As I write this letter, the country has just elected a new Government following a 14-year tenure by the Conservative party. Our new Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer sent out a clear message that the work to get the country back on track must start immediately. We need fresh action to help bring the construction sector back to the forefront of investment. The anticipated 300,000 new-build homes will provide a good source of painting and decorating work both for smaller firms and the country’s national contractors.
Writing this report mid-way through the year, there are mixed feelings in the state of our own sector. Many indicators such as consumer confidence indicate that demand across many sectors remains subdued. However, speaking to some of our Members, many in the Midlands and Southern regions appear to be swamped with work, whilst the further north we go, work seems not to be as abundant.
A long-standing SME company in Leeds stated that the number of domestic enquiries has been the worst they have experienced in many years. Let’s hope with a new government in power, the economic growth and work situation will improve. We know that it won’t be an overnight fix, but it would be good to see changes in policy.
Any support and lobbying we need to do, whether directly, or via our membership of Build UK, will be actioned to strengthen our sector’s visibility. We are your Trade Association and only exist to serve you, the Members. We always appreciate the positive feedback we receive, and it really motivates us at HQ, but please do tell us how we can serve you better, via the services we offer. There is always more we can do, but we need to know your thoughts.
A number of you joined us for the 35th Anniversary of the PDA Premier Trophy Awards. What a magnificent day was had, and even the weather was glorious for the whole day! IAN WILLIAMS LTD WINS JOHNSTONE'S TRADE AWARD
IAN WILLIAMS outstanding work at Devonport Dockyard has been recognised with the Commercial & Industrial Johnstone’s Trade Paints Painter of Award at the 40th anniversary event. Philip Jones, Painting Operations Director, and Mark Rawlins, Plymouth Business Manager, accepted the award on behalf of the company, marking a significant achievement in the industry.
Ian Williams Ltd, a PDA Member firm, was commissioned for extensive external works at the Devonport Dockyard, including the thorough preparation, cleaning, and redecoration of the iconic 152-foot chimney. This vital structure plays a crucial role in
maintaining the operational efficiency of HMNB Devonport, the largest naval base in Western Europe, by facilitating the venting of steam used in dockyard operations. They utilise specialised products tailored for different sections of the 152-foot structure, such as Duraprep 88 for cleaning and PPG Hi Temp and Sigmacover 435 for painting, ensuring durability and longevity in the maritime environment.
Collaboration was key to the project’s success. Ian Williams partnered with Jem Scaffolding, leveraging their expertise to provide safe and efficient access to the chimney. This collaborative effort highlighted Ian Williams commitment to delivering high-quality results while prioritising safety.
The project faced unique challenges to working at such heights and in a maritime environment. Adverse weather conditions, including high winds common near coastal areas, involves constant monitoring and adaptation of work schedules to ensure the safety of the crew and the integrity of the project. The team’s proactive approach included the installation of an Anemometer to monitor wind speeds, work would be put on pause if the winds exceeded 20mph. The implementation of a temporary power supply to support equipment, demonstrating their dedication to overcoming challenges through new solutions.
Safety remained paramount throughout the project. Ian Williams implemented strict safety protocols, including the establishment of extended safe zones to protect the team and properties below the work area. Despite logistical limitations and initial concerns from stakeholders about space usage, Ian Williams maintained their commitment to safety standards, ensuring a secure working environment for all involved.
Philip Jones, Painting Operations Director, commented, “Receiving this prestigious award is a testament to the
hard work and dedication of our team. We are honoured to contribute to the maintenance of such a critical facility.”
Mark Rawlins, Plymouth Business Manager, added, “Winning this award reflects our ongoing commitment to delivering exceptional results. It motivates us to continue innovating and providing the highest standards of service to our clients.”
Ian Williams continues to set benchmarks in commercial and industrial painting services, offering tailored solutions to meet the diverse needs of their clients. Their reputation for reliability, innovation, and safety highlights their position as a leader in the industry.
Ian Williams is a renowned provider of painting, decorating, and maintenance services across commercial, industrial, and residential sectors. With a rich history of delivering high-quality projects, Ian Williams combines technical expertise with a commitment to sustainability and safety.

ADVICE for our Members
WHEN YOU NEED TO REPORT WORKPLACE INJURIES
THE HEALTH AND SAFETY Executive (HSE) has published updates to its guidance and online reporting forms to help businesses in England, Scotland and Wales to understand how and when to submit a report of a workplace injury, incident or dangerous occurrence under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR).
RIDDOR applies both to employers and companies that use self-employed contractors, such as self-employed painters and decorators and other trades. The HSE guidance can be found at www.hse.gov.uk/riddor – Different legislation and guidance in relation to reporting applies in Northern Ireland.
The updated HSE guidance on RIDDOR does not include any changes to legal requirements, but provides additional guidance on whether a report is required, as well as improved guidance on who should report under RIDDOR.
The guidance also details what is meant by a ‘work-related’ accident, information on when an occupational disease is not reportable, and increased clarity on when an ‘over-7-day’ absence should be reported. The employer, or the person in control of the premises where a reportable injury or incident occurs will need to make the report in respect of the employee or self-employed person.
Over-7-day incapacitation of a worker
The most commonly reported accidents in the workplace are those that result in being away from work, or unable to do normal work duties, for more than seven consecutive days as the result of injury. This seven-day period does not include the day of the accident, but does include weekends and rest days. The report must be made within 15 days of the accident.
The HSE guidance states that where the worker’s injury or condition does not become apparent until sometime after the accident, it must be reported as soon as it has prevented them from doing their normal work duties for more than seven consecutive days.

Over-3-day incapacitation of a worker
Accidents must be recorded where they result in a worker being away from work, or unable to do their normal work duties, for more than three consecutive days.
Employers in Great Britain don’t need to report this type of accident, recording it in the employer’s accident book (under social security law) will be sufficient. However, employers in Northern Ireland need to report ‘over-3-day’ incapacitation.
Non-fatal accidents to people other than workers
Accidents to members of the public or others who are not at work (such as customers or clients) must be reported if:
• they involve work activity carried on at the premises
• they result in an injury
• the person is taken directly from the scene of the accident to hospital for treatment to that injury. However, there is no need to report incidents where people are taken to hospital purely as a precaution when no injury is apparent.
Other reportable circumstances
Specified workplace injuries, occupational diseases, deaths, gas incidents and dangerous occurrences must also be reported by law and it is a criminal offence to fail to do so.
MASTER YOUR BUSINESS TAX
GETTING YOUR HEAD around business tax can be tough.
Getting your taxes wrong could prove to be costly which is why taking the time to ensure you file your taxes right is key when running a successful business.
Remember, you don’t have to go it alone. Working with an accountant is a great way to ensure that your business tax records are organised and up to date. If you can’t give these records to HMRC, you may be liable to pay fines or penalties of up to £3,000 per tax year and further legal action could be taken against you. That’s why keeping accurate tax records is essential for small businesses.
How long do you have to keep records?
The length of time that businesses are required to keep tax records for varies depending on the type of business

and the type of records they keep. For self-employed people or individuals that are registered as part of a partnership, you must keep your tax records for at least five years from the 31 January following the tax year that the tax return is related to.
For businesses registered as limited companies, or businesses which pay corporation tax, tax records must be kept for six years from the accounting period end.
Thankfully, you are able to keep your tax records in a digital format which could include saving them on computers, USB drives or even secure cloud storage. As long as records are complete and in a readable format, you are not required to keep physical copies of relevant documents.
What records do you need to keep?
When it comes to keeping tax records for HMRC, there is no definitive list of exactly what documents you need to keep hold of. Furthermore, the requirements differ depending on the nature of your business.
Employees (such as company directors) also need to keep records for any benefits they have received, as well as records of income from employee share schemes or
other share related benefits. They should also keep general financial records such as bank statements, statements of interest, records of dividends and any other ‘out-of-the-ordinary’ income such as inheritance.
Businesses should always keep records of all business expenses. These are important as some expenses may be tax deductible and therefore may reduce the amount of tax you owe. Records for expenses include things like receipts and invoices as well as other bills and contracts
If you are claiming a mileage allowance for business travel, then records of all journeys need to be kept which include dates, the distance travelled, addresses visited and the purpose of the business trip.
It is crucial that you keep records of your business income alongside your expense records.

