PORTRAIT OF A GRADUATE | 2021

Chair, Board of Trustees Dear Catherine Cook Community, As we reflect on the 2020-2021 school year, I want to applaud our community’s bravery, fortitude, grace, and integrity. Despite the many challenges and constantly changing landscape brought on by the pandemic, I could not be prouder of this community’s ability to adapt and focus on providing students with a vibrant Catherine Cook education. Let us continue to celebrate the achievements of our administration, our educators, our parents and, most of all, our students. Graduates, as you leave Catherine Cook, I encourage you to seek more truths, to learn more about the world around you, to inspire others, and to continue to lead by example in the footsteps of the graduates who went before you. This last school year provided you with opportunities not available to your predecessors. Faced with issues of social justice, you were forced to learn, understand, and even value differences in families, in communities, and in the world at large. When shutdowns affected the economy, families in our school community, and those around us, you had to reflect on others’ needs and show grace to those who had less. And finally, when we had to distance, minimize gatherings, and cancel parties, sporting events, and school activities, you developed resilience that will serve you as you move forward into high school where you will be challenged academically, socially, and morally. That resilience, embedded deep within you, will push you forward to live with purpose. For those things and many others, I celebrate you, the 8th Grade Class of 2020-2021. To parents, administration, educators, and the greater Catherine Cook community, on behalf of the Board of Trustees, I say thank you. Unlike many other schools, our school year began with in-person learning. We started in a hybrid learning model and, over time, we added days and ended the year with all our students attending in-person instruction every day. We owe gratitude to our creative and hardworking faculty and administrative team that led the charge to successfully deliver an educational program that met the needs of students regardless of the teaching method. Our gratitude also extends to our staff, the dedicated few who set up and maintained our facilities and supported the diverse needs of our community. As we look ahead, armed with an indelible foundation unique to Catherine Cook and strengthened by incredible experiences this year, we will continue the strategic planning process initiated in January and led by our Strategic Design Team with representatives from the trustees, administration, faculty, staff, and parents of Catherine Cook. We appreciate the contributions to date and will continue collaboratively to preserve the academic and service principles of Catherine Cook and inform and energize our initiatives in the future. Again, congratulations to the Class of 2021! We welcome you into our alumni community and look forward to all you will accomplish as you live your purpose. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I extend my warmest gratitude to our entire community for your commitment to Catherine Cook. Have a wonderful summer break, and I look forward to seeing you soon. Sincerely,

David Laurenson Chair, Board of Trustees

The Middle School Experience

Science Exploring Invertebrates

Designing investigations based on observation and data interpretation are a huge part of our Middle School science curriculum. This year, 5th Graders studied invertebrates, animals without backbones. Our scientists were thrilled to learn that invertebrates make up 95% of all the animals on Earth! During a special science lab, students closely observed cicadas using digital microscopes, where they learned to identify and take up-close photos of structures common to insects, like the sensilla (tiny hairs used for sensing) and the mandible (the mouthparts used to gather materials and prey). Students continued their extensive study of invertebrates, branching out to other groups like mollusks, sponges, and jellyfish.

Math

College & Career Project The Middle School math curriculum is designed as a four-year program that culminates with students taking a high school level Algebra 1 Honors course in 8th Grade. During the final weeks of 8th Grade, students research a career of their choosing and the education required, then simulate the financial aspects of their college education and first five years after they graduate. Students research the projected cost of their education based on current inflation trends, accrue the average amount of student loan debt, and then begin their lives with the typical starting salary for the career they’ve chosen. Using Microsoft Excel, students consider monthly budgeting, credit and debit cards, saving and investing, and other financials as they choose an apartment, pay off their student loans, and attempt to save enough money to live for a year without a job, should they unexpectedly lose it.

Enrichment Makey Makey

6th Graders combined visual arts and music using a Makey Makey, a small circuit board that turns physical objects (like students’ artwork) into buttons that can create a response on a computer. Initially, a homework assignment tasked students with creating abstract drawings that blended elements such as line, shape, color, and texture. The next day in class, their drawings became an extension of their computer’s keyboard. In order to generate power to their artwork, students used Alligator Clips to connect various elements of their artwork to the circuit board. When the element is then

Humanities Historical Fiction Using literature, our humanities curriculum guides students to explore significant themes of justice to create critical thinkers and agents for positive social change. Over the spring months, 7th Graders read Chains, a historical fiction novel by Laurie Halse Anderson. Chains tells the story of Isabel, a thirteen-year-old, enslaved girl fighting for her and her younger sister’s freedom during the American Revolutionary War. The story takes place mainly in New York City from 1776 to 1777. Although fictional, the text provides a glimpse into American history through the eyes of someone whose age resembles many of our 7th Grade students. The book fueled many classroom discussions around human rights, social justice, and racial inequality. After reading the book, students worked in small groups to create a map of 1776 New York City to help set the stage while retelling the story.

touched, the computer thinks a keyboard key is being pressed and responds accordingly. With the Makey Makey Piano and Bongo app, students were able to play piano and drums by simply touching their drawings.

