PORTRAIT OF A GRADUATE | 2022

Chair, Board of Trustees Dear Catherine Cook Community, I write this year as a parent and Board member with renewed hope, deep gratitude, and sincere joy. Over the last two decades, our students experienced more changes and challenges than most children will experience in their lifetime. They had to embrace the digital age, understand concepts of social justice, and endure a global pandemic that changed the way they learn and communicate. I am amazed at how well our community responded to these transitions and how together, we have evolved to ensure the success of all our students. Just recently, we unveiled Catherine Cook’s Strategic Plan to take our school into the next chapter. Our redefined values - centered around community - emphasize curiosity, compassion, and connection. Thank you to all of our community members for your helpful feedback as we seek to advance the mission of our school. Watching our graduates cross the stage this year was particularly poignant for me as Board Chair. The most obvious reason was my youngest graduated, marking the end of our family’s 21 years at Catherine Cook. We are is profoundly grateful to the teachers, coaches, staff, and administration who served at Catherine Cook during these years. You have made all of us better people. To the Class of 2022, please know it was a pleasure watching you mature over the last 11 years. I am proud of your commitment to seek knowledge, be guided by innovation, and lead by example. As you transition to high school, do not lose your excitement for new opportunities, keep growing your passions, and most importantly, leave your mark by making a difference in whichever school community you have chosen. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I extend the Board’s warmest gratitude to our faculty, staff, and our families for your commitment to Catherine Cook. Have a wonderful summer break, and I look forward to seeing you soon. Sincerely,

Dave Laurenson Chair, Board of Trustees CATHERINE COOK SCHOOL 3

suppliers, tribal leaders, legal representation, weather deities, documentarians, and a saboteur. During the simulation, students collaborate within and between groups to solve realworld problems such as natural disasters, recession, political unrest, climate change, territory disputes, refugee crises, and arms proliferation. Throughout this challenging social setting, students are inspired to hone their problem-solving skills while understanding what it means to be a strong leader, effective negotiator, and active listener. Students “win” the game when all crises are solved, and global prosperity is achieved.

To encourage students to learn more about one particular segment, the science department partnered with the AV Studio so students could create their own podcasts! Students were allowed to choose a topic that intrigued them or something they wanted to explore further. Topics included string theory, sending animals to space, women in astronomy, the history of Earth, and more. After writing their scripts, students recorded their podcasts in the AV Studio’s new soundproof recording booth. Using Audacity, they learned how to edit their recorded audio to produce podcasts to share with their classmates, teachers, and families.

INTERVIEW WITH CLASS OF 2022 GRADUATES ROMAN BERKOWITZ & ISLA VARELA Next year, Roman will attend Jones College Prep and Isla will attend Regina Dominican High School. Tell us about your first year at Catherine Cook. Isla: I came to Catherine Cook in 1st Grade. I was in Ms. Kruse’s class, where we did a lot of hands-on learning. I was welcomed into the community of inclusive students that became my friends. They didn’t hesitate to make me feel at home. Roman: My first year of Catherine Cook was in Senior Kindergarten. I don’t remember much because of how young I was, but I do remember making new friends and having fun.

What is your favorite subject? Isla: I really enjoyed humanities at Catherine Cook. I’ve found U.S. history, reading, and writing interesting, and my teachers found fun ways to engage us. Roman: My favorite subject was whatever enrichment we had because we could find ways to express ourselves. I enjoyed the time in the IDEA Lab the most because all the technology we used is so intriguing.

Who is your favorite teacher and why? Isla: My favorite teachers are Dr. Edmonds and Mr. Peek. I looked forward to their classes and they both have incredible teaching styles. Dr. Edmonds and Mr. Peek

12

build great relationships with their students as well as devote time for one on one help. Roman: My favorite teacher is Mr. Kruse because we have a lot in common, like playing the guitar. He is one of the funniest and nicest people I’ve ever met. At the time, I wanted to be a comedian, so we also had the humor aspect in common.

What has been your favorite experience or project in school? Isla: My latest memory of a favorite project was the College and Career project we did towards the end of 8th Grade math. I enjoyed this project because it was specific to how I wanted my life to play out and required a lot of individual work.

PORTRAIT OF A GRADUATE | 2022

Interview with Class of 2022 Graduates Roman: My favorite project was probably the lamp project I got to work on with my partner, Miles. We created a basketball hoop lamp, which we gave to our basketball coach, Dr. Edmonds.

How was the high school application process? What are you looking forward to in high school? Isla: The high school application process was very difficult for me, but we were fortunate enough to have Mr. Pryce through it all. He helped with answering our questions and provided so much assistance while we went through the challenging process. As I go into high school, I look forward to new opportunities and relationships as well as showing more independence. Roman: The high school process was a little stressful, but nothing I couldn’t handle. It was a lot of work, but it paid off. I am looking forward to making new friends, exploring downtown, playing in a more challenging basketball league, and being in a more diverse community.

What advice would you give to a new Catherine Cook student? Isla: I would recommend advocating for yourself, because it will work out better in the long run. Whether it’s bettering your social or academic experience, it is very important to use your own voice. Roman: I would say to work hard during the high school admissions process because it pays off. Studying and being tutored are the main things which helped me get the results I was hoping for.

Isla at an assembly in Lower School.

How has Catherine Cook prepared you for high school, college, and beyond? Isla: Catherine Cook has taught me self-management and organizational skills that will most definitely benefit me in the long run. Roman: It has shown us how to use technology and work in groups. Catherine Cook has always used project-based learning, so now we are prepared for making future projects such as presentations, creating projects in whatever occupation we pursue, accomplishing huge assignments for high school and college in the future, and more.

