➤ How do you get along with Georgio Maillos? - It is a father-son relation, I could say. I bought the ticket, going there next week. Kallia will have a game. You know her, I coach her, too. He called me there, so I can be in the corner – he doesn’t want to. Slowly but surely, Georgio wants to let me be her coach, as he intends to retire, to take a rest for a while.
➤ Ați stat în Grecia intre 1992 și 1999. N-a fost o perioadă ușoară, ați muncit în construcții... Povestiți‑ne despre experiența dumneavoastră din acea perioadă și despre relația cu fondatorul kickboxingului grecesc, Giorgio Maillos. - Într-adevăr a fost o perioadă grea. Vă dați seama, am ajuns în străinătate, nu știam să vorbesc, nu știam nimic. Am lucrat într-adevăr de toate, de la spălat farfurii prima dată, la construcții, la orice puteam atât cât să am bani să-mi plătesc chiria, să mă întrețin și să pot să mă antrenez. Dar am avut un vis, am crezut în visul meu. Poate la acea vreme eram puțin nebun, dar am crezut că o să reușesc să fac și văd că Dumnezeu m-a îndrumat bine și m-a ajutat să-mi împlinesc visul meu și al altor sportivi.
➤ You are coaching Kallia Kourouni, a world champion in 2012 and a student of Mallios. How is the training going and what are your expectations? - Kallia, just like our boys here, fall into the category of phenomena. She has an extraordinary force and a patience of steel. She is a girl not quite living her girl life. She only lives for kickboxing. She fights with the men, but I never heard her complaining. She sometimes cries. We went to the training camp...she was crying saying that she could not run anymore...crying and running, crying and running more.
➤ Și relația cu Georgio Maillos? - Este relația tată-fiu aș putea spune. Mi-am luat bilet, trebuie să merg în Grecia săptămâna viitoare, când are meci Kallia. O cunoașteți, are meci acolo și o antrenez și eu pe ea. M-a chemat să vin să stau eu la colț, că el nu vrea. Vrea încet-încet să mi-o dea mie și el să se retragă, să stea un pic să se odihnească. ➤ O antrenați și pe Kallia Kourouni, campioană mondială în 2012 și elevă a lui Mallios. Cum decurg antrenamentele și ce așteptări aveți? - Kallia, ca și băieții de la noi, se încadrează la fenomene. Are o forță extraordinară și o răbdare de fier. Este o fată care nu își trăiește viața de fată. Ea trăiește doar pentru kickboxing. Luptă cu bărbații, nu am auzit-o niciodată să se vaite, să spună că o doare, să plângă. Ba uneori mai plânge. Acum a fost în cantonament... plângea că nu mai putea să alerge, dar plângea și alerga, plângea și alerga în continuare. ➤ Și ce așteptări aveți de la ea? - Eu cred că dacă este să se facă divizie la fete, la 60 de kilograme, ea va fi prima campioană mondială.

➤ Cum vedeți viitorul K1 în România? Ce ați dori să se schimbe? - Noi românii suntem o nație foarte războinică. Poate nu am realizat. Eu mereu am spus că dacă merg și la trei blocuri, garantat aleg doi copii de acolo pe care-i fac campioni. E mai greu să ajungă supercampioni. Eu așa spun campioni ajung repede mulți, supercampioni mai puțini. Mai ales pentru profesioniști acuma, se cer mult mai multe. Trebuie să ai și față, să știi și să vorbești, să fii puțin mai complet. Ori ești în extrema celaltă, un urs, un ursuleț mai prostuț și râde lumea de tine, ori ești în partea asta, a fotomodelelor - un luptător impecabil, trebuie să ai și vocabular, să arăți și bine. Dar suntem bine noi ca români.
➤ You lived in Greece between 1992 and 1999. It was not an easy time, you worked in the construction business. Walk us through your experience there and about your relation with Giorgio Maillos, the founder of the Greek kickboxing. - It was, indeed, a hard time. You can realize, I went abroad, was not speaking the language, did not know anything. I did a lot of jobs, from doing the dishes to constructions, anything to help me pay my rent, to buy food and train myself. But I had a dream, I belived in my dream. I was maybe a little crazy back then, but I really followed my credo. Now, I see that God put me on the right path, helped my dream come true and also other sportsmen’s.
➤ How do you see the K1 in Romania, in the future? What would you like to see changed? - We, the Romanians, are a nation of fighters. Just that we have not yet realized. I always said – if I go to only three buildings, I can guarantee you I can pick two kids to make them champions. It is harder though to be super-champions. This is what I think – many champions, but less super ones. Especially now, demands are high for for the performance sports people. You have to be nice looking, to know how to communicate, to be more complex. You could be either like a bear, a little bit silly and people laugh at you or a photo model – an impeccable fighter, coherent in what you’re saying, to look good. Romanians are ok from this perspective.
