In the Zone Zone 6 News from Representative Tim Hagner As you read this the deadline for entries in the Zone 6 Logo contest will have passed. By the time you read the next “In the Zone”, a winner will have been announced. To see the entries and the winning logo, go to: www.pca-cwr.org. Good luck and thank you to all that entered! Wow! That’s the best way to describe the Whistler Weekend. I’m sure everyone who attended feels the same way. Our car, our friends and my new favorite place (next to Bend!), it just doesn’t get any better. There were over 120 Porsches entered, fifty of them lined the upper village on Saturday for the Concours and show, much to the enjoyment and delight of many a visitor. The walking rally was a great way to explore the village and the Sunday Auto-x was a great way to explore the limits of your car. I’m not sure what limits were explored on the wine tour! Maybe I shouldn’t know. Congratulations to the Olympic Peninsula Region for winning the Mark Donahue Trophy, presented to the region that had the most participants, excluding the hosting regions, based on miles driven and membership size. Glad I didn’t have to do the math, only present the Trophy. A “well done” goes to the weekend’s overall winner, and Zone 6 Webmaster, Dennis Coplen. The overall winner is determined by points earned in the three competitive events, the better you do, the more points you earn. The person at the end of the weekend with the most points wins the overall. I’ll be looking forward to next year’s version. Canada West and Pacific North West regions combined forces to host a very well done event. Great job everyone! Speaking of next year, the “Zone 6 Grand Tour” is still going forward. We’re working on a tentative date so you can start your planning. As soon as it becomes available we’ll pass it on. Thank you to the Absaroka Region for being a great host to me and to their President, Stephanie Haider, for the after meeting tour. What a great drive! Graham, I found your car, but not you at Skamania. I think the rain was the factor. When you travel our great Zone, don’t forget to check the website of the region(s) you’ll be traveling through. It’s always great fun to drop-in and meet fellow PCA’ers. I’m sure you’ll be welcome! Hope to see you soon and don’t forget: it really is about the people.

O

n the morning of October 11th, a glorious, sunny fall Saturday, 14 Porsches from the Cascades Region struck out of Ashland’s Oak Knoll golf course on their way to Reno. Traveling a total distance of 320 miles, the caravan drove up historic Highway

66 to the town of Merrill; through the Modoc National Forest to the quaint town of Adin, CA (population 276) for a lunch stop at “The Oney Frosty In Town” (yes, it was the only restaurant in town – but very tasty); skirting the Plumas National Forest to Susanville; and finally arriving in Reno where we lodged at the Grand Sierra Resort Dinner Saturday night was arranged for us at the “Santa Fe Hotel”, a local’s favorite Basque style restaurant by the Reno PCA Chapter. Joined by a few members of the Reno Chapter, 26 Cascade members dined family style on very generous portions of traditional Basque cuisine.

A tour of Ranson Webster’s private Porsche collection Sunday morning was the highlight of the trip. Forming an impressive line-up at the hotel, the caravan drove to Ranson’s showroom where we were joined by 70 – 80 members of the Reno and Sierra Nevada PCA members for the tour. After introductions and a demonstration of an early 4 stroke Porsche engine on a stand, the showroom was opened-up for everyone’s viewing. To say that Ranson’s collection of Porsches was spectacular is an understatement. I counted 48 total Porsches — all restored to factory, mint condition. My favorite cars were the 1987 959 and his 956 that raced at Le Mans! While proud of all his cars, Ranson’s favorite is the world’s only complete collection of Porsche’s racing posters, all mounted and completely surrounding the showroom walls — truly amazing. Following two hours of sensory overload, our members left the showroom where we were led on a drive to Virginia City by members from the Reno Club, where our truly fun trip ended in this raucous, old, historic town which was the heart of Nevada’s silver mining boom in the 1880’s. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Wim Van der Horst Turns 85 A celebratory breakfast to honor our friend From Dave Duarte

O

n the sunny Sunday morning of October 5th, 19 members gathered at Gogi’s restaurant in Jacksonwille to celebrate Wim Van der Horst’s 85th birthday. In Wim’s home country of the Netherlands it is the custom on one’s birthday to treat family and

friends to a dining experience and so in that spirit, Wim offered to treat members of the Club to a sumptuous brunch at Gogi’s. He asked for no gifts but nontheless, the Club presented him with a scale model of a Porsche 356 to add to Wim’s collection. Wim gave a short testimonial towards the end of brunch and offered gratitude for participation in the Porsche Club of America. He is the longest standing member of our local chapter, having attended the very first Porsche Parade in 1956 and still owns his original 1962 Porsche 356 that he purchased at the factory in May of 1962. After brunch, several members took a scenic drive to Applegate Lake to enjoy spectacular Fall scenery and some windy back roads in and around Buncom. We wish Wim many more years of happy motoring and thank him for his active participation in the Club these past many years.

Flashback Our Drive Through Wolf Creek & Club Lunch From Dave Duarte

O

n a bright sunny morning of Saturday, September 17 members gathered at Barnes & Noble to prepare for our monthly drive and a luncheon at Wolf Creek Inn. Two new members, Kristen and Neil Beck joined us in their 2003 silver Boxster. And long time

members, Mary Jane and Roy Pederson, joined us in their beloved silver 356 coupe, on their way back to their winter home in Phoenix, Arizona. Also Michael Hernendez, former Vice President of the Club, showed up to say “hello and to bid us farewell on our drive. Michael is investigating the possibility of resurrecting his 1999 Carrera with an engine transplant. The first part of our drive took us over roads we have not traveled in 7 years out through Evans Creek Road ending in Valley of the Rogue State Park outside Rogue River. Eleven cars then caravaned through more familiar roads near Grants Pass as we traversed through Wilderville and on to Riverbanks Road, Robertson Bridge and eventually ending at Wolf Creek Inn for luncheon. The drive was nearly 3 hours long with a rest break and some of us were getting hungry as we entered the parking lot at Wolf Creek Inn. We all enjoyed a delicious lunch at Wolf Creek Inn as we engaged in lively conversation and camaraderie. As we left the Inn we reminisced on how much we were grateful for the fine weather, scenic drive, and for the friendships that we all share.
