20 YEARS
CASCO BAY STUDY CLUB

2023-2024

Welcome to the Casco Bay Study Club Academic Year 2023/24 and our 20th anniversary year We are extremely grateful for all of you who have joined us on this incredible journey over the years

Kicking off the study club year, we are fortunate to have Dennis Tarnow, a true icon of dentistry, joining us again Dennis will covers two critical topics The first, "Immediate Extraction Socket Management In the Esthetic Zone and Molars", explores the potential risks and benefits of immediate implant placements. The evidence-based session addresses key factors such as healing types, recession minimization, crown contouring, and the use of membranes and graft materials The second presentation, "Interdisciplinary Management of Aesthetic Problem Cases" delves into the decision-making process for complex cases Tarnow tackles concerns such as tooth preservation, implant timing, orthodontic considerations, pink ceramic or ridge augmentation, case splinting, provisionalization, and loading approaches
In the Full Arch Critical Teams Success (FACTS) course, Dr. Bakuri emphasizes the need to meet the growing demand for full-arch dental implant treatment To achieve success in this area, a specific plan is crucial for introducing the treatment to patients and referring dentists The course covers mapping the patient's experience to improve their journey through the treatment process, implementing consistent processes for both patients and referring doctors, and utilizing non-traditional referral techniques like Direct to Customer Marketing (DTCM) to attract full-arch cases Dr Bakuri's extensive experience and expertise in this field make him an excellent instructor for this course, which aims to enhance the success of full-arch implant treatments
The bi-annual New England Regional Seattle Study Club Meeting will focus on communication, treatment planning execution, and complication management in interdisciplinary dentistry With sessions dedicated to managing the natural dentition and dental implants, attendees can expect to gain valuable knowledge and insights. This event offers a platform for networking, exchanging experiences, and elevating dental practices Don't miss the opportunity to enhance your expertise at the New England Regional Seattle Study Club Meeting with Dr. Ricardo Mitrani and Dr. Gregg Kinzer.
Throughout the year, we have a range of additional speakers and topics to explore, including sessions with Craig Spodak, David Lee Hill Jr., Bobbi Stanley, Vinay Bhide, Wael Att, Dinesh Sinha, Darria Long, Parag Kachalia, and Wael Garine, These sessions will cover various aspects of dentistry, including dentofacial rehabilitation, stress management, leveraging digital technologies, high-intensity learning, and complication management
Whether you are a seasoned practitioner or at the beginning stages of private practice, the Casco Bay Study Club welcomes you to be a part of our vibrant community We are committed to providing a stimulating and inclusive environment that fosters growth, innovation, and excellence in dental practice.

A final note (in case you haven’t noticed): So far the entire introduction to the 20th CBSC curriculum was completely generated by ChatGPT As digital technology and AI advances with lightning speed into our daily and professional lives, it becomes essential for us to acquire the skills to implement these incredible advances to our benefit and “to stay the master of our craft and not to become the servant” I trust the Casco Bay Study Club and the Curriculum 2023/24 will offers valuable guidance
We look forward to seeing you all back in September

Our Philosophy on Continuing Education

The Casco Bay Study Club is affiliated with the Seattle Study Club network, an international collaboration of dentists dedicated to promoting excellence in comprehensive dentistry. The Casco Bay Study Club (CBSC) is a group of Maine dentists who enjoy sharing ideas, discussing treatment concepts and learning from leading experts. We share the same philosophy on continuing education:
The most successful outcomes result from total case management, an understanding of the overall picture and how each treatment or technique functions within it.
Our highest levels of comprehension are achieved as a direct result of participation and interaction rather than observation.
Learning from and with one's peers in a structured, supportive environment is the best way to reach one's highest potential in the field of dentistry.

Immediate Extraction Socket Management In the Esthetic Zone and Molars. What we know, what we think we know, and what we don't know about
Immediate placements of implants into extraction sockets is an exciting treatment alterniative for our patients. However, there are many potential short and particularly long term risks which the practitioner must be fully aware of. This presentation will focus on the potential problems and benefits both clinically and biologically when the choice of immediate socket placement is made for single and multiple sites. This will be an evidence based presentation that will be objective about the best and simplest way to treat these type of cases.
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
Identify what type of healing takes place against the implant in immediate socket placement
Know how to minimize recession with immediate provisionalization
Know the proper crown contour for immediate provisionalization
Interdisciplinary Management of Aesthetic Problem Cases
The treatment planning of complex cases requires the highest level of knowledge and skill of the treating team. It is an orchestration of procedures including proper sequencing and timing that makes the difference. An envisionment of the final case before starting is required to know where the goal of treatment will be directed. This, in conjunction with the patients needs and clinical situation comprise the decision-making process for what is the best treatment for the patient.
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
Which teeth to save or extract?
Should implants be placed immediately or in a delayed protocol? Should multiple implants be placed in the aesthetic zone?

