DEEP FAKES & DIGITAL TRUST – THE IMPORTANCE OF SECURING VIDEO The rise of generative AI is expected to revolutionise the ways we use our security systems along with the information that these systems will be able to provide. These promises of new levels of efficiency, accuracy and creativity using artificial intelligence also come with great risks, thanks to the growing prevalence of tools to manipulate or create “deepfake” videos.

While some instances of deepfakes or manipulated video are easier to spot, other alterations to video can be seamless to the viewer because they don’t involve obvious changes in the video footage.

For example, altering the timestamp of a video clip to a different day or time can provide incorrect information about when the event occurred. Taking out specific frames of a video clip from an event can remove the event or person of interest in the video, causing the clip to inaccurately portray an event.

Challenges trust in video evidence This ability to alter video can ultimately pose significant challenges to organisational trust in video evidence and the in-

dustry’s ability to maintain the authenticity of surveillance footage. This can have severe consequences in many areas, including criminal investigations, court proceedings, and internal corporate security investigations. As these threats continue to grow, traditional forensic techniques to safeguard video footage will not be

enough to protect against generative AI’s ability to covertly and overtly alter surveillance video. This growing need for new solutions highlights the importance for industry collaboration and a standardized way to preserve the integrity of video and institutional trust in the footage as an accurate view of a situation. n

SIGNING MOU TO LAUNCH OPERATIONAL TRIALS OF 50 AUTONOMOUS TAXIS IN 2025 Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Baidu’s autonomous ridehailing service Apollo Go, a global leader in autonomous transport solutions, to roll out autonomous taxis on a large scale across

the emirate. The company will begin the experimental operation of 50 autonomous vehicles in the coming months, paving the way for the official public launch of the service in 2026.

Under the terms of the MoU, Baidu’s Apollo Go will deploy the sixth also the latest generation of its autonomous taxis RT6, specifically designed for autonomous mobility services. These vehicles are equipped with 40 sensors and detectors to ensure the highest standards of automation and safety. This model has already achieved remarkable success and garnered widespread acclaim from users in China. The data collection and testing phase will commence with 50 vehicles in the coming months, gradually expanding to 1,000 autonomous taxis over the next three years, according to the established efficiency and service quality standards. This launch marks Apollo Go’s first international expansion in the testing and operation of autonomous vehicles outside China mainland and Hong Kong.

To date, the company has logged over 150 million kilometres of safe driving, enabling large-scale self-driving taxi services across multiple cities in Chin50a, in addition to the roll out of 100% driverless operations. It has also completed more than 10 million autonomous trips, making it the world’s largest operator of autonomous vehicle fleets. n

“AI is whatever hasn’t been done yet.”

This wry observation from Princeton professors Arvind Narayanan and Sayash Kapoor in their book AI Snake Oil: What Artificial Intelligence Can Do, What It Can’t, and How to Tell the Difference perfectly captures how the definition of AI keeps shifting, allowing the term to mean almost anything to anyone. Once the technology works reliably, however, be it spell-check, speech recognition, or autopilot in planes,

we strip away its AI designation and take its magic for granted.

AI Shrinks the Haystack, But Humans Still Find the Needle Yet, as AI security solutions flood the market with promises of almost supernatural vigilance, a sobering reality check comes from a tragic event at Antioch High School in Nashville. In January 2025, despite a nearly $1 million investment in an AI-based gun detection system called Omnilert, a 17-year-old student, Solomon Henderson,

managed to bring a concealed handgun onto campus. He fatally shot a classmate and wounded another student before taking his own life.

The AI system, designed to identify visible firearms through surveillance cameras, failed to detect Henderson’s weapon. According to district officials, the system did not activate because the gun was not visible to the cameras at the time of the shooting. Omnilert’s CEO eventually admitted that the system requires a clear line of sight to the weapon to function effectively.

Analysis Team, warns that such overstatements inflate expectations beyond AI’s current capabilities, noting, “AI is often portrayed as an all-knowing, autonomous system that is capable of making decisions instead of us. This is, of course, not realistic.”

In agreement with Yamout, Mohammed Soliman — a member at McLarty Associates and senior fellow at the Middle East Institute — argues that marketing often exaggerates the promises of what AI in security can do, adding that it does not work “as well as the glossy ads claim. They pitch fully autonomous security or zero breaches, but that’s overselling it.”

This incident underscores the limitations of relying solely on AI for critical security measures. The technology’s inability to detect concealed weapons raises concerns about its effectiveness in real-world scenarios where threats are not always overt.

Sajjad Arshad, Business Development Director at AxxonSoft Middle East, puts it bluntly: “AI doesn’t drink coffee to stay more focused, but it also doesn’t understand intent”. While AI excels at scanning images, spotting patterns, and combing through massive volumes of video without fatigue, it falls short where it matters most — in understanding why something is happening.

“Security isn’t just about spotting anomalies,” Arshad emphasizes. “It’s about judgment.” AI can flag someone standing still in a parking lot, but it can’t tell if they’re lost or about to break in. That level of interpretation — the kind that connects behavior to motive — still belongs to humans. As Arshad puts it, “decision-making and context are still human territory,” even if AI is doing the heavy lifting behind the scenes.

AI in the Middle East: Between Vision and Reality As the global conversation on artificial intelligence intensifies, the Middle East, Turkey, and Africa (META) region is emerging as one of the most ambitious adopters of AI in security. According to recent industry data, 46% of end users in this region plan to integrate AI and machine learning by 2025—the highest rate worldwide. Furthermore, 37% of security decision-makers reported increased budgets for 2024, significantly above the global average. This surge in funding reflects not just a hunger for innovation but a belief in AI as a pillar of modernization and resilience. 80% of end users in the region have also been affected by data privacy regulations, driving a strong push for secure data storage and cybersecurity education.

“AI/ML is an integral part of smart automation at scale,” says Maher Yamout, Lead Security Researcher at Kaspersky’s Global Research & Analysis Team (GReAT). “In Middle Eastern countries, we see it in smart services, law enforcement, cybersecurity, and smart city infrastructure. The need is strategic, but the global race for relevance amplifies it.”

This dual motivation—strategic need and global competitiveness—was echoed across expert interviews. According to Yamout, “Since AI/ML is an integral part of smart automation, there’s a genuine need for it globally, including in the Middle East. But especially in countries aiming to be competitive on the global scene.”

Mohammed Soliman, Senior Fellow at the Middle East Institute, agrees on the rising demand in the region: “The strategic need is real in the UAE’s smart cities, like Dubai’s AI traffic systems, and Gulf states guarding oil assets show that cyber threats, like Iran-linked hacks, push it too.”

Government initiatives like Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and the UAE’s National AI Strategy 2031 are more than symbolic. Saudi Arabia’s National Strategy for Data and AI (NSDAI) aims to generate $135 billion in AI-driven GDP impact by 2030, according to PwC Middle East, reflecting a commitment to economic diversification and technological leadership. Across the region, AI is expected to contribute over $320 billion to the economy by 2030, underscoring the scale of investment and ambition.

Hans Kahler from Eagle Eye Networks highlights the Middle East’s rapid adoption of AI surveillance, driven by digitization and demand for scalable solutions, stating, “Eagle Eye Networks has seen firsthand how demand for AI-powered security is accelerating in the Middle East. Our recent investment in a new data center in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a direct response to the digitization push,” says Hans Kahler, COO of Eagle Eye Networks.

However, the region is not immune to the global wave of AI hype. Yamout draws a comparison to past overhyped technologies: “It’s somewhat a déjà vu with the AI hype and previous tech such as blockchain, where everyone wanted to insert blockchain in a task it’s not meant to. We must ensure proper education and awareness on the AI/ML capabilities, realistic expectations, and limitations.”

In terms of addressing regional disparities, Trkulja advocates for strategies that bridge urban-rural and sectoral gaps. “To avoid a digital divide, strategies must address underserved areas and industries.” She suggests applying AI in agriculture to enhance food security in rural North Africa, optimizing crop yields and improving resource management; leveraging AI-powered language tools to support Arabic content and services, expanding access to digital resources; and supporting AI start-ups through inclusive funding and incubators to foster innovation.

