Infiniti’s “SYNAPTIQ” won People’s Choice Award in 11th Los Angeles Auto Show Design Challenge. The SYNAPTIQ driver stays in one cockpit environment for three different vehicles: street, off-road, air race

nfiniti won the first-ever People’s Choice Award as part of the 11 annual Los Angeles Auto Show Design Challenge with SYNAPTIQ, a unique answer to this year’s theme of “Sensing the Future: How Will Cars Interact With Us In 2029?” Infiniti designers from its San Diego studio looked toward the future in which augmented reality, 3D hologram and wearable technologies may be a part of the everyday driving experience, creating a seamless interaction between man and machine. Then, to demonstrate exactly how these futuristic technologies could be used to make driving even more interactive, the Infiniti Design team imagined a vehicle triathlon called the A.R.C. Race which includes air, rally and circuit competitions. For each of the three races, the SYNAPTIQ design provides a universal fuselage for the driver to control each of the different air, rally and circuit vehicles.

The first is a Formula 1™-style race car competing in a road course from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Then the driver pilots an off-road racer to the Grand Canyon. Finally, the third portion of the vehicle triathlon is a radical, gymkhana-style jet air race back to Los Angeles, where the driver would maneuver around 3D holographic rings that mark the course. For each vehicle and race, the driver stays within the same cockpit, allowing them to stay within a familiar environment using the same interfaces. The driver is therefore able to better adapt to any driving or flying situation, as demonstrated with the experiences encountered between the three A.R.C. Race situations and the vehicle types used.

(

“As designers, we are always looking toward what’s next, but SYNAPTIQ allows us to conceptualize what’s even further out for drivers in the future,” said John Sahs, interior design manager at Infiniti, and leader of the SYNAPTIQ team. “Yet, through the A.R.C. Race concept, we were also able to imagine a way to effectively demonstrate how these technologies could be used, whether the vehicle is on or off road, or even in the air.”

The team envisions a modular fuselage on a new human-machine interface that controls the vehicles by connecting the SYNAPTIQ S.U.I.T. (Symbiotic User Interface Technology) through a docking attachment, effectively making man and machine work as one. Simulating physical interaction with the vehicle, the S.U.I.T. suspends the pilot into the proper position for driving or flying, and is woven with synthetic muscles that both en-

hance the driving experience and give tactile feedback to the driver. Inside the fuselage, liquid crystal canopies are enhanced with an augmented reality system that actively display relevant information for the pilot, such as his vital signs and dynamic vehicle updates.

T

he new Great Wall H6 and Steed 5 are continuing their world tour, ending the fourth stage through central America, and launching themselves to the extreme tip of the continent, the Tierra del Fuego. An adventure that started this year in June, and is developing through seven stages. Seven as the name of the project 7milamiglialontano, and seven are the crews that are taking over the helm of the two unstoppable Great Wall vehicles made available by the Italian importer Eurasia.

This is a journey with a strong solidarity meaning, since each stage (you can buy parts of the journey by making a donation on the website www.7milamiglialontano.com) is conducted under the banner of a charity association like the Amici della Zizzi of Brescia, who has just finished the 4th stage and has more than twentysix years of experience in supporting children with family problems. The fourth stage was a definitely challenging one, which has spanned nine boundaries through Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.

(

ACROSS AMERICA

(

The new Great Wall H6 SUV and Steed 5 Pick Up, both 2.0 turbo diesel 4x4 with 143 hp, have crossed the wonderful lands of the ancient Mayan civilization, that after the devastation of the Spanish conquest are still marked by great social contradictions, as if to symbolize the geology of this area, that has always been the scene of major geological changes due to tectonic movements that find expression in frequent volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, with which the local people have coexisted for thousands of years. For the 5th stage, the non-governmental international cooperation COOPI took over, that provides support to people living with HIV and their children through projects such as the Hogar de San Camilo, in Lima (Peru). The crew of COOPI is now traveling on the Andes, in part on the paths of the Dakar, where in recent years Great Wall has increasingly achieved interesting sporting results, in order to get to the Tierra del Fuego and up again through the endless prairies of Argentinian Patagonia along the Atlantic coast with expected arrival in Buenos Aires on December 28, where the two Great Wall will be shipped to South Africa. From there the last two stages through the uncertainty of the African continent will begin.

MULTIPLE TESTS DONE AT EXTREME TEMPERATURES TO ASSURE PROPER FUNCTIONING OF ALL COMPONENTS

(

TESTING A CAR TO ITS LIMITS

(

B

efore being marketed, a vehicle is put through a whole raft of tests in extreme conditions in countries all over the world to make sure that it works properly. During the summer, a team of some 50 technicians and engineers from SEAT’s Technical Centre travel to a desert area in southern Spain to carry out the Summer Tests, a series of checks done at temperatures of over 40ºC. This year the new Leon X-Perience has been tested to its limits on all sorts of surfaces. Each model is driven over some 20,000 kilometres, and each and every one of the tests carried out has a practical goal for the customer. For example, how do you know when you have to change the engine’s air filter? In order to calculate this, the car travels behind a dense cloud of dust thrown up by a support vehicle for almost two hours. And tests of a different kind are also carried out on this sort of terrain to guarantee that no dust gets inside the car even in the most extreme situation. The car is driven over a gravel surface for some 3,000 kilometres so as to analyse the impact of the gravel on the entire area of the underbody, wheel wells, external and rear end of the bumper. Engineers make an appraisal of the endurance of materials so that they last for the entire life of the car itself. In the klapper test, checks are carried out to make sure that the more than 3,000 parts comprising the car do not make annoying noises for the driver and passengers. This test is carried out on rough surfaces, with support equipment such as endoscopy being used, as well as the human ear. The Summer Tests also check stability control systems with the latest software modifications. These tests are carried out on lowgrip tracks, and are confirmed on a track with bends of different curvature.

