PA/VA Systems

MAXIMIZING THE POTENTIAL OF YOUR PA/VA SYSTEM:

A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE In today’s modern security landscape, understanding PA/VA systems, their integration with security protocols, and their versatile applications is critical in ensuring effective safety measures and swift responses during emergencies n By: Mirza Bahić editorial@asmideast.com Are you certain that you are making the most of your Public Address/Voice Alarm (PA/VA) system? If this question has been bothering you, it’s time to explore unlocking its optimal functionality and maximizing its safety capabilities with insights from industry veterans. This question was the core topic of a webinar titled “Maximizing the Potential of Your PA/VA System: A Comprehensive Guide,” organized by a&s Adria and a&s Middle East magazines in which we had the privilege to host a panel of distinguished industry experts. They included Dragan Petrović, sales representative at ATEIS Europe; Andreas Kreuzer, sales engineer at TOA Electronics; Henning Matthies, director of business development of PA/ VA systems at Zenitel, and Marco Morimanda, export area manager and product specialist at PASO. Their contributions provided a panoramic view of the optimal utilization of PA/VA systems which should resonate with the audience that seeks to enhance their system efficacy.

The Role of Regular Maintenance and Flexibility-Focused Design First, all of our guests highlighted the paramount importance of regular maintenance for VA systems., emphasizing

Silence in fire alarm systems leads to only a 13% correct response rate, while clear voice instructions result in a staggering 75% of individuals responding correctly the critical role of routine checks, Dragan Petrović shared insights into how regular maintenance significantly influences people’s response during emergencies. He pointed out that regular testing of voice alarm systems at two-month intervals, coupled with annual or biannual comprehensive checks, significantly enhances people’s reactions and compliance during a fire alarm.

“If you test fire alarm systems and you also have a voice alarm system in the building, it is necessary to test it at least partially every two months and at least one or two times per year for the whole system. In my home country of Serbia, for example, the whole system is checked once or twice per year”, said Petrović. Petrović stressed the pivotal role of voice alarms, explaining that while silence in

fire alarm systems leads to only a 13% correct response rate, clear voice instructions result in a staggering 75% of individuals responding correctly. These findings underscore the indispensable role of well-maintained and periodically tested voice alarm systems in guiding individuals to safety, potentially saving numerous lives in emergencies. Andreas Kreuzer echoed the sentiments on quality and flexibility in PA/VA systems. “If we look up ‘quality’ in a dictionary, we find that it is a degree to which a set of inherent characteristics fulfills the requirements. So, we have requirements and expectations of a system, and the more these are fulfilled the better the quality. For audio systems in schools, airports, and churches, the requirements differ widely and they are different in each project. So, my main definition of quality in a PA/VA system is simple: it is flexibility”. Furthermore, Kreuzer emphasized the need for system redundancy and continuous monitoring as the crucial elements that ensure system functionality even in rare fire situations. He highlighted the importance of immediate detection and correction of any system failure within seconds. Speaking of an “optimal time” to replace or upgrade your PA/VA system, he emphasized that the need for an upgrade typically emerges when the current functionalities no longer align with the required standards or operational needs. Unlike certain components such as amplifiers that have identifiable moving parts, like fans, necessitating replacement every three to five years, many elements within voice evacuation systems don’t require such frequent maintenance. Finally, Kreuzer highlighted the absence of a universally applicable timeframe for entire system replacements. Instead, he emphasized the criticality of conducting routine inspections on crucial elements such as speakers and wiring at regular intervals. This periodic evaluation is crucial to ensure these components are functioning optimally and are reliable in emergency scenarios.

