milestone event in digital dentistry: the beta launch of the DSD App by Christian Coachman at the NERSSC in 2017. We have come a long way since then. Digital dentistry is the future! Digital dentistry can take a good dentist to the next level. Digital dentistry creates a lot of noise, let’s see what signals develop in this field over the next year and in the meantime we go “Back to the Basics”.
Both our keynote speakers can look at a clinical career of over half a century each! We are delighted to welcome back Urs Belser, former President of the University of Geneva and Chairman of the Department of Fixed Prosthodontics and Occlusion after 18 years to Maine for our kick-off event in September. Bill Robbins will join us in May with “A 50 Year Retrospective- My Failures and Lessons Learned”. Victor Clavijo and Martin Gollner from Brazil and Germany respectively are complementing our international speaker program.
Online and in person meetings will round off this year’s curriculum. Each Treatment Planning Tuesday Session will feature a master clinician. All full team, front office/ admin team, assistant meetings and dental hygiene meetings will also be available to you.
Early registrants are invited to attend Sam Low’s team event on June 24th: Innovative Periodontics: “How to from Techniques to Products”. A part of his presentation will also focus on the introduction of guided biofilm therapy (GBT) into everyday practice. Sam Low is Professor Emeritus, University of Florida and Past President of the American Academy of Periodontology.
In closing, as I was listening to the Commencement remarks to MIT's Class of 2022, I couldn’t help but notice the similarities between our community’s deepest values: “A commitment to excellence. Integrity. Rising on your own merits. Boldness. Humility. An open spirit of collaboration. A strong desire to make a positive impact. And a sense of responsibility to make the world a better place”.
Please accept our invitation to an exciting, personally and professionally rewarding academic year 2022/23.

Our Philosophy on Continuing Education
The Casco Bay Study Club is affiliated with the Seattle Study Club network, an international collaboration of dentists dedicated to promoting excellence in comprehensive dentistry The Casco Bay Study Club (CBSC) is a group of Maine dentists who enjoy sharing ideas, discussing treatment concepts and learning from leading experts. We share the same philosophy on continuing education:
The most successful outcomes result from total case management, an understanding of the overall picture and how each treatment or technique functions within it
Our highest levels of comprehension are achieved as a direct result of participation and interaction rather than observation.
Learning from and with one's peers in a structured, supportive environment is the best way to reach one ' s highest potential in the field of dentistry
Membership
Members of the Casco Bay Study Club are dedicated to the advancement of team treatment planning and total case management as the optimal tools for achieving the best patient care We meet monthly to review the latest technological advances and treatments, and share new techniques and styles of serving patients. We also collaborate on challenging cases so that our patients reap the benefits of an entire team of knowledgeable dentists.

Fundamentals of Esthetic Treatment Planning: From Simple to Complex
Dr. Pascal Magne is an Associate Professor of Esthetic Dentistry at the University of Southern California, School of Dentistry (USCSD). He was the senior lecturer in the Division of fixed Prosthodontics and Occlusion at the University of Geneva Dental School. He authored the book Bonded Porcelain Restorations in the Anterior Dentition - A Biomimetic Approach and is considered one of the most outstanding books in the field of adhesive and esthetic dentistry.
This course will be an intense lecture program for all practitioners wishing to update their skills in anterior bonded restorations using direct composite resins and indirect porcelain veneers. Although bonded ceramics seem to represent the ultimate biologic, functional, mechanical and aesthetic restoration for compromised anterior teeth, the number of ultraconservative treatment strategies and materials continues to grow. The practitioner is faced with many esthetic treatment modalities and products. The major disadvantage of this evolution is that it becomes increasingly difficult to make the appropriate choices in a given clinical situation. The availability of various treatment alternatives often allows for selection of an approach that conserves the maximum amount of intact tissue and which complies with the biomimetic principle - Bio-emulation TM. Treatment options should always first include the simplest procedures such as chemical treatments and freehand composites and then progress toward more sophisticated approaches such as laminate veneers.
Regardless of the treatment option that is selected, the cornerstone remains the appropriate treatment planning and sequence. Diagnostic wax-up and diagnostic mock-ups can be used for simple direct composite cases to the most complicated biocorrosion full mouth rehabilitation with increase of DVO.
Upon completion of this session, attendees should be able to:
• The latest scientific discoveries about no-post no crown restorations
• The core values of biomimetic restorative dentistry
• A review of ultra conservative approaches
• Important procedures to improve the success of your direct compositeresin restorations
• The possibilities of novel semi-indirect approaches using anterior customized CAD/CAM composite resins
• The keys to the success of indirect ceramic restorations(wax-up, mockup, preparation, delivery)