“There are only two certainties in life...” – Well now there’s a third: Technology! Whatever your views, it’s becoming essential for many businesses to embrace and below Claire Purbhoo summarises how and why.
EMBRACING TECHNOLOGY IN YOUR BUSINESS
What technology do we need?
As you grow and develop your business you are increasingly likely to come up against a number of resource constraints, whether that is your productive capacity or having enough customers to sell to. Technology can help you find ways of optimising those resources and get more out of what your business has already, in order to grow the number of products, services and customers.
Mindset shift
There are various ways in which the mindset shift can be dealt with – perhaps it is an incremental approach, a department at a time, or an update across the whole business in one go. Done right, businesses can make significant advances in a relatively short period of time.
Financial investment
The financial investment should be viewed as exactly that – an investment, not a cost to the business. The longterm gain of adopting and embracing technology gives many benefits – real time and critical business information, forecasting, KPI monitoring, business performance and so on. All of this data in turn helps the business to grow and to ensure a business remains on track to achieve its strategic and performance objectives.
Choosing the right technology
There is a lot of technology and apps available – but SMEs need to start with the basics and understand what is required from technology to improve performance and help them grow. We have worked with many clients to review business needs and the technology that will help meet objectives.
Technology also gives staff and businesses the gift of time to focus on running and growing the business by ‘plugging’ resource restraints and creating capacity for more jobs as the firm grows.
For further information contact hello@azets.co.uk and one of their local team will get back to you.
Operational structure and staff
There is a misconception that technology will take away jobs, however that is not necessarily the case. Technology is an enabler for growth as it takes away the mundane, administrative tasks, allowing staff to focus on other activities that drive the business.
Next steps
If you haven’t reviewed your processes recently or are not sure where to start your technology journey please contact us at hello@azets.co.uk and we will ensure our local team gets back to you promptly.
Claire has worked with SMEs and owner managed businesses for over 20 years, helping them produce their financial data more efficiently via digital solutions, either supporting the internal team or as an outsourced finance function.

A PPRENTICE OF THE Y EAR C OMPETITION
MARKING 35 YEARS of the Premier Trophy Awards, the nationwide challenge for painting and decorating apprentices began in March this year with four heats taking in students from the length and breadth of the country.
The first regional heat took place at North Kent College with competition judges PDA Chief Executive, Neil Ogilvie and Andrew Davis of the Association of Painting Craft Teachers (APCT) keeping a close eye on not only the end results but all aspects of the work being carried out.
Neil said, “2024 is a landmark year for the PDA which celebrates 35 years of the Premier Trophy Awards and Apprentice of the Year competition, as well as the 130th anniversary of the Association itself.
“The event at North Kent College was an excellent day, with both junior and senior apprentices really demonstrating their skills as well as taking the opportunity to network with their peers. Apprentices really value this experience, which is sponsored by Purdy Professional Painting Tools and supported by AkzoNobel.”
Simon Willins, Head of Curriculum, Construction and Built Environment at North Kent College said, “We were
delighted to host the Southern Heat of the PDA’s Apprentice of the Year competition, in our dedicated construction facilities here at our Gravesend campus.”
Heat two took place in April with Accrington and Rossendale College hosting 13 apprentices battling it out in the newly refurbished workshop.
Simon Whitaker, curriculum leader for painting and decorating at Accrington and Rossendale College said: “The Apprentice of the Year competition has taken place here at Accrington for the last 10 years, with apprentices from across the region coming here to test their skills against each other.
“This type of skills competition adds the pressure to help them remain focused, concentrate and takes their learning to the next level.
“Here at Accrington and Rossendale College, we’ve just undergone a £3m refurbishment, which has included a brand-new state-of-the-art painting and decorating workshop. We’ve got cutting edge equipment and we’re working really hard to make sure every learner gets the best experience possible.”
It was then up to the City of Glasgow College for the third heat where record of 24 apprentices took part.
Michael McEwan, lecturer at City of Glasgow College said, “This is the second year we’ve hosted the PDA competition, it’s great to see so many talented students taking part in this type of competition. It’s so important to the industry as it showcases the talent that is coming through and the work we do in the colleges as well.”
The final fourth heat moved down to Longbridge Construction Campus of South and City College Birmingham with 11 apprentices battling it out.
Mark Morris is lecturer in painting and decorating there, “The PDA competition challenges learners to tackle, in six hours, a task they might normally have three or four days to work on. They’re also putting their work forward to be judged by experts, so it’s quite an intense experience, but it can give them a huge confidence boost.
“We’re proud to host the Midlands heat, it showcases our college, attracts people into the trade and gives participants the confidence to put themselves out there and move onto the next stage of learning or into employment.”

With the Apprentices from each regional heat now shortlisted, the 16 finalists all converged on Doncaster College, which now provides the workshop facility that allows the Competition to reach this conclusion.
For the ‘Finals’ work scheme, they needed to revive and reuse all the craft skills that brought them to this level of the competition. This challenge would confirm the winners in a way that would prove their abilities beyond doubt.
Neil concluded, “Congratulations got to all our competitors, you are all high achievers. As judges and assessors, we were encouraged to see our industry has a strong future. We base this on the craft skills you have demonstrated across all the heats.”
The overall winners were then announced at the PDA’s Premier Trophy Awards, a glittering ceremony held at Plaisterers’ Hall, London in July.
Senior Apprentice of the Year was confirmed as Jessica Brierley of F Brierley & Sons who attends Accrington & Rossendale College.
Senior runner-up was Kirsten Jackson, currently an apprentice with Bell Group through the Bell Apprentice Training Centre.
The Junior title was awarded to Willow Patey working for Bagnalls and attending MidKent College
Runner up for the Junior Apprentice of the Year went to Owen Sheldon, also employed by Bagnalls and studying at Leeds College of Building
Two special prizes were also awarded to Henry Hart and Holly Duffy in the form of the CEO Recognition & Achievement Award, chosen by Neil Ogilvie for their hard work and commitment to the competition.
The PDA wishes to thank all the colleges for their excellent hosting of the competition and making everyone feel welcome, with a special mention to Glen Galbraith for his workshop provision at Doncaster and to his colleague Vince Shaw for producing the scheme drawings in a professional format.
Thanks also go to Yvonne Dominey-Tay, the PDA’s competition manager for managing accommodation, rail travel and the essential documents that make the whole operation work so well.
Of course a big thank you also to our sponsors, your contribution is highly appreciated and ensures that the competition thrives year on year.