Going Beyond Crisis Scenarios Is Crucial Matthies returned the discussion to the ever-evolving landscape of public address, general alarm, and voice alarm systems, underscoring their integration to cater to diverse audio use cases across different

Navigating PA/VA Systems in Maritime Settings In response to the moderator’s inquiry regarding how Zenitel addresses the challenges and regulations specific to maritime environments concerning PA/VA systems, Marco Matthies emphasized the distinct regulatory landscape within the maritime sector, which differs significantly from onshore and European-wide standards. In maritime environments, there’s a focus on PA/GA (Public Address/General Alarm) systems rather than voice alarm systems. These systems are tailored to meet specific requirements for general alarms and specialized tones, often without live announcements or prerecorded messages.

market segments. He mentioned the fusion of PA capabilities into voice alarm systems as a significant advancement that enabled the dissemination of clear and informative instructions during emergencies. “You all know the PA/VA systems were once separated. Adding PA features to the VA system makes sense as it adds real-time information. This creates operational information delivered by security and employee announcements that help keep everyone informed. Loudspeakers can be used to issue prerecorded reminder messages and distribute background music. Control rooms can monitor behavior via security systems and use the PA to interact directly. Staff can trigger warning messages or issue live instructions to potential intruders. This includes anti-theft, vandalism in store, parking lots, and more”, stressed Matthies. Matthies highlighted a holistic approach to a security concept that integrates PA, intercom, IP loudspeakers, video surveillance, access control, and telecommunication systems within building management systems. “Seamless integration

with the complementary technology such as CCTV, the access control, and the other systems is essential”, added Matthies. His colleague Kreuzer points to another ace in the sleeves worn by security managers: combining innovative approaches with integrated technologies to enhance overall security within these complex environments. According to him, only forward-thinking designs can ensure a comprehensive and responsive approach to safeguarding occupants within high-rise structures, with a focus on timing. “Fortunately, buildings burn down very rarely. In 99% of cases, the voice alarm system is not really used, and only in the case the fire starts then they must operate to the best of their ability. There are two main ideas to realize this: through redundancy, which is provided in TOA Electronics’s systems, and through system monitoring. So, on one hand, any failure in the system must be detected within 100 seconds. It’s needed because if you notice that there is a failure in the system, you can repair the system before the house is burnt down to the ground”, explained Kreuzer.

FEATURE STORY If you use the internet, there is no way to have the internet itself become EN54-2 certified Cybersecurity is not a product-centric problem Next, all of the participants agreed that in today’s digital sphere, cybersecurity stands as an indispensable component across all domains, and this rings true for PA/VA systems. While acknowledging the significance of having robust cybersecurity measures embedded within all PA/VA products, Matthies underscored that cybersecurity is not merely a product-centric concern. Instead, it’s a comprehensive approach that necessitates attention beyond the procurement of a singular PA/VA system. “Cyber security is not only based on one product or one supplier. It’s the general scenario that an operator of a system should take into account. So, it’s not only buying a product from us and then thinking you are done with cybersecurity. No, that’s not it. It’s a more holistic approach you have to go for”, said Matthies. His colleagues confirmed that all manufacturers should approach the issue of cyber security from a broader point of view, aligning with best practices outlined in industry standards such as IEC 62443 and Center for Internet Security (CIS) benchmarking.

Ensuring Safety Only Through Rigorous Compliance Speaking of standards, Morimanda emphasized the necessity of stringent external regulations to ensure system quality and performance under dire circumstances. “External regulation is vital for ensuring the quality in what could literally be a matter of life or death. For this reason, socalled self-certification or sole reliance on a manufacturer’s compliance statements is strictly prohibited. One institute tested the reactions among the people when they heard the conventional siren and the time when the prerecorded message was started. The results have shown that the voice alarm has the best performance”, said Morimanda.

24

www.asmideast.com

So-called self-certification or sole reliance on a manufacturer’s compliance statements is strictly prohibited According to him, standards like ISO 7240-19 and EN54-16 are essential for global compliance and adherence in PA/ VA system design and production. He further stressed the significance of these standards, especially regarding fire detection devices, audio speakers, and secondary power supplies that can ensure strict compliance to guarantee system reliability and performance. Regarding integration challenges, Andreas Kreuzer stressed the paramount importance of acknowledging the securityoriented nature of PA/VA systems. He pointed out that while their voice alarm and voice application systems adhere to EN54-2 compatibility standards, integrating these systems into larger networks, especially across multiple locations or facilities within a factory, necessitates robust communication. “Communication is not security-related, and it may break down for sure. If you use the internet, there is no way to have the internet itself become EN54-2 certified, at least to my knowledge. Therefore, you have to guarantee absolute security and 100 percent reliability at a local level”, said Kreuzer.

