The World of Insects
In Preschool, students learned all about the creepy crawly insects around us. Students found ants on a tree outside of school and created a habitat for them, examined an ootheca (the egg case produced by some insect species), took a close look at crickets before feeding them to their bearded dragon pet, and observed caterpillars moving through their lifecycle toward metamorphosis. The highlight of the study was their trip to the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum where they participated in a workshop titled Bugs Alive and loved experiencing the Butterfly Haven.
The Academic Experience
3D Building Design
During their “Building” unit, Junior Kindergarteners learned what an architect does, analyzed various types of structures, and created their own structures out of a wide variety of materials. To incorporate Education Technology, students used an iPad app, Blox 3D Jr., to explore the aspects of a design without surrendering to physical limitations, noting that architects must plan for all sides of a structure (often four walls, top, and bottom). They also used the Google Earth app to see what buildings look like from above, including Catherine Cook.

Stories of Small Moments
After reading a variety of stories about small moments in people’s lives, Senior Kindergarteners discussed what they noticed and got to work on their own stories. Students learned many writing tools to create an interesting story, including using exclamation marks to show emotion, creating dialogue with speech bubbles and quotation marks, using “describing” words to add detail, and building suspense by adding an ellipsis. Proud authors were thrilled to share their stories with families during a special publishing party.
La Chenille Qui Fait Des Trous/ La Oruga Muy Hambrienta
1st Graders enjoyed completing an interdisciplinary project based on Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar. In World Languages, students read the classic story’s translations in Spanish and French before making their favorite food visuals from the book in art class, including drawings, sculptures, paintings, and collages. They then recorded a digital mini book with their own French/Spanish narration, spelling, and original illustrations.

The Academic Experience
2nd & 3rd Chicago: Past & Present
In many cases, a topic of learning builds from one grade to the next, such as the 2nd and 3rd Grade units on Chicago. In 2nd Grade, students built a time machine to travel 400 years back to 1623 Checagou (present day Chicago), named after the word for “onion” used by the indigenous Potawatomi people. They learned the techniques and materials needed to build dome-shaped homes called wigwams and researched the Potawatomi’s relationship with nature, aspects of their daily life, hunting and gathering techniques, and their eventual forced movement out of the area by European settlers. This understanding prepared them for 3rd Grade Research Workshop, where students did a deep dive into three important aspects of Chicago. First, students studied our city’s history following the arrival of non-Indigenous settlers, including Jean-Baptiste Point DuSable’s trading post, Fort Dearborn, the Great Chicago Fire, and the World’s Columbian Exhibition of 1893. They then learned about Chicago’s government, including what city taxes pay for, how our new mayor was elected, and what his office can do. Finally, students explored our city’s incredible architecture, including the introduction of the steel skeleton construction method and scale models of 15 famous Chicago buildings.

Abstract Expressionism
4th Graders learned about action painting and the Abstract Expressionist movement, in which artists challenged conventional styles of painting by focusing on the act of painting rather than the finished product. Students looked to Jackson Pollock, Kazuo Shiraga, Sam Gilliam, and Helen Frankenthaler for inspiration, then began to pour, smear, and splatter paint onto an unstretched canvas. They were not afraid to get their hands dirty and move around the canvas as they explored color, texture, and space in this exciting style of painting!
Ancient Civilizations
In humanities class, 5th Graders enjoyed studying ancient civilizations such as Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, the Mayans, the Aztecs, and the Incas. After familiarizing themselves with their selected civilization, students in each group chose a broad topic to study - such as architecture - then each group member chose a more granular topic to study deeply - such as homes or bridges. Students then created museum exhibits on their topics, which included dioramas, board games, theatrical productions, digital tours created in Scratch, and more.

Applying Scale Factor
In math class, 6th Graders studied ratios and used proportions to solve problems. To demonstrate their knowledge, students used scale factor to determine how to proportionately enlarge a square from a comic strip onto a large piece of paper. Students enjoyed taking a fun, visual approach to these mathematical principles.
7th & 8th
Frontiers in History
After completing months of research and preparation, 7th and 8th Graders were thrilled to showcase their History Fair projects around the theme of “Frontiers in History” this February. Students presented their projects to family, friends, and judges in a variety of ways, including exhibits, documentary videos, websites, and performances. After the judging process, 14 projects moved forward to the Chicago Metro History Day, with nine projects proceeding to the Illinois History Day event. Three students received a 3rd place finish at State in their respective category, and one student, 7th Grader Avani Nandi, received a 1st place finish to advance to the National History Day event in Washington, D.C. Avani ultimately finished in the top 10 nationally and received a special award for Latino American History. Congratulations!

