ANNUAL REPORT fy 2022

Dear Trojan Catholic Family,

I pray that this annual report finds each of you in the best of health and in great spirits!

This past year has been an incredible year of God’s grace, as evidenced by your charity, and the progress of Jesus’ mission here on the campus of The University of Southern California. Indeed, within these pages, it is my desire that you too are inspired by the great work of God through our ministerial care for our students, our outreach to students who have yet to know God, as well as our extended ministry to our wider community.

We are reminded that we are all beneficiaries of God’s charity to all His children and that we always receive more than what we deserve! This is found to be true nowhere else than in the gift of the Eucharist—the gift of the very body and blood of Jesus Christ. Strengthened by the Eucharist, the energy and hope of our discipleship is renewed as well as our commitment to our apostolate. Our community has grown considerably through our devotion to the Eucharist and it is evidenced by the growing number of students who make daily visitations to the Blessed Sacrament, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament both in the morning and the afternoon, Sunday Mass, and Masses during the weekday! Among all this activity, there is a growing number of non-Catholics who join us for Mass and the many activities of the Catholic Center daily. Why? The answer is simple: because Christ authentically lives here.

We could not do any of this without your support both spiritual and financial. Yes, BOTH are needed. We are 100% donor supported and cannot move our apostolate forward without your support. What makes your support for us different from other organizations? We undergo a financial audit each year to underscore that your support is stewarded well. Our finance committee (comprised of the best in the world of finance, real estate, and economics) help to ensure the financial integrity of our mission. Finally, each donation that we receive is counted as financial support for USC.

May Mary, our hope and seat of wisdom, continue to pray for us and help us to draw closer to her Son.

With every fatherly affection, I am

Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Fr. Richard Sunwoo Pastor

Joseph B. ’22 remembers his first visit to the Caruso Catholic Center and being impressed by the sacramental presence. “I was a senior in high school and the other school I was looking at was a Catholic university. But the Center here had more offerings of Mass, adoration, and reconciliation than that school. Other things also stood out, but that alone told me it would be a good place for spiritual grounding and nourishment.”

Joseph’s early years on campus were not easy ones. “My last year of high school was this mountaintop experience. When I came to USC it was like everything I had going for me was stripped away. The only thing the Lord didn’t take away from me was a community. If not for the Catholic Center, I’m sure I would have dropped out of USC.”

Of all the many opportunities Joseph has taken advantage of at the Caruso Catholic Center, his student Bible study has been his most treasured experience. “On a weekly or even daily basis to have an experience with our Lord… to be reading the Gospel and sharing it with your brothers in Christ… it’s invaluable.”

In August, the Iowa native graduated with degrees in computer engineering and computer science. Looking back, he marvels at how his faith has grown over the past four years. “I had a lot of formation in high school and was skeptical that a Catholic Center at a university like USC could challenge me in my faith the way it has. Without it, my faith might have been closeted or put on hold. My time at USC would have been entirely different. Instead, I’ve grown tremendously in faith and related nuances.”

Sophie K. ’23 remembers sitting in Mass and being struck with realization. “It was hitting me that the Catholic Center was more than a church or a place where I go to worship God. It’s a symbol of home… of family… a place where I could truly be myself.”

A junior business major from Orange County, California, Sophie knew she wanted a college community that would support her in values and personal growth. At the Caruso Catholic Center, she felt welcomed and loved without being pressured to become a certain type of person.

Highlights of Sophie’s involvement over the past two years include choir— “Not only do I get to come to liturgies and Mass, but I get to sing here as well!”—and student Bible study. “As I was growing up, Bible study seemed rather bland. Here they’re such a time of community! We eat popcorn. We laugh about our weeks. We learn more about God in a way that really connects to our present lives and with what we’re going through. Even on weeks when I’m tired and don’t want to go I hear something that really speaks to me.”

“The transition from high school to college is huge, let alone moving from home and building a new one here,” Sophie continues. “For me, the Caruso Catholic Center is the perfect foundation for building my home at USC.”

STUDENT HIGHLIGHT

Joe has been an example of Catholic dedication, perseverance and leadership.

Joe worked tirelessly to recruit alumni and friends, including Rick Caruso, to share his vision for a new facility. Joe was instrumental in helping raise more than $36 million for our project to build the new Our Savior Parish and USC Caruso Catholic Center.

WHY I GIVE

My name is Joe Boskovich, Sr. and I had the privilege of being the Advisory Board Chairperson for the USC Caruso Catholic Center and Our Savior Church for 10 years. I have also served as a trustee of USC for the past twenty years.

I am a third generation Californian. I was brought up in a close Croatian family where service, hard work and education were priorities. My wife Gail and I are both USC graduates. I earned my B.S. and MBA from the Marshall School of Business. We are the proud parents of five children, four who have also graduated from USC. I have always cared and supported my faith, family, and USC. I continue to serve on the USC Caruso Catholic Center Advisory Board and I have served since its inception.

The reason I said “yes” to leading the Advisory Board during the building campaign is that I envisioned building a new Church and Student Center that would better suit the Catholic Trojan Family and the surrounding community. This is a welcoming place and a Home away from Home for students to learn about their faith, have service opportunities and form a thriving Catholic Community on the USC Campus. USC provides the excellent academic education, and Our Savior Church provides the spiritual nourishment needed by our college age students. This is the reason I give.

I am grateful that I am able to support and give back to my faith and University.

Joe and Gail donated the eighth of our magnificent Beatitudes stained glass windows in the church “BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO ARE PERSECUTED FOR THE SAKE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, FOR THEIRS IS THE KINGDOM OF GOD.” The view in the center distance is towards a farm on the California coast in tribute to the Boskovich family business. Also, portraits of Joe Boskovich’s parents as well as his granddaughter are incorporated into the window. The Croatian coat of arms is shown on the stole of St. Stephen. The NEW TESTAMENT scene is of the Stoning of St. Stephen ACTS 7: 55-57 with California native flora- California Fan Palm, Mugwort, Checkerbloom, Giant Coreopsis, Big Leaf Maple, and California wild rose. The OLD TESTAMENT scene is Joseph Sold to Slavery GENESIS 37: 27-28 with California native plants Bush Anemone, Beavertail Cactus, Palo Blanco tree, Deer grass, California Fan Palm and California Fremontia. Also portrayed are Saint Nikola Tavelic [the first Croatian Saint] and Saint Joan of Arc.
