This gathering of magnificent classic cars is the perfect place to premiere both the exclusive Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 and the Cadillac Escala Concept, two cars that preview the future design and technical ideas of two of the world leading automotive brands.


On the other side the Cadillac Escala is a statement of intent for the next iteration of the Cadillac design language as well as featuring technical concepts in development for future Cadillac models

Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6

This incredible car, which measures almost six metres in length, is designed as an electric car. The drive system has an output of 550 kW (750 hp). The shallow underfloor battery allows a range of over 500 kilometres according to the NEDC (over 200 miles according to EPA). With its sensual, emotional design and intelligent details, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 represents the ultimate in luxury. The classic aesthetic proportions of the show car – the extremely long bonnet, the low roof line and the rearward positioning of the greenhouse – recall the aero coupés of days gone by. But this is not retro design – this is a reinterpretation of classic, aesthetic principles. At the same time the design is something unexpectedly new – cool, technoid and reduced. This is exemplified by the aerodynamically intelligent basic shape. Even without aids such as spoilers, the airflow hugs the contours of the vehicle body and only breaks away very late at the tail end of the vehicle. Then there is the surprisingly technoid character of the narrow lights, the partially transparent rims and the split rear window. Clearly defined contours and organically formed wings stand in contrast to the sharply drawn, extended feature line on each side which defines the upper vehicle body from the radiator grille across the entire length of the vehicle to the rear. Below this, the main body has a bulging, muscular look, extending across the entire flank. There is also a striking contrast between the Maybach red paintwork and the chrome strips which sit above the wheel arches and in the centre of the bonnet and boot lid. A reinterpretation of the Mercedes-Maybach radiator grille with its fine, vertical struts accentuates the front end.

The distinctive 24-inch wheels are a development of the aero rim from the Concept IAA (Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile). A transparent shield in the vehicle colour provides a view of the aluminium spokes behind it. A further highlight is provided by the gullwing doors, a hallmark Mercedes design element which has been brought up to date. They underline the sporty character of the vehicle’s silhouette and feature innovatively designed aluminium trim. The exterior mirrors designed as cameras are supported on the wings. The extended, round “boat tail” format of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6’s rear recalls a luxury yacht, and narrow tail lights which emphasise the width of the vehicle are integrated in its outer edges. The interior of the Vision MercedesMaybach 6 is a synthesis of intelligence and

emotion. The dashboard wing curves across the door trim into the seat landscape, creating a 360° lounge. The new “inside out” spatial design adds a particular touch of finesse. The sitting surface forms a horizontal, which transitions into the vertical of the doors and finally becomes the underside of the dashboard wing. In addition to the flowing contours, the material composition produces a luxury experience of the highest order. Authentic materials and colours such as rose gold are used to create luxurious accents. The interior, with its high-quality leather trim, has a cool colour scheme which perfectly underlines the digital innovations. The sitting surfaces have a Chesterfield look. In the doors and dashboard the traditional wood trim softens the appearance of the digital control and display interfaces. As a contrast to the digital world of the displays, elm is used in the floor area, creating a refined yachting look.


In the front luggage area of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is a set of two suitcases, exclusively created for the vehicle. The classic circular instruments are combined with deep displays and act as a reference to the unique history of Mercedes-Benz. In contrast, other display elements are digitally integrated into a continuous glass trim part. Information about the seat, for example, can be shown on this digital strip. Map information is also shown in the front area of the strip. Menu content is extended along a digital line which extends to the sides as far as the occupants, who can set their own content ergonomically using touch control. The front windscreen serves as a transparent display: driving-related data and geographical information is shown across its full width, augmenting the outside world with additional information. This infor-

mation can be controlled and adjusted by the occupants using gestures. Thanks to its four compact permanent magnet synchronous electric motors, this car features allwheel drive. The output of the drive system is 550 kW (750 hp). The shallow underfloor battery has a usable capacity of approx. 80 kWh. This not only allows performance characteristics typical of a sports car (acceleration from 0‑100 km/h in under four seconds, top speed electronically governed at 250 km/h) but also a range of over 500 kilometres according to the NEDC (over 200 miles according to EPA). The quick-charge function is also visionary: as a result of DC charging based on the CCS standard, the system allows an impressive charging capacity of up to 350 kW. In just five minutes enough power can be charged to achieve an additional range of around 100 kilometres.

