toppled over the cliff in the whare, and had been badly shaken and bruised, managed to scramble out, and on seeing Mitchell's apparently lifeless form, dragged it above high water. Mitchell at this time was clad only in a shirt. Shortly after he regained consciousness. The sides of the cliff are perpendicular, but an active person can scramble up under ordinary circumstances. The two young lads, however, were badly battered about, and both had lost the use of an arm apiece. They had, consequently, to remain on the small sandy inlet in the drenching rain, with the waves from time to time dashing over them. After some two and a half hours in this predicament they began to lose hope, and fully anticipated being washed out to sea and drowned, when suddenly they heard a shout, and looking up saw Mr Bason at the top of the cliff. He immediately told them to hang on whilst he went for a ladder, which, after a short hunt, he found. It was too short, however, so with the aid of some telephone wire he managed to fasten a couple of poles to it and let himself down the cliff. On reaching the bottom he found he had to wade across a gigantic hole, nearly six feet deep, which the water from the bursting dam had made, before he could reach the two stranded youths. Not without some difficulty he managed to get first one and then tie other across the water hole and up the cliff. On arrival at. the top he lit a fire, and after seeing that the young fellows had got some warmth into their bodies he went to the nearest house; which is about a mile away, where he obtained assistance and some warm clothing, and brought the injured men into town. On arrival at the hospital it was at once seen that Mitchell's arm was dislocated, whilst McDonald's arm was so swollen that it was impossible to say whether it was broken or not. However, Mitchell was soon attended to, his shirt first of all having to be cut off his swollen limb before the latter was pulled into place, an operation which, by the way, was performed without the aid of chloroform. McDonald had his wounds dressed, and was detained at the hospital, but Mitchell was allowed to proceed to his home. Both look upon their escape from death as little short of miraculous, for the narrow strip of beach on to which the whare toppled from its foundation in the side of the cliff is only a few feet square, and is under water at high tide, the waves dashing with great violence against the cliff sides. Welcome to Patea Kindergarten 2021! As the new year has arrived, we feel it is the perfect time to share with the community a part of our vision, philosophy and the learning environment we provide for the children. Our centre whakatauki is “HE TAONGA TE TAMATI” – “THE CHILD IS OUR TREASURE” . We work together to provide an environment that reflects bi/multi-culturalism, learning about ourselves, our heritage and our community. Each child’s strengths and qualities are respected and whanau aspirations for their child recognised and woven into their learning and development. We encourage whānau to share and contribute to their child’s learning journey with us at a level that is comfortable for them. It is important to us that all whanau establish a sense of belonging here and that this is “their place”. The Kindergarten has an open-door policy, with all whānau and visitors being welcome at any time. There is always a coffee or tea available and room for children to have a play and explore our environment even if they are not on our waiting list yet. Children can be put on our waiting list at the age of 2yrs. That does not mean they will be able to start straight away, as they will gain a place on our rolls according to age. Older children will be given the opportunity to start before younger children. The Kindergarten has 4 fully qualified and registered teachers and we also have the privilege of having team members who are fluent in Te Reo. We are extremely well resourced and provide a programme that is suited to children aged 2- 6 years old. We provide 5 sessions a week, Monday to Friday, 8.30 am – 1.30 pm. We offer 25 hours of free ECE (Early Childhood Education). Our programme is guided by our Curriculum Te Whāriki, which we are happy to share with adults. Within this document there are five areas: Belonging, Well Being, Communication, Contribution and Exploration, all wonderful ways to support our tamariki as they learn through play, extending on their skills and ability. We have a team who are dedicated to responding to the needs of individual children, supporting and encouraging them as they explore our environment, learn and develop new skills. We focus strongly on building respectful relationships and this is done through role modelling, encouraging children to negotiate and providing language that will support them as they communicate their thoughts and feelings with others. This empowers and enables children to make themselves heard, gaining a positive skill set to guide them, not only at kindergarten but in life. Verbal communication is one of our focus areas as we have observed that excess use of technology does not always have a positive effect on language development so we are very active in encouraging and supporting our children to use appropriate words to express themselves. We are proud of our beautiful outdoor environment, which reflects a part of where we belong. Over the past years we have worked together to provide lots of natural resources and have replaced the majority of our plastics with wooden alternatives. The outdoor area is huge, offering many areas to explore. Learning through play is the best way for children between the ages of 0-7 to learn and it is interesting to note that Primary Schools are now introducing this teaching style into their programmes. So, this is a small account of what is happening at 4 Derby Street. Please feel welcome at any time to drop in for a visit. You don’t have to be a child to enjoy being in our environment. We would love to see grandparents, aunties, uncles, kaumatua join our kindergarten community, maybe read a story to the children, share knowledge of our town or just have a cup of tea or coffee while the children enjoy playing and learning. Robyn, Ireen, Christie, Jodi, Alva and Emma Patea Kindergarten - 4 Derby Street, Patea. Open Monday - Friday 8.30am – 1.30pm Taking enrolments now for children aged 2- 6 years of age.