Finally, she calls for greater regional cooperation. GCC countries should coordinate AI research centers, cross-border projects, and joint regulatory frameworks. By working together, these nations can harness the full potential of AI to drive innovation and economic growth across the region.

Soliman pushes for similar pragmatism: “They’ve got to get practical. Use local data—sandstorm-blurred cameras, Arabic phishing scams—not Western hand-me-downs. Train people, not just buy tech. Few Arab STEM grads do AI—that’s a gap.

And set rules early—privacy and accountability laws will dodge Europe’s mess. Less flash, more follow-through.”

Yamout reinforces this. “By educating ourselves on the different use cases and potential implementations,” he notes, “we can gradually use the tech to our advantage, and at the right place.”

As budgets rise and pilot projects multiply, the META region stands at a crossroads. AI is no longer a future promise—it is a present imperative. But as with all tools of power, how it is wielded will matter more than how much is spent.

Key Pain Points in AI-Driven Security Systems While AI has undeniably revolutionized physical security, offering significant advancements in areas like surveillance, access control, and threat detection, many of the promises surrounding these technologies are often overstated, and current limitations must be carefully considered.

One of the most overhyped aspects of AI in physical security is the idea that it can completely replace human security personnel. “No way. AI’s a data-crunching beast, but it’s got no judgment. A cyber tool might flag a login from China, but a human knows the CEO’s traveling”, says Soliman.

While AI can automate routine tasks and assist in decision-making, it cannot fully replicate human judgment. Complex scenarios that require contextual understanding and nuanced decision-making still necessitate human oversight. AlRefai from OPSWAT highlights a key limitation, noting that AI’s lack of transparency undermines trust in its decision-making, stating, “AI systems can make accurate predictions, but they often operate as ‘black boxes,’ making it hard for teams to understand or validate their decisions.”

The same concerns about the “black box” problem are shared by Yamout, who describes it as instances in which AI makes decisions that are hard to explain. “AI recommendations or conclusions need to be explainable, especially in critical sectors”, he stresses.

Full autonomy is still a myth for most use cases are trained on. This means that biases and gaps in data can lead to inaccurate outcomes. Furthermore, AI is vulnerable to adversarial attacks, where malicious inputs can deceive the system, undermining its effectiveness.

Many are unaware of this because of a common misconception that AI systems are inherently secure. In reality, AI technologies are susceptible to the same cybersecurity risks as other digital systems, including data poisoning and unauthorized access. Securing AI systems requires robust cybersecurity measures to protect both the technology and the data it processes.

False positives also pose the risk of desensitizing security personnel. Soliman points out that persistent accuracy issues in AI systems can overwhelm security teams, stating, “False positives are a pain; there are still considerable error rates in some cyber tools.” An overwhelmed team may begin to ignore or delay responses, increasing the chance of missing genuine threats. Excessive alerts can lead to slower reaction times and, in some cases, critical incidents going unnoticed.

Another pain point is the fact that the effectiveness of AI in physical security is closely tied to the quality of data it receives. Many security systems rely on large volumes of labeled data, and if this data is inaccurate or insufficient, it can significantly impact AI performance.

Integrating AI technologies with legacy security systems presents another challenge. Many organizations struggle to make new AI solutions compatible with existing infrastructures, which can lead to

inefficiencies or costly overhauls. Without proper configuration and data management, new technologies may introduce blind spots. Kahler confirms the poor state of the existing infrastructure. “Many systems are still closed or outdated, which limits what AI can do. That’s why open platforms matter—they allow for integration and continuous evolution as AI capabilities grow”.

Furthermore, Kapiniaris says that some of the misunderstandings stem from a lack of familiarity with the real capabilities of current-generation hardware. “For instance, accuracy is often influenced more by hardware limitations than by AI itself.

It’s important for the market to recognize that poor performance is frequently due to low-quality equipment or improper CCTV installation—not a flaw in the AI”, he says.

AI also requires ongoing maintenance and skilled personnel to manage and update the systems. Without proper oversight, AI systems can become inefficient or even counterproductive. Environmental factors, such as poor lighting or extreme weather conditions, can further limit AI’s ability to accurately detect and analyze threats.

AlRefai points out that deploying AI in security comes with a host of challenges beyond just technology. “Organizations face many struggles,” he explains, “including technical challenges like ensuring model accuracy, minimizing bias, and maintaining data privacy, as well as compliance with regulatory frameworks.” The lack of experienced professionals adds to the burden, with many security teams still unprepared to manage AI tools effectively. “Ensuring ethical use

Kahler of Eagle Eye Networks reinforces this view, emphasizing AI’s role as a supportive tool that enhances, rather than supplants, human judgment, stating, “AI will not—and should not—replace humans. It’s a powerful assistant, not a decision-maker.”

In agreement, Kapiniaris of Monitoreal argues that AI’s true value lies in augmenting human capabilities, adding, “It might sound overly optimistic, but I’m confident that the current level of AI already delivers remarkably reliable performance.

The challenge isn’t a gap in capability, but rather the time required for both the technology and human side to develop the necessary culture, infrastructure, and habits.

Only then can they truly integrate and operate in seamless harmony.”

In the end, AI’s place in security won’t be decided by algorithms alone, but by the values and judgment we bring to its use. The Rise of LED and Pixel Density “The operator workstation is a miniature video wall in its own right, given the number of pixels it’s got on there,” says Matthew Tibbitt, Senior Product Manager at Datapath. This transformation at the operator level mirrors broader shifts across control rooms and command centers, where the march toward LED walls has also accelerated. Once reserved for trade show attractions, LED modules now dominate front-of-room installations, offering greater brightness, uniformity, and pixel density than their LCD predecessors.

As Tibbitt noted, “LED giants are becoming more and more impressive with more and more pixels,” prompting system designers to select pixel pitches tailored to viewing distance and content type, whether IPTV feeds or SCADA outputs. This shift allows for smaller overall wall dimensions without sacrificing clarity—a boon in space-constrained environments.

Rising Data Demands In modern control rooms, the surge in high-resolution video has placed unprecedented strain on AV infrastructures.

Operators now monitor dozens of UHD streams simultaneously—whether it’s CCTV, IPTV, body-worn camera feeds, or web-based dashboards—and expect every frame to render in crystal clear detail. This “more data, more pixels” reality mandates network architectures and video wall controllers capable of moving terabits of data per second without compromising on latency or image quality.

The volume of data is growing rapidly, driven by the rise of high-resolution video sources, and only advanced solutions are capable of meeting the increasing demand for full-fidelity 4K content.

Workstations as Miniature Video Walls Perhaps more surprising than the proliferation of LEDs is the explosion of desktop resolution. Control room operators have traded single-screen setups for

multiple 4K monitors, effectively creating “personal” video walls at each workstation. The increasing number of pixels at the operator’s workstation is leading to fewer pixels being displayed. This trend not only improves situational awareness at the individual level but also reduces the need for sprawling wall installations.

Bad design can also be literally dangerous in critical environments. “We’re that central hub of the visualization data. If it’s difficult, if it’s an encumbrance, if it’s cumbersome to deal with, or stuff is not where you expect it to be, not where it was last time, that’s going to make you a much less effective operator”, says Tibbitt.

Centralized Management At the core of modern video wall deployments lies the convergence of AV and IP networking. Integrated platforms decouple source capture from display endpoints, enabling any input—whether a live camera, server feed, or lecturer’s laptop—to be routed securely across the facility. As Tibbit puts it, their system embodies an “anything, anywhere mantra,” delivering each stream with minimal latency and enterprise-grade encryption.

This consolidation replaces the labyrinth of under-desk PCs and individual video controllers of yesteryear, offering administrators a single interface to configure walls, workstations, and side rooms alike.

The Shift to IP Networks To meet these demands, control rooms are abandoning closed matrix video infrastructures in favor of AV over IP. Standardized IP networks offer the flexibility to route any source, ranging from a lecturer’s laptop to a remote security camera, to any endpoint, whether a desktop monitor, main video wall, or external briefing room display. This “anything, anywhere” paradigm not only streamlines cabling and installation but also enables virtually limitless scalability: there are no hard caps on the number of inputs or outputs. However, IP networks introduce new challenges—most notably security and latency—that must be addressed to safeguard critical operations.