He reiterated the critical need for local assurance of absolute security and unswerving reliability, especially in larger projects where diverse aspects of their environments must be meticulously considered. Marco Morimanda delved deeper into the significance of conforming to the EN54 standard, shedding light on the intricate process behind obtaining and maintaining certifications, and how they translate into heightened safety measures within public address and voice alarm systems. According to him, the EN54 standard is not merely a label - it stands as a testament to the rigorous evaluation conducted by external certification bodies. He pointed to the nuanced nature of the EN54 standard, delineating between PD CEN/TS 54, which addresses product certification, and ISO 724019, which serves as a comprehensive guideline for system standards. For instance, the standard mandates the swift delivery of prerecorded messages within a three-second window from activation to initiate clear and concise evacuation instructions available in multiple languages.

Despite the development of robust standards at regional and international levels, local regulations in various countries continue to pose challenges

FEATURE STORY Any failure in the system must be detected within 100 seconds

Innovations in High-Rise PA/VA System Design Security system design in high-rise buildings stands as a critical challenge within the realm of architecture and safety infrastructure. Andreas Kreuzer articulated an innovative approach to tackling the complexities of evacuation procedures within tall structures. Emphasizing the potential impracticality of traditional evacuation methods if an entire building attempts to evacuate at once, Kreuzer introduced a phased evacuation strategy. The proposed method involves orchestrating evacuations “face by face,” initiating the evacuation from the floor where the fire has been detected, and potentially from the floor above it. This allows for a more organized evacuation without congestion in staircases. However, to implement this approach effectively, system designs must possess adaptability to handle an array of fire scenarios, as pinpointing the exact origin of a fire is often unpredictable. His colleague Marco Morimanda elaborated on the importance of the clarity and comprehensibility of audio messages during emergencies play a pivotal role in effective evacuation without inciting panic.

His colleague Matthies pointed out persisting challenges stemming from regional disparities in regulations within the EU and across the globe. Despite the development of robust standards at regional and international levels, local regulations in various countries continue to pose challenges. These regional differences create complexities for manufacturers, system integrators, and stakeholders, requiring them to navigate varying compliance requirements across different markets. Instead of this, Matthies advocates for

a more unified, harmonized regulatory framework across the EU and the rest of the world, encompassing not only product standards but also application standards. Additionally, his emphasis on incorporating IP-related requirements within security regulations highlights the need for comprehensive guidelines that align with evolving technological advancements. His colleague Kreuzer echoes the sentiment but with more skepticism. “I see a trend that many countries go their own ways and say; we do it differ-

The standard mandates the swift delivery of prerecorded messages within a three-second window from activation to initiate clear and concise evacuation instructions available in multiple languages

ently. And I’m a bit skeptical since it would make life for everybody much easier if there is one worldwide standard. We have a general idea - some people are in a house that is burning and they have to get out. So, the problem is identical worldwide. Why can’t the solution be identical?”, asked Kreuzer. Petrović offered insights into the specific regulatory landscape in Serbia, where voice alarm systems are not mandatory in most buildings. He acknowledged the challenges associated with advocating for their widespread adoption due to these regulatory constraints. “I see the evolution in changing the attitude of clients, cooperators, system integrators or investors that need to be shown that this it is primarily good to have a voice alarm in the building, and not just merely mandatory”, said Petrović. Finally, Petrović reiterated the oft-forgotten primary objective of PA/VA systems: saving lives and property. “We have to listen to the investor, the company, and the project designers to help them integrate the system in a way to save lives because our systems are mainly used for that purpose. So, if we were asked to help them, we have to make a solution that saves lives first, and then everything comes later”, concluded Petrović.

