$22 BILLION GROWTH TO 2028 ANTICIPATED FOR MANAGED SECURITY SERVICES
The global Managed Security Services market size is expected to grow from USD 30.6 billion in 2023 to USD 52.9 billion by 2028 at a healthy CAGR of 11.5% during the forecast period.
This latest information comes from research firm, Marketsandmarkets, whose analysts suggest that the escalation of cyber-attacks and sophisticated breaches across enterprises are driving organisations to seek expert help in navigating the complex and ever-evolving threat landscape. In addition, the stringent government regulations are demanding robust data security further driving the global managed security services market. The fully managed segment is expected to see continued growth in the coming years as organisations seeking complete control and minimal involvement in security operations opt for fully managed MSS. This provides hands-off security with minimal resource allocation from the in-house team. Organisations can align their resources and efforts with strategic initiatives rather than dedicating significant resources to security operations.
SMEs often lack the in-house cyber security expertise to manage and protect their
digital assets effectively. MSS provides access to skilled professionals who can address their security needs without requiring internal expertise in a myriad of applications, services, and content for businesses and consumers.
The Middle East & Africa Managed security services market anticipates sustained explosive growth, driven by government policies, cloud adoption, the talent gap, and a growing focus on digitalisation, with
businesses across the region increasingly relying on MSS partners to navigate the complex cyber landscape and safeguard their valuable assets.
The major vendors covered in the MSS market include payers from all over the globe, for example, IBM, NTT, Accenture, DXC Technology, Secureworks, Trustwave, Atos, Orange Cyberdefense, Fujitsu, AT&T, Verizon, Cisco, Infosys, Lumen, Nokia, and Trend Micro to name just a few. n
NEC FACE RECOGNITION TECHNOLOGY RANKS FIRST IN NIST ACCURACY TESTING
NEC Corporation announced that its face recognition technology has been ranked the world’s most accurate in a benchmark test conducted by the globally recognized U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
In this benchmark test, NEC received the highest performance evaluation in “1:N Identification,” which consists of still images of 12 million different people, by achieving an authentication accuracy rate of 99.88%.
NEC also ranked first in three other tests – including an aging effects test, in which photos taken more than 10 years prior were used for identification – and placed in the top three in all categories of the Face Recognition Technology Evaluation (FRTE) 1:N Identification leaderboard that are posted on the NIST website. Since beginning participation in 2009, NEC has ranked first in the world multiple times in the “1:N Identification” test, which calls for the highest accuracy of all of the face recognition bench-
marks conducted by NIST. While working to improve the performance of its core algorithm, NEC has simultaneously rolled out real-world implementations of face recognition, and its face recognition business now operates in more than 50 countries and regions around the world.
NEC face recognition technology has been implemented at approximately 80 airports worldwide and is used in applications including immigration, customs, boarding procedures and customer service. These applications have become one of the primary use cases of face recognition technology. In addition, more than 1,000 organizations have adopted NeoFace Monitor, a system that allows users to log in to their devices using face recognition, improving both security and convenience. NEC also continues to be an industry leader in the provision of face recognition cloud services, including more than 1 million registered users in Japan. n

National ID
Biometrics is a key solution for governments to better control who has enrolled in national benefit programs. A shared database also helps track illegal immigration and unlawful entry.
Access Control
Within an airport, there are many restricted areas. the iCAM D2000 can be set up at these stations to only grant access to those with access privileges.
For over 25 years, Iris ID has pioneered iris recognition technology. Our technology is now helping airports secure airport personnel as well as make traveling safer for passengers nationwide and globally. Iris technology is a proven solution to help reduce long lines and repetitive steps during the travel and immigration process. Iris technology is the way for better efficiency and safety; we are seeing it now.
Ideal Authentication Solution for Aviation
Iris recognition is the perfect solution for both air travelers and airport security professionals and is in use at 40 US airports and 33 airports globally. It ensures fast throughput at security checkpoints by employing the most secure and accurate form of non-invasive biometric authentication. The iris alone has 240 recognition points - far more than fingerprint and facial technologies - supporting higher security, fewer false positives, and absolutely no opportunity for bias. Unlike ID cards and passports alone, a person’s unique iris pattern is not susceptible to theft, loss, or compromise. This makes iris recognition technology highly reliable and uniquely suited to accurately authenticate and verify identities.