(

TESTING A CAR TO ITS LIMITS

(

Roads with ice, snow or in a bad state of repair, driving at altitude, different fuels, extreme heat or intense cold…., each country may have its own specific requirements. And for this reason, in addition to the Summer Tests, the Technical Centre’s experimenters travel to countries in the five continents if and when required – Mexico, North Africa, Russia, China as well as all over Europe and elsewhere – to submit the car to all sorts of test.

THE LEGEND RETURNS

(

T

he all-new Shelby GT350 Mustang, featuring the most powerful naturally aspirated Ford production engine ever, is a world-class performance vehicle, designed to tackle the planet’s most challenging roads – an all-day track car that’s also street legal. The new GT350 builds on Carroll Shelby’s original idea – transforming a great everyday car into a dominant road racer – by taking advantage of a sixth-generation Mustang to create a special driving experience. Driving enthusiasts behind the wheel of a Shelby GT350 can expect to be treated to the most balanced, nimble and exhilarating production Mustang yet. Ford engineers took an innovative approach with GT350. Rather than develop individual systems to perform well independently, every component and shape is optimized to work in concert; balance is the key. While paying rigorous attention to detail, the team pushed the envelope with cutting-edge materials and technologies. “When we started working on this car, we wanted to build the best possible Mustang for the places we most love to drive – challenging back roads with a variety of corners and elevation changes – and the track on weekends,” said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development. “Every change we made to this car was driven by the functional requirements of a powerful, responsive powerplant – nimble, precise handling and massive stopping power.”

(

THE LEGEND RETURNS

(

TRACK-TUNED DRIVELINE Early in development of the GT350, it was decided a high-revving, naturally aspirated V8 engine would best suit a track-focused Mustang. “The final product is essentially an all-new powerplant unique to GT350 – and one that takes true advantage of the new chassis dynamics of the Mustang platform,” said Jamal Hameedi, chief engineer, Ford Global Performance Vehicles. The new 5.2-liter engine is the first-ever production V8 from Ford with a flat-plane crankshaft, an architecture typically found only in racing applications or exotic European sports cars. Unlike a traditional V8, where the connecting rods are attached to the crankshaft at 90-degree intervals, this design evenly spaces all crank pins at 180-degree

intervals. The 180-degree, flat-plane layout permits a cylinder firing order that alternates between cylinder banks, reducing the overlap of exhaust pressure pulses. When combined with cylinder-head and valvetrain advancements, this permits better cylinder breathing, further extending the performance envelope of the V8. The result is the most powerful naturally aspirated production Ford engine ever, at more than 500 horsepower, with a torque peak above 400 lb.-ft. The track capability is enhanced by the output characteristics of the engine – the 5.2-liter V8 features an exceptionally broad torque curve. The flat-plane 5.2-liter V8 gives drivers an enormous amount of performance and flexibility within each gear of the lightweight six-speed manual transmission.

“Everything we changed on GT350 is xxxx purely functional-driven design, with

the goal of improving the overall performance of the car,” said Chris Svensson, Ford design director, The Americas. “We optimized the aero shape of the car, and then fine-tuned what was left to increase downforce and cooling airflow.” All bodywork from the windshield forward is unique to this high-performance model and up to two inches lower than Mustang GT.

(

THE LEGEND RETURNS

(

A standard Fordtuned Torsen limited-slip differential optimizes cornering grip and straight-line traction. “Make no mistake, this is an American interpretation of a flat-plane crankshaft V8, and the 5.2-liter produces a distinctive, throaty howl from its four exhaust tips, said Hameedi. BALANCED DYNAMICS The new Mustang platform is the strongest in the history of the brand, with torsional stiffness increased 28 percent over the previous model. That stiff structure ensures the suspension geometry remains consistent, even under hard driving on back roads and tracks. Front stiffness is further improved on GT350 with a cutting-edge injection-molded carbon fiber composite grille opening and optional lightweight tower-to-tower brace.

The front track has been increased while spring rates and bushings have been recalibrated all around, with ride height reduced compared to Mustang GT. For optimum handling, the wheels need to respond quickly to the contours of the road and driver input. Reducing unsprung mass is key to improving that response, but a balance must be struck between taking mass out of a suspension and delivering truly capable braking performance. Due to the significant speeds the car can develop, GT350 features the most trackcredible brake system ever offered on a Ford vehicle in terms of absolute stopping power, fade resistance and brake pedal feel. The brakes are two-piece cross-drilled iron discs mounted to aluminium hats. At the front are massive 394-millimeter rotors

clamped by Brembo six-piston fixed calipers with integrated caliper bridges, while 380-millimeter rotors at the rear utilize fourpiston calipers. GT350 makes use of extra-stiff 19-inch aluminium-alloy wheels – 10.5 inches wide in front, 11.0 inches in the rear – clad in stateof- the-art Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires with GT350-specific sidewall construction, tread face and compound. The custom tires are designed to deliver maximum grip on the road or at the track. Ultra-quick responsiveness to changing conditions is provided by the first-ever Ford application of continuously controlled MagneRide dampers. The dampers are filled with a hydraulic fluid impregnated with iron particles; when an electric current is passed

through the fluid, a near-instant adjustment of the suspension performance can be made. With wheel position sensors monitoring motion thousands of times per second combined with other vehicle data, changes can be made to each corner independently every 10 milliseconds for optimum handling performance. This is a system designed not just to make the car handle better but to instill greater confidence in even the best driver. OBSESSION TO DETAIL The new aluminium hood has been lowered and sloped, compared to the base Mustang, tightly wrapped around the engine for the smallest possible aerodynamic signature. Front and rear aero elements have been balanced to work together on the track.