CONGRATS TO THE CLASS OF 2023!
The final week of school was a celebration of the Class of 2023, including traditions like a day at Six Flags Great America, the Middle School Awards Ceremony, and the 8th Grade Enrichment Showcase and Celebration of Graduates, culminating with the Graduation Ceremony on Friday, June 9. We welcomed back alumni, who gifted each graduate with a special Catherine Cook School pin to signify their new membership in the Alumni Association. Middle School faculty then shared their memories and well wishes for graduates before leading a procession to the Mark Droegemueller Gymnasium. Along the way, graduates shared roses with the faculty and staff who have supported them throughout their academic journey. During the ceremony, we heard special remarks from Chair of the Board of Trustees Michelle Kilkenney, Head of School Lori-Anne Brogdon, Class Speaker Eli Terzis, and Head of Middle School Corrine Stutts. Following the delivery of certificates to graduates, the event concluded with our annual Bridging Ceremony as rising 5th Graders were welcomed into the Middle School. Congratulations to the Class of 2023, and we wish you all the best in the future!

Graduation 2023
INTERVIEW WITH CLASS OF 2023 GRADUATES
Tell us about your first year at Catherine Cook.
Mika: I first joined Catherine Cook when I was in 4th Grade. I remember walking into the classroom, nervous about how I would fit in. It surprised me to discover how welcoming the teachers and students were.
Nicholas: I started Catherine Cook in preschool, but my first memory is from Junior Kindergarten. I fell out of my car in the drop-off line and ended up with a fat lip. I remember the moment, and I’m reminded of it whenever my mom pulls out my JK photos, because it happened the day before picture day! Now I have a memory and a funny picture to go with it.
What is your favorite subject?
Mika: Math and science have always been my favorite subjects. I have a natural tendency towards math because I can quickly understand the concepts and I enjoy the analytical aspect.
Nicholas: Math has always been my strength. You can learn so much about the world when you understand the concept of numbers. You can solve problems that were previously thought impossible.
What do you like best about Catherine Cook’s teachers?
Mika: Catherine Cook’s teachers are always ready to step up when a student needs help on an assignment. They offer good advice while still allowing the student to think for themself. Also, they never hesitate to offer any emotional help. Especially this past school year, when we were going through the high school process, they were quick to support us.
Nicholas: Catherine Cook’s teachers are always open and kind in any situation. They help you through situations related and unrelated to schoolwork. They are a guiding light that you can always count on to help you through a tough time.
What has been your favorite experience or project in school?
Mika: My favorite experience this year has been Seacamp. It was not only a fun, educational trip where we learned about marine biology, but it also allowed students to actively participate. It was fun to be able to partially experience the life of a marine biologist, especially with friends.
Nicholas: In 4th Grade science, our final project of the year involved designing your own experiment based on a wonder or interest that you had. My group made a rocket from a film canister, baking soda, vinegar, and water. In some cases, our rocket went 15-20 feet in the air! It was such a fun experience, and it was very memorable for me.
What clubs, athletics, and other extracurricular activities keep you busy after school?
Mika: This past school year, I danced in the Pre-Professional Division at
Next year, Mika will attend Walter Payton College Prep and Nicholas will attend Latin School of Chicago.
MIKA MATSUYAMA & NICHOLAS FREY