In an airport operation, iris recognition’s unique capabilities increase security, speed, and user satisfaction when used for personal identification. Full enrollment with instruction can take less than 2 minutes. Once enrolled, authenticating an individual takes less than 2 seconds and allows for an entirely touchless access control experience.
Making security check-in faster, frictionless, and more secure presents a win-win for both travelers and airport management. The same holds true for protecting secured areas, where fast, accurate authentication of staff, vendors, and third-party contracted workers increases security and improves operations.
Biometric Badge System Ensures Security and Privacy
The implementation of a biometric badge process within the CATSA network promises to revolutionize airport security while ensuring a seamless customer experience. Here’s how it works: Upon enrollment, a user’s information is entered at the enrollment/badge station. Next, an encrypted iris template is cre-
ated, which is then encoded onto a smart card. This smart card, containing the iris template, is printed and given to the user for authentication purposes.
The key component of this process is the iCAM, which is embedded with a smart card reader and serves as the verification station. When the user presents their card/badge to the smart card reader in the iCAM, an audio prompt is generated.
Following this prompt, the iCAM captures the user’s iris images, converts them into iris templates, and matches them to those read from the smart card. If a match is found, an authorization request is sent to the access control system, allowing the user entry.
The advantages of this system are manifold. Firstly, the absence of a central database of iris templates enhances security and privacy, as there is no single point of vulnerability. Furthermore, no network connections from the iCAM to a

server are required, minimizing infrastructure dependencies and potential points of failure. Most importantly, users retain full control over their biometric data, promoting trust and compliance.
Moreover, iris recognition technology offers several inherent benefits. Its accuracy and reliability surpass other alternatives, ensuring robust security measures. Additionally, the unique iris pattern is formed early in life and remains stable throughout one’s lifespan, facilitating quick and efficient enrollment and authentication processes.
The non-invasive and touchless nature of iris recognition adds to its appeal, eliminating the need for physical contact during authentication. Furthermore, the expandable, scalable, and flexible nature of iris templates ensures compatibility with existing security systems while accommodating future growth and technological advancements. n

DATA STEWARDSHIP IN THE DIGITAL AGE
DATA PRIVACY MANAGER: A ROADMAP TO COMPLIANCE WITH SAUDI ARABIA’S PERSONAL DATA PROTECTION LAW
Global trends have been moving towards creating a worldwide web of data protection legislation, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is no exception
n By: Marijan Bračić marijan.bracic@legit.eu
In September 2023, the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority officially released the Personal Data Protection Law - PDPL. The law will become fully enforceable on September 14th, 2024, giving organizations a one-year window to ready themselves for compliance. PDPL marks a significant milestone as it represents the first privacy law in Saudi Arabia. While it aligns with international privacy standards, like the EU General Data Protection Regulation, it incorporates localized elements that cater to Middle Eastern cultural identity and adopts the latest guidelines and mechanisms to ensure the effective implementation of the law.
Start Your Data Privacy Compliance Journey
The global data privacy landscape is complex and continues to evolve, presenting various challenges for organizations by creating uncertainty on multiple levels. The introduction of the PDPL means that there will be a significant impact on organizations that operate in or do business with Saudi Arabia; they will need to develop data privacy programs and automate their processes to meet the strict requirements of the law.
Implication for Businesses
Data protection extends beyond safeguarding personal data and involves ensuring its lawful processing. Translated, this entails marketing that stays within its lines, implementing technical and organizational measures when sharing data with third parties, or ensuring transparent communication and data collection strictly focused on what is necessary. Companies that fail to comply risk financial penalties, operational inefficiencies, intervention by regulators, and loss of customer trust.
The best way to avoid these uncertainties is to understand compliance obligations and cooperate with experts who can help
you navigate the complexities of the PDPL to ensure you can continue your business processes with confidence.
To assist organizations in their journey towards PDPL compliance, innovative services and solutions like State-of-Privacy-Assessment (SOPA) and Data Privacy Manager (DPM) have emerged as invaluable resources.