(

THE LEGEND RETURNS

(

With more options to choose from, there is a Mustang to fit any lifestyle. The upgraded V8 in Mustang GT – now delivering 435 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of torque – is joined by a 300-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 and an all-new 2.3-liter EcoBoost® engine that brings state-of-the-art technology to Mustang. The Mustang 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine uses direct injection, variable cam timing and a twin-scroll turbocharger to deliver the performance drivers expect with an output of 310 horsepower and 320 lb.-ft. of torque.

The fascia has been resculpted to provide the aggressive lower front splitter with maximum pressure and a ducted belly pan delivers significant downforce. The hood outlet acts as a heat extractor while also reducing underhood lift at high speed. At the rear, much of the engineering was focused on creating an aggressive functional diffuser doing double duty to increase downforce and provide cooling air to the optional differential cooler, and a subtle lip spoiler across the trailing edge of the decklid increases downforce without adding excess drag. The athletic stance of the all-new Mustang is further accentuated with recontoured aluminum front fenders to accommodate the wider front track and wider wheel arches. Front fender vents work with vented inner fenders to draw out turbulent air in the wheel wells

and smoothly direct it down the side of the car. The forward-angled grille is designed with individual openings to draw air through the radiator, high-pressure engine air intake, cooling ducts for the front brakes and, optional with the Track Pack, an engine oil cooler and a transmission cooler. FOCUS-DRIVEN COCKPIT CHANGES Like everything else about GT350, the interior has been optimized for driving, beginning with the specially designed Recaro sport seats with a unique cloth. Hundreds of hours and many prototypes went into a seat that is both comfortable in daily driving and capable on the track. A flat-bottom steering wheel makes it easier for the driver to get in and out, and is more ergonomic on the racetrack.

(

THE LEGEND RETURNS

( Gauges are upgraded to reflect the enormous performance capability of the car. Chrome and bright finishes have been reduced or eliminated to prevent sun glare that may distract the driver.

Shelby GT350 Mustang is the latest in an all-new line of Mustang fastback and convertible models, including the specially designed 50th Anniversary Edition Mustang. More than 9.2 million Mustangs have been sold since the car’s 1964 debut.

The advanced technology inherent to Mustang has been deployed for duty in the Shelby GT350. An all-new integrated driver control system allows selection of five unique modes that tailor ABS, stability control, traction control, steering effort, throttle mapping, MagneRide tuning and exhaust settings, depending on driver preference, to achieve maximum performance. Drivers are invited to test them all. Drivers interested in comfort, convenience and entertainment upgrades may select the Tech Pack, which includes power, leathertrimmed seats; Shaker Audio; 8-inch MyFord Touch® LCD touch screen; and dual zone electronic temperature control, to name a few features. “We took the best Ford Mustang yet and massaged every aspect of the car that affects the performance driving experience,” said Hameedi. “We tested endlessly on the most challenging roads and tracks in the world, and we believe serious drivers will love the Shelby GT350 Mustang.”

Giulietta Sprint 1954

Giulietta Sprint 1957

n the first half of the 1950s, after war had taken its toll, Alfa Romeo was obliged to prioritise the consolidation of its production volumes, which were still not very considerable. Consequently, at the end of the 1951 season, the management decided to halt racing activity: the F.1 Alfetta, after the two World Championships of 1950 with Farina and 1951 with Fangio, retired undefeated from racing in order to concentrate labour and resources on what was to become the Giulietta. From the production point of view on the other hand, the “1900” the first car designed and produced industrially, doesn’t manage to boost the numbers on its own. A model to follow on from the “1900” is needed, a car dedicated to a wider public, but which maintains the particular characteristics of an Alfa Romeo: the Giulietta. It makes its début in Turin in 1954 with the Giulietta Sprint – it was the first time that a new model was presented in the coupé version rather than the saloon. The Giulietta Sprint invents the high-performance compact coupé segment. The car has an unusual technical and performance level with respect to its positioning. In 1954 it was even difficult to identify its competitors. A completely new engine also made its début with the Giulietta Sprint, an engine which even invents a displacement: “1300”. Born together with the Sprint is the legendary “bialbero” (twin-shaft), one of the most important engines in the history of Alfa Romeo. The Giulietta’s 1290 is made entirely of light aluminium, with twin-shaft timing: all solutions drawn both from racing and from aeronautics. This means performance, lightness and reliability.

60 YEARS - ALFA ROMEO GIULIETTA

( With this engine, and all the rest of the mechanics, the Giulietta Sprint reaches a top speed of 170 km/h – incredible for the time – in complete safety, thanks to the excellent roadholding. To increase the performance (80 HP and 180 km/h) and offer a coupé that drivers and private racing teams could use in races, the Giulietta Sprint Veloce was created in 1956. At its début in the legendary Mille Miglia it took eleventh place overall: ahead of her were only cars of double the size and behind her all of the Porsche 356s.