What do you want to do for a career? Isla: I’m not quite sure yet, but I am interested in the medical field. I hope to continue down that path, possibly into Orthopedics or Pediatrics. Roman: I would like to be a music producer in the rap industry. I like to create beats and mix/master recordings.

What does Catherine Cook mean to you? Isla: After 8 years at Catherine Cook, I have seen others, as well as myself, grow in a variety of ways. I received a great education, met so many amazing people, and built wonderful relationships.

Roman practicing for a school performance in 4th Grade.

Roman: Catherine Cook is a place where I developed all sorts of skills, so Catherine Cook means a lot to me because it set me up for my future. We have developed skills such as being able to handle our emotions, being a moral person (ROARSy), and obviously learning math, science, etc.

INTERVIEW WITH SHEA MORONEY, CLASS OF 2018

Tell us about your experience at Catherine Cook. My first year at Cook was when I was two years old and in the transition program where I would spend half a day in class with my dad, and gradually throughout the year the parents would leave. It was a great way to get the little kids ready and excited for school.

Who was your favorite teacher and why? My favorite teacher at Cook was Ms. Kossiakoff. She really pushed and inspired me to pursue my interest in science and presented many opportunities in and out of the classroom to explore science.

What was your favorite subject and why? My favorite subject has always been science. From Mr. Simeon’s magnetism unit to Ms. K’s biology unit, there are so many cool aspects to explore, and I have always been fascinated by every one of them.

What was your favorite experience or project in school? I really enjoyed my time in Global Issues Network (GIN). I was given the opportunity to learn with my peers about topics we were passionate about and then go share my knowledge with people from around the world. It was such a cool and unique experience, and I would recommend every student try to be a part of such a life changing group.

What was your favorite activity outside of school? I played four sports throughout Middle School, but my all time favorite was basketball. My teammates and coaches, including Mr. Haines and Mr. Sutter, were so kind, and it was a great environment.

Shea Moroney The Latin School of Chicago Class of 2022 University of Vermont Class of 2026 20

What was the high school placement process like for you? How did Catherine Cook assist you in the process? I wouldn’t be where I was if it wasn’t for the amazing Mr. Pryce. He really guided me through the high school placement process, making each step easier than I could have ever expected. He makes connections and relationships everywhere and really knows how to advise each student individually. Then

PORTRAIT OF A GRADUATE | 2022

Interview with High School Alumna he follows each of his alumni, no matter where they are located, and stays updated on our achievements and successes. He is so genuine and devoted; he is just really amazing.

What have been your favorite things about high school? Though my time in person was interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Latin has provided me with some great experiences. I have been able to explore the world through their Project Week program, in which I was able to teach math to elementary students in Trinidad as well as canyoneer in Moab, Utah. Additionally, I have met such an amazing group of people and teachers that have been with me every step of the way in my high school journey and helped me grow into the person I am today.

What is your proudest accomplishment in high school? One of my proudest accomplishments in high school was being named an “Iron Roman,” an award given to athletes who complete 12 seasons of sports (played a sport every season for all four years), while successfully maintaining high grades in the rigorous course load. Along with this, I have been very proud of my work with the Latin Lacrosse program, which I helped start and later lead as a captain for two years.

Shea (middle) with sisters Teagan ‘22 (left) and McLean ‘20 (right) at Shea’s high school graduation in 2022. How have you stayed busy during your high school years outside of the classroom? I participated in volleyball, basketball, and lacrosse throughout my high school years, which kept me very busy. Additionally, I enjoyed supporting other sports teams, so I spent a good amount of time attending their games when I could find the time.

What is your favorite subject in high school? Do you want to pursue that in the future? My favorite subject has always been science throughout high school, but I especially enjoyed biology. I will be pursuing this love when I am studying biomedical engineering at University of Vermont next year.

What do you want to do for a career? I would love to work in the research field of biomedical engineering, creating medical devices to help the administration of immunotherapies.

What does Catherine Cook mean to you? Cook has given me many friendships, experiences, and life lessons that I still carry with me today. Shea (forground left) in action during a match on the Latin Lacrosse team.

CATHERINE COOK SCHOOL 21

INTERVIEW WITH AARAV GOEL CLASS OF 2017

When did you come to Catherine Cook, and how were your first experiences? I came to Catherine Cook when I was just 3 years old, so I don’t remember much except for playing with other kids and the floaty toys in the small water table we had.

What was your favorite subject and why? My favorite subject was definitely IDEA class. I always had an inclination towards STEM and art, so when a class standing for Innovation, Design, Engineering, and Art was introduced, it was naturally a good fit for me. IDEA introduced me to 3D modeling and 3D printing. Throughout high school and college, I have found my early exposure to these concepts to be a unique advantage in classes and extracurriculars.

Who was your favorite teacher and why? My favorite teachers (I can’t pick one) were Dr. Edmonds and Ms. Folger for math, Ms. Dawn for art, and Mr. Martinez for Spanish. They all fostered different but important skills that were the foundations of what I am learning today. Mr. Martinez also sparked a lot of my enthusiasm about technology through conversations outside of class. I also have to give credit to my science teachers, English teachers, and PE teacher. I loved them all.

Where did you go to high school, and what was your favorite experience or project? I went to the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools for high school. My favorite experience there was the Formula 1 Club where our team built miniature F1-inspired drag race cars. It combined design and engineering with some business and marketing. I loved it. My primary role was CAD engineer, though due to the small size of our team, everyone played a

role in everything.

What was your favorite activity outside of school? My favorite activity outside of Cook was drawing, something I’ve not stopped doing since I was a child. My teachers, friends, and family all encouraged my artistic talent, and