INTERVIEW WITH CLASS OF 2021 GRADUATES SCARLETT KOENIG & SOLOMON MEGHIE Next year, Scarlett will be attending Francis W. Parker School and Solomon will be attending Saint Ignatius College Prep. Tell us about your first year at Catherine Cook. Scarlett: I came to Catherine Cook in 1st Grade, and my teachers were Mr. Sutter and Ms. Bressler. I was really quiet, but that first year helped me with branching out and making new friends. I remember that I didn’t know how to tie my shoes, so Ms. Bressler taught me the bunny ears technique. Most of my current friends were actually in that 1st Grade class. Solomon: I came to Catherine Cook in 4th Grade. My teachers in my first year were Ms. Kitson and Ms. Towsley. I also enjoyed meeting Mr. Weinberg, who was the Head of Lower School. They were all great and taught me a lot. I also made a lot of friends!

12

What is your favorite subject? Scarlett: My favorite subject is humanities, because I love to read and write. I’ve had great humanities teachers over the years and my favorite topics like Greek mythology, social justice, and theology have been taught in those classes. Solomon: My favorite subject is science, because I enjoyed the labs and different lessons. Some of my favorite labs included simulation labs using Gizmo, the chicken wing dissection project last year, and our unit where we all chose a planet to research and create a poster on. I picked Jupiter!

Who is your favorite teacher and why? Scarlett: My favorite teacher was my 2nd Grade teacher, Ms. Herron. Her class is the class I remember the best in Lower School. She was always really kind to me and did a really good job at making learning engaging. Solomon: My favorite teacher was Mr. Troher because of his great teaching style and connection to each and every student. Mr. Troher took the time needed to help every student.

What has been your favorite experience or project in school? Scarlett: My favorite project in school was

PORTRAIT OF A GRADUATE | 2021

Interview with Class of 2021 Graduates a math project that we did in 4th Grade about measurement. We brought cardboard boxes and fabrics and miniature items, and we designed mini rooms, which we actually built. Solomon: My favorite project at school was our College and Career Project in math. It was our end of the year project for 8th Grade and taught me a lot. It taught me how to budget, how taxes work, student loans, and much more. Another great thing was that Dr. Edmonds helped each student out with their project.

How was the high school application process? Scarlett: The high school application process was pretty good for me. I wasn’t really trying to get into a public school, so I didn’t have so much pressure on my placement tests. I think Catherine Cook did a good job preparing me for the application process. Solomon: The high school application process was very difficult, but I think my entire class survived. Mr. Pryce and all of my teachers helped us all get through it.

What are you looking forward to in high school? Scarlett: I’m looking forward to meeting new people and having the opportunity to branch out a bit more. I’m really excited to get a chance to have a new beginning of sorts. Solomon: I am looking forward to practicing independence, since I will have the ability to decide my own classes and choose my schedule and make it more flexible. I am also looking forward to the variety of after school activities, including athletics. I hope to join the track team.

Solomon (right) collaborating with friends on a 5th Grade humanities project.

What advice would you give to a new Catherine Cook student? Scarlett: I would say that you should try your best to stay organized. It really helped me throughout my years here to make sure that I had all my stuff and, particularly in math, it was so helpful to have easily legible math notes. Another thing that helped was actually using a planner or some kind of notes or list system to keep track of homework. Solomon: My advice for a new Catherine Cook student would be to not be afraid to ask for help. Asking for help is very important and can make your school experience much better.

What do you want to do for a career? Scarlett: I’m really unsure, but I’m interested in the computer science field as well as finance, business, and medical science. As of right now, I’d like to do some kind of research in the medical field, possibly cancer research but I’m still pretty open about it. Solomon: I don’t know quite yet, but I would like to have some career in the medical field.

What does Catherine Cook mean to you? Scarlett: Having been here for eight years, it is a place that I will always remember, and is so meaningful to me. This school has watched me grow up and I’m going to remember Catherine Cook and all that it has taught me for a really long time. Scarlett learning about tsunamis in 5th Grade science class.

Solomon: Catherine Cook means diversity, kindness, and great education. I learned a lot from my time at Catherine Cook and will keep those skills as I move on in life.