FUTUREPROOFING THE UK DECORATING INDUSTRY
“The decorating industry is facing a number of challenges, but it is also filled with possibilities. By forming partnerships across the industry and moving forwards together with strong initiatives, we can support the sector to truly thrive”, says Guy Butterworth, Managing Director of Dulux Decorator Centre In this article, Guy explains how collaboration with other organisations can help futureproof the industry...
BETWEEN SKILLS SHORTAGES and the continued bite of the cost-of-living crisis, the decorating community is navigating a number of issues. However, these factors are influencing the trade to transition into an interesting phase, where the future is filled with potential and opportunity.
Filling the skills gap
Decorators’ services remain in high demand, which is great news for businesses looking to ensure a steady pipeline of work. However, the skills shortage is causing concern for many. More than half (55%) of painters and decorators are concerned about this and nearly two thirds (61%) are reporting difficulties finding tradespeople with the right skills.
However, it is encouraging to see that new entrants into the trade have increased in recent years, with 31% of appliers in 2023 having been in the industry for less than five years (an increase from 17% in 2021).
To continue this trajectory, it is key that businesses – including decorators, contractors, industry bodies, suppliers and charities – work together to inspire the next generation to take on roles and appeal to those looking to change careers.
young people with valuable mentorship. It can also help them to identify passionate individuals to welcome into their workforce.
Dulux Decorator Centre has partnered with Volunteer It Yourself and, over the last year, has raised over £35,000 for VIY and supported 300 young people to achieve their City & Guilds accreditation in painting and decorating.
As well as supporting new entrants with opportunities to learn and grow, experienced decorators need to ensure they upskill and remain at the forefront of innovation to help them to continually provide the highest quality service to customers.
Training organisations, such as Dulux Academy, play a key role in supporting the learning and development of those that are new to the industry and already in the trade.
Environmental consciousness
Another big shift over recent years has been the prioritisation of sustainability. The built environment is a major contributor to carbon emissions and waste, generating an estimated 39% of the world’s carbon emissions. However, the industry is on a path to ensuring these figures are reduced.
Apprenticeship and mentoring opportunities play a key role in this. For example, by partnering with organisations like Volunteer It Yourself (VIY) decorators can provide
For decorators, this means switching to water-based products and those with minimal volatile organic compound (VOC) content, opting for durable solutions that will extend maintenance cycles, and responsibly disposing of leftover paint and empty cans.
As a supplier, Dulux Decorator Centre has a key role to play to provide more sustainable product solutions and services, such as water-based paints and free can recycling that can help decorators reduce their environmental impact.
It is initiatives like the British Coatings Federation’s Net Zero Roadmap and ‘Quick Start Guide’ that can help suppliers and other organisations take practical steps to improve sustainability. Read more online at www.coatings.org.uk/page/NetZeroRoadmap
In conclusion, the decorating industry can continue to thrive through collaboration and forming partnerships with like-minded organisations that will help to train the next generation of decorators, upskill the current workforce and support sustainability goals.
Dulux Decorator Centre is dedicated to investing in these areas to support its customers to navigate the challenges the industry is facing and help their businesses to thrive.

CONTAINING PLASTIC WASTE IN THE P&D INDUSTRY
By David Elphick, Account Development & Customer Relationship Manager, Bagnalls Group
THE UK DECORATIVE coatings industry turns an estimated 28,000 tonnes of plastic and metal into paint packaging annually. Unfortunately, the vast majority of this material ends up incinerated or in landfill.
Steve Snaith of The British Coating Federation (BCF) and Lead Consultant to their recycling initiative PaintCare, estimates that the industry gets back less than 5% of metal going into the market, and with plastic, virtually nothing is recycled. Likely less than 1%.
The Problem with Plastic
Plastic waste poses challenges due to its slow degradation and release of carbon dioxide, methane, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Micro and nano-plastics contaminate soil and find their way into waterways and oceans. Incineration emits toxic gases and Greenhouse gases. Greenpeace state that for every tonne of dense plastic burned, more than two tonnes of CO2 are released. The British Plastics Federation report carbon emission savings of 30% to 80% by using recycled plastic as opposed to virgin plastic, so whenever we don’t use recycled material in containers we are exacerbating that environmental impact.
The outlook isn’t all Rubbish
‘End-of-Life’ and the recent decision to also accept any can any brand at their Dulux Decorators Centres has similarly seen an upturn in returned volume.
These nationally accessible recycling networks have streamlined how tradespeople can dispose of their used containers sustainably at no cost. Nationally, Bagnalls reported a rapid increase in container recycling over the past two years, from 21 tonnes in 2021, to circa 44.5 tonnes in 2023.
The UK Government is implementing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and Plastic Taxation to compel industries like ours to address recycling inefficiencies. These legislations hold companies financially responsible for disposal of their branded products and apply charges to products using less than 30% recycled plastic. The objective is more proactive waste collection and increased reuse of material.
Manufacturers have stepped up with customer facing recycling initiatives. Crown pioneered Can Back in 2013, collaborating with in house recycler NIMTECH, accepting container returns from any brand. They have seen a notable increase in participation, receiving approximately 1.4 million cans in 2023, up 40% from 2021. Encouragingly, they received back almost 6.5% by volume of the plastic material put out to the professional market in 2023.
Akzo Nobel account 22% of their carbon footprint to
Challenges persist in reaching the domestic DIY market, though BCF’s PaintCare recycling program aims to address this issue with a nationally visible campaign. The scheme will collect empty packaging from hundreds of sites nationwide, utilising household recycling centres and national retailers, in addition to decorating centres.
PaintCare is currently working on the detailed plan and will decide on the launch of the programme in December 2024.
Circular Solutions - Pack-to-Pack
Crown had been leading the UK market, producing products with near enough 100% recycled plastics since 2018. Yorgos Chalkias, Head of Sustainability at Hempel, Crown’s parent company, tells me, “In 2018 we put the first recycled plastic pail on the market. Five years later, recycled plastic represents 72% of the plastic packaging we put on the market.”
Dulux also report that “Over 94% of packs by volume have 50% or more recycled plastic”. Peter Howard, Sustainability & CSR Lead for Akzo Nobel believes that “plastic could be the most sustainable packaging material for certain paints... If it was more widely recyclable.”
The optimal solution is to reuse our own waste streams. Berry Global, in partnership with Paint360, recently demonstrated a proof of concept for the UK's first
pack-to-pack recycling process. Recovering paint product and packaging materials within a closed-loop yielded savings of approximately 2.8 tonnes of CO2 for each tonne of plastic. This approach would boost carbon reduction ambitions across the industry. The BCF think that by recycling old plastic containers into new plastic containers, a 59% carbon reduction could be expected.
The Chicken and the Egg(shell) Initiatives like PaintCare offer hope for a less polluting decorative coatings industry. Jamie Riley, Divisional Sustainability Manager at packaging producer Berry Global, believes PaintCare “can become, not just European leading, but world leading”.
If PaintCare unites manufacturers, retailers, recyclers, and consumers behind a closed-loop system, we could all play a part in a world leading solution.
But we cannot just wait for this silver bullet to materialise. We must utilise the existing decorator centre collection points which already feed waste into recycling streams. Increasing container returns helps make the case for the huge investment required to advance, scale-up and evolve the UK coatings sector.
Don’t forget, that PDA Members can sign up to the Paint Green scheme, and show customer that they are taking meaningful steps to reduce waste. Find out more at www.paintingdecoratingassociation.co.uk/paint-green