Advancing the Frontier And with that, the session drew to a close. Before the participants signed off, they emphasized a crucial aspect of PA/ VA systems as the industry progresses: in today’s landscape marked by technological advancements, diverse protocols, and safety standards, the shared best practices relevant to PA/VA systems serve as a compass for both users and experts. These insights enable a smoother navigation of this intricate landscape, striking a delicate balance between technological evolution, regulatory alignment, and the primary goal of PA/VA systems—ushering in a more integrated and safer future. n

in the demand for fire protection systems across all verticals in this region. But also, trade shows – such as Intersec - conferences, and exhibitions focused on fire safety also contribute to raising further awareness about the latest technologies and solutions available in the market. Now, every country has its own regulations and dynamics in the region. For our penetration into the market, we strongly believe in localization. For this purpose, we establish strong local partnerships with system integrators and distributors. Our team in the region supports our local SIs in many ways such as conducting commercial trainings and organizing events to spread the advantages of Bosch Fire Alarm solutions. a&s Middle East: Could you share insights into the innovations BOSCH is planning to introduce and currently working on? Góra: Our goal is to fulfill the needs of stakeholders in our industry. This is, to ensure real reliable detection for safety managers, to support the maintenance of the installed systems by system integrators, or to contribute to the smooth planning of a fire alarm system by designers. In the realm of protection and business continuity, the demand for reliable fire detection is paramount. For this, we incorporate the most advanced technology in

our solutions. Let me illustrate this with two examples. First, we need to embrace multi-sensor technology. Second, we follow up on this by exploring video-based fire detection with AI. Trained algorithms swiftly identify flames and smoke at their source, extending possible applications even to outdoor settings. Addressing the need for streamlined maintenance, our Remote Services transform a fire alarm system into a state-of-the-art IoT solution. This enables remote access to our installed systems for programming, maintenance, and live monitoring of e.g. pollution level of fire detectors and alarm and trouble transmissions to smart devices. buildings, from hospitals to airports. Now, our systems and products bring unique capabilities to overcome specific challenges faced by different industries. Let me share a few examples. In case of an alarm in hospitals, many patients require assistance for descending stairwells while elevators are out of use. The Bosch Smart Safety Link enables the integration of voice alarms with fire detectors and assists safety managers with emergency evacuations allowing for a highly effective gradual evacuation approach. Unplanned downtime in manufacturing is extremely cost-intensive. Electrical machinery and electronic devices on industrial plants create electromagnetic disturbance values which risk disruption to production and other operations. The eSmog feature of AVENAR 4000 fire detectors is electromagnetic-compatible. The detector is therefore informed of disturbance values from sources such as equipment, which greatly reduces the risk of false alarms and subsequent downtime and evacuations. In hotels, museums or flagship office buildings aesthetics play a major role. Our flat fire detectors are ultra-slim with a smooth surface, thereby being unintrusive and hardly visible on the ceiling. We even offer a choice of 16 RAL colors to complement interiors. And a last example today. Detecting fires in half-open spaces is difficult due to wind and weather effects. Our AI video-based fire detection solution, AVIOTEC, provides outdoor fire detection near buildings where virtually no other detection technology is available. It enables the detection of smoke and flames even in windy conditions. This is ideal for outside storage areas, hangars at airports, or solar plants. a&s Middle East: The Middle East region is a mixed market where UL as well as EN solutions co-exist. Bosch has a strong EN54 portfolio. Do you have any plans to introduce a UL range of products in the short term?

The demand for reliable fire detection is paramount. For this, we incorporate the most advanced technology in our solutions

Góra: Our goal is to remain a global player in the EN54 fire product business. Now, although sometimes assumed, it is by no means required that testing and listing of a project tender shall be based on an American product standard. In fact, NFPA 72 leaves this open by purpose, allowing for solutions that provide an equivalent or even better safety level. This means, provided that planning and installation-specific requirements are met, products certified in accordance with the EN 54 series like those with VdS-Approval can be used in installations according to NFPA 72. So yes, the Bosch portfolio can be installed in an NFPA-specified project.

a&s Middle East: Could you provide a list of countries or regions where the Building Technology division will continue its operations after the realignment? Góra: As mentioned earlier, our international fire detection business will continue with the same commitments and ambitions in all countries where we are present today. Together with our partners, our goal is to remain a top player in the fire product business. As part of the Bosch Group, our customers can further rely on our business ethics and highest quality standards. The Bosch brand is and remains synonymous with trust, reliability, and innovation. n

features that hold importance in the intricate product selection process.