Mercedes-Maybach stands for the ultimate in exclusivity and individuality. The target group is made up of statusoriented customers. The current vehicles include the Mercedes-Maybach S 500 and S 600 models, launched in February 2015, which blend the perfection of the MercedesBenz S‑Class with the exclusivity of Maybach. A special protection version, the Mercedes-Maybach S 600 Guard, is the world’s first passenger car to meet the highest ballistic protection level for civilian vehicles, VR10. The most recent model is the Mercedes-Maybach S 600 Pullman with face-to-face seating. Launched at the beginning of 2016, it adopted the mantle of absolute top-of-the-line model.

Cadillac Escala Concept

“Escala builds Cadillac’s aspirational character, signaling the brand’s return to the pinnacle of premium.” said Johan de Nysschen, president of Global Cadillac “Escala is a concept car, but one based upon the unrelenting rise of our product substance. Depending on the development of market segment for large luxury sedans, Escala is a potential addition to our existing product plan.” Escala (Spanish for “scale”) is a concept for a larger, more elite and expressive companion to the recently launched “http://www.cadillac.com/sedans/ct6-sedan.html” 2016 Cadillac CT6, the brand’s remarkable new range-topping prestige sedan. Escala is designed to be both a driver’s car and an indulgent flagship sedan. The large 4-door sedan features an expansive liftback design emphasizing the car’s considerable scale and versatility. At 210.5 inches (5347 mm) in overall length, Escala is roughly 6 inches longer than today’s CT6. This concept features a new and evolved face of Cadillac design that will begin appearing on production models soon. This includes a new expression of Cadillac’s vertical lighting, a brand signature since 1948. Organic light emitting diode (OLED) lighting elements are thinner and set deep within the fascia, creating a sinister look, day and night. The concept’s details invite closer inspection, including a three-dimensional precision pattern in the grille design and 22-inch wheels with two layers of spokes.

DUEL “This concept shares how Cadillac will bring forward a new experience that is uniquely American, and unmistakably Cadillac,” says Andrew Smith, executive director of Cadillac Global Design. “Escala is an expressive symbol of reward and an exhilarating driving experience. On the interior, we pushed further. It’s about precision and ingenuity in craftsmanship, and the artistic integration of technology.” Escala features a “dual personality” interior crafted with distinctly different zones: the front is about intensely focused modern technology, while the rear delivers relaxation. “My brief to the designers was to create a car you desperately want to drive, and also one in which you want to be driven,” Smith said. “So rather than a single design, this interior consists of two themes. It was

an opportunity for our designers to break the rules a little bit, exactly what Cadillac should do from time to time.” An array of three curved OLED screens is a prominent feature in the front of the cabin. The very thin, curved displays are layered in front of the driver, with the back sides wrapped in hand-stitched leather embossed with the Cadillac script. The array of screens consolidate the traditional “cluster” of driving gauges with the “center stack” into one integrated unit. Escala includes new designs for connectivity and control, providing a prototype for the user experience in development for future production models. The system features a central control module that enables the driver to exe-


cute tactile commands across the spectrum of connectivity functions, in addition to voice and gesture control technology. Inside the controller sits a new edition of Cadillac’s “flying Goddess” icon, a nod to the brand’s illustrious heritage. Like all Cadillac models today, the interior is assembled using hand cutand-sewn techniques. However, Escala presents several new and unique touches, blending overt luxury with covert technology. Escala makes broad use of hand-tailored fabric on the door trim and seating areas. Inspired by suiting material used by Cadillac’s partners in the fashion industry, the fabric provides a new level of hand-applied craftsmanship and color, unique in today’s auto interior landscape.

The advanced engine utilizes Active Fuel Management technology, enabling fuelsaving 4-cylinder operation.