BRADITE A BOON FOR CAFE
BRADITE’S ONE CAN has helped create a bright, airy and welcoming atmosphere in a South Croydon community venture. Boon Café Croydon was conceived, in the words of its founder Georgina Arsalides, as “a space for families to enjoy, a place for groups to meet and new friendships to form.”
The non-profit enterprise has been transformed in appearance thanks to One Can paint, 50 litres of which were donated by Bradite
“While putting together our vision for Boon, we saw Bradite One Can and were able to choose a beautiful sky blue colour in their RAL colour range.” says Georgina.
“Bradite was happy to gift the paint which we are so very grateful for, and the vision came to life.”
Friends joined Georgina to do the decorating, “I was amazed at the coverage and how far the paint went. All the painting
PROUD TO SUPPORT THE CHASELEY TRUST
BREWERS FOUNDATION were thrilled to be able to donate £2,000 to Chaseley Trust, an organisation caring for people with severe physical disabilities through residential, respite, day care and therapy. Based in Eastbourne, East Sussex, Chaseley Trust is very close to Albany House, the Brewers Head Office.
Nestled on the Eastbourne coast, a stately manor has graced the landscape since its cornerstone was laid in 1893. For the last 78 years, it has served as the long-term home for the residents of the Chaseley Trust and is one of the oldest Care Homes in the UK.
The residents at Chaseley Trust have the challenge of living with severe disabilities, a result of neurological conditions and illnesses that have dramatically altered their lives. These individuals, whose average age is 46, face difficulties in performing even the most fundamental tasks we often take for granted. Like Brewers, The Chaseley Trust was founded in Eastbourne over 100 years ago and is an important part of the community. The Chaseley building has been added to and altered significantly over the years, but parts of the original structure still stand. The longevity of the care home, coupled with the effects of sea air had taken a toll on the
volunteers found the paint easy to use and were equally impressed with the two-coat prime and paint system.”
She adds, “We had a quick turnaround of the renovation period, and the fact that the paint dries quickly and doesn't have a strong odour was hugely beneficial. It was great that we didn't have an overpowering smell whilst painting, which made the process more enjoyable and comfortable!”
Boon Café provides a hub for community activity and, in addition to the teas, coffees and tasty cakes, provides space for family storytelling, creative workshops and parties. And the colour scheme has not gone unnoticed.
Georgina concluded, “I have had so many compliments on the colour of the room. People have been asking where it's from, as they want to redecorate their house in the sky blue!”

building and despite providing decorating materials a few years ago, more work was needed to be done so the residents could thrive in an environment they truly deserve.
The day room, The Casbar, where many residents spend their waking hours, has not seen a redecoration since the 1970s and £30,000 had to be raised to cover the costs of professional decorators and paint supplies.
The funds were allocated to hiring professionals capable of repairing door frames, addressing issues with walls and ceilings damaged by water ingress and years of wear and tear. Once the repairs were completed, all the walls in the hallways and common areas were repainted ensuring that the living space of the residents remains pristine.
The residents are thrilled with their freshly decorated hangout! They voted on the colours and the new logo – the lighthouse. The Chaseley Trust were also able to display some historical Armed Forces badges and photos from their first residents, The Chaseley Boys, who moved into the home at the end of war due to their injuries.
The final result is impressive, and we are so happy that the residents can enjoy their refreshed space. To see how Brewers has supported more incredible organisations across the country, please visit https://info.brewers.co.uk/the-brewers-foundation

THE PDA IS a Gold sponsor at this year’s National Painting and Decorating Show, underlining its ‘complete focus’ on supporting the trade.
Neil Ogilvie, PDA CEO says, “At last year’s show one of the strongest points that Members commented on was the value we bring in being available when help is needed. Support and back-up is invaluable, and can make the difference when a Member hits a problem and needs the best support to navigate through it.”
Neil commented that thousands of pounds have been recovered, and hours saved, trying to rectify issues for Members through the PDA’s free legal support programme. There will be a prize draw again this year on the Association’s stand, number 96, as well as giveaways from Associate Members.
As always, giveawa ys and prizes feature heavily thoughout the event, the latest to be announced is from Wagner who will giving away two superb FinishControl 4000 cordless paint sprayers. Everyone who attends the show gets automatic entry into the prize draw.
Similarly, attendees get the chance to walk away with £500 worth of Bradite’s One Can, and for the third year running Ciret will be offering thousands of pounds’ worth of tools and accessories in its great prize draw.

BRISTOL’S OLD MAGISTRATES COURT SENTENCED TO A REDECORATION
DULUX DECORATOR CENTRE is helping to transform the Old Magistrates’ Courts in Bristol, to create a hub for young people in the local area. Working with Creative Youth Network, a charity for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in Bristol and South Gloucestershire, DDC is providing sustainable and durable paint solutions to help turn the Grade II listed building into a space that can be enjoyed for years to come.
Built in 1879, Bristol’s Old Magistrates’ Courts have sat empty for a number of years. As a result, it was in desperate need of a refresh to bring it back to its former glory and make it a useable space once again.
The refurbishment, which is being led by Creative Youth Network and primary contractor Bray & Slaughter Ltd, will see the old courts, which includes four courtrooms with ornate ceilings and original Victorian cells, transformed into a community hub. It will provide young people with a range of facilities including a café, hotdesking space and more, which will help them on their way to a career in the creative industries.
Martin Hancock, Project Manager at Bray & Slaughter, explained, “This is a really exciting project, but also one that has posed a number of challenges. The building contains a mixture of substrates including plastered gypsum and lime plaster-based products. As a result, surfaces across the site require different paints and coatings.
“For example, the external walls are all lime plaster based and require a breathable paint on the interior to ensure that moisture doesn’t become trapped and cause them to deteriorate. However, the internal walls that are made from plastered gypsum don’t require the same breathability and therefore need a different type of paint.”
To help, decorating contractor Optimum called on the Dulux Decorator Centre team to review the specification and ensure that the right paints and coatings were selected for the job.
Richard Morgan, Account Manager at DDC, said, “For the lime plaster walls I spoke to the team at Graphenstone, which has a range of products that are specifically designed for this type of application, and they recommended Grafclean Premium Matt. This is an ecological, breathable, mineral paint that has excellent opacity and coverage, as well as class one durability.”
In addition, to keep the exterior woodwork looking good for years to come, Richard recommended Dulux Trade Weathershield Gloss. It has been specifically developed to give long-lasting, high gloss protection and it provides up to eight-years of weathering durability. It also contains a fungicide to prevent mould growth and help the paint stay cleaner for longer.
George Stone, Assistant Quantity Surveyor at Optimum Combined Services Ltd, said, “As a company, we have worked closely with the Dulux Decorator Centre team for several years, and have used Dulux Trade products across countless projects. The paints are my
personal preference thanks to their reliability and high quality, I trust that they will deliver the finish my clients are looking for.”
The colour of the paint was also crucial to delivering Creative Youth Network’s vision for the space. Richard Morgan worked with the team at DDC Bedminster (Bristol South) to ensure that the products could be colour matched to the client’s preferred tones, including pinks, greens and neutrals. The team also arranged for samples to be sent to site, so that the client could see the colours on the walls prior to the application taking place.
For efficiency and to ensure that all products arrived together and in line with the project schedule, DDC Bedminster arranged the delivery of both the Dulux Trade and Graphenstone products used on the project.
George added, “It was a no brainer using Dulux Decorator Centre for the product supply on this project.
The Bedminster store is under a mile away from the project site in Bristol and this made it exceptionally easy for deliveries.”
The project is due to be completed later this tear, opening its doors to the young people of Bristol and supporting them to become the creatives of the future.