Full Arch Critical Team Success (FACTS)
Full-arch dental implant treatment has become a viable treatment option for a significant percentage of our dental patients. Despite the growing demand for this treatment, dental clinicians all over the country are not performing this treatment at a frequency that meets the population’s demand

Successfully meeting the demand for full-arch implant treatment requires a strong and specific plan to introduce this treatment option to both the patients and to the referring dentists. Executing this treatment with confidence and ease is essential on both the surgical end as well as the restorative end. When patients have a positive experience and a positive outcome, they will spread the word of their life-changing experience Referring doctors will look forward to their next exciting case with you!

Seeking Interdisciplinary Excellence
Interdisciplinary dentistry is proving to be the most effective means by which we can deliver the highest level of service to our patients Whether addressing specific cosmetic concerns or providing advanced rehabilitation, through coordinated efforts at the specialist level, we can raise our game and provide a better end result. This seminar will communicate to orthodontists, periodontists, prosthodontists, oral surgeons and all dentists through the demonstration of carefully documented clinical cases and specific literature citing. Areas in which the various specialists can work in concert to better serve our patients will be illustrated Examples, such as the use of forced eruption, coordination of gingival margins, implant placement and utilization in tooth movement will be examined.
Orthodontic interactions with implant dentistry will be examined in detail. Orthodontic implant site development, both from a tissue modification standpoint and establishing correct special relations, will be illustrated
Further, the use of implants as orthodontic anchorage will be illustrated in depth, both from direct and indirect strategies From that bod of knowledge, future directions for miniscrew usage will be shown, including aligner therapy and advancement in that arena.

NELSON REGO + BOBBY WILLIAMS

Collaborative Debate: Digital vs Analog Laboratory Workflows. Is Analog Still Superior?
When people spoke about digital dentistry a decade ago, the conversation focused on single unit restorations being fabricated in the office or just an intraoral scan being taken instead of a physical impression. Today, clinicians are pushing the envelope, completing edentulous cases utilizing fully digital workflows. Has dentistry really come this far over the last few years and is analog fading away? On the other hand, is digital dentistry just a series of shortcuts and does true precision still reside in the analog world?
Nelson Rego and Bobby Williams both highly trained and accomplished laboratory owners, will be asked to defend each of these workflows from the perspective of the laboratory, allowing attendees to realize the benefits of each approach and gain an understanding of which approach may be more predictable. Furthermore, they will provide insight that truly makes a difference with respect to outcomes versus technological advances simply being a new toy.
Upon completion of this course, attendees should be able to:
Identify appropriate design applications for full mouth or localized area cases

Recognize how to merge digital and analog workflows useful to laboratories to plan and design cases

VINAY BHIDE

Cleaning Up Your Own Mess: A Tale of Redemption
In this rescue mission, Dr Vinay Bhide is faced with the task of reconstructing the anterior maxilla after implants have failed due to periimplantitis. Sounds straightforward doesn't it? It is, until it isn't. Surgical reconstruction of a deficient ridge in preparation for dental implant therapy has been shown to be a successful and predictable modality of treatment. This workshop will showcase a 47-year-old patient who had implants placed in the anterior maxilla and restored with a fixed bridge and subsequently developed peri-implantitis after more than five years in function The implant were lost to the disease process leaving Dr Bhide the formidable task of reconstructing the deficient, residual ridge for implant therapy...again! While the reconstructive surgery went well, the postoperative healing events that ensued did not. Faced with an already compromised site which was now healing poorly:

How could the initial peri-implantitis and bone loss have been prevented in the first place?
What would Dr Bhide have to do to change the course of treatment so this case could be restored successfully

WAEL ATT

Contemporary Workflows in Dentofacial Rehabilitation
The shift towards implementing digitally-driven 3D engineering tools in reconstructive dentistry is evident Digital technologies aim to improve the quality and capabilities of dental examination, diagnosis, and treatment, as compared to conventional methods. However it remains uncertain whether these digital tools can facilitate improved accuracy in data acquisition and assessment, superior efficacy in treatment planning, and faster manufacturing processes This course provides an overview of 3D engineering in comprehensive dentofacial rehabilitation on teeth and implants and discusses the possibilities and advantages of both conventional and digital approaches. Also, contemporary workflows will be demonstrated through multiple case presentations.
Upon completion of this course, attendees should be able to:
To identify the different components of the digital workflow in reconstructive dentistry
To understand how the combination of different digital technologies can benefit the overall treatment
