Welcome Home
WELCOME TO THE CATHOLIC TROJAN FAMILY!
First, I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all as we begin a new academic year at USC. hope you had a wonderful summer and are settling in little by little. realize that new living arrangements, schedules, classes, and people screams “high stress!” so be assured of my prayers for you in this time of transition. Second, allow me to introduce myself.
My name is Father Matthew Wheeler, and am the new Administrator of Our Savior Parish and USC Caruso Catholic Center. am grateful for the friendship and guidance of my predecessor, Fr. Richard Sunwoo, in helping me navigate my own transition over the last few months. He’s been an incredible shepherd for all of you and am humbled to continue and build upon the good work he’s done in recent years.
As begin my ministry at USC, I’ve been praying with Holy Father’s reflections about Jesus, the Risen Lord, inviting his disciples to return to Galilee (cf Mark 16:7). Pope Francis writes: “To go to Galilee means, first, to begin anew. For the disciples it meant going back to the place where the Lord first sought them out and called them to follow him. The place of their first encounter and the place of their first love” (2021 Easter Homily). think these words touch my heart because my Galilee is USC. It was as a student here that the Catholic faith my parents handed onto me became my own. It was here that encountered Jesus and His love for me in a deep and personal way. It was here that found the support from my friends in faith at the USC Catholic Center. Ultimately, it was here that Jesus called me to entrust myself to His plan for my life and follow Him as a priest. Praised be Jesus Christ!
Friends, USC is my spiritual home – my Galilee – and I’m so excited to come back and begin this new ministry. look forward to getting to know each one of
and we are so
have no doubt that
be an amazing year as we open our
to
and grow together. As we embark on this new journey together, let’s keep each other in prayer and abandon ourselves to the intercession of Mary, our Mother. May she wrap all of us in her mantle of love and draw into deeper communion with Her Son, Jesus, and one another. God bless and FIGHT ON! Peace, FR. MATTHEW