Joffrey Ballet, and I am studying piano in preparation for the Royal Conservatory of Music’s Level 9 Practical Piano Exam. I was accepted into Walter Payton’s Advanced Mixed Choir I and Advanced Orchestra, so I am facing a tough decision on which one to choose for my Freshman year, but I look forward to being more involved at Walter Payton through my interests and curiosity.
Nicholas: Hockey is my favorite sport. I have played with the Chicago Stallions for over eight years, and I plan to continue to play hockey in high school. I have also been playing the piano for as long as I can remember.
What are you looking forward to in high school?
Mika: Walter Payton provides numerous opportunities for students to explore their interests, such as the enrichment time offered at the end of every day. Enrichment time is an opportunity for students to join different clubs/teams and potentially discover their passion. These include academic clubs, art clubs, volunteer clubs, and fun clubs such as watching movies.
Nicholas: I am mainly looking forward to meeting new people and having new opportunities. The thing about Catherine Cook is that I have gone to school with some of the same people
for 11 years. That isn’t a bad thing, but I think it will be exciting to meet new people. I will also be able to try new things in high school and pursue new passions.
What advice would you give to a new Catherine Cook student?
Mika: I would recommend students to not stress as much during Middle School. Working hard is still important; however, the stress of overthinking every assignment and wondering whether it’ll receive a good enough grade can start weighing on you. Looking back, I wish that I would have let myself enjoy the Middle School experience more.
Nicholas: I would advise them to be themselves. Catherine Cook is a welcoming and inviting place that accepts everyone for who they are. There are a lot of amazing people who will want to be your friend if you give them a chance. Once you find your friends, the place will open up to you. You will feel that you belong.
What do you want to do for a career?
Mika: I am still undecided about my exact career; however, I am interested in the medical field and hope to become a doctor. I would like to be able to help others and potentially change the lives of countless individuals.
Nicholas: I want to be an engineer, because you use problem solving skills to address situations that affect you and likely others as well. Another reason I would like to be an engineer is because it goes back to math, which is my favorite subject.
What does Catherine Cook mean to you?
Mika: Catherine Cook is the place where I have witnessed many students grow not just academically but also as a person. It has also given students the opportunity to meet friends that they will keep for years after they graduate.
Nicholas: I have been going to school at Catherine Cook for 11 years. It has been a part of my life for such a long time. I will always remember Catherine Cook and the impact it has had on my life. It has pushed me academically and has also made me more socially engaged. Most importantly, it has made me more confident in what I do every day.

THE CATHERINE COOK JOURNEY: BUILDING A STRONG FOUNDATION
By Roger Liew and Suzie Desai, Parents
of Rohan ‘23 and Sonia ‘20
When we first learned about Catherine Cook School back in 2005, it was at a friend’s dinner party who happened to invite his neighbor - the then Head of School, Dr Michael Roberts. Little did we know at that time that Cook and its community would have such an extended and positive impact on our family - beginning in 2009 when our daughter, Sonia, started Preschool and three years later when her brother, Rohan, joined her.
Over these last 14 years, we’ve greatly valued what the school and its community have offered our kids and family and are grateful for the impact that the school has had on all of us. We are so fortunate that the school was able to meet each of our kids’ unique needs as they’ve gone through the important early years of school where so much of the social and academic foundation and development takes place. There are so many great aspects of Cook, but the few areas that really stand out for us are the teachers, the project-based learning approach, the unique experiences, and being part of this great parent and school community.
The dedication and support from Cook teachers are first rate and what we have valued the most. The teachers have been interested in learning about and knowing our children, and what motivates each of them, to personalize their approach. They are caring and interested in pushing our kids to be the best versions of themselves. We appreciated the continuous feedback
on our children’s development through the years – especially on areas we didn’t get a chance to see at home.
More specifically, the teachers, along with the administration, had the ability to see what classes and what types of teachers and environment each child would respond to best. As an example, our son was disappointed with his class assignment
At each grade, our children’s teachers were able to meet their needs and challenged them in appropriate ways. We recognized how teachers approached teaching and learning as our children matured and transitioned from Early Childhood to Lower School to Middle School with topics and themes growing in sophistication and requiring more advanced thinking and work. As a result, both our children are prepared and have the foundation for the more intensive work of high school and beyond.
at the start of 8th Grade, as his good friends from the prior year were not with him. He ended up having a great academic year, became friendly with classmates he hadn’t known as well, and realized that he could still socialize with his friends at lunch and recess. He also recognized that it was a great learning experience for him, particularly as he understood that the teachers were trying to create the best learning and social environments for him.
Cook’s project-based learning through all the years of school was great at keeping our children engaged and helped them learn to think and communicate rather than just memorize facts and complete worksheets. This started early on from learning about cultures, foods, and music from countries in Africa in Early Childhood, to too many projects to even name in Lower and Middle School, but that built on each other culminating in larger projects like the National History Fair project that provided increasingly more responsibility. As part of the project-based learning, we know that incorporating technology and innovation is an evolving aspect of education, and we appreciated the school’s willingness to consider ways technology might impact education and what happens in the classroom while bringing awareness to its impact on the social development of our children.
Another aspect of the school that we have valued is the unique Cook experiences.
14
18
5th Grader Sonia (left) and 2nd Grader Rohan on Halloween in 2016
Both our kids were involved in sports as well as other school-based activities and After School Adventures. Specifically, Future Problem Solvers is a fun way to think about sophisticated topics while also working on writing, speaking, and creative skills. Another experience is the Friday school assemblies that bring the entire school community together and encourages students to get comfortable being in front of an audience and practice public speaking (which also occurred over the years through presentations of projects to parents and the wider school community). Book Buddies is another way the school helps to build community across ages and classes. Our daughter was fortunate to participate in Global Issues Network and traveled abroad to Peru as she and her classmates began
The Catherine Cook Journey
to think about how they might address big societal problems. The various Middle School signature trips to places like Camp McLean and SeaCamp are also a way for our kids to have fun, build school community, and learn and interact with others outside of the Cook community.
The school community - including the teachers, staff, administrators, parents, and students - is also something that we as a family have appreciated. It’s been great to get to know this group over the years and learn together through various school initiatives like the Parent Education Committee, involvement with the Board of Trustees, and working on DEI initiatives including the year-long SEED program. These were unique ways we were able to help contribute to building our school
community and culture, meet other families across age groups, and have discussions of what it means as parents and a school community to raise our kids to be thoughtful classmates and citizens in a complex world beyond Cook.
We have two very different children, and we believe Catherine Cook provided both of them with the tools and foundation to be successful academically and socially, and to become young adults who want to learn, engage with others, and solve problems. It’s been wonderful to be part of this community. We will miss the daily involvement but hope to stay in touch in the years to come as the school continues to build and grow on its foundation.