Ensuring Security and Low Latency In environments where data integrity and access control are paramount, encryp-

tion is non-negotiable. Modern AV over IP solutions employ AES encryption with rolling keys, ensuring that video, audio and control signals remain protected end-toend. Complementing this is integrated KVM functionality: operators can switch sources within a frame or two, thus eliminating delays and reducing cognitive load during high-stress scenarios. Consistent user interfaces across endpoints further minimize training requirements and the risk of operator error.

Next, today’s control rooms handle extremely sensitive data: live surveillance footage, incident reports, and missioncritical dashboards. Transmitting this data over IP exposes it to potential cyber threats unless robust encryption measures are in place. Advanced solutions employ AES encryption with rolling keys, ensuring that even if an attacker intercepts the stream, the content remains indecipherable. On the latency front, the commoditization of 10 GbE networking and the adoption of visually lossless compression techniques allow uncompressed or near-lossless video to traverse the network with sub-millisecond delays, crucial in command-and-control scenarios where every millisecond can influence life and death decisions.

Intelligent Automation and Event-Driven Workflows Arguably the most transformative development in video wall technology is the integration of event-driven automation.

Contemporary systems listen for a variety

of triggers—SNMP traps, MQTT messages, API calls or even the loss of a video feed—and respond instantaneously. For example, upon detecting a camera failure the platform can seamlessly switch to a backup source; during a city-wide emergency, it can dim room lights, flash warning indicators in adjacent corridors and display incident footage on briefing room screens—all orchestrated without manual intervention. This level of joinedup thinking not only accelerates response times but also frees operators to focus on critical decision-making.

Proprietary Solutions in Focus: Aetria The webinar devoted much of its time to a proprietary platform called Aetria, described as Dathapath’s “complete solution for the design, management, and operation of control rooms”. Aetria exemplifies the convergence of hardware and software in today’s market: it unifies capture cards, AV over IP distribution, and visualization under a single pane of glass, providing administrators with centralized control over sources, layouts, and templates. Its event engine extends beyond simple scheduling, enabling integrators to script complex scenarios, such as emergency lighting and access control triggers, through standard interfaces like web sockets or SNMP. As Tibbitt explains, Aetria enables operators to route any source to any endpoint in as fast a manner as possible with the lowest latency, while enforcing enterprise-

While its vendor-centric nature may dismay some, Aetria underscores the growing demand for turnkey systems that address pixel management, security, automation, and operator ergonomics in one package.

The Evolving Role of AV Technology Beyond traditional sectors like emergency services and utilities, IP-enabled control rooms now span industries as diverse as cybersecurity, smart city management, and higher education. Centralizing network security monitoring has become indispensable as enterprises grapple with dispersed workforces and expanding attack surfaces. In parallel, municipal agencies leverage control rooms to manage traffic, environmental sensors, and energy grids, requiring seamless integration of video wall displays with IoT devices, building management systems, and unified communications platforms.

AV appliances have transformed from isolated display controllers into IT-integrated appliances designed for data visualization.

Solutions like VuWall’s Application Server can stream and share dashboards, web apps, and video content across the network, eliminating the need for separate PCs per application. Choi: The Middle East is one of IDIS’s strategic markets, both in terms of value and in appetite for innovative video solutions. We see customers in the region demanding advanced surveillance technology and being willing to invest in it. It’s also a compliance-driven region that is a good fit for Korean-made high-quality and reliable products in terms of camera performance standards and extended retention periods in some cases up to a year.

Ambitious diversification programs and megaprojects in the region, and continuing investments in new greenfield projects - plus the upgrade of existing infrastructure to increase operational efficiency - are also driving demand for video surveillance.

GCC countries are rapidly expanding existing sectors and investing in new markets to ensure sustainable economic growth and jobs for local citizens. Continuing urbanization and social development in countries like the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, is resulting in yet more infrastructure projects. IDIS is confident of continued growth in 2025, with projects being boosted by regional development investment. These range from mega- and giga-projects to smaller-scale applications which include important local innovations and infrastructure upgrades.

For vendors and technology partners, this provides fertile ground because the cutting-edge solutions that we develop and deploy on behalf of Middle East customers can also help drive innovations in our global offering, and the influence goes both ways. For example, IDIS technology originally used by US police forces and American military vehicles translated into robust modular surveillance solutions for ATMs in the desert, and expositionproof cameras in remote and hazardous environments like upstream and oil and gas and for at-risk tankers carrying highly valuable crude in the midstream sector.

In all our key markets our expansion strategy is built around a clear proposition that customers understand. We offer high-performance, end-to-end, video solutions with some of the industry’s best value lifetime costs – i.e. low total cost of ownership (TCO). We target that clear and transparent offering to those sectors where we see the highest potential

in terms of both the sector size and the level of investments going in.

In the Middle East, we see many of the right conditions, with a wide variety of end-user sectors – commercial and government - and significant investment potential. Key verticals here include banking; logistics & warehousing; retail; education; hospitality; and critical infrastructure.

For example, IDIS has continued building on our track record of delivering largescale, end-to-end, AI-powered surveillance. Major contracts include government projects in Qatar, Kuwait, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia (including Neom-related installations), and significant commercial projects in the UAE. 2024 was a year of significant growth for us, with just over 20% CAGR building on the continuous expansion we’ve seen since our brand debut at Intersec in 2014. Again, we see two-way benefits with regions beyond the Middle East, including neighboring countries. For example, three years ago we expanded our sales and tech support capability to encompass Türkiye (in 2021), and over the last year that has helped to drive further growth in the MEA region.

Türkiye has many synergies, including socio-political alignments and geographical proximity, so the expansion has continued to support the growing IDIS presence and sales in the MEA region.

Looking further afield, IDIS’s acquisition of Costar in 2023 which led to a significant expansion of the IDIS Americas operation, has broadened our solutions offering for customers in the Middle East.

To give just one example, this year for the first time at Intersec we showcased our I-Mobile Solution for mass transit applications, including light rail and busses.

Encompassing cameras, robust, U.S. military-grade 4K recorders, accessories, and IDIS Solution Suite VMS, I-Mobile enables live monitoring and recording of vehicle interiors and exteriors, and combines robust video capture with GPS tracking and vehicle information systems data including location and speed. As well as improving safety for drivers and passengers, the solution delivers valuable insights for optimizing service levels, efficiency, and fleet management. It’s important to note that as a pioneer in vehicle surveillance systems, IDIS has been leading the way with ODM products and technologies in the United States transit applications since 2005. While our name might not be familiar to every transit operator in the Middle East, the technologies that dominate the market today are largely born

from IDIS. We are the original architects behind the advancements that fueled leading security brands, giving us deep-rooted expertise and a substantial track record in the vehicle surveillance industry. a&s Middle East: How does IDIS tailor its products and services to meet the specific security needs and regulatory requirements of clients in the Middle East?

Choi: IDIS has developed a strong lineup of industrial-grade products tailored to the unique demands of the Middle East market, including explosion-proof and mobile solutions. Our strong presence in the region and our close collaboration with customers has helped us to understand and address the particular challenges here. We have a track record of customizing solutions for specific projects, including the most demanding sites where harsh conditions can occur, and working with systems integrators to develop integrated solutions specific to a particular customer. We then apply the lessons from these projects more widely, driving innovation that benefits more customers.

IDIS technology is well aligned to market demand in any case. This means that for systems integrators in the region, an out-of-the-box IDIS solution typically better supports pricing, design, and workflow to make projects faster and more efficient, leading to recurring revenue and upgrades.

There’s also the assurance of forward-andbackward compatibility, making it easy to upgrade with the certainty that when customers want to add a new camera.

Customers are increasingly looking to work with single-source manufacturers that offer one-stop solutions that encompass surveillance equipment, video management software, storage, AI-powered analytics, and network accessories.

This is especially true when it comes to the large deployments often seen in the Middle East.

An equally important development – significant because it plays into improved usability and user value – is the trend towards more effortless, seamless systems integration.