Zenvo, the Danish manufacturer of one of the most powerful hypercars in the world recently introduced the TS1, that combines new remarkable driving dynamics with luxury and exclusivity. The manufacturer is planning to build just fifteen cars, making every car a collector’s item

The

new Zenvo TS1 conforms to the traditions and principles of the Zenvo ST1 – the legendary Danish hypercar that took the automotive world by surprise in 2009. The evolutionary model Zenvo TS1 has retained its futuristic, aggressive Scandinavian design, top speed of 375 km/h, and day to day drivability. The refinements over the previous version have been driven by the desire to fulfil the wishes of the clients and their desired driving experience. The Zenvo TS1 is powered by a new in-house developed 5.9L lightweight fast revving Twin-Supercharged V8 flat-plane engine, that provides high performance and reliability on the road. According to Zenvo CEO Troels Vollertsen, the engine delivers instant throttle response, a wide torque curve and an incredible power output. The inlet manifolds are manufactured from carbon fibre resulting in significant weight saving on the engine unit and a lower centre of gravity comparing to the ST1. Top speed is electronically limited to 375 km/h. The new hypercar is available with two types of gearbox: a 7-speed synchronized paddle shift gearbox with auto mode, and a 7-speed race inspired paddle shift gearbox with dog-engagement. The exterior design has remained true to the Company core values. Zenvo chief designer Christian Brandt explains: “Every now and then with design you strike something that has timeless appeal. We believe the Zenvo has that appeal; that is why we have only introduced subtle

changes to the design and made it a bit sharper and more aggressive in keeping with the sporty credentials of the new engine. In order to optimize downforce the front splitter, rear wing and diuser have been redesigned. We have added a vertical wing in the intercooler inlet behind the doors in order to improve intercooler flow and efficiency. The rear bumper and exhaust system have also been modified”. In order to meet the customer requirements of a 2016 hypercar Zenvo decided to create a completely new interior for the TS1. In decades supercar manufactures have developed driver oriented sport car interiors. For the TS1 the Danish brand have taken this concept to a new level through highlighting the driver’s side with a contrasting colour. The interior of the hypercar has dramatically changed, from the seats to the dashboard and centre console. The new interior has unlimited customization options of leather, Alcantara, carbon fibre and aluminium finish etc. Zenvo offers to new clients a direct dialog with the design team in the process of designing every unique interior and in this way provide the option for clients to become co-creators of their car. Like the previous model, the Zenvo TS1 will be limited to just 15 units. Furthermore, a Track-day concept of the TS1 named TSR has been unveiled in Geneva. The TSR have been developed specifically for track day use and is featuring heavy aerodynamic changes improving downforce as well as lower ground clearance and stiffer racing suspension. The car is a weight optimized and features a true minimalist racing interior with a roll cage, racing seats and 6 point seat belts.


The concept was born in Denmark in 2006 and the company quickly entered the hypercar market. Zenvo takes pride not only in the finished product, but also in the craftsmanship of each element. The Zenvo factory is located in Praestoe (Denmark), a small picturesque seaside town. Most processes are performed by hand and the creators of the company personally take part in the construction of every car. This is not only a tribute to traditions, but also an ideology of the company that combines the highest standards of quality control, craftsmanship and personal responsibility for the best possible result

, more frugal and agile and at the same time even more comfortable – the new Opel Astra meets all of these demands thanks to its successful fitness program. The visionary Monza Concept, unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, was the role model for the eleventh generation Opel compact class car. Depending on the model and trim level it’s up to 200 kilograms lighter than its predecessor. The completely new vehicle architecture plays a major role in the weight reduction. Every component was checked for compact design and lightweight materials. The bodyshell weight alone was reduced by 20 percent from 357 to 280 kilograms. Additional, chassis-related measures resulted in another 50 kilograms of weight reduction; these include high-strength and ultra-high-strength low-weight steels, compact subframes as well as weight reductions to the front and rear axle. The end result of this fitness program: it is more responsive, corners better and gives a much more direct overall driving experience. THE LATEST POWERTRAIN PORTFOLIO The engine in the new Opel Astra supports this claim. Outputs range from 70 kW/95 hp to 147 kW/200 hp. The diesel and gasoline engines with a displacement of up to 1.6 liters all have three things in common: they combine highest efficiency with excellent responsiveness and running smoothness. The 1.6 CDTI with a wide range of outputs starting at 70 kW/95 hp covers the diesel offer whereas the 1.0 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo (77 kW/105 hp) is the base level