INTERVIEW WITH KIRAN MATHEW CLASS OF 2019
Tell us about your first year at Catherine Cook.
My first year at Catherine Cook was in 6th Grade. It was daunting, not only because I was a newcomer to the school, but to Chicago as well. I remember it was incredibly easy to make friends and find my place within the school community, and I felt so empowered by my teachers. When my friends and I planned a protest downtown, a number of teachers came out to march with us - they believed in us so fiercely.
Who was your favorite teacher?
Ms. Niketopoulos was my 6th Grade humanities teacher, advisor, and my absolute favorite teacher. Even though I was young, she made me feel like my voice was just as important as anyone else’s. She helped me navigate my anxiety disorder with compassion and understanding, and her low-key sense of humor kept things lighthearted while still setting a high bar for her students. She really helped my love of writing flourish.
What was your favorite subject?
I was always a humanities kid. Writing was - and still is - how I express myself, process difficult emotions, and connect with the world around me. There was also a heavy emphasis on current events and staying informed, which I feel was incredibly impactful in teaching me media literacy and critical thinking skills while following the news.
What was your favorite experience or project in school?
I really loved the Food for Friends program in 8th Grade. Service and volunteerism are so important to me, so taking time out of the school day to serve people facing food insecurity was incredible.
Mathew
Francis W. Parker School Class of 2023
New York University Class of 2027
What was the high school placement process like for you?
I remember feeling stressed about the high school placement process, but Mr. Pryce was phenomenal at helping me through it. He talked with each student about how they were feeling, what schools they liked, and the whole process. We were also able to talk to Cook alumni about their own experiences, ask questions, and envision ourselves at their respective institution.