Assessing the State of Your Privacy Program
Most organizations feel overwhelmed when embarking on their compliance journey. The recommendation is to start with conducting privacy assessments. By evaluating your privacy program, you can gain a thorough understanding of data
42 www.asmideast.com PRODUCTS & SYSTEMS
practices, pinpoint risks, and implement necessary adjustments. However, internal audits may be challenging due to limited knowledge, resources, tools, staff, or internal biases. This is where external audits can prove instrumental in building a robust privacy management program.
State-of-Privacy-Assessment Tailored to Your Needs
The State-of-Privacy-Assessment (SOPA) is an external independent assessment focused on providing an objective insight into your organization’s current state of privacy and data protection affairs.
SOPA assesses your privacy practices, compliance with regulations, and the effectiveness of your privacy program. Its goal is to offer an impartial evaluation of your organization’s privacy efforts, create a roadmap for your privacy program, and pinpoint areas for improvement.
SOPA is offered in two tiers: SOPA and SOPA Plus. The standard SOPA serves as an initial or regular assessment, ensuring ongoing compliance. It provides a Privacy Maturity Report with recommendations for improvement. On the other hand, SOPA Plus offers a more comprehensive audit, delivering an in-depth assessment to establish a strong foundation for privacy compliance.
More than a surface-level examination will be required to truly understand the current state of privacy affairs within your or-
ganization. SOPA offers a systematic and structured approach, incorporating workshops that provide value to your team grounded in the principles of the NIST Privacy Framework, emphasizing the application of organizational strategies and cutting-edge technical safeguards.
Use DPM AI Data Discovery to Map All Personal Data
As an organization, you are accountable not only for the data you know you have but also for data hidden across your systems; that is why creating a map of your personal data is crucial.
Effective management and protection become unattainable without a comprehensive understanding of your data, leaving your organization vulnerable to potential data breaches and steep compliance fines.
DPM Data Discovery solution offers automation through the entire process. It enables organizations to discover personal data from both structured and unstructured sources in any language and script, as well as uncover dark data and shadow processing.
As an AI-based solution, DPM Data Discovery can automatically classify all personal data across your systems, allowing you to build up-to-date records of processing activities, define different data categories, classify sensitive personal data, and enforce appropriate technical and organizational measures for each specific data set.
Although DPM Data Discovery is independent of privacy software in use, when combined with the information from the DPM platform, users can have informed insight into the actual data processing in the organization.
Continued Efforts and Streamlined Privacy with Data Privacy Manager
As a continuation of your privacy efforts, the Data Privacy Manager (DPM) will lean nicely on your SOPA findings and allow you to automate and streamline critical areas of improvement and close gaps in your privacy program.
DPM is an Enterprise-grade software made and hosted in the EU, automating all aspects of privacy governance and compliance, allowing you to centralize consents and preferences, automate compliance-related tasks, and minimize regulatory risks. When it comes to PDPL compliance, DPM covers all essential obligations.
How DPM Responds to PDPL Requirements
Data Privacy Manager (DPM) offers a comprehensive suite of modules and features designed to assist organizations in meeting the requirements of the Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL). It serves as one central hub for managing different aspects of PDPL compliance allowing companies to effectively handle Data Subject Request, automate DPIA and LIA assessments, streamline consent management, keep compliant Records of Processing Activities (ROPA), and more.
Navigating Compliance in 2024
By recognizing the importance of compliance, organizations can confidently navigate the complexities of PDPL. OSDP – WHAT IT IS, AND HOW IT CAN ELEVATE THE USER EXPERIENCE IN ACCESS CONTROL SYSTEMS
Developed by the Security Industry Association (SIA), the Open Supervised Device Protocol (OSDP) not only enables unparalleled user experiences but also delivers top-tier security measures, setting a new standard in the industry
n By:Gustavo Gassmann Nausheen.shamsher@proglobal.ae
The United Arab Emirates and its GCC neighbors are on an inexorable march towards economic sustainability. The successes we have seen (and will continue to see) are largely predicated on the ability of the private and public sectors to digitalize almost everything they do. They have also realized that digitalizing customer and employee experiences is a prerequisite for competitiveness. The horizon would be under a cloudless blue sky if not for one looming issue: cyber threats.
