CHAMPIONS OF QUALITY IN OUR NEW series we have teamed up with Purdy to introduce the Painting and Decorating Association Members that have taken part in the Inspiring the Next Generation video series. We will also be exploring why each member thinks using quality tools is so important for professional decorators. THE INSPIRING THE Next Generation series looks to champion the professional decorator and encourage younger people to take up a role in the industry... And no one is more passionate about offering young people the training and apprenticeship opportunities they need to succeed, than professional painter and decorator Desmond Cass from D.Cass & Son. Desmond was first inspired to take up painting and decorating after going to work with a local tradesman, where he was tasked with preparing the space ready to be redecorated by stripping wallpaper, sanding down skirting boards and ensuring surfaces were clean. Although at first Desmond did not enjoy the work, when he saw the completed project and what his prep work had enabled the decorator to achieve, he was blown away. Seeing the transformation made him decide that he wanted to pursue a career in the industry. Desmond went on to complete an apprenticeship where he learnt the technicalities of the trade in college and applied these teachings and skills on site. Taking this

approach has made Desmond understand just how essential it is to support the next generation of decorators through apprenticeship schemes to ensure a continuous line of highly skilled and qualified professionals. As such, over 65 years, D.Cass & Son has trained 13 apprentices in total and each one has gone on to have a successful career. As well as training, Desmond also advocates the use of the correct, high-quality tools. He explained that in one room there will be numerous tasks and surfaces that all require a different product and application tool, so having the right tools at hand will help to improve efficiently and the overall finish. To complete work to a high standard, Desmond relies on Purdy. He likes that Purdy offers brushes tailored to
different types of paint, such as the Pro Extra Monarch that has long and thick bristles that are ideal for use with higher viscosity, oil-based paints. Alternatively, Desmond can use the Sprig for lower viscosity water-based paints thanks to its thin filaments that ensure the paint can be applied in a smooth motion with less drag for a flawless finish. In addition, Purdy makes it easier for Desmond to achieve certain finishes thanks to products like its Cub brush. Ideal for intricate jobs, it has an angular style tip that makes cutting in and getting into tight corners a breeze. Its design also means that Desmond can get closer to the substrate and have greater control thanks to the lightweight handle. What’s more, the unique blend of Dupont solid, round and tapered filaments ensures a high-quality finish every time.