This question serves as the cornerstone of a comprehensive survey conducted by asmag.com in collaboration with Hikvision. The survey, aptly named “Sustainability and the Security Industry,” sets out to unravel the prevailing sentiments within the market concerning environmentally conscious practices. Drawing insights from an extensive pool of respondents, the research conducted by asmag.com delves into the hearts and minds of physical security professionals regarding the relationship between green and sustainable technologies and the security industry. Invitations to participate in the survey were disseminated far and wide, via social media channels, the asmag.com website, and targeted email outreach. The participants, a diverse cross-section of the industry, were meticulously segmented, revealing a tapestry of perspectives. The scope of the survey is far-reaching, endeavoring to uncover the level of market awareness regarding green sustainability practices and technology. It delves into the prevailing trends in green technology across the industry and how these trends shape the decision-making process of channel players. The survey also examines the underlying significance of green technology and practices when it comes to purchasing decisions, as well as the key factors and

Exploring Key Aspects of Sustainability

The survey extends its reach to investigate potential disparities in market sentiment across regions, classifying respondents into two broad categories: the Western hemisphere (US, Europe, and the Middle East) and the Asian sphere (Asia and Oceania). The findings offer a glimpse into the minds of Western and Asian channel players, revealing a fundamental understanding of sustainability principles. However, the survey hints at a need for greater education and information dissemination. While there is fervent interest in green practices and technology, practical considerations such as device features, durability, brand reputation, and budgetary constraints loom large in the realm of purchasing decisions. The message is clear: manufacturers and brands must not only underscore the sustainability aspect of their products but also effectively convey the practical features and realworld applications that resonate with users. In doing so, they can bridge the gap between intent and action, ensuring that the security industry moves forward in harmony with the ever-evolving landscape of sustainable practices.

Opportunities lie in the growing need for market education The majority of Western and Asian security channel players are familiar with green and sustainability principles on a basic level. However, the survey shows the need and the opportunity for more market education and information. According to survey results, the majority of respondents (88%) from both regions stated familiarity with the topic, indicating a strong awareness of the importance of this field in the security industry. This familiarity can be attributed to the growing global emphasis on sustainability and environmental responsibility in recent years. The past few years have seen security device manufacturers increasingly incorporating sustainability principles and energy efficiency into their products, with a focus on reducing the environmental footprint of manufacturing processes and supply chains. There is, however, a difference in the level of understanding and implementation. 61% of our Western group indicated they understood or have implemented green practices in their businesses, compared to 55% of Asian respondents. On the other hand, 39% of Western and 45% of Asian respondents indicated some to no familiarity. This shows a significant number of market players who may be in the early stages of adopting sustainability measures or may be facing challenges in their implementation.

IN FOCUS

High interest in purchasing energy-saving products Overall, the majority of respondents ranked green initiatives of high importance and displayed great interest in purchasing energy-saving products for their businesses. In terms of green and low carbon initiatives, 47% overall said it was very important, while 18% said it was somewhat important. Interestingly enough, 30% (the next largest group) indicated that it was fairly unimportant. This could perhaps be attributed to several factors. One is cost considerations – upfront investments in technology and processes may deter (smaller) businesses as these initiatives may not show immediate financial returns. Secondly, there are business objectives to consider – sustainability initiatives would take a backseat to more pressing concerns such as budgets or operational challenges. When asked whether it was important for them to buy energy-saving/low-power consumption products to contribute to greener and low-carbon practices, a high number of respondents answered in the affirmative: 50% of Asian respondents said that this feature was very important versus 44% of Western respondents. Overall, only 3-4% said that it was not important to them. This finding isn’t very surprising. Energysaving products are readily available and easily adopted. The benefits are more tangible and immediate in the form of reduced electricity bills. The findings in this section tie in with the results from the question which highlighted the need and opportunity for manufacturers/brands and local government to inform the market players about the long-term benefits of adopting green technology in terms of energy efficiency, lower operating costs and cost of ownership as well as future-proofing their security solutions.