INTERVIEW WITH REESE WILSON, CLASS OF 2017

Tell us about your experience at Catherine Cook. In the beginning, like anywhere, it was scary and exciting going to a new school. Shadowing another student was so helpful. The student made me feel like I was a part of the school even before I was accepted at Catherine Cook. During my early school days, I was a typical pre-teen roaming around the corridors, adventuring from the lunchroom to the second floor and up to the rooftop. Aaahhh, the rooftop! The best place to be! The grounds helped us develop socially, mentally, and physically. It was a place where we could run wild and free (and we did) - not think about what assignment was due or anything work related. The teachers were kind, stern and gentle, and formed you into being a better person from the lessons you learned. My first year was filled with a couple of encounters which forced me to toughen up at a young age, but molded me into a better person. With the support of the virtuous educators, I embraced my talents and soared at Catherine Cook. My memories are filled with heartfelt moments with my best friends, Ethan and Jessica. Without friends, you miss out on that extra love. Who was your favorite teacher and why? By far, I must say that Mr. Freed was my favorite teacher! He was always compassionate, dedicated and student oriented. Mr. Freed continuously provided me with extra guidance when he noticed I struggled. His kindness created a more comfortable environment for me at Catherine Cook, especially when things were challenging. When I think about choosing one person as a beloved educator, I just cannot. Ms. Kruse definitely falls into the same category. She, too, made Catherine Cook an exciting place to learn. These two individuals always had a plan to help students succeed. No matter what the trial, they seemed to have a love of their work and students. THANK YOU MS. KRUSE AND MR. FREED for assisting in my success! What was your favorite subject and why?

Reese Wilson Culver Academies Class of 2021 Howard University Class of 2025

20

Math was my favorite subject at Catherine Cook, because I found it exciting that there wasn’t always just one way to get to an answer. I felt a sense of self confidence when teachers asked me to answer questions I could attack. A light bulb goes off when you hit that correct number and there’s nothing like the feeling of “Yes, I got this!” It pays off when teachers recognize your perseverance and reward you for keeping at it. I received a math award for my dedication to getting better at math. What was your favorite experience or project in school? Middle School History Fair was always my favorite time of the year. I can vividly remember creating a website on The Black Panther Party with my friend, Uelia. It was a lot of work, but it was all worth it. Being judged by visitors and faculty made us feel as though what we

PORTRAIT OF A GRADUATE | 2021

Interview with High School Alumna did was important and mattered. I felt as though I was competing for a very important award. As a young student, the excitement of this fair generated curiosity and gratification. It always drove me to create perfect work due to its importance in our road to life. I enjoyed our three-day getaway trips - they were awesome developmental times for me. It gave us opportunities to be silly with ourselves and teachers. What was your favorite activity outside of school? My passion is and always has been golf. Whenever I wasn’t in school, I enjoyed going to the golf course with my dad and working on my golf game to improve myself. We had a lot of amusing and entertaining periods. He is a very dedicated dad, so he was always creative keeping our time on the course interesting. My goal has always been to play collegially, so I knew I had to stay focused. What was the high school placement process like for you? How did Catherine Cook assist you in the process? The high school placement process was very smooth. Since 5th Grade, I always knew I would attend Culver Academies. I had tunnel vision once I saw their amazing campus, great education and golf opportunity. However, I did entertain what other schools had to offer during Catherine Cook’s High School Fair. In doing so, Catherine Cook was very knowledgeable and provided many opportunities for me to investigate potential areas of interest during this event. It put me in contact with department heads and students that could answer my questions. I found the school fairs to be an informative and effective way to meet current students attending the schools. Getting questions answered from a student that was going there answered questions from their perspective - not an adult. I felt more connected to the process that way. Mr. Pryce and others were always great with positive affirmations. Mr. Pryce was knowledgeable about the schools and would go out of his way to put me in contact with the necessary source or people to get the best school fit. His connection with Mr. Gallaway at Culver made things easier with high school placement and made things less overwhelming.

Reese (second to the left) and classmates at the Chicago Sky Deck in 8th Grade. Culver has provided much opportunity to learn, grow and lead. They have challenged what I thought I knew to what I now know. My life feels almost fulfilled. Walking the Culver grounds, passing a fellow student; working in groups on projects and assignments, hashing things out back and forth; being the dorm chair, peer coach, and other leadership opportunities that have graced my path in ways that I could never dream to understand. Mentoring wonderful girls has caused me to appreciate being able to give of myself and not to be selfish. I have gained many opportunities from going to Beijing, Hangzhou, and Shanghai in China during my sophomore year. I have travelled to further countries and feel enriched. What is your proudest accomplishment in high school? I would say my proudest moment at Culver would probably be placing fourth at the IHSAA State Golf Finals. During my senior year, I was ranked number one in Illinois and number thirty eight in the world. This was an extremely difficult triumph to attain. What college will you attend? Do you know what you will study? I plan to attend Howard University in Washington, D.C., to study Marketing or Economics.