The old silos between systems have long been breaking down, and recently, we have been removing more of the technical barriers to rapid integration. For users, there are significant efficiency and operational gains from linking systems such as video, access control, fire, and wider management systems. Our specialty cameras address the growing trend towards higher resolution, and support the adoption of our expanded AI analytics functions. Our new lineup includes rugged IP66/IK10-rated cameras ideal for the challenging conditions found in the oil & gas, and petrochemicals sector. Our increased technology baseline has helped to further build out our offering at a time of ongoing capital investment in the region and is opening significant opportunities. For example, our Omni-directional Multi-Sensor 20MP Cameras, including IR models, are built to provide outstanding high-resolution video coverage in applications, including critical national infrastructure settings and border security. Rugged construction with IP66 and IK10 ratings makes them ideal even for the region’s most challenging environments. Providing assured high-resolution multi-directional surveillance, these cameras are also an ideal choice for walkways, corridors, communal areas, and all locations where it’s vital to have an all-round view. Reducing the number of stand-alone cameras needed to achieve 360° visibility results in a lower TCO burden (total cost of ownership) and reduces clutter for more streamlined site configurations. Crucially, delivering high-resolution image capture even in challenging lighting conditions – or, with the IR models, in total darkness – these cameras support all of the most powerful analytics functions including IDIS’s most advanced, emerging AI video tools. a&s Middle East: How does IDIS ensure the cybersecurity of its products, particularly in regions with heightened concerns about data privacy and protection?

Choi: Cybersecurity is a growing concern for many users in the Middle East, including small and medium businesses as much as critical infrastructure, so security systems integrators and solutions providers need to understand and address any weaknesses in their systems. For example, cameras and related devices can be attractive targets for bad actors and can allow easy infiltration into wider networks. So, any video technology used should have the assurance of multi-layered protection that covers the capture, transmission, and storage of video data, and manufacturers need to demonstrate that their software and equipment have strong defenses against multiple attack types, and are kept up-to-date.

GCC countries are rapidly expanding existing sectors and investing in new markets to ensure sustainable economic growth and jobs for local citizens Keeping surveillance systems on a separate VLAN is sensible, yet we understand that customers today are looking for increased convenience and flexibility, so hybrid solutions are an attractive option for retaining critical video using private cloud combined with on-premise NVRs. IDIS was among the first manufacturers in the sector to prioritize these issues and we keep them continuously under review.

Cybersecurity is also one of the areas addressed by NDAA compliance, which is now a globally recognized standard, especially for firms that want to do business with the U.S. We are seeing customers increasingly aware of the risks of using non-compliant video equipment with the potential for “back doors” and where there are good alternatives, end-users are voting with their purchasing choices. NDAA-compliant equipment such as IDIS’s gives the assurance of ethical manufacturing origins and eliminates a number of potential risks. a&s Middle East: Can you discuss any notable projects or case studies involving IDIS products in the Middle East, highlighting their performance and client feedback?

Choi: A number of new projects for IDIS in 2024, can now be referenced. These include an IDIS end-to-end solution that was used for a major video upgrade across 69 wells and processing facilities for ENTP, part of Algeria’s state-owned oil company

Sonatrach Group. To ensure efficient response to incidents, improve preventative maintenance, and achieve the safest working conditions with near-incident detection, ENTP embarked on this project to move away from the outdated analog video, taking advantage of advanced and emerging IP video functionalities – including AI analytics and more powerful VMS. The new IDIS solution is designed to ensure long-lasting, optimum camera performance and image quality even in harsh operating environments. As part of the upgrade, ENTP also wanted to significantly expand coverage, removing surveillance blind spots and improving resilience with failover protection against system failures. With extra coverage and higher image quality, ENTP also knew it needed to increase and optimize video data storage capacity, but wanted to do this without adding significantly to operating costs. To address these and other priorities – including demanding project timelines and the need for minimal disruption and system downtime during implementation – the IDIS solution was delivered by integration partner EPE RETELEM SPA. IDIS Middle East’s relationship with Almajal G4S continues to go from strength-tostrength extending beyond GCC nations.

This long-term strategic alliance resulted in one of IDIS’s most significant successes in the Middle East banking sector starting in 2018, which is the biggest IDIS project

The project has now expanded to an impressive 4,300 ATMs, 600 branches, and six commercial office buildings, encompassing over 34,000 cameras with failover SD cards, 500 NVRs connected to 19,000 hard drives providing a year of storage, as well as network accessories, all managed with the entire solution managed using IDIS Solution Suite VMS. This landmark project opened the way for IDIS solutions to be adopted more widely in the region’s banking sector, including in Jordan and Morocco.

Overall, IDIS will focus on all those areas where we are already strong – retail, leisure, and hospitality; banking; education; critical infrastructure including oil and gas; public safety; manufacturing; and transportation. We’ll also look to leverage our experience as new opportunities emerge, for example in the casino market following the announcement the UAE’s first casino will open in 2027. IDIS is in a strong position in this sector, having established partnerships with expert systems integrators with a proven track record. Major upgrades and new rollouts of IDIS AI surveillance have been completed at casino resort hotels in the Adriatic, Southeast Europe, and Northern Cyprus.

It’s worth noting that many of these are owned by large casino operators looking to expand into new geographical regions, including the Middle East.

We should also mention Kortek, IDIS’s sister company, which is one of the world’s leaders in specialist monitors for gaming machines. A significant portion of

the global casino industry utilizes Kortek technology for their slot machines, poker terminals, and table game systems, particularly in the high-end segment, due to its reputation for quality and reliability in demanding gaming environments. a&s Middle East: How has IDIS incorporated AI features such as facial recognition and behavior analysis into its product lineup, and what industries benefit most from these capabilities?

Choi: IDIS customers are increasingly focused on leveraging AI video analytics for new applications beyond security—tapping into enhanced business intelligence tools. For example, one of the most common uses of IDIS facial recognition is to reduce false alarms and deliver highly accurate business intelligence data such as people counting. IDIS Deep Learning Ana-

lytics, whether for security purposes or business intelligence, ensures accurate identification of humans and objects.

Where one customer leads in using this tech, others will follow. We’ve seen this in the retail sector, where a successful multi-branch AI-powered surveillance solution adopted by one customer to improve efficiency and profitability becomes an attractive model for others to follow.

The IDIS DV-1304 Box for Retail provides highly accurate analytics for people counting, directional footfall, heatmaps, occupancy monitoring, etc. Proven inbranch retail applications across Europe and Asia, this technology is now being adopted by well-known sports brands in the Middle East.

It’s hard to predict exactly how the AI video market will develop, but we know that when new technologies emerge, new applications quickly follow. The region has a high proportion of early adopters among end-users, which usually leads to above-typical sales growth in new sectors; that’s precisely what we are seeing.

Learning lessons from beyond the region, Asia’s largest rail network, Indian Railways, has begun using an IDIS video solution integrated with facial recognition as part of an ambitious, multi-phase technology upgrade targeting significant growth. Facial recognition is also a key feature of the upgrade, and this is an area that IDIS is investing in. For example, we are looking to offer it with our video intercoms to strengthen security and increase user convenience through frictionless entry for enrolled users.

Choi: IDIS is focusing on building new commercial partnerships with Middle Eastern systems integrators and thirdparty solutions providers. As part of this, we are looking to make inroads in sectors where we haven’t previously had significant sales. We are also working with partners to develop video applications beyond traditional security and risk management functions. For example, one significant growth driver is AI. Our partnership with Vaidio benefits particularly our large-scale and enterprise users and helps to further increase the accuracy and reliability of our AI video solutions in many verticals, as well as integrated applications IDIS Deep Learning Analytics (IDLA) and IDIS Edge AI cameras already offer users essential AI video analytics, and these capabilities can be further enhanced by specialist solutions from Vaidio, which deliver high reliability, real-time situational information, and search times, and valuable operational data enabling faster responses. New Vaidio AI compliment IDIS Deep Learning Analytics and significantly enhance our Edge AI cameras by adding new functions including facial recognition, anomaly detection, sensor integration, weapon detection, license plate recognition, vehicle make/model, speed detection, and more emerging video analysis.

It means we can meet the increasing demand for hybrid surveillance solutions, supporting the growing number of users who want to store critical video footage in the cloud while keeping the majority of video stored on-premise. a&s Middle East: How do IDIS’s solutions cater to specific sectors in the Middle East, such as retail, healthcare, government, and oil and gas?

