The Honourable Mr Justice Graeme Mew

B.A. (Hons.), LL.B., FCIArb

Since 2013 Graeme Mew has been a judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the senior trial court in Canada’s most populous province.

Prior to that, he practised as an advocate, arbitrator and mediator in Toronto with Clyde & Co and in London as a member of Chambers at Four New Square, Lincoln’s Inn. He holds law degrees from Kingston University in the UK and from the University of Windsor in Canada. He was a member of the Bars of England & Wales (Middle Temple, 1982), Ontario (1987) and British Columbia (2010). He was for many years an honorary legal adviser to Rugby Canada and to the British Consul-General in Toronto.

Graeme attended Caterham School as a boarder from 1968–1977 and served as President of the Old Caterhamians’ Association from 2013-2015. In 2019 he was elected President of the Caterham School Foundation. Graeme and his brother David (1972–77) are third generation Caterhamians; Graeme’s daughter, Olivia (2003–5) also attended the School. She is now a successful entrepreneur living and working in Montréal. Graeme’s son, Calum, lives in London, where he works in marketing and communications. Graeme’s main residence since 1985 has been in Ontario, Canada. He currently lives in Kingston, Ontario, with his Scottish-born wife, Dr. Ruth MacSween, a dermatologist.

Until his appointment as a judge, Graeme served on the panels of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the Sport Dispute Resolution

Centre of Canada (SDRCC) and Sport Resolutions (UK). He has been a judicial and appeals officer for World Rugby since 2001 and a member of World Rugby’s Anti-Doping Advisory Committee since its establishment in 2000. He was a member the ad hoc panels of the CAS at the Commonwealth Games in 2010 (New Delhi) and the Olympic Games in 2012 (London) and has been an Appeal Officer at four Rugby World Cups.

He is the author of The Law of Limitations, published by LexisNexis Canada, now in its fourth edition (2023), and of numerous articles and chapters on sports law, dispute resolution, conflict of laws, insurance and professional governance. He is currently a sessional instructor at the Faculty of Law, Queen’s University in Kingston, and is a frequent speaker at conferences and meetings of justice professionals.

Graeme has been active in a number of other organisations and is a past President of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association (2005–7) and the Toronto Nomads Rugby Club (2001). He is presently a Regional Vice-President of the Commonwealth Magistrates’ and Judges’ Association, and is a Bencher of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple.

EXTERNAL ACADEMIC AWARDS

Caterham pupils have achieved impressive success in external academic competitions during 2024/25. Application rates for showcasing excellence in this way remains high – a sign that pupils are embracing the challenge of truly ambitious study.

CHESS

George T (Third Year) played in an adult tournament for the England team in Lucerne and will compete in the Czech Republic over Easter.

HUMANITIES

St Andrew’s Ethics Cup: National Winners Caterham’s Fourth Year and Lower Sixth team won the regional heat in January. They travelled to St Andrews in June where they competed against the other regional winners and were crowned national champions. The team members involved were:

– Fourth Year: Florence R, Meera V, Abigail G, Sophia P-W, Lia N, Namratha D

– Lower Sixth: Millie B, George M, Vivienne C, Harry M

The Trinity Schools Book Award

Winning entries by Aimee L, Emily D, Amritaa, and Kanza progressed to the external competition in March at Emanuel School.

Popper Prize (Inter-School Essay Competition)

Meera V and Tara S (Fourth Year) have shortlisted for their essays on the topic of AI and Ethics.

Peter Cane Legal Reasoning Prize 2025 Vivienne Christofides received a commendation for her entry.

Girton College Cambridge Humanities Essay Prize 2025

Narayan M achieved third place with his entry, ‘Dual Tanagramania’ receiving an invitation to a prize giving ceremony in Cambridge.

Northeastern University Essay Commendation Lara C achieved highly commended.

John Locke Essay competition

Mary M, Gabby T were both shortlisted

John Lock Institute Summer School

Luke Keogh won a place at the prestigious summer school after several rounds of interview.

LANGUAGES

Harry E (Fifth Year) won second place in the Chinese Bridge Competition. This is an annual, international contest for non-Chinese students to showcase their Mandarin language skills and knowledge of Chinese culture. It’s organised by the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), and in the UK, in collaboration with the British Council.

Alexis C has won a commendation in the Queens College Oxford, Anthea Bell Young Translators competition translating a French literary text into English.

MATHEMATICS

UKMT Senior Maths Challenge and Follow-on Rounds

In November 2024, 93 Lower and Upper Sixth students participated in the Senior Maths Challenge, with outstanding results:

– 32 Gold Certificates

– 35 Silver Certificates

– 16 Bronze Certificates

Special recognition goes Darren Z in the Upper Sixth for Best in Year, and to Aidan T and Anastasiia M in the Lower Sixth for Best in School. These students qualified for the British Maths Olympiad (BMO) Round 1.

– Rodney L, Lucas L and Anastasia M achieved Merits in the BMO1, Anastasia M receiving Best in Year.