If you are the kind of person who likes hot chili sauce on his toast and you are in the market for a sensible yet spicy five-door hatchback, the Opel Astra with the all-new 1.6-liter BiTurbo diesel engine is the car for you (NEDC combined cycle fuel consumption: 4.14.0 l/100 km; 109-106g/km CO2). The Astra 1.6 BiTurbo CDTI sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds; accelerates from 80 to 120 km/h in 7.5 seconds; and keeps loping on to a maximum speed of 220 km/h. This blend of high performance and modest fuel consumption makes the twin-turbo Astra one of the most fuel-efficient cars in the compact class

gasoline engines. The highlight in the Astra engine portfolio is the all-new 1.4 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo, a four-cylinder unit from the same family as the smaller but nonetheless powerful one-liter, three-cylinder engine. The all-aluminum engine will make its debut with 110 kW/150 hp. It impresses with dynamic responsiveness and high performance while curbing fuel consumption. The engine delivers maximum torque of up to 245 Nm very early. Maximum power is available between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm – perfect conditions for driving pleasure in combination with efficiency. Based on its construction, the new 1.4 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo also adds less weight to the car. The aluminum engine block alone weighs ten kilograms less than the castiron block of the current 1.4-liter turbo. THE PERFECT SYMBIOSIS The design of the new Astra clearly depicts the efficiency at the heart of the car. The evolution of the Opel design philosophy ‘Sculptural Artistry meets German Precision’ ensures that the new Astra conveys a lighter, more athletic appearance. The front headlamps flow seamlessly into the grill aperture forming a distinctive graphic. The most significant design cue is the ‘breakthrough’ C-pillar, which creates the impression of a floating roof. The dramatically sculpted rear deck lid graphically links the rear tail lamps to create a leaner, wider and lower impression, again reinforcing the Astra’s core efficiency. The Astra does not just look smaller… it is smaller: with a total length of 4.37 meters it is almost five centimeters shorter than its predecessor. With a height of 1.46 meters it is

also 2.6 centimeters smaller. The dimensions obviously have an impact on aerodynamics and efficiency with the new Astra boasting a drag coefficient below 0.30. Smaller on the outside but bigger on the inside. The wheelbase may have been reduced by two centimeters but the amount of space inside increased. In combination with newly crafted seats, the passengers in the rear can enjoy an additional 35 millimeters legroom. Furthermore, the distance between the front and rear seats was increased, improving travel comfort and sense of space. The interior of the new Astra again reinforces the Opel design philosophy of ‘Sculptural Artistry meets German Precision’. Gracefully sculpted shapes combine with functional clarity and premium materials to redefine a new generation of interiors. Switches and controls are all reduced to an absolute minimum, supporting the efficiency and ease of use which is at the core of the Astra. The award-winning IntelliLink system takes center stage, carefully located to ensure both an ideal view to the display as well as easy reach and use. OUTSTANDING CONNECTIVITY WITH OPEL ONSTAR Opel democratizes technologies and innovations from higher segments, Opel makes innovations affordable. For example in connectivity. The next generation Astra is the first new Opel model that will be available with the personal connectivity and service assistant Opel OnStar from its launch. Opel OnStar offers customers a broad range of safety and comfort services. If an airbag deploys, Opel OnStar will be alerted automatically. An advisor will

