Patea Community Board Meeting
The recent Annual General Meeting of the fishing club was held on May 6; it is now 40 years since the club bach was opened by the Hon. V. Young on 20 May 1978. Fred Patterson is now 94 years young, and a long time Patea resident, former President and Life Member of the club. He has fond memories of the involvement he and his wife Monnette had. She was secretary for many years and was also awarded Life Membership. "They were good times'' he said, ''it was a very active club with lots of really well organised fishing events''. Volunteer and skilled labour was applied to the task of building this bach with members, mostly from the Patea Freezing Works, contributing their time and talents. Many hurdles were crossed before the building was completed, thanks to Maurice Langdon who completed the plumbing when a contractor let them down. This club is one of few with their own club beach bach property which has been tidied up over the last three years. Fisherfolk and others are able to enjoy the wonderful beach at Waiinu and a quiet ale or two with a barbeque under the outside shelter. The old railway carriage is still a feature. The bach has been well used over the years and, if walls could talk, would tell many a fishy story. It is available for hire, contact Colleen 027 447 4889. The club faces the same challenges as other small clubs but is active, having competed in three interclub events and three local club events in the past year. New members are welcome. Contact Alan for more information. Officers for 2018-2019: Club President: Alan Hone 027 452 8989 Club Captain: Gavin Coveny 027 393 4495 Weigh Master: Alan Dowdle Secretary/Treasurer: Glenys Ellett and Gail Buckeridge Bach bookings / Publicity: Colleen Dimock / Glenys Ellett The bach has seen forty years of fun and fishing, what stories will the next forty years bring?

The third meeting for the year was held at the Kakaramea Hall. Present were: Patea Community Board members; Ruth, Olivia, Dianne & Jacq, Rob Northcott (Patea Councillor) Claire Symes (Community Development Manager), Ross Dunlop (Mayor), Phillippa Wilson (Corporate Services Group Manager), & several members of the public. The Open Forum began with: • Update on Patea Youth Trust. They had AGM on Tuesday 27 March and have elected a new committee and hope to continue, with a fresh start. • The future of the Patea Old Folks Association, and their Hall is uncertain, with low numbers on the membership making the running of it difficult. They have their AGM on Tuesday 8 May and will be having discussion on its future. The NZ Bishops Foundation want to bring a nation-wide initiative to Patea for senior citizens. It is a day of various activities including exercise. Some interested locals went to a day they held in Opunake recently and think it could work well in Patea. • Allan Caple from Patea Community Patrol updated us on this valuable organisation of volunteers in our community, which has now been going just over a year. They have their first AGM on Sunday 3 June at 7.30pm at the Patea Old Folks Hall, all welcome. Two Patrol members were on guard at the Patea War Memorial for a 6-hour shift each, from 6pm ANZAC eve till 6am ANZAC Day. Last year the crosses were pulled out before Dawn Parade, so they wanted to stop this offensive act this year. This was much appreciated by the RSA. Allan also told us of a recurring issue of young people doing wheelies on the grass behind the Grandstand at Dallison Park in Waverley. Residents who live nearby need to call the police or Community Patrol as soon as they hear cars there, so this can be stopped. • Kate Williams and Liz Cook from Whenuakura Playgroup have made an application to the Patea Community Board fund for the refurbishment of their toilet area. This is a big project that they are managing well, and we were happy to help them. Patea Golf Club have also made an application to the fund. • Bronwyn Wattrus presented a letter she wrote to Council/Comm Board after a tourist to Patea went for a walk on the Patea River Walkway, after seeing it advertised in the Taranaki Walkways Guide, only to find it in a very untidy, overgrown state. Councillor Rob has written a submission about this very issue and will be presenting it at the Long Term Plan on 10 May. We want the Council to take an active part in its maintenance, the volunteers that created it over 10 years ago have moved on to other things General Business was • Lighting is up and running at the Patea Domain. Patea Rugby are playing their first night game under lights in over 20 years against Okaiawa on Friday 4 May. • The Cement tower on Council land, at the bottom of Bedford Street is going to cost $23,000 to remove and tidy up the ground. We find this price astronomical. We have asked the Council to revisit this issue. • Taranaki Mental Health Expo being held Wednesday 16 May from 6-8pm at the Hawera Club • Claire also spoke of the progress of the new trees to be planted in Waverley Streets, to replace the dying cabbage trees. Claire and Dianne spoke to every business owner on the main street, last month and made a spreadsheet of the feedback. Most of them want native trees planted in place of the cabbage trees, not Melia’s like have been specified. • Phillippa updated us about the Harbour endowment fund, they have had legal advice on whether the interest can be used for things other than maintenance of the sea walls – unfortunately not. Patea Golf Club, which is on Harbour Board land were wanting some funds for a new mower.