Rising Demand for TRASSIR AI-Based Modules The modern CCTV surveillance industry faces numerous security challenges, including safeguarding property from tampering, ensuring visitor and staff safety, combating theft, preventing staff fraud, and handling rising incidents of theft. These challenges have spurred crucial business objectives, such as collecting customer data, conducting data analysis, visualization, transaction reporting, and customer traffic analysis. TRASSIR presents some specific solutions for the industry that are becoming

increasingly popular in this region. There is a growing demand for the following TRASSIR modules based on AI. The shelf detector module analyzes shelf capacity and is used to provide timely reports about empty shelves. In the event of voids exceeding the specified value, the module sends notifications and reports to store employees. These reports allow the retail network’s administration to determine/predict the level of demand for certain groups of goods and track the performance of employees responsible for filling the shelves. ActivePOS is a smart module that enables synchronizing POS events with the video

PRODUCTS & SYSTEMS

stream. POS events are sent to ActivePOS and go through a checklist based on given parameters. In case of violation, an incident is generated (a violation alert with a short video) and will be displayed for the operator to review. The module also independently monitors possible cashier violations and, if detected, immediately alerts the operator. Heat Map provides thermal analysis of video images. In dynamic mode any moving object on the screen is highlighted with a warm tail area: the more activity is recorded, the more intense the color. Static mode accumulates activity map, highlighting «cold» and «hot» areas on video. Face Recognition module for theft prevention combines FaceSDK for comparing faces and Face Search to look for faces in the database. Human Face Detection allows us to find and highlight a face in the camera image. Face detection is possible from any angle, including profiles, and you can even compare identified faces with photos in the database and determine the degree of match. This module also allows one to recognize certain attributes of a person’s appearance: hair color, glasses, headwear, etc., and search by these parameters.

Real-World Implementations Thieves’ face databases at TRASSIR can include thousands of faces. The technology works as follows: if a thief has stolen goods from one store, his face is added to the database, and if he enters another store with a shared database, the security manager gets an alert, so TRASSIR can prevent theft before it happens, thus staying proactive rather than just providing theft videos after the fact. Additionally, TRASSIR’s Face Recognition module serves purposes beyond security, including marketing analytics, tracking the percentage of repeat purchases and unique visitors at outlets, and creating a base with demographic segmentation.

TRASSIR’s Contributions in the Middle East Privacy of customers is also an important issue and TRASSIR makes sure that its system complies with the laws of the countries where the privacy of customers is a concern. One of the major examples of TRASSIR Neuroanalytical module implementation in Saudi Arabia is the Islamic University of Madinah in the Islamic holy city of Medina. The company implemented this project with

its partner in Saudi Arabia, Asaqefah Business Development Company. The main task was to upgrade and replace the security system and improve overall security at the University. The TRASSIR CCTV system is now being used to monitor the activities of students, staff, and visitors, and it will help ensure that everyone follows the rules and regulations in the future. TRASSIR also delivered a solution that enabled the Kuwait National Guard Training Centre in Kuwait to modernize security. The main task of this independent military institution was to provide the safety of the training center’s property and trainees against thefts, fires, and vandalism. It was also intended to protect the adjacent territory against terrorism, fights, hooliganism, distribution of drugs, alcohol, etc. TRASSIR also helped Bin Nabhan Mosque in Kuwait to increase the safety of all visitors, staff, and worshippers at the mosque

and protect this architectural monument and pilgrimage for believers from terrorism, vandalism, and anti-social behavior. With the use of TRASSIR NeuroStation and Neuro Detectors, the full monitoring of the territory and perimeter of the mosque has been made possible now, including parking areas, adjacent areas near the walls and neighboring streets, and special monitoring of restricted areas and sacred sites. The customer is fully satisfied with the solution, helping the further expansion of TRASSIR CCTV systems in Kuwait. Another large-scale upgrade has been implemented at SAL (Saudi Logistics Services) - the leading air cargo operator in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The company serves all Saudi Arabian airports and handles 99% of the country’s incoming and outgoing air cargo. Thanks to the successful replacement of the previous VMS with TRASSIR, the client now has a customizable system with a wide range of analytical tools which allows them to minimize their financial losses while reducing payroll and quickly reacting to unauthorized territory access. The customers were satisfied with these easy-to-use and cost-efficient solutions, and TRASSIR was proud to be part of these projects that helped to promote safety in the MEA region. TRASSIR has an accomplished history of providing safety solutions throughout the MEA region, including public institutions, festivals, fast food chains, educational centers, public restaurants, and others. Going forward, TRASSIR aims to use the knowledge gained from finished projects to contribute to greater security in the Middle East, which can be further extended to areas all around the globe, Insha’Allah. This has been a remarkable experience, as it allows us to unlock the possibilities for green growth through innovation. GRUNDIG