Giulietta Sprint

The 1.290 cc. engine

The Giulietta Sprint’s style was worked out at Portello, in the style department. The first prototype was dubbed the “ugly duckling”, before being developed, definitively by Bertone through the work of Franco Scaglione. He also designed the near-contemporary “2000 Sportiva”, the subsequent “Giulietta Sprint Speciale” and the wonderful “33 Stradale” of 1967. The Giulietta Sprint has a design which is streamlined and light, essential and aggressive, and which expresses motion even when stationary. There isn’t a single part out of place: it’s a masterpiece. The front end masterfully interprets the style of the triangular grille, an integral and essential element in Alfa Romeo vehicles. The tail is characterised by the wraparound rear window and two side “fins” that “drive” the overall design. The Giulietta Sprint was officially presented to the public at the 1954 Turin Motor Show and was an immediate hit. There were around 2,000 bookings, numbers that took Alfa Romeo and the Bertone body shop, which was to build the bodywork, completely by surprise.

The Giulietta also takes on a female name, sweet and unmistakable, a name which has provoked a great deal of speculation. The most widely accepted story takes us to Paris, October 1950, in a restaurant, during a dinner to celebrate the presentation of the “1900” berlina at the “Mondial”. At the restaurant was an impoverished Russian prince, known for appearing in Parisian venues. That evening, in front of the Alfa table, the prince exclaimed: “There are eight Romeos and not a single Juliet!” (Giulietta). When the time comes to choose the most appropriate name for the new car, that episode comes to the mind of management, and so it is that the “tipo 750” becomes the “Giulietta”.

Giulietta Berlina

The Giulietta Spider arrived in 1955. Alfa Romeo decided to get designers to compete in defining its style and, upon the extremely “modern” proposal of Bertone, the top management chose Pininfarina. After the first 600 examples intended exclusively for the American market and by popular demand, the Giulietta Spider is also offered in Europe and the rest of the world: it immediately becomes a timeless icon, the car of “la dolce vita”. In the same way as the Sprint, the Spider too becomes a “Spider Veloce”: 80 HP and 180 km per hour. It’s unquestionably the Giulietta berlina (saloon) that provides the sales volumes. It too came into being in 1955 and consolidated Alfa Romeo’s reputation for outstanding saloons, Alfa Romeo having invented the “sports saloon” concept itself. The Giulietta berlina maintains all the technical and performance qualities of the Sprint and Spider; the engine is slightly less powerful but still shines, with a “package” of greater versatility that ensures comfort and space for five. We might say that it was highly modern concept for the time. When Giulietta berlina number 100,001 rolled off the Portello production lines, it was Giulietta Masina, the muse of Federico Fellini, who celebrated this important production milestone: the first sixdigit figure for an Alfa Romeo model. 1957 saw the arrival of the Giulietta Turismo Internazionale (“t.i.” for short) and the Giulietta Sprint Speciale, better known as the “SS”. With a striking line, the SS features the 1.3-litre bialbero boosted to 100 HP, able to propel the car to 190 km/h: the bialbero 1300 raises the bar of performance once again. The line of the Giulietta Sprint Speciale recalls the “Disco Volante” (Flying Saucer) of 1952; one of its particular features is the attention paid to its aerodynamics.

(

60 YEARS - ALFA ROMEO GIULIETTA

( Giulietta Berlina

Built on the chassis of the “SS”, the “Giulietta SZ” is born in 1960 to offer gentleman drivers a car in which to compete in the Gran Turismo category. Carrozzeria Zagato, historic partner of Alfa Romeo, assumes an important role in the conception of the SZ. The SZ is produced in two series, the second characterised by a Kamm tail, and in addition to an aerodynamic light aluminium body has a 1290 cc bialbero boosted to 100 HP which propels the car above the threshold of 200 km/h. 210 examples of the SZ are produced between 1960 and 1962. The last car in the Giulietta family to make its exit was the “1300 Sprint” in 1965: after 177,700 units produced, the Giulietta makes way for the Giulia. In all of its versions, the Giulietta model represented a significant social phenomenon. It featured in many films of the sixties, the boom years and those of la Dolce Vita. It really won everybody over: from the man on the street, who certainly dreamed of

having one, to famous personalities such as Sofia Loren, Gina Lollobrigida, Ester Williams, Diana Dors, Vittorio Gassman and many more. It became the emblem of Italy’s social and economic development and it was even chosen to illustrate the quality of other products in the “Carosello” TV programme’s advertising sketches. Domenico Modugno, for example, shouted “With API you flyyyyy!”, after filling up at the petrol station before setting off in his Giulietta Spider. And fly it did, both on the road and off the shelves (so to speak). The Giulietta can be said to have invented a new class, of cars with a displacement of 1300, destined to become a European formula in a short space of time. That’s without mentioning that in 1955 there wasn’t a standard production saloon in the world with the mechanical characteristics and performance of the Giulietta. It therefore became a model to follow, and despite the passage of time, this model still maintains a strong personality that confirms Alfa Romeo’s great tradition.