We’re all guilty of it... Something happens, we have an emotional reaction, and we act. Maybe someone says something that riles us and we get cross. Maybe a client makes a change that throws our plans and we’re irritated. Maybe we’ve priced for a job, and when we go to buy the materials they’ve gone up in price.
The power of pausing
BEING RESPONSIVE, NOT REACTIVE
It’s natural and normal to get an emotional reaction, but acting on that right away often isn’t the best way to deal with a situation. It’s usually a good idea to pause, even just for a few moments (or longer if we need to) take our emotions out of the situation, look objectively at it and then respond. The benefits of pausing are not only practical, but can make a significant difference to our mental health.
Count to ten
We all know the old adage of ‘count to 10’ when we get angry, and it’s good advice. That pause allows us to think about consequences, about the reality of a situation, and hopefully, how to respond to it to get the best outcome.
A great example of this is road rage. Lots of people get annoyed at other road users’ behaviour. A couple of months ago at a roundabout a driver mounted a grass verge and came into my carriageway, crashing into the side of my car. Luckily nobody was injured, but my car was a right-off.
I could have got angry, or upset. But that wouldn’t have helped anyone. Instead I rang the police, and made sure the other driver and passenger were okay. The other driver was so upset at his mistake I ended up giving him a hug. The police were great, and I was grateful for their measured and calm response. The incident even ended up in the local paper as something positive!
Pausing to reduce stress
A friend was telling me about how she used to react to situations quite quickly and emotionally, like many of us do. But now, instead of just thinking about the immediate consequences on herself, she now takes a mental step back.
So when a colleague gave her some constructive criticism at work, she had that immediate emotional reaction, but took a breath, saw that the colleague was not only right but being helpful, and she smiled and thanked him. She’s said that doing this on a regular basis means she’s happier at work, and feels a lot less stressed.
Better Business Decisions
In our own businesses, stuff doesn’t go to plan all the time. We’re doing an exterior and it rains. Sometimes we feel like ranting at the clouds and just buggering off home. In winter, paint or filler can take an age to dry on some walls.
So often when we’re busy we can just crack on, ‘no time for thinking, just crack on, haven’t got time to pause’. But pausing, especially over a cuppa, and thinking about where we’re at and how to respond to situations is almost always a good thing. It makes us consider the consequences of our actions.
Pausing allows us to plan. Some say that 10 minutes of planning can help save an hour a day of wasted time. So pause, and check the weather forecasts. Plan in other tasks. Make less hasty and more measured decisions, it's good for business.
Gratitude
Pausing and thinking how lucky we really are is a brilliant thing to do in business, and in life. I was given some pretty bland food at an event I went to recently. I could have been annoyed at it, and grumbled, being in a bad mood about it, colouring the rest of the event. Instead I thought how grateful I was to have that food, that the food was actually fine, and I could enjoy the rest of the event without feeling hungry. Thinking about what we have got, instead of what we haven’t is one of the secrets to a more contented life.
Better client relationships
Clients always appreciate decorators who listen to their needs and respond thoughtfully. Pausing and responding allows us to communicate more effectively, as we have time to consider what people have said, and what the best solutions might be. This builds trust and makes for better long-term relationships, leading to repeat business and a solid reputation.
That’s life
There’s a lot to be said for a Gallic shrug and an utterance of and sometimes hits the fan. But pausing, reframing, feeling grateful for what we have and responding to situations will always be a better approach than an emotional knee-jerk reaction.
Pausing can help us to be calmer, more considered, make better decisions, feel happier, and do a better job. Don’t be a knee-jerker, pause, and be a responder
A fresh facade for animal hospital
This heritage building in Wanstead east London, was in dire need of repair and restoration. The client selected DRM Decorating Services for the project, Daniel McCluskie gives us an overview of what was involved in the project...
The building is in the east of London and had been a beautiful brick residence with attractive exterior fascias and stonework. Unfortunately, time had taken its toll on the building, with failing stone and timber.
We allowed four weeks for the project, and organised full scaffolding to provide good access all around the exterior. The first task was to rake out and scrape all the loose and flaking paint from the wood.
All the masonry was skimmed with Toupret Stone Filler, then a stabilising solution and a full four coats of Dulux Trade Weathershield
We used a two-part wood filler and wood preservatives on the window frames and woodwork. Depending on the surface, there were two or three coats of primer and undercoat, and the final finish was two top coats of Dulux Trade Weathershield Gloss.
The client was delighted with our finish in restoring this old building to its former glory.

Crown Paints has provided a specification service for the design of Material Source Studio, the Glasgow-based hub for architects and designers, as part of its involvement as a partner at the studio.
Crown go straight to the Source
The latest Material Source Studio is only the second of its kind in the UK and is located in Glasgow’s West George Street. The studio offers a dedicated space in the heart of the Scottish city, designed specifically to support the region’s architecture, design, and property communities.
Material Source Studio Glasgow has 25 plus partners, all leading commercial interiors suppliers whose products are displayed. Visitors from the architecture, design and property communities can collect samples, create mood boards, and work from the studios’ Hub, as well as attend events in the 80-seat Theatre, with in-built kitchen and state of the art screen and sound system. The Workshop, with horseshoe seating, also creates a more relaxed presentation environment.
The expert colour studio team at Crown Trade worked with Material Source co-founder and creative director, Darren Clanford, to bring the comprehensive colour scheme to life through product specification
featuring Crown Trade Clean Extreme Clean Air and Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt products.
Vibrant colours including a striking brick red, bold green and deep navy were paired with a neutral stone shade to promote a warm and welcoming environment, whilst also upholding the vibrancy and social nature of the professional hub.
Crown’s flagship Clean Extreme Clean Air was chosen for its sustainable properties. The BREAAM and LEED compliant paint removes 45% of the formaldehyde present from the air, helping to ensure the building was fit for purpose from the very start of the project.
Meanwhile, the highly durable Clean Extreme Scrubbable Matt was used in high traffic areas, helping to extend the building’s maintenance cycle, and ensure the perfect finish stands the test of time.
Marie Hosie, Architectural & Design Consultant at Crown Paints, commented, “We’ve been delighted to supply our products to bring to life the latest Material Source Studio.
“The studios are vital spaces for architects and designers to come together, and contributing to these environments allows us to play our role in supporting this community, as well as the next generation of creative talent.”
Darren Clanford at Material Source said, “Our latest Studio has been crafted to support the entirety of Scotland’s built environment community, and Crown’s expertise has been invaluable in helping us bring our vision to life whilst delivering a long-lasting and reliable finish.
“The importance of designing around what we are given is becoming even more crucial in the world of architecture and design, and utilising existing fixtures in the original building was an integral part of the design process for this project. We exceeded our original target of
maintaining 50% of the building’s original fittings, and used quality products to bolster the interiors. This included selecting confident colour choices from Crown’s portfolio.”
The collaboration comes after the success of the Material Source Studio Manchester launch in 2021, which saw Crown’s products transform a vacant Grade II listed building into an inspirational hub for the region’s designers.