Interview with High School Alum
What have been your favorite things about high school?
One of my favorite things about high school is our student government. I was head of the Pride Committee my Sophomore year, and this year I was head of the Music Committee, in which I curated a diverse collection of music to play in the hallways between passing periods. Being a committee leader was really rewarding and made me feel so connected to my community.
What is your proudest accomplishment in high school?
Something that sticks out in my memory is a world literature project where we wrote flash fiction stories, with an element of society flipped on its head. I wrote one about a universe where the majority religions of the world worshipped Ancient Greek and Egyptian deities. My teacher asked if she could read my draft anonymously to the class as an example, and I was grateful and surprised that my peers were so interested by my writing. It encouraged me to continue creative writing.
What is your favorite subject in high school? Do you want to pursue that in the future?
I’m still very much a lover of English and history classes, however, I took two electives that helped me further hone in on my interests for the future. I loved exploring the mind and brain in my psychology class, and my civil liberties class focused on the Constitution and
the Supreme Court. We conducted mock trials, debated constitutional dilemmas, and brought in lawyers to help us prepare for our in-class projects.
How have you stayed busy during your high school years outside of the classroom?
Aside from student government, I’ve enjoyed writing for every issue of Parker’s literary magazine, SCOUT , since Sophomore year. I truly love our vibrant community of authors, journalists, and poets. I was also chosen as one of six student leaders to attend the NAIS Student Diversity Leadership Conference in 2021 and 2022. I participated in authentic dialogues about race, identity, and belonging with thousands of students.
What college will you attend? Do you know what you will study?
I’m incredibly excited to be attending New York University next year. Right now, I’m leaning towards a degree in psychology, but all the adults in my life keep telling me that you often find new and unexpected passions in college, so I’m trying to keep an open mind.
What do you want to do for a career?
I’ve been really interested in pursuing a career in law after simulating real-life cases in my civil liberties class and participating in debate and mock trial. I think a degree in psychology could lend me a powerful perspective
when examining the law and its direct intersection with society and interpersonal behavior.
What does Catherine Cook mean to you?
Catherine Cook will always hold a special place in my heart. In a way, it was the school that introduced me to the city. Cook instilled in me the values of courage, compassion, and good citizenship within both my local and global communities. I was surrounded by teachers and friends who truly cared about me and supported me, and I’m forever grateful for the experiences I had at Cook.

Tell us about your experience at Catherine Cook. I attended Catherine Cook from Preschool until 8th Grade - essentially my entire younger life. I remember having such a unique experience at Cook, with opportunities unlike anything else.
Who was your favorite teacher?
My favorite teacher was my French teacher, Mr. Lelo. French was my second favorite subject, because of Mr. Lelo. We learned so much that I was able to apply outside of Cook. I felt like I was really advancing at a secondary language. I didn’t realize it as a kid, but it’s so important to understand another language. I still recall most of my teachings from him to this day.
What was your favorite subject?
My favorite subject was math, mainly because I excelled at it. I’ve always enjoyed STEM-related subjects.
Where did you go to high school and what was your favorite experience or project?
I went to Jones College Prep. My favorite experience was the engineering program. I was able to take four years of engineering classes in high school, which set me on the path to become an engineer.
What was your favorite activity outside of school?
My favorite activity outside of school was playing sports. I played basketball, soccer, and volleyball throughout my time at Cook and high school.
How did your experience at Catherine Cook prepare you for your high school?
Cook offers advanced courses that set me on a great path for the intensity of high school. I remember feeling really prepared my freshmen year of high school because of what I learned at Cook.

Interview with College Alum
how to code far before anyone else was, and at a much younger age. This is critical in today’s technological society.
What advice do you have for current Catherine Cook students?
My advice for current students would be to explore what piques your interest and engage in your passions. No matter if you fail or if it gets hard, stay persistent. And specifically to younger girls who love math and science - take advantage of the amazing STEM opportunities at Catherine Cook and use those to accelerate your career in STEM. Sometimes as a woman in STEM, you’ll find yourself outnumbered. Always remember that your ideas are just as valid as anyone else and to never give up.
What college did you attend, and what did you study?
I just graduated with both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in electrical engineering at Illinois Tech.
What kept you busy outside of class?
I was highly involved in extracurriculars, including time served as President of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Chair of the Finance Board, and a member of our NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Team.
What do you hope to do after college?
I’ll be working as an account manager in tech sales at Keysight Technologies. Although my degree is highly technical, I’m far more interested in engaging with organizations and people.
What does Catherine Cook mean to you?
Catherine Cook was a cornerstone in my early age development. It offered opportunities far more advanced than any other institution at the time. I know when I left there were more developments in the STEM curriculum. That’s something I’ll always remember - we were learning