then contact the vehicle to determine whether help is required. If there is no response, emergency responders are immediately sent to the exact location of the vehicle. This is only one example of the advantages of the new personal connectivity and service assistant. Drivers and passengers can reach OnStar 24/7 and 365 days a year. No matter whether they need roadside assistance or any other service – an OnStar advisor is always ready to help. Furthermore, OnStar will turn the new Astra into a 4G LTE mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. Up to seven devices, from smartphones to tablets, can be connected simultaneously. In addition, the new generation of the IntelliLink infotainment system will celebrate its debut in the Astra. As it is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, it will facilitate bringing the world of smartphones into the car – a premiere in the compact class segment. Each system builds off of the features smartphone users rely on most. Android Auto is built around Google Maps, Google Now and the ability to talk to Google, as well as a growing audio and messaging app ecosystem that includes WhatsApp, Skype, Google Play Music, Spotify, and podcast players. carplay. The functions can be controlled via the large, up to eight-inch touchscreen located high on the center stack, via remote control on the steering wheel (volume) or via voice control. PREMIUM TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE COMPACT CLASS The ground-breaking full-LED matrix light of the next generation enables driving with glarefree high beams and will be available in the compact class for the first time in the Astra. Consisting of 16 LED segments – eight on each side of the vehicle – the new LED matrix system automatically and constantly adapts the length and distribution of the light beam to every traffic situation. In the process, it works with the Opel Eye front camera. As soon as the vehicle exits urban areas, the high-beam lighting is automatically switched on – and it always remains on. At driving speeds of 80 km/h, drivers detect objects at the side of the road around 30 to 40 meters sooner than with conventional halogen or xenon low beam lighting. This gives them around 1.5 seconds more time to react. Dazzling other road users is also not a problem. When the camera detects light sources from oncoming or preceding traffic, individual LEDs in the relevant zone are deactivated, simply “cutting out” the area around the vehicles. The rest of the road and its surroundings remain brightly illuminated. With this degree of precision and adaptation, LED matrix light elevates lighting technology to the next level. Not only does the system illuminate the surroundings brighter than conventional lighting systems, it also has a considerably longer run-

ning life than headlamps with halogen or xenon lamps. Another advantage is that mechanical movements are no longer necessary in the headlamp – the individual LED segments turn on or off according to the situation, which also contributes to durability. the wheel of the Polo was JariMatti Latvala: just like his car, a three-time Rally Finland winner. Close behind him in the Kamaz was Russia’s Ayrat Mardeev, who won the Dakar truck category in 2015 and claimed a podium finish on two further occasions. He also took a truck win in the Silk Way Rally from Moscow to China last month. So a 10,200kg truck versus a one-tonne car, with a 16.2-litre diesel engine doing battle with a 1.6-litre turbo petrol.

“When you accelerate in the car, the power goes down so quickly that it takes some time for the truck to catch up,” Latvala pointed out. “But the funny thing is that under braking, when the truck is coming a bit closer, you really feel like you want to run away. You don’t want it to touch you… I was surprised how far the truck jumps, it’s really quite something; I got goose bumps.”

“This really is a huge, massive machine,” added Mardeev. “And when you sit behind the wheel of such a powerful truck, it’s an incomparable feeling: you feel the full power of the truck as soon as you start the engine, while all the vibration is transferred to your hands and your body.” On the roads of the Dakar, launching the Kamaz through the air is part of a normal day’s work. “In rally raids this happens all the time: during the day we lose count of how many times we jump and fly,” he explained. “But this place is one of the most legendary in the whole championship. Maybe not even so much for the jump itself, but more because of its location and its importance for the championship. So for Jari-Matti and me such activity it’s the meaning of our lives. We can’t live without it. You could call it an adrenaline addiction.” For the Finnish rally driver, seeing the truck fly through the scenery of his homeland has raised some intriguing possibilities for the future. After all, a number of WRC stars have gone on to continue their careers at the Dakar, from former Dakar winners Ari Vatanen and Juha Kankkunen, to stars such as Sebastien Loeb and Mikko Hirvonen in more recent times. “I have to say that now I’m excited: maybe after my rally career I should go to the Dakar and drive a truck,” he concluded. “That would be a good experience for me and then I would have it in my museum later on. I know that Loeb and the others have been driving the Dakar cars, but actually I’m more excited about the trucks now…”

Ransomware is now a real threat for Motorsport Teams

We all know that nowadays software aids are embedded in every motorsport category. This creates criticism every year, while some praise the technical advancements in the sport. It has been decades now since the gut-feel of the driver was the sole tactical decider in a race. But how much data does this “technical� sport generate? During the course of a race, over 65 GB of data can be created and transferred by one team

after race the teams collect information that spans from lap times to the ideal car setup to telemetry and engineering figures and this data becomes more and more valuable. And with information being shared faster and more widely than ever before, the possibility for the data to be compromised has also increase, because in a sport where one hundredth of a second can make a huge difference, this data can have an actual monetary value too. The cost of generating all this data from scratch can be loosely calculated by looking at the total number of test, race & set-up sessions and then adding together the total costs of all of these events since the team started racing. These are big numbers we are talking about here. Of course, this simple calculation merely includes the obvious team costs and there are many more costs that should be included too to get the true data value. In short, the number is only ever going to be higher than we all initially think. But it’s not just a concern for high-profile race teams either. Small teams that have been racing for many years have vast data sets that can also run well into the multi-millions of dollars. And hackers know this, which is why they are starting to turn their attention to motorsport teams using Ransomware. Ransomware is a type of malware that uses encryption to lock data owners out of their digital files until they pay a monetary ransom for a ‘key’. Essentially it works by getting into an