‘ Heavy-duty fixings (HD)
‘ Engineered steel core

When it comes to innovation, the number one company that stands out from the crowd is Axus Decor, which has spent many decades developing and improving products from trade feedback. After the success of their original Flex-e-Bowl, it was inevitable that a larger size would follow over time, and that time arrived.
As a multi-skilled tradesperson, I often mix up larger batches of filler and repair compounds, which could often be a tedious task using the 500ml Flex-e-Bowl because of its capacity. The new, large 1200ml Axus Flex-e-Bowl was ideal for me on a renovation project, where mixing up larger quantities of filler and other materials made a considerable difference, aided by the fact that my Cyklone mixing paddle easily works well inside.
It is manufactured using incredibly flexible Silicone, with quantity markers on the side wall to help with product gauging, for the perfect mix the first time and every time. This supersized flexible mixing bowl has a height of 80mm with a base of 160mm, plenty enough to get a filling knife inside to mix, tapering to a wider top of 180mm. Internal capacity is 1400ml to the brim with a practical using capacity of 1200ml.

I am very impressed with the bowl’s toughness, and it will
When asked a few years back to fit an expensive TV and an additional bespoke oak kitchen wall cabinet on a client’s dot and dab walls, I didn’t hesitate to specify Corefix fixings. They work in a different way to traditional wall plugs and screws, having an incredibly strong engineered steel tube core that transfers the load to the wall behind, in effect bridging the plasterboard
After marking out your drilling point, drill a 10mm hole through the plasterboard and into the brickwork behind, ensuring this is at right angles to the wall, tap the patented wall plug into the hole so it is fully inserted, then tap the unique steel core into the wall plug which is a really snug fit, your object is then screwed to the wall securely.
My top tip is to use an impact driver or cordless drill driver to get the screw virtually home, but always fully tighten the remaining few millimetres by hand with a screwdriver.
This incredible system enables a safe working load of 100kg when four fixings are used and has two screw length options, 100mm (red packaging) and 120mm (yellow). They both use 5mm diameter steel screws and a steel core.
Corefix are available in in boxes of 24 and 4, plus a TV fixing kit which contains 6 x 100mm fixings and a 10mm masonry drill bit.

Magic Gripper Door Clamp
www.pro-fitinnovations.co.uk
I was recently asked to renovate a property, which included replacing all door furniture, such as hinges, latches and door handles. I have to tell you that the property ranks as the worst for standard of decorating I’ve ever undertaken to rectify in over 45 years of trading!
I removed all doors and used the Pro-Fit Magic Gripper Door Clamp to hold the door rigid on the floor whilst I carried out various tasks such as scraping off 50 years of paint, machine sand the edges, cut in new hinges and locks.
Magic Gripper Clamps are an incredible innovation, they are available in single or twin packs, which is what I have. I also added the optional anti-slip pads, which prevent floors from getting scuffed and marked, they are like a heavy-duty foam buffer and fit snugly in the area that touches the floor.
As I worked on the doors, each was at various stages, so I added an additional level of protection with 1mm Red Rubber Glass Pads, these have a peel-able strong adhesive back that bonds to the Magic Gripper Clamps on the part that touches the door face (they are designed for clamping glass, hence the rubber).

Bedec is a paint manufacturer based in Essex, and they have been making groundbreaking water-based paints since the early 1980s. I trust their products as they offer exceptional surface protection, durability and colourfastness.
For a recent project, my client wanted a black, long-lasting finish for their new cart lodge and fencing, so I recommended Bedec Barn Paint.
Barn Paint is an easy-to-apply, microporous, acrylic, water-based paint that can be applied to new and previously painted substrates that are clean and free from contaminants. The list is long for everything you can apply it to, from wood and plastic to galvanised zinc! Coverage is 13-15m2 per litre, depending on surface and application method.
It is exceptionally resistant against rot, algae build-up, cracking, blistering and flaking. It comes in semi-gloss, satin, and matt finishes, and pack sizes are available in 2.5 litres, 5 litres, and 20 litres.
Available in black, white and a further 18 colours with a bespoke colour matching service available.

Having been a clothes brand ambassador for several well-known workwear companies, I have to like the clothes I wear, and I also know a good pair of trousers when I see them.
I remember helping make this continental style of painter’s black and white holster work trousers fashionable over ten years ago... They are now everywhere!
Features & Benefits
‘ Holster pockets (gusseted)
‘ One year guarantee
‘ Two zipped pockets
‘ Top feed knee pockets (non-reinforced knees)
‘ 19 pockets/compartments
Workwear choices for tradespeople are very individual... We all want something different, be it the price, the fit and style, and not forgetting the comfort and durability.
Stumbling across Site Kirksey white stretch holster trousers whilst in my local Screwfix store back in September 2023, I first noticed the excellent value for money, just £29.99. After checking them out, I was also very impressed with the YKK quality zip.
They are made from machine washable 64% polyester, 34% cotton and 3% elastane. Triple stitched to provide additional strength where you need it, the gusseted holster pockets are reinforced. With seven strong belt loops, perfect for keeping my trousers up!
Site Kirksey trousers have so many pockets and compartments with even a hammer loop – I think I’ve counted 19! The zipped pockets have reflective strips that ensure they can be seen in the dark and are useful for holding my keys and wallet. I also like the fact that this workwear range is made from responsibly sourced materials.
When I look back at the cleaning process of my brushes and rollers, it has always been something that cannot be skimped on. I have been using water-based trim paints for the last 10 years, so the brush and roller cleaning system has become much more manageable.
I’m now using the environmentally friendly Pretty Boy Paint Cleaner and Conditioner, and the results are exceptional, plus it’s so much quicker.
My brush and roller cleaning kit uses a limited edition red Washbox, roller squeegee, stainless steel wire brush, brush comb, and Pretty Boy Cleaner.
Features & Benefits
‘ Eco friendly and non-toxic
‘ For use with water-based products
‘ Recyclable packaging
I remove as much paint as possible from my brush or roller and return to the paint tin. I then add a small squeeze from the 250g bottle, working the Cleaner into the tool to ensure it gets deep inside the synthetic brush filaments or the roller fabric. A to-andfro motion in the WashBox ensures the best possible saturation, leaving for a short period to have a soak (do not leave brushes submerged, as this could damage the brush). I then use a brush comb and wire brush to help with any paint that’s caked on.
My brushes and rollers have an excellent soft bouncy feel afterwards.