Choi: Retail is a particular growth area for IDIS, and our integration partners have had some major recent successes supporting retail chains with ambitious expansion strategies. These fast-growing businesses value video solutions that are easy to replicate and scale and can be integrated with other systems crucial to profitability, most obviously POS and wider ERP systems. Efficient federated architectures have become increasingly attractive to allow centralized monitoring, control, and data analysis from the head office to be combined with local branch-level functionality.

We see similar growth in the closely related leisure and hospitality sectors.

We’ve seen notable demand for casino video solutions in some adjacent territories – the eastern Mediterranean, southeastern Europe, and Türkiye – and the UAE is expected to issue its first casino licenses shortly, so we’re already well positioned to capitalize on new demand in a whole new sector in the Middle East.

We expect tourism and leisure will remain key drivers more generally, and video surveillance has a vital role in security and, increasingly, in supporting more efficient operations and better customer and guest services and experiences in an exceptionally competitive market.

Banking and finance, driven by regulatory compliance around surveillance, has been a strong sector for IDIS MEA for several years. With our systems integration partners, including Almajal G4S, we continue to roll out a large-scale IDIS surveillance project across Saudi National Bank’s (SNB) diverse and dispersed estate. We’ve seen further success with the Central Bank of Jordan and the TokyoMitsubishi Bank. a&s Middle East: How does IDIS view the future of security technology, and what role do you see the company playing in shaping that future, particularly in emerging markets like the Middle East?

Choi: There is continuing demand in the MENA region for reliable, robust security solutions, and IDIS is focused on meeting demand with a pipeline of technology advance-

ments. Increasing concerns about safety, cyber-attacks, and geopolitical uncertainty also drive the focus on enhanced security.

Organizations are looking to improve the protection of sometimes vast sites while also ensuring the safety of people working in often hazardous environments.

For the video surveillance sector, we see the likelihood of strong demand across the board, from public space and authoritymanaged surveillance solutions to private sector applications protecting individual businesses, such as retail and hospitality, within larger developments. IDIS is involved in surveillance projects at all these levels. Since we offer end-to-end solutions, the ability to easily and affordably scale systems up and to incorporate additional sites and more cameras and devices within existing infrastructure has proved to be a critical factor in our success.

We expect strong demand in the construction sector and associated sectors, from transportation and logistics to services, that benefit from significant developments with government funding.

The construction industry in the Middle East is experiencing significant growth.

The market was valued at USD 298 billion in 2023 and is predicted to reach USD 401.17 billion by 2030, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.9% from 2024 to 2030. This growth is driven by substantial investment in infrastructure projects, sustainable practices, and urban development. Countries like Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Kuwait are leading this expansion with numerous large-scale projects - for example, Saudi Arabia’s infrastructure sector saw investments of USD 18 billion in 2023, with significant contributions from the energy and road transport sectors - but we also see developments across all the GCC nations. Many of these projects reflect the region’s continuing ambitions to innovate and create more sustainable, modern, and higher-quality living spaces.

Major construction projects are typically multi-year developments, so adapting and scaling up systems stage by stage is crucial. That doesn’t just mean being able to extend the number of cameras or storage requirements; it also means, knowing that as time passes and priorities change, it will be easy and affordable to enhance systems with emerging capabilities, such as our existing and new AI analytics capabilities, or through third-party integration to eliminate siloed systems and, in turn, further streamline security operations, driving operational efficiency. n

The prevailing “wait-and-see” policy creates a loophole of multi-institutional willful blindness, allow-

Growing digital footprint makes the UAE an attractive target The latest State of the UAE Cybersecurity Report 2025 provides a comprehensive analysis of the nation’s digital landscape, revealing approximately 223,800 digital assets distributed across the country.

Dubai hosts the largest share, accounting for 65 percent of all digital assets, while Abu Dhabi follows with 13 percent. Fujairah holds 11 percent, Sharjah 7 percent, Ajman 3 percent, and Ras Al Khaimah 1 percent. This vast and growing digital footprint has made the country an attractive target for cybercriminals, both state-sponsored and financially motivated, who continue to evolve their attack methodologies.

AI-Powered Cyber Threats Are a New Frontier of Cybercrime Among the most alarming findings in the report is the rise in AI-powered cyber threats. Malicious actors have begun leveraging artificial intelligence for more sophisticated phishing attacks, AIgenerated malware, and deepfake-based fraud. Phishing campaigns have become increasingly convincing, with AI tools crafting personalized and context-aware emails that evade traditional detection mechanisms, significantly increasing their success rate.

UAE-based financial institutions and multinational corporations reported a sharp rise in spear-phishing campaigns target-

ing high-profile executives, leading to increased credential theft and unauthorized access to sensitive systems.

A particularly notable incident involved a deepfake audio attack that successfully impersonated a UAE corporate executive, tricking employees into transferring funds to fraudulent accounts. Iranian hackers have also engaged in disinformation campaigns by broadcasting fake news on UAE television streams using deepfake technology, further undermining trust in media.

AI-driven reconnaissance tools have enabled state-sponsored groups to map vulnerabilities in the UAE’s critical infrastructure with unprecedented precision, significantly increasing the risk of cyber espionage. State-sponsored actors are also integrating AI into their attack frame-

works to automate reconnaissance, exploit identification, and lateral movement within networks. In one case, an APT group used AI-driven tools to map vulnerabilities in the UAE’s critical infrastructure, targeting OT environments and posing heightened risks to national security and economic stability. AI-generated polymorphic malware was deployed in an attack against a UAE-based energy firm, allowing adversaries to bypass traditional security measures by rewriting their code in real time to evade detection.

From Safe AI Framework to the Crystal Ball In response to these AI-driven threats, the UAE has adopted several proactive measures. The government has integrated AI-based cybersecurity solutions into its National Cybersecurity Strategy to enhance national cyber resilience.

Public awareness campaigns have been launched to educate businesses and the public about AI-related cyber risks, such as phishing scams and deepfakes.

Additionally, the UAE has developed the Crystal Ball platform, a next-generation AI information-sharing tool for over 68 nations, aimed at fostering collaboration in combating cyber threats. The platform promotes global intelligence sharing, attribution of cyber incidents, and effective deterrence of cybercriminals.

It also stresses securing leadership support and establishing accountability to prioritize human welfare and ethical compliance throughout the AI lifecycle.

The framework also focuses on model development and deployment, encouraging organizations to conduct thorough impact assessments and establish clear policies for data usage, ownership, and storage.

It advocates for responsible training of AI models, setting standards for human oversight, and implementing comprehensive testing and incident response strategies to ensure that AI systems function ethically and with transparency.

Lastly, the framework prioritizes security and privacy, advising organizations to adopt robust controls and conduct vulnerability assessments on AI systems. By using zero-trust principles, organizations

can secure AI infrastructure and maintain a secure runtime environment. This part of the framework also addresses the importance of compliance with privacy regulations and safeguarding user data, ensuring that AI technologies do not become conduits for malicious activities.

By embracing these principles, the Safe AI Framework provides organizations with the tools to harness the power of AI while maintaining a responsible approach to its use. As AI continues to evolve, this framework represents a proactive step towards guiding businesses in securing their AIdriven initiatives, preventing abuse, and fostering trust among stakeholders and regulators.

Cyberattacks Inflict Massive Financial Losses The financial consequences of cyberattacks in the UAE have been severe. The average cost of a data breach in the Middle East, including the UAE, reached $8.75 million, making it the second-highest globally. The financial burden is further exacerbated by understaffed security teams that experience higher losses due to delayed responses. Conversely, organizations that extensively use AI in security operations have been able to reduce their breach costs, showcasing

Data destruction attacks on the rise Ransomware remains a significant and growing threat in the UAE. The number of active ransomware groups has increased by 58 percent in 2024, further complicating the country’s cybersecurity landscape.

Newcomers such as DarkVault, Qilin, RansomEXX, and KillSec have emerged, joining the ranks of more established ransomware groups. LockBit3, which dominated ransomware activity in 2023 with 31 percent of attacks, saw its share drop to 16 percent in 2024. Meanwhile, RansomHub accounted for 13 percent of ransomware incidents, indicating its rising influence in the UAE’s cyber landscape.