IT environment and executing malicious code that then encodes digital files with encryption that can only be unlocked by someone who knows the password: the hackers. According to analysis, based on Kaspersky Security Network statistics, in one year the number of attacks increased more than fivefold from 131,111 attempts to infect users in 2014–2015 to 718,536 in 2015–2016. So this problem is growing, and won’t be going away anytime soon…

A recent example of this from within motorsport was the encryption of the data of motorsport team Circle Sport-Leavine Family Racing who runs the No. 59 NASCAR. They noticed that a machine on their network was loading many of their documents to DropBox where they hold all their digital files. When the team leader went to open these files some time later he found that they had all been encrypted and a screen popped up telling him he needed to pay a ransom to decrypt their files.

The team estimated their files to be worth over $2,000,000 to them. Sadly they chose to pay the ransom to regain their files. However, without their files they’d really have only two main choices:

• Spend over $2,000,000 to build up the data set again hoping that they could actually do this even if they had the money • Close the team and stop racing And of course no motorsport team wants to ever choose to stop racing, because racing it’s what we all want to do.


IN 2014 TEAM MARUSSIA (NOW KNOWN AS MANOR RACING) SUFFERED A TROJAN-TYPE ATTACK

Alex Moiseev, Managing Director of Kaspersky Lab Europe and Kaspersky Motorsport team driver said: “Being in motorsport with all the data flowing gives us new technical challenges to explore and right now we know that we have a competitive advantage of a few years compared to anybody else in the industry.” This new strain of cyber attack is very different from what motorsport has seen before. Previously we have seen Trojan attacks where team’s IT networks are compromised from within resulting in challenges such as computer crashes, files being deleted and data being corrupted. And we have seen distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks where systems, usually web sites or web services, are flooded with requests from the outside that overload the target system’s resources resulting in temporary access disruption. Back in 2014 Anglo-Russian team Marussia, which is now known as Manor Racing, suffered a Trojan-type attack. Their server racks were attacked meaning their cars and team lost valuable track-time while trying to restore normal service. And further back in 2012 the Formula One® website (F1.com) was subjected to a DDoS attack by the activist group called Anonymous during the Bahrain race that year. But Ransomware is different, it doesn’t just simply disrupt service it holds the targeted system’s data and files hostage for monetary gain. With the data and files within motorsport teams of such great value commercially and operationally this is now a real threat to the teams and the sport.

But it is not all bad news because in 2015 Kaspersky Lab deprived criminals of nearly $53,000,000 by actively fighting Crypto-Ransonware and continues to lead the march to protect what matters most to people whether it’s privacy, family, finances, customers, business success or critical infrastructure. Kaspersky Lab have made it their mission to secure it all. The first step in protecting motorsport data and files is the realisation that attacks are possible and also to realise the potential losses that can be involved when not being proactive about the threats. Up to date systems, software and hardware all play a key part in protecting data and files from threats but the main player will always be cyber security software because this looks for possible entry points, malicious files, data and many other elements to therefore proactively help to thwart attacks. more this year the pinnacle of classic car shows didn’t disappoint: the 228 vehicles from 16 different countries invited to roll on to the fairway were in immaculate condition almost as if they just exited the manufacturer’s garage for the first time. But in fact it is thanks to the owner’s love and dedication to these spectacular vehicles that we can today enjoy their uniqueness, elegance and of course the roar of their engines. Sometimes it takes years of restoration and polishing in order to shine under the spotlight at Pebble Beach. For example it took two years to restore Elvis Presley’s 1957 BMW 507, at the show together with many other cars from Munich to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the German manufacturer.