To ensure its products are the best they can be – and for added reassurance of their quality - Dulux Trade enlists real professional painters and decorators to participate in its product testing process. The ‘Tested & Approved by Professional Decorators’ seal of approval means that following a product passing laboratory testing, it is has also been reviewed by professionals in three stages. This includes blind tests and field trials, to really put the paint through its paces. The updated Dulux Trade Vinyl Matt is the latest paint to have been ‘Tested & Approved’, we speak to some of the professional decorators behind the approval process to find out more about it...
Tested & Approved with Dulux Trade
Desmond Cass
Desmond Cass is the owner of D Cass & Son, a family decorating business in central London that has been established for 65 years. He has been a Dulux Select Decorator for 26 years and was the Grand Winner of the 2019 Dulux Select Decorators Awards.
Speaking on the ‘Tested & Approved’ process, Desmond said, “I’m always surprised by how much thorough testing takes place before the final product is materialised. As well as in the lab, products are tested by those who will go on to use them. This really elevates Dulux Trade above the rest, as it shows research and development is carried out consistently.
“As a professional painter and decorator, it’s great to be involved in the ‘Tested & Approved’ process. I use paint daily in this trade, and this means I can analyse the products quite easily as I know what other professionals will be looking for. This is why it’s so important that the trade is involved in the development process, as it’s a true test of the product.”
Phil Roberts
Phil Roberts has been a painter and decorator for over 40 years, running Phil Roberts Decorations in Essex. Phil has taken part in the ‘Tested & Approved’ process three times and said, “I always enjoy coming along to a testing day. They’re efficient and help me to stay up to date with new innovations in paint, whether that be a new formula or new criteria around sustainability, which in turn helps me to better my practice.
“At the end of the day, decorators are looking for a quality product. Everyone wants everything to last as long as possible. Decorators want to know that what they buy will work, and that there is a guarantee of that. The stamp of approval on a paint tin from professional decorators’ signals to others in the trade that it is a great product.”
The latest product to be ‘Tested & Approved’ by professional decorators is Dulux Trade Vinyl Matt. This paint offers high-opacity and exceptional coverage for a top-quality and uniform finish.
Dulux Trade Vinyl Matt is also 99.9% VOC-free and BREEAM and LEED compliant, helping to minimise impact on indoor air quality and the environment.
Miles Newby
Miles Newby owns Newby & Son, a family decorating business based in London, and he has been a decorator for over 30 years. Beyond his experience as a painter and decorator, he also starred as a designer and presenter on the BBC show, Real Rooms.
When asked about Dulux Trade’s testing process, he said, “The testing process was incredibly interesting to be a part of. One of the key things that stood out to me was the blind test. We applied paint on several surfaces and then provided feedback on the performance and finish, without knowing what products we had used. It was fascinating to see the differences between the paints, and I thought the process displayed Dulux Trade’s passion for delivering quality products.
“For decorators, the ‘Tested & Approved’ seal of approval is so important. Those in the trade use paint all day long and might look for factors that non-professionals may not catch onto. For example, professionals will look for efficiency to ensure they can complete projects in a timely manner. In addition, having been in the painting and decorating business for a long time, I have noticed there has been a shift in what professionals now look for – such as opting for water-based, low-VOC or VOC-free paints and it’s imperative that sustainable paint options still deliver good opacity, coverage and an excellent finish.
“The ‘Tested & Approved’ logo on a paint can lets you know that professionals have tested the product, and it will stand the test of time.”