From Wiegand to OSDP
The problem is twofold. The mass migration to cloud services and other emerging tech has turned corporate IT into an unknowable sprawl where even digital boundaries are difficult to discern. Sec-
ond, threat actors are becoming more sophisticated, aided by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other advanced tools. These issues pervade IT and OT, and even extend to physical access control systems (PACS) such as card readers. And so, we look to security standards that fit our current dilemma.
The Open Supervised Device Protocol (OSDP), an interoperability standard developed by the Security Industry Association (SIA), allows the flexibility to provide great user experiences while providing the tightest security on offer today. The GCC is awash with technology vendors. Their customers of-
48 www.asmideast.com PRODUCTS & SYSTEMS
HID GLOBAL
ten must integrate several offerings to build the access control suite that fits their unique business model. The IEC-approved OSDP was designed to replace early protocols like Clock-andData and Wiegand. While 90% of inservice PACS still rely on Wiegand, the system is vulnerable because it is unencrypted and unidirectional.
OSDP offers advanced communication between access control devices and its bidirectional communication makes it highly versatile. It can be used for building access in corporate and residential settings. It can be applied to authentication in finance, healthcare, retail, and education. It is useful in data centers, transportation hubs, and critical infrastructure.
Enhancing Trust and Reliability
The protocol is an open standard that streamlines interoperability between devices from different vendors. This not
only promotes competition – good news for customers – but OSDP’s advanced encryption and tamperproof authentication methods enhance trust, no matter the use case. Bidirectional communication between readers and control panels means a richer data exchange and more reliability, both in confirming successful access events and in monitoring the performance of critical devices. In addition, OSDP’s greater range makes it ideal for more sophisticated accesscontrol systems, plus it can work with smart cards, allowing for yet more advanced security ecosystems.
OSDP comes in a range of profiles, each of which has its own configuration and functionality. If you are looking to just replace a Wiegand-based system and guard against common person-in-themiddle attacks, go for the Basic profile. If you want to add the ability to process encrypted messages, use the Secure profile. And if you are implementing a more advanced solution, Smart Card and Biometric profiles are available.
Once you are ready to take the OSDP plunge, you will need to ensure that your deployment strategy is secure and aligned with your specific device and system architecture. This is work for experts, so scour the market to find specialists you can trust. Your evaluation phase will mainly involve identifying devices that use legacy protocols as well as deciding which OSDP profiles you need for each. You need to maintain security; that means planning a phased approach for replacement that allows operational continuity throughout your organization. A limited pilot installation is advisable before settling on any devices or configurations.
As with all technology migrations, testing and training are critical for success, the former having the ability to identify necessary tweaks and the latter ensuring you reap the expected value from your investment. But get all of this right and OSDP has the potential to reinvent the user experience. n

That’s a 27% increase over the 2023 edition. On Wednesday, January 31, 2024, 51,617 visitors visited the fair, the highest number ever recorded in one day, beating the previous record by almost 22%. The total number of registrations reached 95,396 with 172,627 visits during the four days. Likewise, the number of visitors on the last day was 24,528, which is also a record for the exhibition since it became a four-day event. In addition to the record occupancy of hotels, bars, and entertainment facilities in the city, the exhibitors also reported an unprecedented number of visitors at the stands of the largest ISE exhibition space ever held. This fair hosted the largest number of exhibitors (1,408) in the largest exhibition space to date (82,000
square meters). A total of 634 accredited media representatives attended ISE 2024 – another record number.
Video Mapping, Holography, and Immersive Audio
The grandiosity of the fair was felt right at the entrance. The large transparent screen placed at the entrance is the first thing that thousands of visitors encounter at the fair. Although there was a large number of visitors, a group of people moved towards different halls without long waits at the entrance itself. As a trade fair, ISE gathers exhibitors from various industries who are distributed in halls related to their activities. What is new compared to previous editions is
Hall 1, which brought together exhibitors from the field of “Lighting and Staging zone”. Visitors had the opportunity to see equipment for lighting control and equipping stages and stages, video mapping, holography, and much more.