Hot pinball drifting action burns rubber in Auckland

A GIANT

PINBALL GAME

A 20,000 strong crowd flocked to the streets of downtown Auckland, witnessing a motorsport spectacle of epic proportions. In the high octane Red Bull Drift Shifters competition, it was ‘Mad Mike’ Whiddett (NZ) who reigned supreme in the final, defeating an international field. Chris Forsberg (USA) took second place

A GIANT PINBALL GAME

A unique motorsport event transformed the streets of Auckland City (New Zealand) into a giant pinball inspired drift track, if only for one last December Sunday. Red Bull Drift Shifters saw the best drivers from all around the world including the likes of Chris Forsberg, Daigo Saito and Ken ‘Nomuken’ Nomura descending upon New Zealand’s largest city to battle it out in front of 20,000 fans. When the tyre smoke cleared and the burnt rubber settled, it was local hero ‘Mad Mike’ Whiddett who emerged victorious, clocking 4,012,088 points.

A GIANT PINBALL GAME “This is my dream, and now I’m living it,” says Whiddett. “It’s a lot of hard work, but Drift Shifters has put New Zealand on a global stage today. We showed how professional the sport has become. It’s such a surreal moment right now.” The unique concept of Red Bull Drift Shifters has created a format that allows drivers to break free from drifting’s traditional

dual car battle style. The competition is all about a race against the clock to score points from automated speed, angle and proximity sensors positioned around the city street course. It is literally a giant pinball game for drift cars. Strategy also plays a major part of each competition run. Detailed consultation with spotters and mechanics allows drivers to attack the course with their own carefully planned and executed route.

A GIANT PINBALL GAME

Contestants need to score points in the millions to progress through each round, all the while battling a 70 seconds countdown clock. “This was unlike any other drift event in the world,” says second place finisher and recently crowned Formula Drift Champion Chris Forsberg. “It’s the ultimate show of car control. I really hope to get the opportunity to come back and compete at Drift Shifters again.”

DAKAR TIME!

Toyota’s top driver Giniel de Villiers (2009 winner) will drive the Toyota Hilux of Toyota Imperial South Africa Dakar Team

Dakar! The sole name is enough to call to the mind images of infinite desert plains broken only by the smoking trail of lone machines striving to reach their destination overcoming countless difficulties and challenges. Epic journeys that created heroes but also claimed lives. A fascinating piece of motorsport history that has not lost its appeal (or its name) even when it was forced to move across the Atlantic and discover South America. Once again men and machines will be tested this years in the quest for the Dakar trophy through the challenging grounds of Argentina, Bolivia and Chile. Buenos Aires to Iquique and back again to Buenos Aires, 13 stages with more than 9000 Km to cover (for cars). The Dakar 2015 will see a huge turnout to have the largest participation ever: 665 competitors from more than 50 nationalities are expected at the start (138 will compete in cars, but there are also motorbikes, quads and trucks). The brands involved in the race also cover much of the globe: from Mini to Mitsubishi to Renault and Toyota they all will have a shot at the big prize.

DAKAR TIME!

PIT STOP The two top teams at this year’s Dakar show up in Buenos Aires with an impressive roster! The Peugeot-Total Team with the Peugeot 2008 DKR will dive into the Argentinian prairies with 11 time Dakar winner Stephane Peterhansel (6 with bikes and 5 with cars), Carlos Sainz (winner in 2010) and Cyril Despres (5 time Dakar winner with bikes). The Mini Monster Energy Rally Raid Team responds with the MINI ALL4 Racing by lining up 2014 winner Nani Roma (who also won on bike in 2004), Orlando Terranova and Krzysztof Holowczyc. Also in the Mini family (with the Qatar Rally Team) is Middle East Rally Champion Nasser Al-Attiyah.

DAKAR TIME!

Last year Nani Roma (ESP) won with Mini over teammate Stephane Peterhansel (FRA) in a thrilling finish. This year the game is on once more with Nasser AlAttiyah (QAT), Ginniel de Villiers (ZAF) and Carlos Saintz (ESP) also eyeing the trophy. Stephane Peterhansel will try to strip Mini of another win by driving for Peugeot. The first stage, held on Sunday January 4, will take the drivers to Villa Carlos Paz through the Argentinian countryside. Other 12 stages will follow, the longest (1024 Km in one day) from Termas Rio Hondo to Rosario (Argentina) on January 16. The last stage the next day crowns the champions of this off-road endurance classic.

PIT STOP Q&A with Nani Roma Q - do you honestly think your Mini is at the end of a long way? A - What do you mean? The MINI is still strong and even in the last year we could develop and improve the car! Q - what are you expecting from the Peugeot challenge? A -I don´t know. I know nothing exactly and I have no idea about their power. We have to wait until Dakar before I can say something. But for sure, when a big company like Peugeot enters the Dakar they will be well prepared. Q - do you believe the 2 wheels drive could be really competitive? A -It depends on the organization and the route they made. When you have tracks with big stones and holes they for sure have a big advantage. When it is twisty we are better. For sure the buggies have a big advantage with their bigger wheel travel and the weight. But that are the rules and we have to accept them. Q - in your opinion why so many successful bikers moved to cars in the Dakar history? A - For sure as a motorbike rider you have to be more fit and it is really hard. Your body moves all the time together with the bike. And maybe after some years you don´t feel strong enough or you want to have a new challenge. And of course you can use your experience even in the car which you can drive for a lot more years. Q - are you attracted by some other motorsport categories? which is your next sport challenge? A - In the moment my focus is on the Dakar!

WHAT A SEASON!