Several ransomware groups that were active in 2023, including Clop, Alphv, Dragonforce, among others, have disappeared from UAE-focused cyber activities in 2024. The ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) model has expanded in the UAE, supported by a network of underground affiliates who help cybercriminals deploy ransomware more effectively.

In addition to ransomware threats, data destruction attacks have increased by 22 percent, signaling a shift toward cyber disruption rather than purely financial extortion. This growing trend suggests that attackers are now motivated by more than just financial gain, as they seek to cause lasting damage to organizations and infrastructure.

DDoS Attack Trends The UAE has witnessed a dramatic decline in Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, with incidents dropping from 58,538 attacks in 2023 to just 2,301 in 2024, marking a 96.09 percent reduction. However, while local attacks have decreased significantly, global DDoS attack volume has increased by 0.8 percent. The maximum bandwidth of DDoS attacks in the UAE has fallen, dropping from 266.9 Gbps to 85.92 Gbps, a decline of 67.7 percent.

Hacktivist groups targeted UAE-based en-

tities with DDoS attacks early in 2024, but this activity declined in the fourth quarter due to a combination of law enforcement crackdowns and stricter social media regulations.

Infostealers for Sale at US$10 The research shows a growing prevalence of infostealer malware in the UAE, with RedLine Stealer emerging as the most dominant threat, responsible for 69.9% of infections. This malware was found on the highest number of compromised systems in the region, posing a significant risk to security. On Windows-based personal devices, these infections occur when victims sync their Google Password Manager in the Chrome browser between their corporate and personal systems.

Inexpensive malware-as-a-service (MaaS) infostealers, which are sold on Dark Web forums for as little as US$10, are commonly used by cybercriminals to steal and resell credentials.

The research found that 54,655 compromised passwords were between 1 to 8 characters long, 107,478 were between 9 to 12 characters, and 75,976 exceeded 12 characters in length. In

total, 238,109 unique passwords were leaked by infostealers, and 77.04% of them met the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) password length guidelines, with at least 12 characters.

Despite this, the exposure of these passwords highlights an important issue: long passwords alone are insufficient if they are compromised through malware attacks.

Phishing Tactics and Targets in 2024 Phishing email campaigns surged in 2024, with Microsoft 365 impersonation scams being among the most effective. Cybercriminals also targeted UAE telecom companies like Etisalat, Aramex, and DEWA, tricking employees and customers into divulging sensitive credentials.

In the first half of 2024, the CPX Threat Hunting team uncovered activities related to the MINIBUS and MINBIKE backdoors, attributed to an Iranian threat actor. The campaign utilized spearphishing emails with fake job offer links to deliver the malicious payload. These attacks employed DLL search order hijacking for persistence and leveraged

Exploitation of Public-facing Applications The report also describes the exploitation of both N-day and Zero-day vulnerabilities in public-facing applications as a source of risk in the UAE. These attacks are typically opportunistic, launching immediately after the disclosure of proofof-concept (PoC) exploit code. A large portion of these scanning activities has been traced back to IP addresses associated with Linode, LLC, a cloud hosting provider. At present, no specific threat actor has been linked to the vulnerability scans. In April 2024, CPX identified multiple exploit attempts targeting the OS Command Injection Vulnerability CVE-2024-3400 in GlobalProtect, with attempts to deploy RedTail Cryptominers.

The increase in exploitation of these vulnerabilities affects various industries, particularly the government and healthcare sectors. Zero-day vulnerabilities are those unknown to the vendor, meaning no patch, mitigation, or fix is available, while N-day vulnerabilities are known but unpatched flaws, with the average mean time to patch (MTTP) ranging from 60 to 150 days.

ing it more challenging to defend against than traditional malware or exploit-based attacks. Many of the observed campaigns involved spear-phishing links impersonating Microsoft 365, which were used to steal credentials and gain unauthorized access to email and VPN services. Once inside, attackers sought to abuse and exfiltrate critical data.

Additionally, the team tracked a surge in payment card phishing campaigns impersonating prominent UAE organizations such as Etisalat, DEWA, Aramex UAE, and DHL. In May 2024, threat actors were found sending phishing emails with ZIP attachments containing an executable file that installed LockBit Black ransomware.

Exploitation of Vulnerabilities and Patch Delays Other organizations in the UAE continue to struggle with patching critical vulnerabilities in a timely manner, leaving them susceptible to cyberattacks.

In 2024, OpenSSH vulnerabilities continued to pose a significant challenge for cybersecurity professionals, with several high-severity flaws identified.

Among these, CVE-2023-38408, the most widespread vulnerability, involves Forwarded SSH-Agent Remote Code Execution, carrying a critical CVSS score of 9.8. With 33.3% of devices affected, it allows attackers to remotely execute malicious code, presenting a serious threat to network security.

Another notable vulnerability dubbed “regreSSHion,” allows Unauthenticated Code Execution on glibc-based Linux systems. With a CVSS score of 8.1 and affecting 16.7% of systems, this flaw highlights the importance of robust authentication protocols. These vulnerabilities demonstrate the need for organizations to address not just remote code execution but also threats that could disrupt network availability.

Overall, cybersecurity incidents were largely driven by misconfiguration, tuning, and change requests, which accounted for 32% of all reported cases. Improper usage and unlawful activity followed closely at 19%, while scans, probes, and attempted unauthorized access made up 15%. Additionally, email fraud, phishing, and spoofing incidents represented 12% of the total, underscoring the ongoing need for continuous user education and robust email security measures.

Malicious code, including viruses, worms, and Trojan horses, was involved in 9%

of incidents, highlighting the importance of advanced malware detection and response systems. Unauthorized access also accounted for 9% of incidents, signaling potential weaknesses in access control mechanisms, which could be mitigated by strengthening these controls and implementing multi-factor authentication.

Finally, web application attacks, though less frequent, represented 4% of the incidents, indicating either the effectiveness of current security measures or a strategic shift by attackers to exploit more vulnerable targets.

Sectoral Impact The most targeted industries included government entities, which experienced 34.9 percent of cyber incidents, followed by the finance sector at 21.3 percent, energy at 14.1 percent, defense at 6.6 percent, and healthcare at 6.7 percent.

Notably, 77 percent of incidents were classified as critical, high, or medium severity, posing substantial risks to business continuity and operations.

Shifting Attack Vectors and Growing Risks In 2024, a significant shift was observed in the initial attack vectors used by threat actors targeting organizations in the UAE. As described, phishing incidents remained steady, but the category of “unknown (possibly phishing)” highlighted the continued relevance and potential overlap of phishing with other attack methods.

Another persistent threat was web server compromises, which accounted for 11% of the total incidents, emphasizing

abilities in web applications to distribute malware. These trends underscore the evolving nature of cyber threats and the critical importance of adapting security strategies to address emerging risks. the need for organizations to strengthen security measures around web servers to prevent exploitation.

Malware delivery methods also showed a shift, with a decrease in direct installs and an increase in web application attack delivery methods. The percentage of malware directly installed on a victim’s machine dropped from 36% in 2023 to 11% in 2024, suggesting that attackers are increasingly favoring indirect methods. Web application attacks, which accounted for 11% of malware delivery in 2024, highlight a growing focus on exploiting vulner-

When these gaps mix with regulatory loopholes and poor coordination between agencies, traffickers have all the cover they need to keep moving funds and scaling their operations unnoticed. a&s Middle East: How can partnerships between public agencies and private financial institutions be strengthened to more effectively trace and disrupt the money flow behind human trafficking networks?

Koss: Partnerships work best when they move past regulatory boxticking and become real collaborations. Financial institutions need clear patterns and indicators so they can flag suspicious activity early. Joint task forces, shared intelligence, and training help close the gap between what banks see and law enforcement needs.

But barriers still exist. Institutions need the green light and protection to share intelligence without fearing legal blowback.

Regulators play a big role here. They must create clear rules that protect good-faith efforts. Ultimately, this is about trust and teamwork. When those are in place, we can truly disrupt trafficking money flows. a&s Middle East: What role does technology such as blockchain analytics or AI-driven monitoring play in detecting trafficking-related financial activity?

Koss: Technology is reshaping the fight. Blockchain analytics make it harder for traffickers to hide behind cryptocurrency by tracking transactions across public ledgers. AI helps financial institutions scan billions of data points to spot odd patterns, from microtransactions to suspicious behavior.