The Analog and Digital Approach. The Best of Both Worlds for Daily Practice
Is a fully digital workflow feasible and practical in esthetic and functional dental reconstructions, or is there room for analog steps to streamline the process and make it more predictable? In implant reconstructions, a successful strategy should include the integration of digital and analog procedures, as well as considering the overall comprehensive workflow rather than single independent steps. This program will highlight the essential analog steps used during the planning and the implementation phases within the digital workflow, to achieve highly functional and esthetic outcomes in complex cases.
Upon completion of this course, attendees should be able to:
• Successfully implement a treatment sequence for daily workflow.
• Recognize the patient perceived stumbling blocks or difficulties before treatment starts.
• Understand predictable esthetic and long-term solutions in individual implant reconstructions.

Does Your Office Bucket Have Holes? ReThinking In-Office Systems to Increase Productivity and Decrease Stress
Dr. Sam Bakuri has a unique way of thinking about his practice and the potential to maximize income by paying attention to things we usually never think of. Did you know the average dental office in the U.S. misses 35 percent of incoming calls? And 86 percent of calls are placed on hold, immediately squandering marketing opportunities! While an external marketing campaign can be very productive, it can also be quite expensive. Why not start by evaluating your own in-office marketing opportunities? They are much more cost effective and create significant income potential. In this fastpaced Business Academy program, participants will quickly learn where the holes are in their buckets (office systems). They will master techniques which can be immediately implemented to fill those holes and increase office income.
Upon completion of this course, attendees should be able to:
• Build a system that will help drop the number of missed calls to below 10 percent
• Construct an efficient new patient data collection system so the front desk doesn't have to spend 45 minutes on a phone call

No Barriers in Life
Through Erik Weihenmayer's groundbreaking adventures around the world, he has explored and defined what it means to live a no barriers life, describing it as a map we build to navigate and pursue a life that matters. Central to this journey is a mindset to continually challenge ourselves to grow and evolve- to climb while others camp. Mr. Weihenmayer describes the key components for shattering barriers and pioneering possibilities, which start with a powerful vision to guide us and reach into the darkness. By relentlessly innovating new systems and approaches along the way, we pioneer our way to solutions. As a blind adventurer who has climbed Mount Everest and kayaked the Grand Canyon, Mr. Weihenmayer understands better than most that barriers are real, not merely perceived, and that obstacles encountered can either stop us in our tracks or be harnessed to propel ourselves to new places we would never otherwise experience.

The Best-Laid Plans...Oft Go Astray
In this rescue mission workshop, Dr. Robert Silva and team are faced with difficult decisions after the most careful planning. Haven't we all been there? As frustrating as it might seem, the Brazilian treatment team and study club members participating in this session will be faced with two issues: Was there a better, more predictable way to treat this patient from the start? How can this treatment be redirected and successfully completed.
A 57- year-old patient presented with a poorly functioning removable prosthesis and failing distal abutment int the lower left posterior segment. An implant-supported solution was sought. During treatment, unexpected events turned this case upside down!
Participants will be confronted with some hard decisions, but will also have great fun in choosing the most prudent path to recovery. Dr. Silva will then share initial treatment alternatives, lay out possible surgical and restorative solutions, and present the eye-opening actual treatment.
Upon completion of this session, attendees should be able to:

The Happiness Advantage: Linking Positive Brains to Performance
Most business is done under the guideline that if you work harder you will be more successful, and then you will be happy. This formula is scientifically backward. More than a decade of research shows training your brain to be positive first actually leads to greater success at work. In fact, only 25 percent of job success is predicted by intelligence — the rest is determined by your optimism, social support network, and the ability to manage energy and stress in a positive way. Based on his book, The Happiness Advantage, and research studying top performers at Harvard and the world's largest banks and Fortune 500 companies, Mr. Achor explains what positive psychology is, how much we can change, and practical applications and strategies for reaping the happiness advantage in the midst of change and challenge.

Dentistry is a unique, fast paced and often stressful profession that can lead to both physical and emotional exhaustion. An estimated 84 percent of dental professionals have reported feeling burnout. It is also suggested that these burnout rates will continue to increase for several reasons, including staff shortages and impacts of the ongoing pandemic. This has resulted in an increase in chronic stress and has led to a large number of dental hygienists choosing to step away from the profession they once loved. We'll discuss how to recharge our professional batteries and provide suggestions on self-care tools that will improve our mental health during times of professional stress. We will uncover ways we can help combat dental workforce shortages and work better as a team during these staffing challenges. When dental healthcare providers approach patient care with standardized treatment based on a protocol, it is assumed all patients are average and will normally respond to treatment similarly. This science of dentistry has created a one-size-fits-all approach to consider aligning treatment modalities with evidence-based dentistry. The art of dentistry, however, clarifies there is great variation in patient disease presentations and subsequent response to therapy. Precision oral healthcare is a multifaceted, data-driven approach to oral healthcare that uses unique and individual characteristics to stratify patients based on risk for myriad oral and systemic diseases. In order to evolve our practices to deliver patient-centered oral care, we must first accurately assess underlying risk factors for common diseases and problems seen in the dental office. The use of precision oral healthcare focuses on creating customized treatment plans that allow for individualized approaches to disease prevention. This course seeks to deliver an overview for tangible risk assessments that can be implemented in the dental office and how such risk assessments can inform crafting individualized treatment plans for the treatment, maintenance and prevention of oral diseases and conditions.
Upon completion of this session, attendees should be able to:
Discover the paradigm shift from the utilization of universal protocols in patient care to precise, individualized approaches to disease prevention and treatment.
Assess individualized risks in the disease modalities of periodontal and periimplant diseases, dental caries, oral pathology, prosthetic complications, airway management, occlusal dysfunction and oral-systemic diseases.

A visit always starts with a connection, whether the patient is new or existing. That experience needs to be received as warm, caring, and welcoming. One way to accomplish this is by building your schedule with less stress. Seek quality over quantity, and make your patients raving fans. Knowing your numbers allows you to grow together as a team, learn how to improve, and celebrate success when you hit your target.
Upon completion of this session, attendees should be able to:
• Maximize connection through the patient experience.
• Understand how to schedule in a way that allows time for patient connection.
• Clarify what needs to be measured to ensure a great patient experience and profitability.

Decoding the Algorithm: Social Media Marketing that Converts
Seventy four percent of Americans use social media on a daily basis. Yet, many dental practices fail to reach the full conversion potential of these platforms. Why? Because we don't know how to leverage the algorithms that dictate which posts get seen and which don't. As a result, even great social media content can fail to reach your target audience and ideal patients. It's time to change that. In this interactive course, you'll develop a successful, team based social media marketing plan and content strategy that gets your practice seen and increases ROI. Create a realistic action plan with implementation tools that can be used by every team member immediately. Leverage the latest tactics like Instagram Reels and content redistribution to maximize your reach. Connect with ideal patients using the most accessible marketing outlet today: social media.
Upon completion of this session, attendees should be able to:
• Leverage social media for conversions.
• Build content that boosts engagement and visibility.
• Repurpose social content to maximize social media efforts.