2014 was undoubtedly the best season ever for the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series. In his third year under the NASCAR banner, the European Series saw the competition rise to the highest level in its young history. An average of 27 cars entered each of the six event in the calendar and a grand total of 99 drivers took the wheel of the powerful European stock-cars in the two divisions, but the quality of the racing and the show generated by the thundering V8s on the best tracks of the Old Continent are even more impressive. Title and Trophies all went down to the line in the last races of the Le Mans Finals and left over 52,000 fans breathless until the last turn of the last lap. A superb mix of established protagonists, world-class newcomers, talented young drivers and experienced gentlemen battled all season long in a Championship that proved to have found a winning formula with the active involvement and support of sponsors like Whelen Engineering, Michelin and Silverline Tools. Interest around the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series is growing and the number of young talents that shined this year make the future of NASCAR in Europe look brighter than ever. The Series looks now to grow even better for 2015, when

Consistency was the key for the Hasselt-native, who notched a total of 1 win, 10 top-5s and 12 top-10s – the only driver to never finish outside the top-10, with an average finishing position of 3.8 that will set the bar extremely high for 2015.

WHAT A SEASON! Three drivers fought until the end in the ELITE 2 Division, where Maxime Dumarey (#24 PK Carsport Chevrolet SS) emerged as the winner, but rookie Philipp Lietz (#86 TB Renauer Motorsport Ford Mustang) came just 7 points shy of a major comeback and 16-year-old NWES Drivers Program member Thomas Ferrando (#22 Overdrive Chevrolet Camaro) ended up third, 32 points from the leader. Kumpen and Dumarey also granted team PK Carsport the win in the Teams Championship, amassing a total of 2 wins, 19 top-5s and 23 top-10s.

ELITE 1 Trophies: Italian En-Plein Kumpen wasn’t the only newcomer to immediately pick up the pace. His fellow countryman Fabrizio Armetta (#31 CAAL Racing Chevrolet SS) conquered the Challenger Trophy at the end of a season-long duel with

PIT STOP The NASCAR Whelen Euro Series was founded in 2008 by Team FJ, a Motorsport company based in Blois. It was named NASCAR official Series in January 2012 thanks to a long-term partnership signed with NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing), and Whelen Engineering as title sponsor of the Series. The season is made up of 24 races, equally split among ELITE 1 and ELITE 2 division, on the best European tracks. Team FJ introduced a stunning innovation on July 7-8, 2012 by organizing the first NASCAR Touring Series race on an oval track in Europe. An half-mile circuit was built in the centre of Tours (France) with an all new 9째 banking, identical to the one in place at the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway. With four races in two days, these 400 HP V8 monsters are sure to provide thrilling bumper-to-bumper racing and a lot of family fun around the track! In the pure NASCAR tradition, race fans can get closer to the action than ever and feel the unique in Europe paddock atmosphere thanks to drivers, teams and cars always available for the spectators.

PIT STOP Standardized push-to-pass parameters again are among the sporting and technical regulations incorporated in the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series rulebook released this week. Push-to-pass, which was introduced to the engine-chassis package in July 2012 on the streets of Toronto, will have parameters for each of the 11 road/street course races. The option gives drivers a turbocharger boost to 161 kPa and additional 200 RPM with the push of a button located on the steering wheel. There’s no delay in activation or refresh time. The drivers will have 10 uses of the overtake system for all road/street course races, with 20 seconds per push at NOLA Motorsports Park, Long Beach, Barber Motorsports Park, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, Toronto and Mid-Ohio. Races at Brasilia (Brazil), St. Petersburg, Detroit (two races) and Sonoma Raceway will carry 15 seconds per activation.

Power, for his part, has won 24 out of the 139 times he’s strapped into an Indy car 17.26 percent of the races he’s started. Power’s winning percentage isn’t unparalleled among his contemporaries, though. A GINETTA-NISSAN LMP3 FOR ROLLCENTRE RACING Rollcentre Racing confirmed their intentions to contest the 2015 European Le Mans Series with a Ginetta Nissan. Rollcentre Racing team owner and driver Martin Short made the decision to return to the Le Mans Series following a Ginetta-Nissan open evening on December 11, where the design team and key suppliers presented their vision for the new series. Ginetta Chairman Lawrence Tomlinson said: “The launch of the Ginetta-NissanLMP3 has been an incredible success, with Rollcentre Racing’s purchase marking the eighth chassis sold thus far. The first cars will be on track in early 2015 and we are looking forward to an amazing season.” The Ginetta-Nissan LMP3 car, and indeed the newly-created LMP3 class which is mandated by the ACO, offers teams and drivers a controlled route into the latest arena of Le Mans prototype thanks to strict controls on running costs. “After some amazing years racing with the ACO and the Le Mans Series, I never really envisaged being able to return, however Lawrence Tomlinson and Ewan Baldry’s vision of Ginetta-Nis-

san’s new LMP3 car caught my attention,”said Short. “This car is a ‘proper’ Le Mans Prototype, and with this car, Ginetta-Nissan have - in true Tomlinson style - hit the ground running hard with a terrific package. I am incredibly excited to be adding a new ‘Back to Le Mans’ chapter to Rollcentre Racing and of course, looking forward to working with Lawrence once again.” Rollcentre Racing will collect their car prior to the first race of the European Le Mans Series at Silverstone on 10/11 April, with the operation being run by Short, alongside race engineer Lee Pen.