AI can now even flag trafficking indicators in online chats, recruitment posts, and dark web discussions. Network analysis connects the dots faster than ever before. But traffickers are moving fast, too. If we don’t invest in advanced AI now, we’ll stay behind. This isn’t optional - it’s essential if we want to get ahead of organized trafficking networks. a&s Middle East: In cross-border investigations, what are the most significant challenges to public-private cooperation, and how have you seen them successfully overcome?

Koss: Cross-border work is still incredibly difficult. Different countries have different laws, definitions of trafficking, and privacy rules, which can slow down or block the sharing of critical information. Too often, teams wait for formal agreements, losing valuable time and leads in the process.

We need to reinforce that initial intelligence can and should be shared in good faith, while evidentiary material can follow through formal mechanisms like Mutual Legal Assistance Treaties (MLATs), Multilateral Legal Assistance (MLA) frameworks, or letters rogatory. Delaying action until those legal instruments are activated often results in lost leads or missed rescue opportunities.

Even something as simple as exchange programs where analysts work side-by-side can build the trust needed to break down silos.

Ultimately, it’s human trust and operational flexibility that make cross-border success possible. a&s Middle East: Can you share an example where collaboration between law enforcement and the private sector directly led to dismantling a transnational criminal network?

Koss: Every major investigation I’ve worked on proves one thing: traffickers run like businesses. To shut them down, you have to hit their money. Following the cash, seizing assets, and cutting off their financial lifelines are essential, and private sector partners are critical in that process.

Financial firms, fintech platforms, and logistics companies usually spot the warning signs first. But they often hold back due to legal risks or unclear policies. I’ve seen investigations stall because of this. I’ve also seen them succeed when private partners worked directly with law enforcement from the start. That’s the key.

Private players aren’t bystanders – they’re on the front lines.

When they are part of the process from day one, investigations move faster and have more impact. Real integration, not just cooperation, makes the difference between missing and dismantling these networks. a&s Middle East: What reforms or regulatory shifts do you believe are urgently needed to better align global financial systems with anti-slavery efforts?

Koss: If we want to stop traffickers, we need to close the loopholes they love. One of the biggest issues is anonymous shell companies. Without global rules making company ownership public, investigators often hit dead ends.

We also need banks to actively look for trafficking risks, especially in high-risk industries like shipping, hospitality, and recruitment. Sharing data is another problem. Too often, banks hesitate to share early-stage intelligence, which slows everything down. They need legal clarity and protection to act when it matters most.

Fear of liability still stops good-faith efforts. Regulators must make sure that proactive steps are protected. Finally, fighting slavery should be part of due diligence standards, and companies and investors need to be held accountable if they are linked to exploitation. The goal is simple: make trafficking harder to hide, easier to report, and impossible to ignore. a&s Middle East: As COO of Stingbase, how does your organization work to bridge intelligence gaps between law enforcement and private sector stakeholders globally?

On the aesthetic level, the design remit includes trends in contemporary architecture or designing products with minimal visual impact to retrofit historic buildings.

“At the Norwegian Opera and Ballet on Oslo’s waterfront, ASSA ABLOY worked with Norwegian architects Snøhetta and Swiss manufacturer Glutz to combine an access solution with a custom-designed handle to complement the space and

meet the design vision for the site,” explains Perla Munhoz.

But important as they are, aesthetics is just one aspect among many: security, usability, reliability, sustainability ease of installation, maintenance and so on.

For example, the range of ASSA ABLOY Cam-Motion Door Closers works aesthetically in all kinds of modern environments.

However, product design was also conceived from the start to provide concrete benefits to installers. Each closer’s symmetric cam design enables fitting in any of four mounting positions: to the door leaf or frame, push or pull side. A grooved spindle with 14mm height adjustment offers flexibility and compensates for minor installation imprecision. These features make fitting quicker and more accurate – saving installers’ time and customers’ money.

“This kind of end-to-end thinking is fundamental to good product design,” she adds.

A history of pioneering product design ASSA ABLOY has long instilled design thinking throughout its global organization.

They have invested in creating devices and user experience (UX) to meet the changing demands of contemporary buildings and their designers. This investment has

been rewarded with a catalogue of awards for innovation and smart product design.

ASSA ABLOY hardware has won Red Dot Awards on multiple occasions. In 2023, their eCLIQ key-operated digital locking system was awarded the PLUS X AWARD in four categories: innovation, quality, ease of use, and functionality – all categories where design sensibility is a key factor during product development.

The Aperio H100, a revolutionary door device with digital access technology inside a battery-powered handle, was named winner at EUIPO’s DesignEuropa Awards and the German Design Council’s Iconic Award: Innovative Interior.

Two years running, new ASSA ABLOY escape door devices – the effeff ePED and ABLOY Security Door Closer with integrated latch bolt and escape door strike – won major building trade awards presented at BAU, in Munich.

“Innovation, utility, value and digitalization potential are all incorporated at the early stages of our product design processes,” says Kelly Gill, Chief Technology Officer at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions EMEIA.

Out of sight: product design ‘under the hood’ Every aspect of hardware performance is impacted by design decisions taken at

the earliest stages of product development. Design in this sense has been at the heart of ASSA ABLOY’s mission during its long history innovating mechanical security. An ASSA ABLOY company originally patented the design for the Euro lock format, in 1928. It is now an industry standard design, adopted everywhere.

The latest generation of ASSA ABLOY mechanical locking solutions have several patented design features for ease of use and enhanced security.

“Who knows, these, too, may one day become industry standards!” says Kelly Gill. “At ASSA ABLOY innovation does not sleep. It in the company DNA. It always has been.”

In the security space, toughness and reliability have often been prioritized over aesthetics, and without doubt durability is a key measuring stick. Mechanical components at ASSA ABLOY are engineered to meet or exceed all relevant national and regional performance standards.

“Our product designers never forget that our hardware, devices and technologies do not usually operate in ideal ‘laboratory’ conditions,” adds Kelly Gill. “They are created and tested for the real world.”

For example, battery powered digital devices may need to work reliably outdoors, sometimes in extreme climates. Interior deployments may be in a hospital or school where devices may not always be treated with care. Product durability and reliability are non-negotiable, whatever the environment.

The growing importance of software design As business increasingly digitalizes, product design must encompass more than tangible physical items. The software interface is the point of contact between a security team and their chosen digital access system – and undoubtedly the part which receives the most daily interaction.

It is critical that manufacturers get soft-

ware right. Intelligent UX design makes software solutions more efficient and helps organizations to maximize the return from their investment in hardware.

The recently launched ABLOY Cumulus API- and SDK-led access solution won International Security Journal’s 2024 Leaders in Security Awards. It was also named winner in the Innovation Initiative category, alongside similar awards from Detektor and Fire & Security Matters.

Intelligent software design can also help streamline workflows for those who specify access solutions. Openings Studio software, for example, simplifies collaboration and data sharing among building project stakeholders. It even helps manage openings over the full project life-cycle, from planning and estimation to installation and beyond.

“Openings Studio has always been helpful in projects,” explains Gaurav Nirmalkar, Designer at leading Indian architects, Edifice.

Generative AI is becoming understood, widely used and its complexity and computing demand is rapidly expanding. The US leads the world in data center numbers, housing over 5,300 as of March 2024, but this growth will see data center demand double or triple in the very short term. Inside the server room and out, the data center industry is now stretching to meet demand.

The rapid expansion of digital infrastructure is, on the surface, at odds with green initiatives. AI needs power, and lots of it.

This puts broad constraints on data center locations, which require ready connectivity to an adequate supply, and US provision of renewable energy is lacking – only 9 per cent of energy use in 2023 came from sustainable sources. The American data center industry has no choice but to navigate its journey of expansion in a sustainable and responsible way from top to bottom, but it is clear that it will not be easy.

Sustainability, four ways Outside of energy requirements, data center companies need to consider four

key pillars of sustainability when creating new sites or upgrading existing facilities: physical security; operational efficiencies; disaster resistance; and cyber-security.

None of these can be ignored, and all offer opportunities to act in a more sustainable manner.