The companies’ large screens attracted the attention of passers-by, and LG’s moving LED screen over 10 meters high, which was adapted to digital content, stood out among them. Exhibitors from around the world presented their state-of-the-art solutions, from advanced display technologies to immersive audio systems, smart automation, and collaboration tools. The diverse range of products and services reflected the industry’s commitment to pushing the boundaries and improving user experiences.

EVENTS ISE 2024
AI Takes Center Stage
Unlike 2023, which was still a time of uncertainty, due to the recovery from the pandemic but also the unwillingness of decision-makers for greater engagement, 2024 turned out to be a year of intensification and a return to pre-pandemic trends. Many exhibitors at the fair noticed the unpreparedness and used the time to improve their services in the past period. After COVID-19, there is an increasing number of companies with education solutions, and rooms for online meetings, presenting countless possibilities to the visitors of the fair. Leaders in this segment are also leading companies in the world such as Google, Microsoft, Zoom, Yealink, and many others.
Michael Krogh, representative of the Vivolink brand, pointed out the trends in the area of meeting rooms, mentioning double screens as an innovation, where both those present at the meeting and the presentation itself are displayed at the same time. Vivolink, as a company, has developed a hub that precisely enables two phones at the same time.
The Canon company presented several different products in the field of VR systems, PTZ cameras, and multi-cam. Paul Atkinson, Product Specialist for Europe, drew attention to the manpower shortages faced in previous years. This is precisely why Canon has developed a system solution that enables the control
of multiple PTZ cameras through the XC protocol, as well as auto-tracking and auto-loop solutions.
ISE, as a fair of audio and visual technologies, is also an opportunity for companies that produce solutions for control rooms. Vladimir von Kendjelic Gorcery, representative of the Datapath company for Southeast Europe and the DACH region, emphasized the importance of being present at the fair because of the opportunity to present new solutions in the field of control rooms to their partners from Europe and the rest of the world in one place. Datapath focused its presentation on the Aetria solution, an integrated solution that enables the design, management, and operations of control rooms of various sizes. Technology in its development requires the integration of different products and complementary solutions to create a stable and safe ecosystem. This was precisely the reason why the company Zenitel, a specialist in the production of solutions for critical communications, appeared for the first time at the fair, not hiding its satisfaction with the visit. The predominant focus observed at CES 2024, renowned for presenting cuttingedge technological advancements, revolved around AI, underscoring its broad applicability across various sectors, especially in technology. Progress in AI semiconductor processing has facilitated swift on-device AI implementation, expanding beyond traditional gadgets like
EVENTS
smartphones, PCs, VR/AR gear, and televisions to encompass household appliances and automotive systems. This extensive assimilation of AI into interconnected experiences boosts its appeal significantly, particularly in the entertainment realms, where it offers widespread content access and tailored solutions.
Mike Blackman, CEO of Integrated Systems Events, gave his view of the fair: “In the illustrious 20-year journey of ISE, we have witnessed the transformative power of innovation and collaboration within our community. ISE 2024 not only reflects the cutting-edge technologies defining our industry but also serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of creativity and camaraderie. As we celebrate this milestone, alongside our co-owners AVIXA and CEDIA we look forward to continuing our commitment to being a global platform for industry professionals.”
Empowering Industry Professionals
The educational component of the event was also exceptional this time. Sessions, workshops, and keynote presentations, led by award-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and world-leading digital artists Jeroen van der Most and Sofia Crespo, provided valuable insights into emerging trends, market dynamics, and technological breakthroughs, while renowned speakers shared their expertise on topics such as cyber security and artificial intelligence in audio and video technologies, sustainable design and the future of remote collaboration. Visitors had the opportunity to participate in meaningful discussions and gain operational knowledge to stay one step ahead in a rapidly evolving industry. ISE’s 20th-anniversary celebration came as icing on the cake. Commemorative events, retrospective installations such as the ISE Time Tunnel and the Vintage Audio Museum, and recognition of industry pioneers once again highlighted the incredible journey that ISE has taken. This not only created a sense of nostalgia but also emphasized the resilience and adaptability of the industry in the face of technological evolution.
To conclude, the exceptional educational offerings and celebratory atmosphere of ISE 2024 underscored its status as a cornerstone event for industry professionals, setting the stage for continued innovation and collaboration as it returns to Barcelona from February 4 to 7, 2025. n