GRUNDIG SECURITY’S COMPREHENSIVE AI SOLUTIONS FOR DEMANDING PROJECTS Grundig’s products are distributed from Düsseldorf, Germany, encompassing a broad range of IP cameras, thermal cameras, NVRs, infrastructure, and the multifunctional AI-powered VMS, C-Werk n Source: Grundig editorial@asmideast.com Grundig, one of the most recognized German brands for electronic consumer goods, was among the first brands in Germany to offer CCTV applications. Today Grundig Security´s primary customers are IT and security integrators. Since the first days of CCTV, there have been groundbreaking changes, and currently, we are in the era of integrated solutions and AI analysis. Thanks to the continuous improvement of processors in IP cameras, modern devices can now execute numerous embedded AI analytic functions directly on the edge. This capability results in significant savings in hardware resources on the server side. However, the full potential of Edge AI can only be realized when hardware and software are maximally compatible.

Enhanced capabilities through the distribution of computing power across multiple devices AI algorithms such as the classification of detected objects, virtual tripwire, or

the collection of metadata are becoming increasingly commonplace and are intended to be available more frequently for all video streams within a project. Especially in integrated projects with numerous cameras, planning and calculating server infrastructure can often reach its limits when the complete analysis needs to occur in the backend. The consequence is frequently a compromise, leading to the omission of analysis for many cameras. The approach of running algorithms on cameras is not new, but there is often a lack of seam-

less integration between the VMS and hardware. The VMS must be capable of understanding the collected information from the cameras and processing it further when needed. Grundig Security has precisely followed this approach with its new AI-powered Smart Line. The cameras in this series can independently perform analyses such as Virtual Tripwire Detection, Intrusion Detection, and People-Vehicle Detection. Each event, triggering a rule, can be transmitted to the Grundig VMS C-Werk. This allows, for example, recording upon the detection of humans for hundreds or thousands of cameras without the excessive use of CPU and GPU resources.

Forensic Search feature through Object Tracker functionality The forensic search function is one of the key features of the C-Werk VMS. In this application, security users can search the archive using rules and search filters for specific events. This means that rules can be applied retroactively in a recording at any point in the scene. For instance, if

all individuals passing through a specific part of the scene should be displayed, a virtual tripwire can be drawn to that location. The system then quickly analyzes all motion data in the archive and displays the results.

Unique overview of detected objects in the playback The time-lapse function can be used to run a query that simultaneously displays multiple objects that have moved in a scene within a selected time frame. This allows the operator to quickly gain an overview when searching for suspicious individuals or other objects, ideally reaching the desired situation within a second. These types of forensic archive searches are realized through the collection of

metadata. This means that all pixel data from moving objects is gathered by video analysis and stored in the archive. When performing the forensic search, the system accesses and evaluates this data accordingly. In the future, the new Grundig Smart Line will be able to autonomously collect this metadata and transmit it to C-Werk, enabling Forensic Search for all channels.

Enhanced connection and data processing through C-Werk Cloud Grundig Security has introduced a significant feature expansion for its CWerk Cloud. The new Smart Line can be seamlessly added to the cloud via Plug and Play. Communication takes place through secure encryption directly be-

tween hardware and the cloud. This particularly benefits operators with multiple locations, such as retail chains, offering them the opportunity for cross-site management of their video systems. Another advantage is that collected metadata can be processed directly in the cloud and displayed in customized reports. This opens new possibilities for marketers who, for example, can generate a comparative overview of all visitors for all their branches. “By shifting algorithms from the backend to the frontend, we, in collaboration with our partners, have achieved significant savings in server infrastructure. Additionally, this approach frees up resources that can be utilized for additional specialized backend algorithms, such as our optical smoke detection,” says Yalcin Demirak, sales director. n