The week long festivities in California attracted once more several VIP personalities, like Formula 1 legend Sir Jackie Stewart, who summed up perfectly the essence of the Concours: “The elegance and splendor of the cars that race, as well as those on show throughout the event, represent the ultimate in motor sport aesthetics. They reflect a global appreciation for the past and its traditions. The people who buy the cars, who restore them, show them and race them are pursuing excellence in style and precision. What I see at Monterey always gives me a feeling of great pride.” There were many strong contenders for Best of Show this year. Final nominees included a 1938 Delahaye 165 Figoni & Falaschi Cabriolet and a 1931 Stutz DV-32 LeBaron Convertible Victoria. But it was the 1936 Lancia Asturia Pininfarina Cabriolet that took home the big prize, one of six similar cars built for a Lancia dealer in Biella, Italy. This particular vehicle, which once belonged to guitarist Eric Clapton, has undergone two complete restorations, the most recent one taking five years, and now resides with its owner Richard Mattei in Paradise Valley, Arizona. “This Lancia is a true combination of speed and style,” said Concours Chairman Sandra Button. “Pininfarina took a fantastic car and added many spectacular attributes, including a power top, curved side glass windows and the unusual basket-woven trim. This car is sport and luxury embodied.”

On August 1 1936 at 11.55 Bretislav Jan Procházka and Jindrich Kubias returned to Prague in their ŠKODA RAPID from a trip around the world. In the 1930s spectacular long-distance trips put ŠKODA at the centre of attention, advertising the brand on a global scale

years have passed from the long-distance drive that led the ŠKODA RAPID and its crew around the world. On the 97-day trip involving 44 days of driving Břetislav Jan Procházka and Jindřich Kubias managed to drive 630 kilometres per day on average, demonstrating the robustness of the ŠKODA model. Long-distance travels of the ŠKODA RAPID and ŠKODA POPULAR stretching over 52,000 kilometres drew global attention. ​“The world tour undertaken by Břetislav Jan Procházka and Jindřich Kubias demanded a great deal of the men and the car,” explains Andrea Frydlová, Head of the ŠKODA Museums. “The success of the trip highlights the high performance and build quality of ŠKODA vehicles even at that time. With their trip around the globe in the 1930s, Procházka and Kubias made a significant contribution to making the ŠKODA brand popular worldwide.”

The world tour began in Prague on 25 April 1936. The 27,700km ŠKODA RAPID expedition was led by the Prague entrepreneur Břetislav Jan Procházka (1897-1971). In the co-pilot’s seat was Jindřich Kubias (19091967). During their adventure the duo put their trust in a slightly adjusted ŠKODA RAPID with central tube frame equipped with a 1.4l and 23kW (31 HP) four-cylinder. The car boasted independent wheel suspension and even hydraulic brakes. It proved to be the right choice also off the road, with most of the road network consisting of gravel tracks back then. The round-the-world trip took 97 days in total, out of which 53 days were taken up by ship transport and customs proceedings.

After the start in Czechoslovakia Procházka and Kubias drove through Germany, Poland, Lithuania and Latvia and further to the former Soviet Union. Following the stage from Moscow to Baku, Azerbaijan, the ŠKODA RAPID took a day of rest in the Russian city of Kaluga. Today the new ŠKODA RAPID, a grandson of the globe-trotting model, rolls down the assembly line in the ŠKODA plant there. After sailing over the Caspian Sea the RAPID crossed Iran, where the crew had to endure a sandstorm. The resulting time loss forced Prcoházka and Kubias to complete the

stretch from Quetta, Pakistan, to Mumbai in three days, so that they would not miss the ferry from India to Sri Lanka. Having driven through Malaysia and Singapore they were taken aboard a ship via Hongkong and Shanghai to Kobe, Japan. Passing through Honolulu the pair reached San Francisco. After 5,300 kilometres, 100 hours and 55 minutes they finally conquered the Big Apple, breaking the current record by more than nine hours. The last stage took them from the French city of Cherbourg to France and further via Paris and Nuremberg to Prague.