Acura TLX GT Program Expands For 2015

Acura Motorsports recently announced that Ryan Eversley, a frequent Touring Car race winner and championship contender, will join RealTime Racing and veteran team owner/driver Peter Cunningham for an expanded two-car Acura TLX GT effort in the 2015 Pirelli World Challenge. “To say I’m excited to be joining Acura Motorsports RealTime Racing and the TLX program is a massive understatement!” Eversley said. “It’s every driver’s dream to be associated with a manufacturer, and since I’ve worked alongside Honda Performance Development for the last five years, I feel like it’s a natural progression in our relationship. We have a huge undertaking ahead of us, but after testing a few weeks ago, I can’t think of a better team to handle the challenge. I’m extremely grateful to HPD for all they’ve done for me, and look forward to more success with them.”

Prior to joining Acura Motorsports and RealTime, Eversley, 30, scored five ST (Super Touring?) class victories driving a Honda Civic Si for Compass360 Racing in the Continental Tire Touring Car Championship, finishing second in the ST drivers’ championship in both 2011 and 2013. Three of those victories came in 2014, including the final two races of the season at Circuit of the Americas and Road Atlanta. “We are very excited to see a talent like Ryan move up the ladder from his Honda Touring Car program to Acura Motorsports and the Pirelli World Challenge,” said Lee Niffenegger, senior program engineer with HPD for the Acura effort. “He’s been very successful racing the Honda Civic Si, while also building the necessary experience in various GT and Prototype cars. We believe HPD and our partner RealTime Racing have been making huge strides with the TLX GT during the off-season, and

we fully expect to give the World Challenge GT field a strong run in 2015.” Developed from the production Acura TLX by HPD and RealTime Racing, the Acura TLX GT features HPD chassis and aerodynamic performance parts approved for Pirelli World Challenge competition. It is powered by a direct-injected, twin-turbocharged V6 engine, developed by HPD from the production model, and utilizes all-wheel drive, as found in Acura’s SH-AWD system. Eversley will drive the #43 RealTime Racing Acura TLX GT, alongside Cunningham’s #42 machine, which made its competition debut at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in 2014. Established by Cunningham in 1987, RTR has raced and won in multiple series with both Honda and Acura vehicles. Since entering World Challenge competition in 1993, the team has scored a

record 85 race wins, 14 Manufacturers’ Championships and 14 Drivers’ Championships. Competing in the top category of the Pirelli World Challenge, the Acura TLX GT will be facing competition from the Audi R8, Bentley Continental, Cadillac ATS-V.R, Dodge Viper, Ferrari 458, Lamborghini Gallardo, McLaren 12C and Porsche 911 in 2015. “The Pirelli World Challenge has a lot of strong competitors in GT, but the TLX is the only all-wheeldrive car in the category. For our four-door sedan to be racing head-to-head with the likes of Ferrari and Lamborghini, among others, is pretty cool,” Cunningham said. “After our two initial outings in 2014, we’ve already learned a great deal and we will continue to improve the car during the off-season. When the 2015 season begins, we’ll be ready to go, and we’re already looking forward to the first race, at the Circuit of the Americas, in March.”

PADDOCK MIX Mazda to power Indy Lights Mazda announced the addition of Mazda-power in the all-new 2015 Dallara Indy Lights chassis at the annual Performance Racing Industry (PRI) Trade Show. This was the latest development in its ongoing commitment to motorsports, which includes the Mazda Road to Indy, the most comprehensive driver development system in the world. While most noted for success in sports cars, Mazda has been active in open-wheel, formulacar racing since 1984. In recent years, that has developed into the Mazda Road to Indy, where aspiring racers can advance upwards along a logical progression from karts all the way to the Verizon IndyCar Series. In 2014, Mazda powered both the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship and the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires. For 2015, Mazda adds Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires. The all-new Dallara IL-15 Indy Lights chassis will be powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged Mazda

MZR-R. Originally developed in conjunction with Advanced Engine Research (AER), the MZR-R was first campaigned by Mazda in the American Le Mans Series and Mazda customer teams in the European Le Mans Series. The engine enjoyed several milestone victories, among them were Mazda’s first-ever major North American overall sports car racing win and the 2011 LMP1 engine manufacturers championship. The engine, further developed by AER, will be designed to produce 450 horsepower and last an entire season without a rebuild. The 2015 Mazda Road to Indy schedule will kick off with the fifth annual pre-season Cooper Tires Winterfest at NOLA Motorsports Park, just outside of New Orleans, La., on February 18-20 and will move to Barber Motorsports Park near Birmingham, Ala., on February 24-26. The official season will open at St. Petersburg on March 27-29 and conclude at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on September 11-13.

Scirocco R-Cup China & India

Old hand William Lok secured the title in the Scirocco R-Cup China in a Volkswagen with a double victory at the season finale. The 41 year-old from Hong Kong had already won both races at the start of the season on the course in Zhuhai (CN) and repeated this coup at the same location in races nine and ten of the season. In both training sessions and the two qualifiers, Carlo Piero Mantori (I), who had been the clear leader in the championship before the final, had been the quickest driver. But in both races, he wasn’t able to successfully defend his pole position. In the first race in Zhuhai, he managed to gain second place behind Lok, but only managed eighth in the deciding race. This meant that Lok slid past the Italian in the overall rankings of the one-make cup with 108 points against his 103. A convincing performance at the season finale also saw German brand Engel appear twice on the podium in third and second place.