What have been your favorite things about high school?

What does Catherine Cook mean to you?

Since I attended a boarding school, my excitement comes from a different perspective than a regular highschooler. Reflecting on my four years, my favorite experience would be the lifelong friendships and bonds I’ve made with my friends who are filled with rich, diverse backgrounds (Russia, Canada, Nigeria, China, Mexico, etc.). What we continue to learn from each other is unique like nothing else.

To me, Catherine Cook means “the beginning.” It is where I began my stages of development. It’s where I fostered my strength, molded my foundation, and toughened up my spirits. Where I experienced teacher love and support. Where I leaned on guidance and positive direction.

CATHERINE COOK SCHOOL 21

INTERVIEW WITH BLAKE STAMATO CLASS OF 2014

When did you come to Catherine Cook, and how were your first experiences? I was pretty young - when I was 18 months old, I participated in Ms. Penny’s toddler class. My early memories at Catherine Cook, from Kindergarten through Lower School, are all great. I enjoyed my classes, had excellent teachers, and made great friends. What was your favorite subject and why? My favorite subject was math. Catherine Cook did an excellent job in teaching us how to approach math and made certain that we had a solid foundation for high school. Dr. Edmonds, who was my Middle School math teacher, is one of the best instructors I have ever had. He was very effective in presenting difficult materials and concepts in an easyto-understand fashion, but always made sure to challenge us and, at the same time, let us know he was there to provide guidance if we had questions. I felt prepared for high school math and have taken several advanced math courses in college. Who was your favorite teacher and why This is a tough one. I had excellent experiences with all my teachers at Catherine Cook. One that will always stand out is Ms. Wortinger (4th Grade). Ms. Wortinger went above and beyond as a teacher. She made every day in the classroom fun and was an excellent teacher. And my all-time favorite teacher is still Coach Kris Haines (even though he played college football at Notre Dame). Coach Haines is/ was excellent in motivating students and emphasizing the importance of teamwork and determination. He gave me a strong foundation on the importance of giving your best effort and having fun. I attribute a lot of my high school successes in rowing and baseball to Coach Haines, and also believe his lessons have helped as I have managed through challenges in academics and at work. Where did you go to high school and what was your favorite experience or project?

Blake Stamato Saint Ignatius College Prep Class of 2018 University of Southern California Class of 2022

I went to Saint Ignatius College Prep. My favorite experiences in high school were playing baseball, participating on the school’s rowing team (where I was able to compete at the national level), and making friendships and connections with friends that continue to grow stronger over time. What was your favorite activity outside of school?

22

Sports and music. When I was at Catherine Cook, I was involved with hockey, lacrosse, and baseball programs. I also played drums and played in the Middle School band.

PORTRAIT OF A GRADUATE | 2021

Interview with College Alumnus What keeps you busy outside of class? Are you in any campus organizations, sports, etc.? I was involved with the USC Economics Club and served on its Executive Board. In my free time, I like to golf and travel around the west coast with friends. What kind of career-related work or internships have you completed?

Blake dressed up as a pirate for Halloween in 2004. How did your experience at Catherine Cook prepare you for high school? Learning public speaking skills and the importance of being prepared when making presentations to a group prepared me for high school. Speaking in public is a challenge for almost everyone, but after leaving Catherine Cook, I realized how well the teachers had made sure we had the tools necessary for conveying your point to a larger group.

I have completed internships in the finance/tax group for a privately held company that is in the wholesale distribution of food and beverages and have also worked for a property management firm. I am currently working as an intern at a commercial real estate brokerage and services firm based in California. I am living in Orange County, California, this summer, which is my first full summer away from Chicago. What do you hope to do after college and why? What is your career path? I plan to pursue a career in real estate

investment management or on the development side. I have had a strong interest in real estate, urban planning, and architecture growing up, and with my real estate classes at USC, am excited to enter the industry. I may stay in Southern California, but I will also explore opportunities in Chicago and London (my favorite city). What does Catherine Cook mean to you? Catherine Cook is always like home. I enjoyed all of my time there - the teachers, my friends, and the challenges and opportunities all helped me develop into who I am today. What advice do you have for current Catherine Cook students? Follow your gut instincts, don’t be afraid of challenges, and pursue your extracurricular opportunities and interests. Find a good balance between work/study/fun.

What college do you attend, and what are you studying? I attend the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, California. I am pursuing dual degrees in economics and real estate development.