As early as 1934, the ŠKODA POPULAR completed the 15,000 km journey from Prague to Calcutta. The travels of František Alexander Elstner (1902-1974) and his wife Eva were also legendary. They managed to cover the 25,000 kilometres across the USA, Mexico and Spain in their ŠKODA POPULAR 1.0l SV with 16kW (21 hp) engine between February and May 1936. Two years later, the couple drove a ŠKODA POPULAR 1100 OHV, which had 22 kW (30 PS), approximately 6,000 kilometers across Argen-

tina to Buenos Aires in only twelve days. In June 1936 Stanislav Škulina (1908-1961) and his wife Maria in their ŠKODA RAPID saloon set off on a two-year-long trip around Africa, which eventually stretched over 52,000 kilometres from Dakar to the Equator and further to Johannesburg in South Africa. After service stop at the local ŠKODA dealer they continued to the Cape of Good Hope and returned back to Prague via Egypt and the Mediterranean, where their ŠKODA RAPID arrived on 18 May 1938.

Zietlow, accompanied by cameraman Marius Biela and journalist Peter Bakanov, completed the impressive 15,200 km tour in 6 days, 9 hours and 38 minutes. With this feat, the team has broken the previous world record, set at 8 days and 12 hours

WHEELS! A very “unique” summer for Sir Chris Hoy. Britain’s most successful Olympian in June competed successfully at the Le Mans 24 Hour Race achieving a personal lifelong ambition. Than he decided to learn to drive Nissan Juke on two wheels in just two days – a feat that would take most drivers about two months

may have retired from professional cycling, but Sir Chris Hoy has been spotted back on two wheels. The formerOlympian managed the tricky technique of two-wheel driving in a Nissan Juke, with just two days of instruction. Under the guidance of world-record-breaking stuntman Terry Grant, Sir Chris spent one day at Silverstone Motor Circuit and another at Kendrew Barracks, learning to drive the specially modified Juke crossover. Driving on two wheels or ‘skiing’ is a stunt made famous over the years from James Bond films, Knight Rider and the Dukes of Hazzard amongst others. The activity requires precision, advanced handling techniques and a good deal of driver instinct. On Sir Chris’ first day, a roll cage was fitted for cabin protection whilst a specially-engineered stabilizer wheel on the outside prevented the car flipping onto its roof. After Terry demonstrated the required techniques, Chris attempted the challenging stunt for the first time. After several attempts the former Olympian was beginning to get the hang of it, even achieving a few controlled drives of short distances with just two wheels on the ground. At the second session, Hoy’s confidence and consistency improved to the point where Terry was comfortable removing the stabilizer wheel. Despite the added pressure of having nothing to stop the vehicle rolling over, he quickly rose to the challenge, taking the ramp at the correct angle


and velocity, catching the Juke before it rolled over and then driving balanced on two wheels. In one of the following runs he even managed a 400 metre distance – an achievement that brought huge cheers from the watching team. Terry Grant commented: “Chris nailed it two for two! Driving on two wheels in two days – most people would take two months to master that. I think it highlights his ability to soak up instruction and apply discipline to something that’s both mentally and physically challenging – of which he’s got plenty of experience. Operating under pressure and being in control at all times, they’re the skills you need for this stunt. To master it in such a short period of time though, I’m really impressed.” Chris Hoy added: “I loved it. I never thought it would be as much fun as it was,

but I just wanted to keep going. On day one I felt like I was only getting a first foot on the ladder and it’d be weeks before I’d be driving without the safety net. Then today when they took the stabilizer wheel off and there was the risk of rolling the car, the pressure didn’t get to me. I remembered Terry’s instructions and it all came together. When I caught the roll and was suddenly driving on two wheels it was such a rush of adrenaline and relief in equal measure – an amazing experience. Thanks to Terry and Nissan for allowing me to add another string to my driving bow.” Terry Grant is no stranger to two-wheel driving. Amongst his impressive 23 Guinness World Records he holds the record for the fastest mile on two wheels, set in a Nissan Juke NISMO RS at Goodwood Festival in 2015.

The Nissan Juke used in the stunt was a standard production model with limited modifications to enable it to drive on two wheels. Modifications were made to the front differential to divert drive to the road wheel and to prevent the raised wheel from spinning. A different tyre compound was used to enable a higher PSI level to be used. Other than that the vehicle used was a standard road car