With a victory hat-trick in the regular driver rankings, Karthik Tharani (IND) has been crowned champion in the season finale of the Volkswagen Polo R-Cup India. In the final race on the Formula 1 course at Greater Noida (IND) on Sunday, the 20 year-old student caught up with Karminder Pal Singh (IND), who had been the clear leader in the rankings up to that point. For him, third, fourth and seventh position in the regular drivers table was ultimately not enough. A brilliant performance was also shown by the guest drivers, who were not entitled to receive any points. In the first race, German Andre Gies, who drove in the Scirocco R-Cup this year, took third place alongside Tharani’s victory. In the second and third races, national karting champion Ameya Bafna (IND) triumphed in a surprising result. As he wasn’t entitled to receive any points however, second-placed Tharani took the full number of points for the victory and took home the title.

THE RACING CAR OF THE FUTURE

Renowned designer, Sergio Rinland, presented his vision for the future of motorsport technology in Indianapolis. The prototype is inspired by the many ideas given by racing fans, students and engineers

THE RACING CAR OF THE FUTURE

PIT STOP Sergio Rinland has a long and distinguished career in motorsport, working with several racing teams including Williams, Brabham, Sauber and Benetton, plus Eagle-Toyota, Indycar and the Opel team in the German Touring Car Championship. Currently, Sergio has his own consulting company - Astauto Ltd (operating as Sergio Rinland Consulting) - working for IndyCar, GP2 and LMP, to name a few. The consulting company is also heavily involved in simulation and alternative energy developments and projects of electric and hybrid cars.

During 2014, Dunlop launched a challenge to racing fans, students and engineers to imagine how motorsport might evolve over the next 125 years. By collecting feedback and ideas from fans at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and by setting up online debates on social networks, the tire company has gathered a range of views on how technology could evolve into the next century of motorsport. The company has chosen Sergio Rinland to design “The Dunlop prototype racing car of the future” inspired by some of the ideas from these forums. Sergio, who has decades of experience in the design of Formula One cars and Le Mans prototypes, was invited to present his vision at the Motorsport Engineering

Conference in Indianapolis last December 10. The conference is organized by the Motorsports Engineering Activity (MSEA) under the slogan: “Motor sport must change. Opportunity or obstacle?” Dunlop is the most successful tire in the history of the 24 Hours of Le Mans (34 outright wins) and last year celebrated 125 years since the invention of the tire. With an eye toward the next 125 years, the prototype shows a drastic change with a range of innovations that improve performance, sustainability and vehicle aerodynamics. The Dunlop prototype racing car of the future includes the following technologies: • Inductive charging through the power generated by contact with the track surface. • A customizable body that allows the car to change shape during the race to improve its aerodynamics.

• Intelligent tires that communicate with the car and driver in order to adapt to surfaces and conditions. • The Energy Recovery System will be able to recover 100% of the braking energy. Renowned designer Sergio Rinland said: “It’s an honor to be invited to participate in a debate on the future of motorsport. The Dunlop prototype racing car of the future has an innovative design. Ideas should lead to a dynamic debate about how motorsport can remain the testing field for advanced technologies that will shape the future of cars and mobility”.

AUDI R8 CUP

Alex Yoong

YOONG... AT THE VERY LAST LAP!

The title decision in the 2014 Audi R8 LMS Cup remained thrilling up to the very end. In the season finale in Abu Dhabi, André Couto won the first race and bumped Alex Yoong from the top spot in the overall classification. In round two, the race driver from Macau started from the pole position and despite 60 kilos of additional weight fought a gripping duel with Yoong. After 15 fiercely fought race laps, Yoong crossed the finish line as the winner with a razor-thin margin

Alex, What was your sweetest moment in the Audi R8 LMS Cup season? What was a reason for disappointment? The sweetest experience, no doubt, was winning the title by taking victory in the last race” said Yoong “ After my accident in Macau last year, it was a great relief to finally hold the trophy in my hands. I experienced my biggest disappointment in Shanghai when I slipped off the brake and hit Marchy (Lee). It took me a long time to get over this because I had thrown a good friend out of the race due to my mistake”.

ahead of Couto and celebrated his fifth single win. Couto, however, thought he was the winner but the decision was only made after the race. The supposed champion received a 25-second time penalty for an overtaking maneuver that did not conform to the regulations and was classified only in ninth place. With a twelve-point advantage the former Formula One driver Yoong crowned himself as the new champion as Team Brothers Racing won the team championship.

YOONG... AT THE VERY LAST LAP!

What was the best strategy under the new rules for 2014? “According to the new regulations the fastest lap in the first race decides the grid position for the second one. It was important to drive a fast lap in the first race, irrespective of what additional weight you’ve got. In many cases, I managed to do a good job of qualifying for the second race and to lay the foundation for my victories that way. In addition, I tried to make clever use of the push-topass function. The new rules make the races trickier; you’ve got to spend more time on thinking and working out a good strategy”. How much did the pressure increase due to the new regulations and the strong competitors? “Particularly at the start of the season there was no way of telling what effects the additional weight would have. But at the end of the year we had figured it out. The competition became fiercer due to a number of talented drivers. The Audi R8 LMS Cup has evolved into one of the leading racing series in Asia. That makes the title even more valuable. And I believe the competition will become even stronger next year”. RGM

PIT STOP “Success on the race track, more than ever before, has become an important tool to thrill customers,” said Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. “That’s why our motorsport program will be extended further next year. In the new Audi Sport TT Cup, young drivers will be given an opportunity to enter motorsport with Audi.” The one-make cup of AUDI AG will line up on the grid at a total of six events in Germany and Austria, doubling up with the DTM. 165 drivers from 30 nations have applied for the Audi Sport TT Cup. The selection process for the 18 available slots has already begun.