– Matteaus S, Aidan T and Darren Z earned Distinctions.

– Darren Z was awarded Best in School, a Bronze Medal, a book prize, and qualified for the BMO2.

Several Gold Certificate winners also qualified for the Kangaroo, with Aidan S and Adrian H in the Upper Sixth receiving Best in School.

UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge and Follow-on Rounds

In January, 135 Third, Fourth, and Fifth Year students participated in the Intermediate Maths Challenge:

– 45 Gold Certificates

– 52 Silver Certificates

– 23 Bronze Certificates

Rupert M and Jake D from the Third Year qualified for the Cayley Olympiad, with Ruper M taking Best in Year.

– Rupert M achieved a Distinction, a Bronze Medal, and a book prize, placing in the top 100 mathematicians in the country.

In the Fourth Year, Jiayi L achieved Best in Year and was joined by Jaden T, Mumu Z and Florence N in the Hamilton Olympiad.

– Jiayi L and Florence N earned Distinctions, with Jiayi L also securing a Bronze Medal and a placing in the top 100 mathematicians in the country.

Ian from the Fifth Year received Best in School and qualified for the Maclaurin Olympiad, achieving a Merit.

– Congratulations also to the 12 Third Year students who qualified for the Grey Kangaroo, and the 21 from the Fourth and Fifth Years who qualified for the Pink Kangaroo.

Special mention goes to Tiantian, Hanyi and Nigel for their exceptional performances in these follow-on rounds.

Hans Woyda Maths Competition

In the Hans Woyda competition, our team of Darren Z in the Upper Sixth, Anastasia M, Rodney L and Lucas L in the Lower Sixth, Tiffany C in the Fifth Year and Jake D in the Third Year, faced off against Whitgift, Wallington County Grammar School, and Wallington High School for Girls. After some impressive showings, they were ultimately knocked out by St Olaves Grammar School in the later rounds.

UKMT Team Maths Challenge

At the UKMT Team Maths Challenge at Wilson’s School, our team (Rupert M, Jake D, Adrith N and Willima J) performed admirably, completing the group and cross number rounds without dropping a mark. Although a few crucial marks were lost in the relay and shuttle rounds, they finished in a strong fifth place.

Junior Maths Challenge

In the Junior Maths Challenge, 97 First and Second Year students took part, earning:

– 26 Gold Certificates

– 31 Silver Certificates

– 27 Bronze Certificates

Charlie B and Amritaa D were recognized for their outstanding achievements, achieving Best in School in the Second Year in addition to Alexander J who was recognised with Best in Year in the First Year.

19 students qualified for the Junior Mathematical Kangaroo, with some students also selected for the Olympiad in June.

American Maths Challenge

Several Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth students took part in the American Maths Challenge, with Lucas L from the Lower Sixth earning an outstanding score of 103.5, qualifying for the second round.

PERFORMING AND CREATIVE ARTS AND DESIGN

Sovereign Art Foundation: International Winners

Zosh H (Lower Sixth) won the judges’ vote for their large mixed-media painting, Nightmare of Mismatched Antipathy.

Eugenie C won the public vote for her oil painting, A Bride to Be

Both artists opted to auction their work, raising €1,400 (Zosh) and £1,200 (Eugenie) for Latimer Community Art Therapy.

Royal Court’s Young Playwright Award –National Winner

George M in Lower Sixth, won the Royal Court’s Young Playwright Award for her play ‘Fox Hunt’.

Cambridge University Architecture Competition

Estee N (Lower Sixth) was awarded Highly Commended.

Arkwright Scholarship

Oliver N (Fifth Year) has been confirmed as a recipient of this prestigious award.

Global Art Competition (Farshore & ootiBoo!) Chloe K (Second Year) won the competition by designing a monster to mark the publication of ‘Terror Tower’ in the Dread Wood series, judged by author Jennifer Killick.

ARTiculation Competition

George M (L6th) secured second place in the regional semi-final.

Starpack Packaging Awards 2025

Elise B (Upper Sixth) received the runner-up prize in December 2024.

Minnesota Festival of Owls

UK Chemistry Race (Cambridge University):

The Sixth Form Chemists (Radiumhead) participated, securing an overall placement of 24th out of 60, topping both the median and mean scores.

Royal Society of Chemistry Competition:

A team of four pupils from Third to Fifth Year competed in the nationwide competition. They scored highly in both practical and written elements, winning their heats against nine other schools. They are awaiting results to determine if they progress to the national competition.

Bebras Computing Challenge:

Six Third Year pupils – Jake, Harry, Rupert, Joseph, George, and another Harry – achieved perfect scores of 220/220.

Nearly half of the Third Year Computer Scientists were awarded Gold certificates placing them in the top 10 per cent nationally.

Out of everything, it has to be my performance with my friends playing as a band and performing in the boarder’s showcase, great success and I’m so proud to present it in front of our boarding community