Dulux Trade Stain Block Matt has recently been reformulated to offer improved opacity, whiteness and a matter finish. The upgraded 2-in-1 primer and topcoat will allow decorators to achieve even better results for their customers, now with same time-saving benefits and valued Dulux Trade quality. Effectively treat stains caused by water-based and solventbased inks, crayon, biro, coffee, grease, scuff marks, water and nicotine, as well as preventing stains from spreading. Stain Block Matt also helps to seal and bind friable, dry and powdery surfaces such as plaster, brick and distemper. Its sustainability credentials have also been enhanced, as it is now also 99.9% VOC (volatile organic compound) free. This change means that it has a reduced impact on indoor air quality and a lower carbon footprint when compared with the previous formulation, helping painters and decorators to meet customer demands for more sustainable solutions.
The ultimate bonding solution
Owatrol E-B (Emulsa-Bond) is a highly penetrating, stir-in paint additive for use in waterbased masonry or interior paints. It helps to alleviate peeling problems on all porous surfaces and is especially suitable for unstable, chalky and powdery surfaces, crumbling brickwork or render. Mixing E-B with the first coat ensures a strong, wear and peel-resistant bond, without the need to apply a separate primer. It is particularly useful for quick and effective painting of interior plaster, allowing the first coat of the final colour to also do the job of both primer and mist coat. Owatrol E-B can bond paint to a wide range of difficult surfaces including powdery, chalky, porous etc. and can be used on various types of substrates including plaster, masonry, wood and more. Set in the breathtaking Howardian Hills of Yorkshire, offering a glimpse of Britain’s glorious bygone days, is the magnificent estate of Castle Howard. PDA Associate Partner Repair Care has found itself playing a vital role in the tale of this theatrical home.
Preservation and Restoration
Castle Howard is an awe-inspiring piece of architecture, a Grade I listed building that holds historical treasures inside and out. From William Morris ’s designs to tranquil gardens and antique sculptures, the property opened to the public in 1952, and in recent years, the popular Netflix drama, Bridgerton.
Sustaining Heritage
The current custodians of the 320 year old property, Nick and Victoria Howard, along with their Estate team, are invested in the restoration and preservation of this dramatic building. With the rich history enshrined in Castle Howard, sensitivity to repair is of the utmost importance, coupled with a sustainable solution to solve the impact of aging and environmental stressors.
Stephanie Hall-Stead, Head of Built Environment at Castle Howard said, “Having previously worked in the National Trust for 10 years, I was fully aware of Repair Care and had a long-standing relationship with this company which is truly passionate about heritage.”
Stephanie and her team of eleven in-house services began the phased external repair and decoration of Castle Howard ’s magnificent windows in 2022, an undertaking that is predicted to continue until 2025. It has not been an easy endeavour, with many obstacles to overcome.
Sustaining Knowledge
With a trend of going against the grain embedded in the history of Castle Howard, Stephanie, and her team have followed suit, as she explains, “Initially, only our Repair Care trained joiners used Repair Care products. We soon realised the benefits of upskilling other members of our team too.”
Castle Howard has utilised the Trained Contractor Courses Repair Care offers, providing in-depth training to their maintenance team members, including painters and decorators. Investing in the community, Castle Howard has extended this training to external contractors, ensuring the highest standard of timber repairs. It has saved the maintenance team time and money, allowing them to focus on solving other problems they have encountered along the way.
Sustaining Care
Stephanie continues, “Repair Care has been invaluable, providing numerous onsite visits and advising us on the correct products to use, whether it’s Dry Flex ®4 for repairs and splicing, Dry Flex ®1 for when the pressure is on, or Dry Flex ®SF 2-in-1 for fine surface filling. They have guided us along the way, and it feels like nothing is too much for them.”
In this fast-paced world of profit and consumption, Repair Care shines like a beacon to the past. Their ethos of repairing and restoring over replacing enables the preservation of many historical buildings throughout Britain.
Stephanie concluded, “Repair Care is a unique company in that it doesn’t all end at the transaction of goods. They are approachable and provide genuine after-care. It is clear to me that their passion is not just for the use of their fantastic products but for the end product, seeing each project through to completion.”
In our second interview with Purdy, we speak to Andy Cummins, Senior Product Manager, about the part that comfort and ergonomics has to play in Purdy product design.
comfort on ...
How important are issues like comfort and ergonomics when it comes to product development?
All our products are designed to make a decorator’s job more productive, and a key part of that is ensuring that they are comfortable and effortless to use, so ergonomics is really important. From our oldest brushes to our newest storage box system, all our products have a feature that’s there purely for added comfort and usability.
How are Purdy products developed and tested to ensure optimum levels of comfort?
During the research and development stage, we test product prototypes first with a group of experts who provide their feedback, and then we test again with a wider field of end users. This extensive testing ensures that our products are put through their paces by a range of different customer types with varying ages and abilities. As such, any issues that may be uncovered during the trials can be tweaked accordinglyincluding those around discomfort and ease of use.
Are there any specific products where comfort and ergonomics were a key role in product development?
All our Purdy brushes have an Alderwood handle, which was a choice specifically based on comfort and usability. Alderwood is a lightweight yet durable hardwood that crucially absorbs moisture. Unlike with painted and varnished brush handles, this helps to prevent the brush from slipping out of the user’s hand, especially in the warmer months, which also helps to avoid blisters. Plus, each of our brush handles has been specifically designed to ensure ease of use for a specific application. For example, the Dale features a long, thin Rattail handle which is ideal for hard to reach areas, while ensuring the user can maintain complete control and accuracy.
What about your roller systems and tools?
Other products, like our roller frame, were designed to be lightweight and help prevent or alleviate fatigue. Our 9-inch Revolution roller frame was designed to be our lightest frame ever and also features an ergonomically designed grip that fits comfortably in the hand. Grip is something that is also key for many of our other products including the Purdy Pail which has multiple grip options including an innovative coffee cup style grip. With many of our prep tools the grip is also rubberised to prevent the tool from slipping from the user’s hand during continued use. Finally with our storage systems, ease of use and transportation is obviously key. Our Backpack has padded shoulder straps, an air mesh back panel and waist and chest straps to ensure even weight distribution and comfort for the wearer. Likewise, our brandnew Storage Box includes large 9” all terrain wheels so that it can be easily manoeuvred in and out of any job.
Why should contractors consider a product’s ergonomics before making a purchase?
If a product fits well in the hand or has additional features that aid the speed and ease of the painting process it will make a significant difference to comfort over a period of extended use and hopefully prevent or reduce fatigue. Professional painters and decorators are using their tools day in day out, and repetitive strain injury is a real possibility, so it’s crucial to consider not only how well a brush will lay down paint, or how a tool will get the job done, but how the product will feel in the hand after a day’s use. Will they want to pick it up again the next day? That’s the question a contractor needs to ask themselves.
New functions for Festool ExoActive
Festool are expanding the functionality of its active exoskeleton, the ExoActive EXO18, using the Work App
In 2023, Festool launched its battery-operated exoskeleton, the ExoActive, which makes light work of strenuous overhead tasks. It gives you an extra boost of strength before your arms get tired and at the same time takes the load off your neck. Users are impressed with this new helper, as the results of the test study show.
It is not for nothing that Festool recently received an iF design award for the ExoActive. The Festool Work App is delivering optimum functional extras for everyday work with the ExoActive
New additional functions with the Work App
“When it comes to removing wallpaper or painting ceilings and walls, there's nothing better than the ExoActive from Festool.”
With the free Festool Work App (Android and iOS), the ExoActive will, in future, be even more customisable to suit the specific application and requirements, all via the smartphone touchscreen for added convenience. For example, the app can be used to show step-by-step instructions detailing how to adjust the ExoActive to the user's body size.
“Working overhead with the ExoActive is out of this world. Sanding, painting, lifting, holding
– we give it 5 stars.” George Goode – @goode_decorating01
Adam Amari – @restoringstleonards
The app also makes it easier to set the appropriate working mode: The Fix mode provides support in a fixed position of around 100 degrees in front of the body. In Flex mode, the position can be selected with complete freedom. For asymmetrical work, the ExoActive offers support on one side for either the right or left arm. The app also displays the charge status, calls up operating data such as the level of support and provides software updates and even tutorials on how to use the ExoActive effectively.
Results from the customer testing study
“To find out exactly how our new exoskeleton will be used in practice, we conducted an international test study in seven European countries”, explains Dominic Ender, Product Manager at Festool
“This gave around 300 customers the opportunity to put the ExoActive through its paces on construction sites. And I have to say: The results speak for themselves, as they were very positive all round, especially when it came to overhead work.”
The final results indicated:
• 79% felt less physically exhausted
• 74% felt their workload had been eased
• 71% needed fewer breaks
• 72% were positive about the operation/adjustments during work
• 70% were positive about the adjustments to their body shape
“It's like having an assistant who is supporting me exactly where I need it most, without any effort from me. Not only does it increase my comfort, but it allows me to focus on the quality of my work.”

Ease of application What does it mean to you?
When it comes to what properties make a good quality paint so great, ease of application is one of the key requirements, but how is this achieved? Here, Barnaby Jones at Valspar Trade, delves into the detail...
Painting and decorating is a true skill, with years of hard work going into perfecting your craft. As a result, it’s important that you have a high-quality paint that stands up to your exacting standards and helps you to deliver a top-quality job, every time, first time. Given the competitive market and challenging economic climate, you need to be able to trust the products you use and know that they won’t let you down. When the paint is easy to apply, achieving the perfect finish becomes easier, allowing you to do your job with nothing holding you back. While many will have their own view of what constitutes ‘ease of application’, some of the key characteristics include reduced spatter, quicker clean up and an extended wet edge time.
All of these qualities are carefully considered when paint manufacturers develop new product formulations, with extensive research going into every tin. Practical testing is key, with our teams reviewing the open time of the paint, the viscosity and feel of application. We also consider the adaptability of the paint to different substrates and application preferences, whether that’s spraying or using a roller. Depending on the results, we will adjust the additives until we achieve the perfect formulation.
Let us take low spatter as an example. Whether painting walls, ceilings or woodwork, spatter is a nuisance all decorators will have encountered. It can make achieving those crisp and clean lines more difficult, contribute to a lengthier clean up (even with dust sheets) and make life increasingly awkward for the glasses-wearers amongst us.
That’s why we work hard to ensure that all Valspar Trade products have reduced or low spatter, making the paint easier to pour and easier to apply, regardless of your choice of applicator. The viscosity of the paint is a major contributing factor when it comes to spatter, with the correct ratio of thickening agents a delicate balance to achieve.
Another concern is ‘picture framing’, something that can be particularly tricky and time-consuming to remedy. Picture framing can often occur when cutting in, largely due to the difference in applicator, such as switching from brush to roller, or drying times, with the existing paint film difficult to manipulate and blend with the new wet coat.
For this to be avoided from the get-go, look for a paint range that has been formulated specifically to offer an extended wet edge time. A carefully adjusted balance between a number of ingredients, including choice of binder, thickening agents and various other additives to control and optimise drying speed, all contribute to added open time and wet edge. This can provide you with a longer window of opportunity to finish an entire surface, repair any irregularities and avoid lap marks, all helping to deliver that perfect finish.
At Valspar Trade, our focus is on making life easier for the user – you With a dedicated research and development team, we’re proud to offer a game-changing and expertly formulated range of high-quality trade essentials. Our Tough Matt and Vinyl Matt products have undergone rigorous ISO testing to ensure they stand up to the expectations of the trade, including coverage, spatter, scrubbability and extended open wet edge time, as well as being sprayable for additional ease.