The problem is that the industry is necessarily working fast. Implementing fresh solutions to these pillars while attempting to maintain sustainable principles is difficult enough, but they must also be the correct solutions. The pace of data center expansion means it is all too easy to overlook the obvious. You can be sustai-

nable, but you must also be clever, and an intelligent choice of technology is vital.

The importance of ingenuity Take security, for instance. A simple switch to high-quality thermal, infra-red and low-light cameras can help deal with security concerns at night, while removing the need for additional lighting and improving the operational efficiency of a data center. But that is only their most simplistic use case. Cameras can do so much more than stream video. They are the most powerful sensors a site has, picking

power use, but they are a drop in the ocean. Only a massive increase in the availability of sustainable power will guarantee the future of digital infrastructure.

Barriers to overcome

Just as the world’s use of AI expands, so can AI use within the data center. The same camera that powers the security function can monitor the people on site.

It might use AI-based techniques to detect if proper PPE is being worn, see if an employee has fallen, tie in with access control systems to help count staff in the case of an evacuation, or even alert to loitering in restricted areas.

One sensor, many uses Within the server room cameras can protect entire racks, acting as a vital visual

indicator for overheating, detecting smoke or fire and working with other sensors to assist with more complex operations such as cooling adjustments. And the right cameras, built with cyber-security principles from end to end, offer operators assurance that they cannot be used as a convenient IoT tunnel into a data center’s wider network.

These functions only skim the surface of what a single sensor can do today, and it is certain that more efficiency and functionality will be discovered as data center sites evolve. These sensors are the backbone of internal change and can help in a small way to reduce data center

Renewables are not yet popular with the public. In contrast to the rapid expansion of data centers, the US saw twice as many solar and wind installations blocked as were built over the past decade. This is despite the US Department of Energy’s target of reaching 100 per cent carbon pollution-free energy by 2035. In contrast to many European nations, the Americas are far behind the renewable curve.

The good news is that the power consumption of data center’s puts operators in a powerful position as the driving force of sustainable energy solutions. Some data center sites have developed their own solar and wind stations, often in very remote areas, enabled by remote monitoring and administration. Operators have invested in green energy power purchase agreements (PPAs), helping to grow the renewable industry. Data centers can even act as grid stabilizers, using latent power and balancing renewable energy with fossil fuel power as the grid requires.

The green power magnet They key, though, is that data centers will always prioritize power availability. There is worldwide competition for countries to become the most skilled and capable providers of AI technology, making geography mostly irrelevant. Operators hold a powerful lobbying position because data centers will line up to purchase green power if it is available – in the Americas or elsewhere.

Those countries, states and cities which prioritize renewables and go beyond global targets are those that will thrive in this new AI economy. And while data center providers focus on the big picture outside of the server room, they can lean on smarter, safer sustainability solutions within their walls in order to stay secure without worry. n

Returning to Seoul for SECON & eGISEC 2025 felt less like a routine business trip and more like stepping back into the command center of the global security industry. That was my first impression on this second visit to Korea’s premier security trade event.

As someone who had already experienced the sheer scale and ambition of this event, I thought I knew what to expect. But I was wrong. This year’s edition didn’t just match my previous impressions—it surpassed them in every possible way.

With the generous support of our Korean hosts, I had the privilege of immersing myself once again in the world’s fastestevolving sector. SECON has long held a special place on our calendar, and this year, with over 410 exhibitors from 15 countries and nearly 26,000 industry professionals in attendance, it reaffirmed its role as Asia’s undisputed leader in integrated security events.

AI Isn’t Coming—It’s Already in Command If there’s one overarching theme that defined SECON & eGISEC 2025, it was clear: artificial intelligence is no longer a futuristic talking point—it’s the new foundation. Under the event’s guiding theme, “A New Security Paradigm Powered by AI,” we witnessed firsthand how AI is being embedded deep within the architecture of both physical and cyber security solutions.

From video surveillance and access control to threat detection and identity management, AI wasn’t just sprinkled in—it was the engine driving innovation. One standout example came from Hanwha Vision’s AI BOX, a modular system that brings AI analytics to standard cameras, along with Dynamic Privacy Masking (DPM) to meet worker safety standards.

IDIS, another industry heavyweight, showcased its NOVA Line equipped with a 1-inch image sensor and robust AI analytics for situational awareness.

IntelliVIX’s Gen AMS was another highlight for us: an AI-powered system that generates surveillance logs autonomously using generative AI, showing just how far automation in this space has come.

Meanwhile, iNNODEP demonstrated its MLOps-based auto-labelling technology

for large-scale video analytics, underscoring a clear direction: scale and precision must now go hand in hand.

Bridging Physical and Cyber Domains SECON has always been about more than just technology displays; it’s about demonstrating integration across disciplines.

Nowhere was this more apparent than in the convergence of physical and cyber domains. We’re witnessing a maturing approach where access control, video analytics, and cybersecurity operate in synchrony, not isolation.

Suprema’s BioStar X caught our attention for this very reason. By merging facial recognition-based access control with AI-enhanced video analytics and

automating actions like product delivery post-verification, the solution redefined operational fluidity. Deepnoid’s SkyMaruSecurity, which uses real-time X-ray image analysis to identify 20 types of prohibited items, pushed the frontier of aviation security with remarkable efficiency.

The eGISEC segment of the event, with its dedicated focus on cybersecurity and digital transformation, offered a compelling look into the future of Zero Trust architecture. With presentations from players like AhnLab, whose XDR platform integrates AI-based threat detection and a large language model (LLM) assistant for log analysis, it became evident that adaptive, behavior-driven security is quickly becoming the gold standard.

Weeds Korea’s BlackBox Suite and Pribit’s PacketGo ZTNA stood out as mature, ready-for-market solutions designed around continuous verification and personalized data protection. These were not concepts in development—they were already protecting networks in real time.

International Collaboration and Insight Exchange Aside from the products and the sessions, one of the most enriching aspects of SECON is always the people. We held numerous high-value meetings with longstanding partners and new prospects alike. These conversations provided vital insights into the evolving security priorities across East Asia. The Korean market, in particular, continues to be a beacon of innovation, especially when it comes to implementing smart city frameworks and scalable AI deployments.

Thanks to the warm hospitality of our partners and the tireless effort of the organizers, we had meaningful exchanges not just about technologies, but about strategies, cultural nuances, and longterm cooperation. The Hosted Buyer Program alone facilitated over 530 business matchmaking sessions. With representatives from 35 countries, the cross-pollination of ideas and perspectives was both rich and instructive.

What made the event even more impactful was its simultaneous hosting of the UNIDO ITPO Korea delegation program, connecting industry professionals with policymakers from 24 developing countries. These conversations reminded us that while the tools may evolve rapidly, security remains a global, shared concern—and so does the responsibility to get it right.

Reflections on the Conference Sessions With 26 conference tracks and 116 sessions, SECON 2025 was also an intellectual feast. From Advanced Persistent Threats (APT) and DDoS trends to deepfake mitigation and smart city integration, the knowledge exchange was intense.

It was a pleasure listening to Mr. Young Suk Lee from Korea’s Ministry of the Interior and Safety, who emphasized the need for cross-sector collaboration to combat rising cybercrime. Meanwhile, Oh Jun Yoon from the National Intelligence Service laid out an equally compelling vision of security resilience through AI, automation, and intelligence sharing. These were not theoretical proposals—they

were backed by data, use cases, and clear implementation roadmaps.

The discussions highlighted how the Zero Trust model is no longer an option, but a necessity. In an era of fragmented networks and ever-more creative attack vectors, only adaptive and integrated approaches can deliver true peace of mind.

What I Took Home This year’s visit to SECON wasn’t just about seeing what’s new—it was about seeing what’s next. And what’s next is clear: we are transitioning into a phase where traditional security boundaries no longer apply. AI has become the common thread stitching together physical infrastructure, digital environments, and human behavior.

There’s also a noticeable shift from reactive to proactive models. Whether through real-time monitoring, generative log reporting, or predictive behavior analysis, the goal now is to detect and defuse threats before they materialize.

From a&s Middle East’s standpoint, our second participation at SECON has once again proven immensely valuable. The access to emerging technologies, the depth of strategic dialogue, and the scale of international engagement all confirmed that Seoul is not just a venue—it’s a hub where the future of security is being designed, tested, and launched.
